She Tried Mountain Bike Commuting - How Does it Compare to a Road Bike?

  • How is bike commuting by mountain bike? I'll be talking about some of the pros and cons of commuting by mtb, as well as the differences between mountain bike commuting and road bike commuting during my daily commute to work.
    Today my wife is trying out her new mountain bike on her bike commute to work for the first time. Although she's a daily bike commuter on her road bike and she's had this new bike for a while now, this is her first time using it on her commute.
    Because the bike was still brand new, she didn't want to use it on her commute at first, but after trying the MTB on her commute compared to the road bike, I think she's a big fan now.
    Let me know what you guys think as well in the comments! Is commuting by MTB better than a road bike or CX bike?

      The addition of suspension makes even tired old routes feel fresh and new and so much smoother. Looking forward to moving off of full-suspension to full rigid in the future. And that cyclist at 2:10, I bet they were strava-ing it xD Really loving the banter :)

    Commuting by bike definitely keeps you fully immersed in the seasons. Commuting by car you’re in an air conditioned box and then when you get to work in an office it doesn’t feel like the time of year. In fact it’s usually the opposite. In summer it feels freezing and winter is stiflingly hot because they overcompensate with the AC.

I live in Greenwich SE London and used to commute to soho in central London on my bike, only around 7 miles each way but..... what a pain in the winter, my route took me mostly along the River Thames so lots to see and very historical but sooooo windy in winter. Some was great as there are lots of old pubs to stop off at !

    Riding in the dark may not be as video-friendly but it's still lovely imo. In my old job I'd do both my rides in the dark during the winter, it was always very peaceful (albeit a bit cold). Now my ride is considerably shorter so I get to ride with daylight through the year (mostly so now that it's still summer for me here).

    Thanks for the video. Every time I go to visit Beautiful Wife's family in Ise I'm surprised how fast the sun drops. On the other hand, a public holiday in Germany means just that: everything is closed except essential services which is nice: almost no traffic at all and everyone gets the day off.
    The coldest I cycled in this year was -6; I was very glad when the sun came out.

    Very nice ride. I was surprised by how wide and nice the foot paths are in Japan. It's good that with proper infrastructure more people can ride instead of driving.
    Commuting in MTB is actually safer, more comfortable and more practical than road bike.
    The obvious advantages of MTB Vs Road Bikes for commuting are: You run Wider tyres with much larger contact surfaces and lower pressure. This offers far better grip and reduced braking distances in wet. Lower tyre pressure offers better comfort, lower puncture risks. And running full suspension not only offers way better comfort, you can easily deal with curbs and mount them easily to maintain smooth flow and higher average speeds. On sudden transitions to soft sandy surfaces where sealed surfaces disappears, you can still move on, instead of having to get off and push on a road bike. Even better, if you ride a eMTB with centre drive, if offers so much torque that makes hill climbs disappears and allows you to maintain and carry forward your momentum over undulating terrains and maintain higher average speeds.
    I used to ride my road bike for commuting and covers 60kms per day. Now i switched to eMTB. The concept is similar to GT, being able to cover vast distances at high speed and comfort. It takes me just less than a hour to cover a 30km trip. So maintaining just over 40kmh+ average, similar to my road bike speed and slightly lower than my recumbent speed, but offering much better ride with the comfort of full suspension. And on flats, i can even keep up with cars doing around 50kmh. Yes, eMTB is the way to go! The battery gets charged by my full Offgrid solar so it is totally Green solution that is powered by the sun ☀️😂👍

    One thing you get from doing what seem to anybody like boring and tiring, commuting to work and back home make's your body more immune to sickness, doing this make's your body conditioned, and changes in the environment does not have much impact on you, after the eruption of Taal volcano here in the Philippines i ride my bike to work which is only 19km from the volcano with the ash and rocks and almost zero visibility, with respirator, goggles, gloves, and arm warmers, i go to work and back home without even a cold.

    I wonder how is it to commute in winter with such low temperatures... Here in Northeast Brazil is mostly sunny with 30+ celsius. Even when it rains is not that cold, it goes down to 23/24 celsius.

    • @TwoWheelCruise
      @TwoWheelCruise  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It barely gets below freezing here, but still it is very different from summer temps

  • @joelmondonedo6855
    @joelmondonedo6855 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    How long is your daily commute? Mine is 18 km (11.18 mi) here in Manila. It's quite congested and the roads aren't as well built and maintained, but I got to work early (6AM) so I can get ahead of most car traffic and we're starting to adapt more bike-friendly culture because of the lockdown. I'm thinking of switching to bike commute, should I go for MTB or Road Bike? I think the MTB will be a more comfortable ride but the road bike can help me cover a lot more distance in a shorter time. What do you think?

    5:24 and 6:03 DAYUM, those were some close calls. O_O
    The sun rises on my way bike commuting to work and sets when I get home. Nice view but sun gets in my eyes even with glasses. The visor peak part of my cycling hat kinda helps blocking out the sun but also reduces my viewing range.
    How is Japan dealing with Corona Virus situation especially among Asian foreigners?

    • @TwoWheelCruise
      @TwoWheelCruise  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That first one was pretty annoying, but the second one you pointed out is very common in Japan. They train the drivers here to ease in on the turn as far as possible even if you plan to stop. It's very very very nerve-wracking as a cyclist because you never know if they will actually stop or not, so best to always be extra cautious. I got hit this way once, and it was not a good time..
      The Coronavirus situation is getting more intense lately, everyone is wearing masks now, but that's about the extent of it so far.

    • @johnnydwicked
      @johnnydwicked 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TwoWheelCruise yea I agree that cars that stop last minute are very nerve wracking. Stay safe and ride on. :)

    Just wondering .... Are you alloud to use a bicycle bell in Japan, to warn people? Here in the Netherlands it is mandatory to have a bicycle bell on your bike, even on your racingbike. :-) I do like your video's about biking in Japan. Next year i'm planning to come to Japan for holiday. Hope to do some biking too in Japan.

    • @JohnAlzagatiti
      @JohnAlzagatiti 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Arjen Vonk not so sure it would work either way.. in the US we don’t use them and if you try it doesn’t work because people are not habituated to respond to it.. better off yelling or just not relying on it to prevent anything

    • @TwoWheelCruise
      @TwoWheelCruise  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it is technically illegal to use as a warning outside of an emergency th-cam.com/video/zXJBFUyLfNc/w-d-xo.html

    hey man, just a tip: some people like to see some part of the bike (the handlebars) in the shot as you ride. For some reason, I tend not to want to watch vids where all i can see is the scenery outisde. I doubt I'm the only one who's weird like that. Point is, you could be missing out on views.

    • @TwoWheelCruise
      @TwoWheelCruise  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip! I agree, it's better to have the handlebars in the shot. Normally my setup has it, but on this bike my position is too far forward with the GoPro on Wide setting. I'll try to see if it's any better on the extrawide setting.

    • @TwoWheelCruise

      Thankfully there are virtually no speed bumps here, but they do love their metal objects sticking out of the ground randomly. Many of which are really hard to see/notice.

    Just a suggestion: replace her knobby tires with a smooth one so she can accelerate easier and keep her speed better. Her biking with the MTB will be more enjoyable since she don't do off road with it.
