If you’re going to do iCarly specials you gotta review the one where the iCarly cast meets the Victorious cast it’s pretty much an iconic special in all of Nickelodeon

As someone who’s been living abroad for about 6 years now, it is very weird and unsettling sometimes. I went home for the first time last year and I could barely recognize things. I felt like a foreigner in my hometown, and now I’m like “did I really go home or was it a dream?”
    It’s definitely a weird feeling.

I had seriously forgotten about this movie entierly, it's funny how watching this video made me remember a bunch of things from around that time. In regards to Alex's last question it does happen, whenever I found like an old notebook or see a picture of me and my highschool friends I look back and think "Wow I used to do so many weird stuff" or "I can't believe this thing was so popular back then", it does bring the feeling of some sort of evolution, I guess that's part of growing up.

Honestly ever since I learned about Dan Shncantspellthat and more recently how Jeanette was treated on the show and the trauma she has from it I view this show very differently. makes me sad because there's a lot of nostalgia behind it but now at this ripe old age of 26 I can't look past it

Yeah, I feel similarly, and it sucks, because I *still* find this show funny!
Like, it's so sad that so much joy can be drawn from so much degeneracy and pain so long as the curtain stays where it is.
Like, I whole heartedly disagree with Alex in that I think this show still works today, it's just the problem is how it was made and who made it.
So much talent wasted because of bad decisions and terrible treatment.
Sad in many ways for many people, Jeanette especially.

@@thatamericanbritishbloke5672 it's because it's a more foreign country than others since it didn't open to the world until recently vs other countries so the only way you could be exposed to it was through tv or maybe products that came from Japan. Because people couldn't go to Japan, there's just a unique foreigness/exoticism to Japan and it was not affected as much by colonialism (like their culture wasn't changed significantly by western countries). It doesn't help that everything that came through seemed very weird or unique (or it was the fact that it was different because again, not westernized) like Takeshi's castle or Japanese tv ads or anime. Recently it's because we're all weebs but there's also just a butt load of things to do in Japan that is not shown in any of these American tv shows. Japan is essentially a tourists dream and you can probably be in Japan a long time and still haven't gone through all the cool stuff that Japan offers

the representation wasn't that great, but it wasn't because they wanted to be racist, it was because they didn't need to have people teach the writers about what japan is like to make the ratings any different and it was random like the rest of the show

Hey Alex, I know you probably won’t read this, but I just want you to know how much your videos helped me. Last summer, I was going through some of the worst anxiety I’ve ever experienced and I remember discovering your videos and they acted as sort of a distraction/ coping mechanism for me. Everything from the format of your videos to your voice which is relaxing and somewhat nostalgic similarly to movies/shows your videos are often about. That bit of nostalgia from old stuff I used to watch helped calm me last summer, and although it may be weird, the nostalgia from your voice, personality, and animation has helped me this summer. I’ve always thought that nostalgia is one of the best passive feelings in the world and watching your new videos and even rewatching old videos really helps me. I can’t explain exactly how it helps me, but I’m thankful and I want you to know that your videos do a lot for people, at least me, beyond entertainment.

I had watched this when I was a kid and even I knew that it wasn’t accurate. My dad had business trips overseas and at some points he went to Japan. He would tell me all about how great the people were, how unique everything was, the awesome sights, even the weird game shows like ‘Wasabi Ball’. Despite all the differences though, he did nothing but praise how wonderful it was. Here’s a quote from him that I’ll always remember:
“There’s some pretty weird things over there, but it’s a good kind of weird. We think it’s weird because it’s not the norm for us. People out there think we’re weird too. But what really matters is meeting them. If you really want to know what people around the world are like, you need to get out there and see them yourself.”
A few years after he told me this, he, my mom, and I went to France. Tons of them definitely thought mom and I were hilarious because we were the complete confused tourist stereotype (a group of guys teased us by saying ‘bonjour’ in the evening). I think a comedy radio show mentioned the word ‘Americans’ at some point in a joke, but aside from those instances, a huge majority of them were really wonderful and patient with my mom and I’s dumbassery. A group even helped me out when I was lost despite the language barrier. They were obviously not the French caricature that was shown in the special and I’m positive that France has web shows that are WAY better than the one depicted as ‘France’s best’.
Overall, this was just a plain racist special that painted other cultures in a bad light. Yes, Japan is different. Yes, France is France. That doesn’t define the people who live there though.

I went to a boarding school halfway across the world from where I live and that's exactly how I feel! The whole thing ended just as suddenly as it started, and since coming back home Ive tried explaining it to a few people. The only way i could describe it was that it felt like a dream and had never really happened, but they didnt seem to really get it. Its been a couple years and its still crazy to think about. Like, how did that happen??

Your lil talk at the end of the video is very eye opening. I think when we're put in the worst situation we don't know its the worst. We make due with it and just tackle it bit by bit. We learn to adapt and when we adapt to something better, we start to disassociate with what we once knew. Its natural to disassociate or disconnect from something that had a negative impact/ stressful impact.
I'm sure many of us can relate that with 2020. I would say that year was by the worst for me even tho its now just a blur

Not just commenting for the algorithm, but commenting to say that I love some of the expressions you drew in this episode so much! It's amazing how much improvement you've made between watching some of your old videos and the ones you make today.
I've felt the same feeling as you, though I've never moved to a new country (only across town) but it's strange thinking back on it. I miss the old place sometimes too, though I wonder if the missing it is either what I did there, or if I'm just missing when life was a lot simpler and less noisy.

Your last bit about the past being like a dream, oh yeah I feel you. I've lived in like one hundred cities and I was excited in every move but after years of doing it it just feels meh and then when I tell people about it they're like "nah" so now I don't talk about it. When I see the cities I lived in movies or people talk about them I just remember it in my mind and it feels like a blurry memory that isn't even mine anymore. Things get weird when you grow up.

Speaking of Japan I never really understood why so many people seem to view it as some magical holy place to live or be, my guess is that a lot of people just assume their own culture is pretty bankrupt in a sense to want to seek out another so bad.
I've had a lot of friends and people that I knew that were obsessed with it, learning to speak/read/write in Japanese and viewed any food or snack/drink as immediately better simply because it was Japanese. I really do respect their commitment to hard work and superior quality in a lot of things but people have to realize it's a place like everywhere else, just because it looks like fun in anime doesn't mean it is in the real world.
If people out there feel like where they live is really boring (and hey it may be that) I'd encourage you to just travel period, go to Asia, go to Europe and check out other areas (even if you live in the US or Canada for example)

Yeah, humanity has always had a "grass is always greener on the other side" form of wonderlust (which is kinda really deeply set in our DNA, since ancient hominids used to migrate a lot).
It kinda reminds me of how early Hollywood would advertise a lot of glitz and glamour back in the '20s/'30s through their movies and radio, enough for people to glorify it as a paradise when it wasn't always that way (something similar to how the Gold Rush was advertised as well). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
