Thank you for this video! I decided in January to learn how to knit at the age of 75! Where i live it was difficult to find a knitting class. So i went to the library and borrowed a knitting book for beginners and with chopsticks learned how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off! I was able to knit a cap in the round, with a few dropped stitches and also practice knitting making dishcloths. I’m trying to learn to read charts so i can knit with several colors to knit a ski hat! Thanks again for this video on learning to read knitting charts! One day hopefully I’ll be an accomplished knitter! You are an inspiration! Mahalo from Hawaii!

I'm currently in Japan and rediscovered knitting. My mom taught me back when I was in elementary school for our crafts class, but I haven't really knitted anything since highschool. I went to a hobby shop and decided to get some yarn to make a scarf just so I can get a feel for the craft again. This then escalated to me starting two projects and looking into information on how to knit more complex things, since I never really learned how to knit anything but a straight line. In the shop where I'm getting all my supplies there are a lot of books with patterns, but I didn't want to rush into getting anything without having a better understanding of how to make sense of them. Your videos have been a huge help on my journey and I feel more confident in getting myself a magazine with patterns and challanging myself to my first big project. I wanted to tell you all this, because I'm usually the type to just watch videos and not really comment a lot, however you are making a difference and I wanted to thank you. I'm sure there are many more lurkers like me, so even though it might seem like there are few people who are engaging with your content there are at least 10x more hore are silently appreciative.

I enjoy lace work. I found my very first chart very daunting but here's what I've found after just diving in and deciding that struggling a bit was okay:
Every chart has a rhythm to it. For every knit2tog there'll be a yarn over somewhere to fix the balance.
This is not just the case for lace charts. Every pattern will have a pattern, so to speak. I recommend: just dive in and find the rhythm to your pattern. It might be a bit hard at first but Norman is right: you'll soon learn the language and you'll be fine creating knitted magic!
And don't forget to enjoy the ride!

Norman, can't keep praising you. You're my olive branch, everytime I encounter an issue.
For eg: Planned on taking the icelandic sweater pattern, which looked completely Greek and Latin for me. But I really wanted to understand, did lot of dry runs. Was totally unsuccessful.
That's when I came back to your video, and as expected there you are explaining and made me realise the ease of going thru the patterns.
However, shall comeback once a execute a successful Pattern knitting 🤞

This is great, straight forward and concise. I really just needed to understand the process…the right way to read a chart. Thank you for taking the time to explain it. ❤

Enjoyed your explanation of why knitting symbols and charts are like a language. I find seeing the pattern on a knitting chart gives a more spatial view of any repeated groups of stitches and how large they are. Good explanation, slow enough for beginners, detailed enough for more experienced knitters. Nice one.

Thanks for clearing this up. I am a knitter who have always steered away from charts.

Thanks for your channel! I’ve learn so much from you.
Can you explain when the chart has the symbol for “No stitch”. I’ve watch others explain and I’m hoping you will get thru to me!

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  3 ปีที่แล้ว

no stitch means "skip". So..if it's a repeat go back to the start.

Thanks for the explanations! I’m just starting to learn to knit and came across your videos and they are very helpful! A guy in my Schuhplattler group has really big calves and is having a hard time finding the Bavarian calf warmers that fit. I wanted to learn how to make the calf warmers to hopefully make him a pair. I hope I’m not being too ambitious 😅

Definitely. Tho loaferl are quite an ambitious project because a lot of them are very intricate. But if you start with a simple pattern, it's totally doable. You might have to insert a calf gusset, tho. 🙈

Hi Norman, Wow You can write Japanese! I remember when I lived in the United States, when I saw a knitting book, there were only text and there were no charts at all… I was wondering how these people can knit by text only instructions 😳 In Japan, most instruction books are mainly charts and rarely explained only with letters. It’s good to learn and understand both text only and chart. 😊
