The Best Cycling In Taiwan | Taroko Gorge With Giant Rental Bikes

  • Today was my favorite day from our recent trip of cycling in Taiwan. My wife and I will be cycling through the Taroko Gorge. We rented some flat bar road bikes from the Hualien Giant store, and were quickly on our way. Words can't explain how incredibly beautiful the surrounding area of Hualien is and we saw so many stunning sights within the Taroko National park as well. By far one of my favorite days of riding in my entire life and highly recommended if you're planning to do some cycling in Taiwan.
I've been wanting to cycle in the Taroko Gorge ever since I first heard of it from the Taiwan KOM challenge a few years back.. The footage I saw had to be some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen someone ride their bike through.. Today, that dream is finally coming true.
We arrived in Hualien (花蓮), Taiwan last night by train after my wife Thuong arrived in Taipei. We quickly woke up and went to the nearby GIANT Bicycle store to pick up our rental bikes to begin our Taiwan Cycling Trip. In today's ride, we're riding from Hualien to the Taroko Gorge in the Taroko National Park.
There were so many beautiful sights to see and attractions along the way, so this video is a bit longer than normal..
In total, today's ride ended up being about 80km
    Strava: / strava
Our bicycle rentals only cost about 1,700 NTD for 4 days, and we later used those for our ride down from Hualien to Taitung. You can pick them up at one store and drop them off at another (highly recommended service)
On today's ride, we visited many of the attractions within the Taroko Gorge, including the Eternal Spring Shrine, Swallow Grotto, and more!
Part of our ride today is also part of the infamous Taiwan KOM challenge route!

I've been wuling with my bicycle in 2014. At that time the Taroko gorge closed by influence of typhoon. So I used opposite way from puri. This winter I'll visit Taiwan again I'll climb the wuling from Hualien. Because of your video clip I could get many imformation of road and the other conditions. Thank you very much.

Read the title and had to watch. In the early 2000’s while living in Taipei we drove over (car) and spent the weekend at the hotel in the Taroko Gorge. Your video brought back so many memories.

It’s is beautiful. Lived in Taiwan for over six years and Toroko is so special. Cruise it’s easy to check the history of the roads and tunnels. Date back many years and I believe during the period of Japanese occupation. The mountains range to approx 4000m+. Great to be reminded of the place and hopefully will get back some day to cycle there.

@@TwoWheelCruise Well-crafted clip! I think you can try to promote more Japanese cultures , foods and special tourist spots to people around the world. Also, since you are American and your wife is Vietnamese and you are in Japan, you may think about how to incorporate language teaching into your clips. Maybe you can have bunch of clips designed for language teaching and add more target languages to the subtitles. Hopefully, you can get more subscribers and visit Taiwan again soon to bring more interesting clips.

Cycling from Hualien City to the Taroko NP in August was probably not the best idea 😊 By the time you got to the park, the heat had already started to wear you down. Although probably there are not many renting options closer to the park.
The climb you did to Buluowan is easily a pass, especially on bikes. It is not long but it is quite steep, and there is nothing really special once you get there. Now there is a new suspension bridge, but still not really worthy. And the bridge currently leads to nowhere.
The Baiyang trail is a good destination for one day trips in the Taroko Gorge area. It is cyclable, although I do not know if it is allowed to actually ride the bike or if you have to walk it. The falls at the end of the short trail are beautiful (almost completely dry one month ago though) and there is a tunnel that run through an aquifer, so plenty of water coming down from its walls.
I would like to try to make it to Hehuanshan this Autumn. Still plenty of training to do if I want to actually make it to the top.

I rode the central Taiwanese mountains earlier this year. Rode down from the top for several hours it was fantastic. You only went a tiny way up the Taroko Gorge. There is a 7/11 a bit further up which you could have ridden to but I guess you were not up for it. Beyond that you get up into the mountains for real. Falling rocks really are a danger especially when the weather is stormy although when I did it in february/march the weather was calm. Absolutely fantastic views and descent. Also it is a major earthquake hotspot as I found out one night when the earth shook quite badly. Hualien took a lot of damage and people died. Traffic at busy times can be insane though. Scooters are terrible for creating pollution. Thanks for posting.

Taroko is originally a Japanese Romaji name of the place. One of very few Japanese Romaji names left in Taiwan. Other Japanese names in Taiwan are mostly Kanji, but they are pronounced in Mandarin now, such as 高雄(Takao/Kaohsiung) 台北:松山(Matzuyama/Songshan)花蓮: 豐田(Toyota/Fengtian)

      Two Wheel Cruise
Taibei is the romanization system used in China(Hanyu Pinyin or Pinyin). If you use this to search for Taipei, you get mostly information from China.
Taipei is used after 1945.... the officially name now. It is used in Taiwan and around the world.
Former names(if you would like to search for historical info, interesting if you google the keywords especially Taihoku):
Taihoku during early 1900s and 1945.
      Taipak before 1900s.

Wow when I went back in 2014 there were no cyclist along the road. I did not know Giant had bike rentals, the private bike rental shops in Hualien had some sketchy cycles for 500 NTD for a day. But your story about the Japanese Rider dying from a rock is freaky scary. I rode the shuttle bus up to go hiking, and this huge chunk of rock fell on the roof of the bus and rolled off. It was probably 7 inches in diameter, but the driver drove away like it was no big deal... I hiked one of the trails that took me down to the hot springs by the river, but I would be exhausted climbing on a cycle and then hiking afterwards.
They really cut down on the shuttle times for the buses to go into the gorge. At least the cycles gave you the chance to see sites I totally missed by zooming up on the shuttle bus. It's a shame you didn't have enough time to see the 3 level waterfall, you were almost there! 50 minute walk from there is the onsen by the river.

Road cycling is growing in popularity lately in Taiwan :)
The falling rocks is a scary reality, but thankfully there don't seem to be too many life threatening incidents.. I would of loved to stay here a few more days and do more hiking.. Onsen after a hike is perfect.. Will come back!

I'm going to be cycling a big circuit around Taiwan this February. Giant are apparently the best for rental, how easy was your experience and what did you get with your bike ? (Pump, bags, helmet etc.)

Wow! We've been following your channel for a few years, but didn't realise that you did this cycle to Taroko Gorge. We booked Giant rental bikes to go from Hualien to Taitung, but didn't plan to cycle to Taroko Gorge as I read on some blogs it's quite dangerous and not recommended. What did you think? We're experienced cyclists in Japan (although not been riding much recently).

    • @TwoWheelCruise

It's definitely worth going to, probably some of the most scenic riding I've ever done. You do need to be cautious in areas where there may be falling rocks though.

How long did you cycle for the whole trip? Was thinking of doing the same next year when I visit Taiwan. I have been to Hualien and Taroko last 2017, and was hoping for enxt year will do the same as yours. Looks interesting and more fun than taking the bus.

My wife and I would like to do the ride through Taroko but we're incapable of climbing 3,000m although we can ride 80km a day on more modest terrain. Does anyone know if there is any service (such as a bus, taxi etc) which could carry us up the big climb. We've been to Taiwan before including Taroko. It's so good I want to it again, this time by bike.

    • @TwoWheelCruise
