Fun video. My 14-year-old granddaughter and I watched it together. She has been knitting since she was three years old and has progressed to designing her own patterns, with a preference for lace shawls. She has also started a group of young knitters, and after teaching them how to knit has a group that knit for both charity and for themselves. After 60 years of nearly daily knitting, while based on your definition I am firmly a master knitter, I consider myself just a knitter. There is always something new to learn or to try. Wow that’s amazing, I was taught knitting when I was 10 but I never picked it up back up until 3 weeks ago, I had to watch some TH-cam videos as I had forgotten, I’m 41 now so it’s been a while lol I’m still at beginner’s level
Love this video. And found it fun to compare how different the order I learned skills in was. I learned knit and purl stitches at the same time, and also learned cabling well before the mattress stitch. We all had different journeys in this craft and it's fascinating to hear how other people learned

Master knitter. Knitting is part of me. I knit every day. However, your tutorial on gloves inspired me to make them for the first time. I liked that it is a recipe as I have never knitted from a pattern without altering it. I never understood that my skillset was so advanced so thank you for your tutorial. It was fun and informative. Your videos are very enjoyable, thank you. I have designed and knitted many items and even given help and support to others on you tube and face book. I live in an isolated area and have little contact with others but my knitting has kept me going and I have even sold some here. Yarn is very difficult to obtain but I have gradually found suppliers. This has also contributed to my skillset because I have had to design my own patterns. Once again, thank you for your channel it helps me feel connected.

Same here. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I despite being advanced beginner in some things, I was pleased to also have a lot of intermediate and advanced skills.
I started knitting and crocheting at school. For myself in the beginning, for my 6 children, for 5 grandchildren and now for myself again. All socks, shawls, gloves, hats. Some vests, nice summer tops, intricately patterned lace scarves. I learned everything myself and there are for sure many mistakes. Because of that I like your channel. I have many things to learn.
So, I’m a master knitter then! Thank you for this fun walk through! I’m a trainer and have been for 20 years, from team building to clinical IT systems, and yarn crafts and machine embroidery are my go to hobbies. I do craft fairs and sell items occasionally. But I create for the love of doing, not selling. I was surrounded by crafters, my aunt was a seamstress, my Nan enjoyed tapestry, my mother a qualified knitting machine pattern maker. It’s a big part of my life ☘️
Cool video, I was surprised to have reached experienced 1 according to your scale :) The way I learn might be a bit strange because I always have a very concrete project in mind and I learn the new techniques that are required for it as I need them. Also, about specialization: I tend to have periods when I am interested in one thing, and I don't knit anything else for a month or two. Then when I have had my fill, I become interested in something else and don't touch the old obsession for quite some time.
I also learn this way. Right now, I can only do socks, which imply stockinette stitch, ribbing, elastic cast-on, decreases, knitting in the round. And I've learned so much around that one project!
I too have learned in this way. I decided I wanted to learn how to do something and I looked it up. I didn't care how hard they said it was. I haven't run out of my passion for one subject yet, but based on decades of crochet, I know I will. :D
I am an Advanced Beginner, Level 1, but I have worked hats with 4 needles, knitted in the round, and I enjoyed doing cables. I wish my hand movements were more economical like yours, and that my stitches were tighter and more uniform. Thanks for your story, that made learning the levels very interesting!
I’ve been knitting since I was 5 and consider myself an intermediate/advanced knitter. I’ve knit multiple Aran and lace sweaters but have never really done much colour work. I don’t think I could ever call myself a master knitter because to me, there’s always so much more to learn and I love that. I love that even if I spend years learning colourwork, there will still be countless people out there better than me who I can learn from.
My mother always told me that the more you know, the more you realize how little you know ! Don’t sell yourself short. Even master knitters have something new to learn!!
My mother taught me to read my knitting with every stitch she taught me when I was 9. My second project included cables because I didn't know they were hard. That's when I learned to read patterns. Mom also taught me that patterns are really just suggestions, and I frequently adapted them Other things I learned as I needed but mostly I crocheted. When I was 56, I discovered magic loop (even though I had used traveling loop for years to avoid using double pointed needles) and I started knitting socks. I rarely do any other type of needlework now. I have become addicted to knitting socks, cowls and shawls in fingering weight yarn. I use worsted weight only for baby blankets and lap robes. I can knit kace but don't enjoy really fussy lace patterns. I love using basic stitches like knit, purl, slip stitches. yarn overs and pass slip stitches overs to create complicated looking patterns. This has been an entertaining video.

Hi Norman! After years and years of crochet, I used the pandemic lockdowns to learn to knit. Now I can proudly say I'm an Intermediate level 3.5 knitter due in large part to great teachers like you. Other things I've learned over this fun journey is to attempt projects that teach you something new, be kind to yourself when the learning curve seems impossibly steep and NEVER start a new project after 9pm!
My granddaughters and I watched your video together and enjoyed it. My 16 year old granddaughter predicted she would be an "experienced beginner". She began knitting at age 3, designing at 10, and started her own knitting club - after teaching her friends to knit at 12. I would rate her higher, but as she says, there is always more to learn. Her sister is a beginner who knits potholders for gifts, and at this point has no desire to knit more. By your ranking, after 60+ years, of knitting nearly every day, I could be considered a master knitter. While I can knit anything I choose wirh relative ease, there is always something new to learn, and technique variations to execute as we play with our sticks and string.

I’m advanced 1 if you don’t count the color work. I just never had the desire, but I really should! I learned to crochet and knit backstage as an actress and now as a child guardian, and one of my greatest joys has been teaching the children I care for backstage how to knit and crochet. Some really take to it and advance far. All of the kids in the last revival if Les Miz completed a magic loop hat, some even with cables. Many still knit all the time and I’m so happy to have added this skill to their lives. Thank you for your lovely videos.
Advanced level 5, though I thoroughly enjoy just knitting patterns others have written as is. I’m more accustomed to taking inspiration from designers (I always buy the pattern!) and rewriting the pattern to my own tastes and measurements, but just following a pattern is so relaxing! Great video!

Taught myself the continental style and am loving knitting again. My favorite is socks at this time and knit a couple pairs a week. I it part of my every day routine now.

My mother taught me to knit more than 50 years ago. I enjoyed it, but was always worried I "wasn't doing it right." Now, after getting my first spinning wheel and falling in love with spinning and fiber, it was a natural next step to pick up the knitting needles again. This time, there was TH-cam. And I quickly came upon your channel! I can't tell you how much your calm, happy, reassuring tutorials have meant and continue to mean to me as a returning knitter! Interesting video, Norman! Wouldn't have considered myself a 'Master Knitter' but most of what you described is applicable. Designing pieces, subbing yarns and yarn weights, using knitter's graph paper to achieve shapes in new gauge, recreating pieces from an image, using visuals as inspiration for own creations, etc. Consider myself more of a 'process' knitter as find all the number crunching and problem solving of figuring out what's needed to obtain a certain result is usually a more rewarding challenge than the successful 'product/FO' itself. Being creative is a way of life, for me, and consider knitting to be the one area in which I"m able to excel... but embrace anything which gets the creative juices flowing.
I've been knitting for 2 months now, and I've crocheted for the past 9 years. Between my crochet experience and your tutorials I would say I'm at a Beginner 3 with technical knowledge through Intermediate 4 and a solid tension for even stitching. So far I have completed 2 projects and I am now on my 3rd project, a pair of socks. Everything has come out very nicely and I rather feel like I'm cheating. But anytime I feel like I'm missing something or messing up I just refer to your videos to learn a better technic for it. So thank you again for teaching me so much!!
well that was just so much fun! I feel like I'm all over the place as a knitted. I am confident with cables because I love them. Will do everything I can to avoid mattress stitch as I'm just awful at it. Just discovered the beauty of top down sweaters during covid. I would not have described myself as an experienced knitter, which is where I ended up according to the skill story. Your knitting test let me know I'm an advanced knitter level 5. I'm really proud of it. The only thing I cannot do is knitting without looking at it. But that's my way of doing things I love or want to accomplish as well as possible. I'm immersing in my project entirely and I love it. It's so relaxing. Watching TV would distract me. I always look for challenges and I'm proud of being able to master them. Recently stumbled into your channel and I find it so heartwarming and instructive at a time. My first project was Granny's favorite dishcloth. my MIL taught me and said it would help me to learn the basics (knit stitch, yarn over, increase, and decrease). I can tell you, I cursed more than I would like to admit! But eventually I got it. I am a continental knitter, and the purl stitch was one of the hardest things for me to learn. I did eventually get it, and now I don't even think about it. I am firmly in the intermediate category with a toe into experienced. My goal is to just have fun with it. If I never get to Advanced or Master, I am OK with that. I just make what I want, and before I know it, I've learned something new.

I've done almost everything you mentioned but at this point I learned to knit when I was 5 so It's been 45 years now, I still feel I'm far from a master. You taught me how to knit in reverse so I don't have to turn my work anymore. Today I started trying to pearl in reverse as well. I mostly crochet but have been doing both lately and am trying to miniaturising both crochet and knitting. It's just kinda difficult figuring out what to use as a needle when you're trying to work with 2 threads of embroidery or a single sewing thread.
What is good with knitting is even if you are a very good and knowledgeable knitter there is always something more to discover and to try. A life of knitting every day wouldn’t suffice and this is why I like it . Thanks for your videos and your kindness.

Ive been knitting for nearly 20 years, but much more in the last few years (I even recently learned crochet). fascinating to me how the projects you do alter what skills you acquire. I first learnt to knit as a child, but that was mostly scarves. My first proper project more recently was socks. I've also made a few shawls and a hat so knitting in the round and lace are both extremely comfortable for me but I have no idea how to do a mattress stitch because I've never needed it. So much of this hobby is picking up knowledge on the go - I love it.

actually it does. I once saw a study how around age 65-67 here in Germany we have a very high excess mortality. And they attributed that to the fact that people retire and then have no occupation, nothing to keep em busy, no social interaction, and just eat and watch tv all day. Which of course is anything but healthy - neither for your body nor your mind.

Beginner 4 after a week of knitting. I came from crochet (my mother taught me), and used your videos to learn the basics and work through a series of swatches in different stitch patterns while also learning how to fix my mistakes. In the next week I’m planning on attempting my first sock (that I don’t’ plan on wearing) in a thicker DK weight yarn so I can see what I’m doing better.

Such a Great Morale Booster! I learned how to re-write patterns when I realized (a LOT of) directions can be wrong, confusing etc. And this was before internet & TH-cam. I thoroughly embrace all that the internet provides today, a valuable tool for learning! I have binders, notebooks galore with my (endless) design tweaks, mods, rants, as well as (what I call..) my “Keeper” Patterns! I have a tendency to over-analyze patterns, but in my world, this usually leads to Happiness & Joy while I knit something I’ve modified, far removed from another’s design. And it’s been a Wonderful Journey...I cannot (won’t) stop learning! Thanks for your very informative vids...always something new to learn!!
I am solidly an Advanced Knitter. I certainly don't know every technique (I haven't done much lace, for example), but I know what my preferences are for knitting projects and can easily pick up new techniques thanks to my knowledge of knitting. I love to make my own patterns and projects and have been making gifts and commissions increasingly over the last few years. Knitting is absolutely a part of me, and I really appreciate your video because it has helped me to get past some of my "imposter syndrome," where I've been stuck feeling like I'm a decent knitter, but not a Good or Great knitter. However, I really need to take more pride in my work and recognize that I can say I'm a really good knitter and that's not a bad thing! Thank you, Norman 💜

EXPERIENCED 3 ❤️ Reasons why I LOVED your video, Norman: 1. I took myself for granted- never really looked at it this way. Whenever I learn something hard I beat myself up on every little mistake. This video helped me see I've progressed smoothly without tears for the first time in my life!!!! 2. If the hobby mentality worked for me without heartbreak then maybe I can transfer it over to other things I want to learn. (just enrolled at fine art academy to learn old masters portraiture). 3. OMG! I’m between Advanced beginner-Intermediate 2 🥰 this made me so happy! I restarted my knitting journey with my mom last year, I wanted to make something together with her. Long story short, here I am knitting my second cardigan along side many other pieces I knitted throughout the year.

I taught myself to knit 2 years ago curiosity of TH-cam creators. I prefer continental knitting over English since I've been crocheting for over 50 years. I was super surprised to see I would be ranked an advanced intermediate to experienced. I've come a long way in 2 years and still have so much to learn. I knit everyday and couldn't imagine a day without something on needles. Thank you for all your many instructional videos. They are very appreciated.

I love this.... I'm advance in sock knitting and really don't get patterns for them anymore unless it's a lace sock. However I'm for sure just a advanced beginner. Really tho unless someone is a master knitter aren't we always beginners at something, and advanced with others? Advanced. I learned how to knit and crochet by my mom when I was 7 years old. For years I preferred crochet but over the past 5-10 years I've been knitting more and more. Funny thing is that now I prefer knitting! I'm loving this channel to help me refine my skills!
By this grading system, I stand at level 5! It was that "I want to know more!" desire that propelled me to my proficiency portfolio, and all the while, I'm just truly enjoying this craft!
I started with knitting then ventured into crochet. And found out that I prefer crochet over knitting. Thus, my projects then onward are mostly done via crochet😂. It's fun and I just switched between methods as I like. TH-cam is a great place to learn more methods.

Being a beginner 4 as someone who considers myself a crocheter who dabbles in knitting was actually pretty surprising! I'm excited to be learning more about knitting these days.
I made it to Experienced 4. I had a love/hate relationship with knitting for many years as I learned to crochet first and I knitted way too tight. Somehow one day it just clicked and I fell in love with knitting. I'm obsessed with socks right now...2 at a time on 2 circulars...cuff down and recently toe up. I'm experimenting with my own designs. It's great!
Wow-thrilled to find I made it all the way to master knitter! My uncle taught me to knit when I was 10, and for decades I stayed in the advanced beginner/early intermediate stages. But in the last 15 years, without consciously deciding to do so, I progressed in my skills in leaps and bounds. In the loo ast decade, I started selling my knitted goods (friends & family really didn't need more knitted gifts), many of my own design, and accepting orders for things like bespoke sweaters, socks, or handwear. I find now that I often have 1 or 2 bigger WIPs going at the same time, but I'll put them down & knit some quick, simpler things as a break. So I still enjoy simple knitting, even while I challenge myself with more complex knitting. I enjoy your videos, as I appreciate how well you can put into words what I know with the knitting side of my brain, but can't always articulate the reasoning behind what I'm doing. Thanks for the clarity you bring to a complex set of skills!

I am an intermediate knitter that knows a few of the techniques mentioned for experienced. I am very happy with that, and also now I have a bit of an idea what could be my next steps when it comes to my learning. Colourwork is one of the things I find hard still and I just can’t really work it out, but I think practice would help me a lot.
Im level 5 intermediate knitter, ive been knitting for a out a year. I feel the reason that i took to knitting is because ive been crocheting for 2 years. I love fiber arts, and not a day goes by that im not knitting and crocheting. I truly love it.

I started knitting to try to connect with my paternal grandmother. She knitted for the Navy in WWII. I never met her but my dad talked about her knitting everywhere. I had a terrible accident at age 37 that demolished my spine. I got serious about learning to knit to distract myself from the pain. My daughter saved her allowance and purchased a kit with a book and 2 sets of needles. The best compliment I like to hear is, "That's beautiful. Can I have it?" Norman, you are blessed with a beautiful soul, a calming voice, and inspiring teaching method.
I just started knitting last Christmas because in 🇸🇪, they announced that the 2022 Christmas present was the home-knitted garment 🧶 now I totally didn’t manage to make any of that 😂but it surely kickstarted my knitting journey. And I’m pleasantly surprised to see that I’m somewhat an advanced beginner 😄 I’ve started knitting in the round with dpns but haven’t learned cables or fair isle (although I’ve done stripes) your videos have certainly played a huge role in advancing my knitting techniques, so thank you 😊🙏🏼🙏🏼
I found this video very helpful in showing me how far I have come since starting to knit 2 years ago. I'd say I'm an advanced knitter as I have done a little designing, often change patterns and I'm up for a challenge!
Intermediate 4 but I have done a few of the things mentioned in the next few steps. I become intrigued by a project and then learn the techniques required. 1930s and 40s sweaters have my interest now.
What a great journey through knitting skills! Thank you too, for pointing out that the joy of knitting is not related to the number of skills required beyond the basics. Based on your story, I came in at "Experienced - 3." I have been knitting for decades, but it is only in the last 4-5 years that I decided to dive into more complicated stitch patterns, garment knitting, color-work and adjusting patterns. I am thoroughly enjoying the ability to make a wider variety of items, but it is the act of knitting, transforming yarn into an item, that I most enjoy.

I've been knitting for about eight years now.. Surprisiingly, I am solidly intermediate, but with some experienced, advanced, and even master skills. Before this, I thought I was still a beginner. I think we are all a beginner in some aspect of knitting, and a master of others. I love this video and I love knitting even more now. I feel encouraged.

Absolutely Loved this video! After crocheting for a very long time, I decided to teach myself to knit. Lightly sanded chop sticks, hot glued bottoms at the ends, lol. It worked for practicing standard stitches. Began investing in knitting products, lol. To this date, I am still learning!!
You, Norman, are a genius! This video helped me understand that although I have been knitting for more than 50 years I am not an expert knitter but that is okay. Please keep up the great work.
Advanced Beginner 3! I love to knit in the round, but I'm not interested in color work. Started knitting on a whim four months ago and it's my new spin. Yarn and needles... I get lost in it. So relaxing, spending evenings making ugly crafts instead of writing ugly code. Nimble Needles videos got me started and stay with me on my journey. I'm already making less horrible... things. 😊 Time to support this person whose brought so much joy to my life.
As a quilter and knitter for a number of years, I have acquired skills to the degree that I now lead quilting an knitting classes/groups. In quilting there is a saying that there are no quilt police which basically means that there are many ways to do things. I also use that is the knitting groups. Just because the person sitting next to is doing something one way doesn’t mean the way you are knitting is wrong. Your story confirmed my strong belief that there are no knotty police also. Thank you for you time to help knitters(myself included) learn and grow!

Love it! While I did not make a clean cut for a certain level, it did make me feel much better to realize how much I have done, learned and variety of knitted projected I made.
I've always found that not knowing how difficult a skill is before attempting it, helps to learn it. I've often looked at a project and been determined to try it, regardless of complexity, and only afterwards have someone say 'Oh, that's a really hard skill, how long did it take you?' Sometimes ignorance is bliss, but it definitely makes hearing a suggested order of learning skills quite interesting to me, as I've only ever picked up the relevant skills for a particular pattern as I went along!!
I think I am a beginner level 3, although I do know how to do decreases as well. The last time I watched this video I was a level 1 and that was only a few months ago! Thank you dear Norman for teaching me how to knit! As a crocheter of 20+ years I really never thought I could figure out knitting until I found you! ❤ 🧶
OK - now I know I am an Advanced Beginner #2. I had to teach myself to knit and crochet. I am always very cautious. Also I have recently had my first stroke and I just cannot remember or understand. You are making things easier for me.

Still a Beginner. I only just learned this year this May and I so far am still learning color work. I can't seem to learn as most tutors on knitting on TH-cam are throwers but your channel definitely has helped me. I been a crocheter since 2018 and Continental knitting helped me as my left hand is just where I learn how to tension and your tutorials are helping me with my knitting journey. I have a long way to go (i just learned the importance of loose floats and puckering in fair isle. yikes) but thank you for so much for your videos!
What a fun stroll through knitting stitches, steps, techniques, levels, joy and satisfaction, and all. I love your ending explanation that the journeys makers take may vary and that beginners may still know and use some more advanced techniques. I have taught knitting for decades and it always surprises me to meet a student who claims, "I don't know much at all," only to discover that he has been double knitting for years. I'm at your advanced level with one exception: I not only purchase patterns because someone else created the design I can already execute on my own, but also because I might learn something new by reading or using that person's pattern. That is why I also watch your videos, even the most basic ones. Carry on! (The professional writer in me also loves that you created this as a story!)✍

Fun video. My 14-year-old granddaughter and I watched it together. She has been knitting since she was three years old and has progressed to designing her own patterns, with a preference for lace shawls. She has also started a group of young knitters, and after teaching them how to knit has a group that knit for both charity and for themselves. After 60 years of nearly daily knitting, while based on your definition I am firmly a master knitter, I consider myself just a knitter. There is always something new to learn or to try. Wow that’s amazing, I was taught knitting when I was 10 but I never picked it up back up until 3 weeks ago, I had to watch some TH-cam videos as I had forgotten, I’m 41 now so it’s been a while lol I’m still at beginner’s level

Love this video. And found it fun to compare how different the order I learned skills in was. I learned knit and purl stitches at the same time, and also learned cabling well before the mattress stitch. Master knitter. Knitting is part of me. I knit every day. However, your tutorial on gloves inspired me to make them for the first time. I liked that it is a recipe as I have never knitted from a pattern without altering it. I never understood that my skillset was so advanced so thank you for your tutorial. It was fun and informative. Your videos are very enjoyable, thank you. I have designed and knitted many items and even given help and support to others on you tube and face book. I live in an isolated area and have little contact with others but my knitting has kept me going and I have even sold some here. Yarn is very difficult to obtain but I have gradually found suppliers. This has also contributed to my skillset because I have had to design my own patterns. Once again, thank you for your channel it helps me feel connected.

Same here. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I despite being advanced beginner in some things, I was pleased to also have a lot of intermediate and advanced skills.
I started knitting and crocheting at school. For myself in the beginning, for my 6 children, for 5 grandchildren and now for myself again. All socks, shawls, gloves, hats. Some vests, nice summer tops, intricately patterned lace scarves. I learned everything myself and there are for sure many mistakes. Because of that I like your channel. I have many things to learn.
So, I’m a master knitter then! Thank you for this fun walk through! I’m a trainer and have been for 20 years, from team building to clinical IT systems, and yarn crafts and machine embroidery are my go to hobbies. I do craft fairs and sell items occasionally. But I create for the love of doing, not selling. I was surrounded by crafters, my aunt was a seamstress, my Nan enjoyed tapestry, my mother a qualified knitting machine pattern maker. It’s a big part of my life ☘️
Cool video, I was surprised to have reached experienced 1 according to your scale :) The way I learn might be a bit strange because I always have a very concrete project in mind and I learn the new techniques that are required for it as I need them. Also, about specialization: I tend to have periods when I am interested in one thing, and I don't knit anything else for a month or two. Then when I have had my fill, I become interested in something else and don't touch the old obsession for quite some time.
We are all unique and that should be celebrated..so..I wouldn't say that's strange. It's you! 😊🥰
I also learn this way. Right now, I can only do socks, which imply stockinette stitch, ribbing, elastic cast-on, decreases, knitting in the round. And I've learned so much around that one project!
I too have learned in this way. I decided I wanted to learn how to do something and I looked it up. I didn't care how hard they said it was. I haven't run out of my passion for one subject yet, but based on decades of crochet, I know I will. :D
I am an Advanced Beginner, Level 1, but I have worked hats with 4 needles, knitted in the round, and I enjoyed doing cables. I wish my hand movements were more economical like yours, and that my stitches were tighter and more uniform. Thanks for your story, that made learning the levels very interesting!

I have noticed a while back that as a garment is worn, the stitches tend to even out. Be kind to yourself. We are our own harshest critic.
I’ve been knitting since I was 5 and consider myself an intermediate/advanced knitter. I’ve knit multiple Aran and lace sweaters but have never really done much colour work. I don’t think I could ever call myself a master knitter because to me, there’s always so much more to learn and I love that. I love that even if I spend years learning colourwork, there will still be countless people out there better than me who I can learn from.
My mother always told me that the more you know, the more you realize how little you know ! Don’t sell yourself short. Even master knitters have something new to learn!!
Advanced knitter 1 - I was surprised that I have came that far along !!!
My mother taught me to read my knitting with every stitch she taught me when I was 9. My second project included cables because I didn't know they were hard. That's when I learned to read patterns. Mom also taught me that patterns are really just suggestions, and I frequently adapted them Other things I learned as I needed but mostly I crocheted. When I was 56, I discovered magic loop (even though I had used traveling loop for years to avoid using double pointed needles) and I started knitting socks. I rarely do any other type of needlework now. I have become addicted to knitting socks, cowls and shawls in fingering weight yarn. I use worsted weight only for baby blankets and lap robes. I can knit kace but don't enjoy really fussy lace patterns. I love using basic stitches like knit, purl, slip stitches. yarn overs and pass slip stitches overs to create complicated looking patterns. This has been an entertaining video.
I wish I could learn how to do socks.
I am an Intermediate lvl 5! I’ve made an adorable purse using Intarsia technique. My confidence has soared this morning knowing I am further along my knitting journey than I thought. Thank you Norman!

Hi Norman! After years and years of crochet, I used the pandemic lockdowns to learn to knit. Now I can proudly say I'm an Intermediate level 3.5 knitter due in large part to great teachers like you.
Other things I've learned over this fun journey is to attempt projects that teach you something new, be kind to yourself when the learning curve seems impossibly steep and NEVER start a new project after 9pm!

My granddaughters and I watched your video together and enjoyed it. My 16 year old granddaughter predicted she would be an "experienced beginner". She began knitting at age 3, designing at 10, and started her own knitting club - after teaching her friends to knit at 12. I would rate her higher, but as she says, there is always more to learn.
Her sister is a beginner who knits potholders for gifts, and at this point has no desire to knit more.
By your ranking, after 60+ years, of knitting nearly every day, I could be considered a master knitter. While I can knit anything I choose wirh relative ease, there is always something new to learn, and technique variations to execute as we play with our sticks and string.

I’m advanced 1 if you don’t count the color work. I just never had the desire, but I really should! I learned to crochet and knit backstage as an actress and now as a child guardian, and one of my greatest joys has been teaching the children I care for backstage how to knit and crochet. Some really take to it and advance far. All of the kids in the last revival if Les Miz completed a magic loop hat, some even with cables. Many still knit all the time and I’m so happy to have added this skill to their lives. Thank you for your lovely videos.
Advanced level 5, though I thoroughly enjoy just knitting patterns others have written as is. I’m more accustomed to taking inspiration from designers (I always buy the pattern!) and rewriting the pattern to my own tastes and measurements, but just following a pattern is so relaxing! Great video!

Advanced knitter. Thank you for your time. I often wondered what level I was. I learned to knit as a child of 10 via the English style. I did not knit much in my early adult years. I picked up my needles again about 15 years ago and
Taught myself the continental style and am loving knitting again. My favorite is socks at this time and knit a couple pairs a week. I it part of my every day routine now.
I too love sock knitting. I find it one of the most relaxing things to knit.

My mother taught me to knit more than 50 years ago. I enjoyed it, but was always worried I "wasn't doing it right." Now, after getting my first spinning wheel and falling in love with spinning and fiber, it was a natural next step to pick up the knitting needles again. This time, there was TH-cam. And I quickly came upon your channel! I can't tell you how much your calm, happy, reassuring tutorials have meant and continue to mean to me as a returning knitter! I no longer avoid challenges but am really welcoming them. Your Knitting School is so much fun. Thank you!
Interesting video, Norman! Wouldn't have considered myself a 'Master Knitter' but most of what you described is applicable. Designing pieces, subbing yarns and yarn weights, using knitter's graph paper to achieve shapes in new gauge, recreating pieces from an image, using visuals as inspiration for own creations, etc. Consider myself more of a 'process' knitter as find all the number crunching and problem solving of figuring out what's needed to obtain a certain result is usually a more rewarding challenge than the successful 'product/FO' itself. Being creative is a way of life, for me, and consider knitting to be the one area in which I"m able to excel... but embrace anything which gets the creative juices flowing.
I've been knitting for 2 months now, and I've crocheted for the past 9 years. Between my crochet experience and your tutorials I would say I'm at a Beginner 3 with technical knowledge through Intermediate 4 and a solid tension for even stitching. So far I have completed 2 projects and I am now on my 3rd project, a pair of socks. Everything has come out very nicely and I rather feel like I'm cheating. But anytime I feel like I'm missing something or messing up I just refer to your videos to learn a better technic for it.

well that was just so much fun! I feel like I'm all over the place as a knitted. I am confident with cables because I love them. Will do everything I can to avoid mattress stitch as I'm just awful at it. Just discovered the beauty of top down sweaters during covid. I would not have described myself as an experienced knitter, which is where I ended up according to the skill story. Your knitting test let me know I'm an advanced knitter level 5. I'm really proud of it. The only thing I cannot do is knitting without looking at it. But that's my way of doing things I love or want to accomplish as well as possible. I'm immersing in my project entirely and I love it. It's so relaxing. Watching TV would distract me. I always look for challenges and I'm proud of being able to master them. Recently stumbled into your channel and I find it so heartwarming and instructive at a time. My first project was Granny's favorite dishcloth. my MIL taught me and said it would help me to learn the basics (knit stitch, yarn over, increase, and decrease). I can tell you, I cursed more than I would like to admit! But eventually I got it. I am a continental knitter, and the purl stitch was one of the hardest things for me to learn. I did eventually get it, and now I don't even think about it. I am firmly in the intermediate category with a toe into experienced. My goal is to just have fun with it. If I never get to Advanced or Master, I am OK with that. I just make what I want, and before I know it, I've learned something new.
I'm a beginner and I know that, but I like this as a path to follow. I found you yesterday and your videos are gold! As someone who's been from time to time trying to understand how to knit, you made it so clear I can only thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️
I've done almost everything you mentioned but at this point I learned to knit when I was 5 so It's been 45 years now, I still feel I'm far from a master. You taught me how to knit in reverse so I don't have to turn my work anymore. Today I started trying to pearl in reverse as well. I mostly crochet but have been doing both lately and am trying to miniaturising both crochet and knitting. It's just kinda difficult figuring out what to use as a needle when you're trying to work with 2 threads of embroidery or a single sewing thread.
What is good with knitting is even if you are a very good and knowledgeable knitter there is always something more to discover and to try. A life of knitting every day wouldn’t suffice and this is why I like it . Thanks for your videos and your kindness.

I would have told anyone I am an intermediate knitter. According to this I'm an experienced knitter! Ive been knitting for nearly 20 years, but much more in the last few years (I even recently learned crochet). fascinating to me how the projects you do alter what skills you acquire. I first learnt to knit as a child, but that was mostly scarves. My first proper project more recently was socks. I've also made a few shawls and a hat so knitting in the round and lace are both extremely comfortable for me but I have no idea how to do a mattress stitch because I've never needed it.
So much of this hobby is picking up knowledge on the go - I love it.

actually it does. I once saw a study how around age 65-67 here in Germany we have a very high excess mortality. And they attributed that to the fact that people retire and then have no occupation, nothing to keep em busy, no social interaction, and just eat and watch tv all day. Which of course is anything but healthy - neither for your body nor your mind.
@@NimbleNeedles when I retired at 68 I was determined not to slow down or sit around doing nothing. I have seen way too many people get dementia or worse!
Beginner 4 after a week of knitting. I came from crochet (my mother taught me), and used your videos to learn the basics and work through a series of swatches in different stitch patterns while also learning how to fix my mistakes. In the next week I’m planning on attempting my first sock (that I don’t’ plan on wearing) in a thicker DK weight yarn so I can see what I’m doing better.

Such a Great Morale Booster! I learned how to re-write patterns when I realized (a LOT of) directions can be wrong, confusing etc. And this was before internet & TH-cam. I thoroughly embrace all that the internet provides today, a valuable tool for learning! I have binders, notebooks galore with my (endless) design tweaks, mods, rants, as well as (what I call..) my “Keeper” Patterns! I have a tendency to over-analyze patterns, but in my world, this usually leads to Happiness & Joy while I knit something I’ve modified, far removed from another’s design. I’ve been knitting for about a year now I learnt from my mum and grandmother and was impressed to find out I was an adv beginner 2
I am solidly an Advanced Knitter. I certainly don't know every technique (I haven't done much lace, for example), but I know what my preferences are for knitting projects and can easily pick up new techniques thanks to my knowledge of knitting. I love to make my own patterns and projects and have been making gifts and commissions increasingly over the last few years. Knitting is absolutely a part of me, and I really appreciate your video because it has helped me to get past some of my "imposter syndrome," where I've been stuck feeling like I'm a decent knitter, but not a Good or Great knitter. However, I really need to take more pride in my work and recognize that I can say I'm a really good knitter and that's not a bad thing! Thank you, Norman 💜
It definitely sounds like u should. And it was one f my goals with this video. So many knitters think they r still barely a beginner...when progress is slow, things can be deceiving. So, definitely be more confident. ( but I too sometimes go down that imposter syndrome lane 🙈🙈)

Reasons why I LOVED your video, Norman:
1. I took myself for granted- never really looked at it this way. Whenever I learn something hard I beat myself up on every little mistake. This video helped me see I've progressed smoothly without tears for the first time in my life!!!!
2. If the hobby mentality worked for me without heartbreak then maybe I can transfer it over to other things I want to learn. (just enrolled at fine art academy to learn old masters portraiture).
3. Confidence booster! never thought about designing my own knitwear (I've only tweaked existing ones) but after watching this, I think that's my next knitting adventure.

OMG! I’m between Advanced beginner-Intermediate 2 🥰 this made me so happy! I restarted my knitting journey with my mom last year, I wanted to make something together with her. Long story short, here I am knitting my second cardigan along side many other pieces I knitted throughout the year.

fun to learn what I haven't tried yet! I'd say I am about intermediate level 2. I enjoy learning new things but like simple projects that I don't have to think about too much.
I taught myself to knit 2 years ago curiosity of TH-cam creators. I prefer continental knitting over English since I've been crocheting for over 50 years. I was super surprised to see I would be ranked an advanced intermediate to experienced. I've come a long way in 2 years and still have so much to learn. I knit everyday and couldn't imagine a day without something on needles. Thank you for all your many instructional videos. They are very appreciated.

I love this.... I'm advance in sock knitting and really don't get patterns for them anymore unless it's a lace sock. However I'm for sure just a advanced beginner. Really tho unless someone is a master knitter aren't we always beginners at something, and advanced with others? We are always learning from a master and maybe some less then masters are master knitters to brand new knitters. Norman you always go above and beyond. I enjoy your content very much. Thank you.

Advanced. I learned how to knit and crochet by my mom when I was 7 years old. For years I preferred crochet but over the past 5-10 years I've been knitting more and more. Funny thing is that now I prefer knitting! I'm loving this channel to help me refine my skills!

Expert 2-3. Working on fitting sweaters better, modifying necklines, complex colorwork etc. And thanks for the fun and clever knitting story!!
By this grading system, I stand at level 5! It was that "I want to know more!" desire that propelled me to my proficiency portfolio, and all the while, I'm just truly enjoying this craft!
I started with knitting then ventured into crochet. And found out that I prefer crochet over knitting. Thus, my projects then onward are mostly done via crochet😂. It's fun and I just switched between methods as I like. TH-cam is a great place to learn more methods.
I'm pleased to have reached the intermediate level - and that's good enough for me. 😊 I also have other time-consuming and much more favourite hobbies. 🎵

Being a beginner 4 as someone who considers myself a crocheter who dabbles in knitting was actually pretty surprising! I'm excited to be learning more about knitting these days.
I made it to Experienced 4. I had a love/hate relationship with knitting for many years as I learned to crochet first and I knitted way too tight. Somehow one day it just clicked and I fell in love with knitting. I'm obsessed with socks right now...2 at a time on 2 circulars...cuff down and recently toe up. I'm experimenting with my own designs. It's great!

Wow-thrilled to find I made it all the way to master knitter! My uncle taught me to knit when I was 10, and for decades I stayed in the advanced beginner/early intermediate stages. But in the last 15 years, without consciously deciding to do so, I progressed in my skills in leaps and bounds. In the loo ast decade, I started selling my knitted goods (friends & family really didn't need more knitted gifts), many of my own design, and accepting orders for things like bespoke sweaters, socks, or handwear. I find now that I often have 1 or 2 bigger WIPs going at the same time, but I'll put them down & knit some quick, simpler things as a break. So I still enjoy simple knitting, even while I challenge myself with more complex knitting.
I enjoy your videos, as I appreciate how well you can put into words what I know with the knitting side of my brain, but can't always articulate the reasoning behind what I'm doing. Thanks for the clarity you bring to a complex set of skills!

I am an intermediate knitter that knows a few of the techniques mentioned for experienced. I am very happy with that, and also now I have a bit of an idea what could be my next steps when it comes to my learning. Colourwork is one of the things I find hard still and I just can’t really work it out, but I think practice would help me a lot.
It was a fun experience for me as well! Maybe I'll do something similar soon...or maybe just videos of me reading lace charts, hahaha
Im level 5 intermediate knitter, ive been knitting for a out a year. I feel the reason that i took to knitting is because ive been crocheting for 2 years. I love fiber arts, and not a day goes by that im not knitting and crocheting. I truly love it.

I started knitting to try to connect with my paternal grandmother. She knitted for the Navy in WWII. I never met her but my dad talked about her knitting everywhere. I had a terrible accident at age 37 that demolished my spine. I got serious about learning to knit to distract myself from the pain. My daughter saved her allowance and purchased a kit with a book and 2 sets of needles. The best compliment I like to hear is, "That's beautiful. Can I have it?"

I just started knitting last Christmas because in 🇸🇪, they announced that the 2022 Christmas present was the home-knitted garment 🧶 now I totally didn’t manage to make any of that 😂but it surely kickstarted my knitting journey. And I’m pleasantly surprised to see that I’m somewhat an advanced beginner 😄 I’ve started knitting in the round with dpns but haven’t learned cables or fair isle (although I’ve done stripes) your videos have certainly played a huge role in advancing my knitting techniques, so thank you 😊🙏🏼🙏🏼
I found this video very helpful in showing me how far I have come since starting to knit 2 years ago. I'd say I'm an advanced knitter as I have done a little designing, often change patterns and I'm up for a challenge!
Intermediate 4 but I have done a few of the things mentioned in the next few steps. I become intrigued by a project and then learn the techniques required. 1930s and 40s sweaters have my interest now.

What a great journey through knitting skills! Thank you too, for pointing out that the joy of knitting is not related to the number of skills required beyond the basics. Based on your story, I came in at "Experienced - 3." I have been knitting for decades, but it is only in the last 4-5 years that I decided to dive into more complicated stitch patterns, garment knitting, color-work and adjusting patterns. I am thoroughly enjoying the ability to make a wider variety of items, but it is the act of knitting, transforming yarn into an item, that I most enjoy.
Norman you taught me everything I know which isn't much. I started last month and it brings me so much joy. I am working on my first blanket to use on my couch. I am knitting and purling like a pro.

I've been knitting for about eight years now.. Surprisiingly, I am solidly intermediate, but with some experienced, advanced, and even master skills. Before this, I thought I was still a beginner. I think we are all a beginner in some aspect of knitting, and a master of others. I love this video and I love knitting even more now. I feel encouraged.

Absolutely Loved this video! After crocheting for a very long time, I decided to teach myself to knit. Lightly sanded chop sticks, hot glued bottoms at the ends, lol. It worked for practicing standard stitches. Began investing in knitting products, lol. To this date, I am still learning!!

Advanced Beginner 3! I love to knit in the round, but I'm not interested in color work. Started knitting on a whim four months ago and it's my new spin. Yarn and needles... I get lost in it. So relaxing, spending evenings making ugly crafts instead of writing ugly code.

As a quilter and knitter for a number of years, I have acquired skills to the degree that I now lead quilting an knitting classes/groups. In quilting there is a saying that there are no quilt police which basically means that there are many ways to do things. I also use that is the knitting groups. Just because the person sitting next to is doing something one way doesn’t mean the way you are knitting is wrong. Your story confirmed my strong belief that there are no knotty police also. Thank you for you time to help knitters(myself included) learn and grow!
no, I am definitely no police. more like all all-you-can-eat buffet where you might consider to skip the hashbrowns so you can fit in more of the good stuff :P

Love it! While I did not make a clean cut for a certain level, it did make me feel much better to realize how much I have done, learned and variety of knitted projected I made.
I've always found that not knowing how difficult a skill is before attempting it, helps to learn it. I've often looked at a project and been determined to try it, regardless of complexity, and only afterwards have someone say 'Oh, that's a really hard skill, how long did it take you?' Sometimes ignorance is bliss, but it definitely makes hearing a suggested order of learning skills quite interesting to me, as I've only ever picked up the relevant skills for a particular pattern as I went along!!
I think I am a beginner level 3, although I do know how to do decreases as well. The last time I watched this video I was a level 1 and that was only a few months ago! Thank you dear Norman for teaching me how to knit! As a crocheter of 20+ years I really never thought I could figure out knitting until I found you! ❤ 🧶

OK - now I know I am an Advanced Beginner #2. I had to teach myself to knit and crochet. I am always very cautious. Also I have recently had my first stroke and I just cannot remember or understand. You are making things easier for me.

Still a Beginner. I only just learned this year this May and I so far am still learning color work. I can't seem to learn as most tutors on knitting on TH-cam are throwers but your channel definitely has helped me. I been a crocheter since 2018 and Continental knitting helped me as my left hand is just where I learn how to tension and your tutorials are helping me with my knitting journey.
I have a long way to go (i just learned the importance of loose floats and puckering in fair isle. yikes) but thank you for so much for your videos!

What a fun stroll through knitting stitches, steps, techniques, levels, joy and satisfaction, and all. I love your ending explanation that the journeys makers take may vary and that beginners may still know and use some more advanced techniques. I have taught knitting for decades and it always surprises me to meet a student who claims, "I don't know much at all," only to discover that he has been double knitting for years. I'm at your advanced level with one exception: I not only purchase patterns because someone else created the design I can already execute on my own, but also because I might learn something new by reading or using that person's pattern. That is why I also watch your videos, even the most basic ones. Carry on! (The professional writer in me also loves that you created this as a story!)✍
