I think a strong reason why that's so raven was so watchable then and now was that the main characters were actually good actors. Like Boy meets world. The acting and the writing weren't as painfully forced or desperate to create specific comedic/ dramatic moments like most of the other shows.
I agree with your statement about Raven's parents. Rewatching the series as an adult, I appreciated how Tanya and Victor were goofy and supportive but also strict when they needed to be. I feel my own parents are the same way which adds to the relatability for me.
Yes, Raven's parents were AWESOME. I love how the dad was a cook, which isn't very common in kids shows. I also love how the mom was studying to become a lawyer, that's amazing. I know we never got to see her become one due to the actress leaving the show to take care of her grandmother (who was sick at the time), but just the fact that she was STUDYING to become one is amazing representation for African-American women in itself
Ironically, Ravens outburst at her teacher was actually warranted. He was targeting with malicious intent. But she should still have studied. Also, the Teacher is the guy who voiced Pumbaa.
This show was my entire childhood. It was both ridiculous and extremely deep and touched on very serious topics. Plus Raven is a fantastic actor and the theme song is an absolute banger
It seems obligatory for high school set tween coms to have that nasty for no reason teacher, the one who piles work on, picks on the students who don’t know the answer and administer harsh punishment when someone does cross them. iCarly has two of them, and Mr DeMartino in a Daria really needed to stop calling on Kevin and Brittney for the sake of his health when Daria and Jane were in the same class. It’s truth in television sadly, teachers who really shouldn’t be around kids and abuse the power trip.

Raven was a great show! They touched on racism and taught me as a child (living in a small conservative town) that racism is real and it is still prevalent.

@@TheKristina1978 yeah it’s supposed to skip generations but Ravens home didn’t follow that lol...I guess that explains why in the first season Raven didn’t consider one of her children could inherit it which is why she thought she could get away with keeping her ability from them, for whatever reason
That’s So Raven was one of the best shows on Disney Channel, if not the best, especially compared to the ones on Disney Channel currently. The episodes that focused on body image and racism are some of the best, especially for kids to understand, and are still to good to be used as examples today. They actually did explain where her power came from. It came from her grandmother but it skips a generation. So, technically it makes no sense that her son in Raven's Home has psychic abilities...since you know, it was supposed to skip a generation
BlockHead 437 yes your right it’s terrible! How are they going to do a spin on without the characters that were made for the spin off and it’s still going!
I agree completely. Maybe it’s cause we’re getting older and it’s less relatable now but I truly feel like the quality dipped. I still find that’s so raven and smart guy to be great shows.
I'm pausing at around around 3:20 when you say it isn't explained in the show how she has visions and that she can just "do" it, but that's not true. She got her visions passed down genetically, as her grandmother has visions, too. They're passed down every *second birth* down her mother's line, which is why her mother Tanya doesn't have visions, nor does Cory. It's also why when Raven has kids in "Raven's Home", her son Booker has visions but her daughter Nia doesn't.
You know what's weird, my math teacher showing us a glitchy video in zoom about exponents. It has Super Base playing in the background but since it's so glitchy it sounds demonic.
"But you know back in my time ..." You know why parents nowadays blame the teachers? Because those parents were the kids who got chewed out by their parents "back in your time". So they make the active decision to make their kid out to be this perfect blameless angel because that's what they wished their parents did when they were kids.
As a 20-year-old, I still watch this show from time to time and it's the only one I used to watch as a kid that still makes me actually laugh out loud. So iconic!
I'm gonna be honest. I haven't watched the show that much as a kid. Boy was I wrong. But when I watched the whole series on Disney+, I did not regret it one bit. It was a great show! The cast was fantastic!
2:35 teachers like this are the reason some kids (including me) have anxiety about speaking up in fear of the answer being wrong, and sometimes not even bother to try in case is as wrong because it meant i'd be humiliated. CAN WE NOT?!
Does anyone remember the episode of That's So Raven that dealed with racism a in a respectable way yet still in a way that kids would understand. This show is one of the few kids shows that still holds up pretty decently.
I was just thinking about that! I really miss these direct social justice lessons Disney shows had. Now it's just too subtle to not be present because they're afraid of repercussions so just choose shallow jokes that ignore real world problems.
@@drartemisa21 Yes, completely agree with you! Disney Channel in general has never been 100% realistic or gritty, but the older shows were less sugarcoated and weren't afraid to be a little bold or border on being risqué. I'm sorry but That's so Raven still slaps, this episode with her as her mom, and when she almost got married to the African prince are probably my favourite LOL
Okay, so - hold up. Raven is scared she's going to get into trouble for speaking up for herself after being bullied by her teacher - who was intentionally looking to embarrass her in front of her peers (and this supposedly is a common thing with this dude). However, the one thing she should get into trouble for (this being trying to trick both her teacher and her parents to avoid a group meeting that could have put an end to the real issue), she faces no consequences for. The show isn't that old though. I watched it in elementary school and I'm a junior now.

I know we never got to see her become one due to the actress leaving the show to take care of her grandmother (who was sick at the time), but just the fact that she was STUDYING to become one is amazing representation for African-American women in itself
yes i agree. victor has to be my favorite sitcom dad ever. I liked tanya too but I wish we could have seen more of her.
Ironically, Ravens outburst at her teacher was actually warranted. He was targeting with malicious intent. But she should still have studied.

The way poor Raven got in trouble for just telling the truth, I can’t stand teachers like him
yeah but she was being disrespectful
It seems obligatory for high school set tween coms to have that nasty for no reason teacher, the one who piles work on, picks on the students who don’t know the answer and administer harsh punishment when someone does cross them. iCarly has two of them, and Mr DeMartino in a Daria really needed to stop calling on Kevin and Brittney for the sake of his health when Daria and Jane were in the same class. It’s truth in television sadly, teachers who really shouldn’t be around kids and abuse the power trip.

"But you know back in my time ..."
You know why parents nowadays blame the teachers? Because those parents were the kids who got chewed out by their parents "back in your time". So they make the active decision to make their kid out to be this perfect blameless angel because that's what they wished their parents did when they were kids.
