- Riding at Minnewaska State Park Preserve and The Mohonk Preserve should be on every cyclists list. The gravel carriage trail paths are absolutely awesome with some of the most stunning views I've ever seen in the eastern US. Waterfalls, overlooks, ledges, lakes - it is truly wonderful. I can't recommend this route enough. Our week in the Hudson Valley was great...more to come.

Wow! This ride looked gorgeous! Thanks for including links to the maps / routes, hope I get to try it out.
Its so great - I just got back from a trip to Michigan and around the fire a number of new friends were talking about this spot.
This is a four season gem.
When there is enough snow, the cross country skiing is amazing !!
Oh yeah - that makes total sense!
Absolutely!
Great XC skiing at Minnie (and Mohonk) for sure! The park grooms the trails for the skiers. No hiking permitted unless using snowshoes and stick to the sides of trail.
Whoa that ride was simply stunning - there's nothing even close that I could ride in the UK, so thanks for letting me watch over your shoulder .
I’ve seen some pretty cool riding vids from up in Scotland that seem rad.
Cheers!
There are great rides in Scotland, for sure but the topography looks almost prehistoric and more like the drop-offs and vistas you might see in South American jungles...(minus the trees!)
As @bigangus3590 said, thanks for letting us ride on your shoulders.
Peace!
Love the trails at Lake Minnewaska! I made the drive up there a couple times a year to ride when I lived in CT. The road riding around there is pretty spectacular too.
Its so cool. We did do road ride too - down from Kingston over The Gunk and into Poughkeepsie.
My hometown. I have ridden there above the clouds below the trail in the valley. Late spring, Early summer the mountain laurel blooms, and you should be careful of animals using the trails. My first ride there was in 1991 and last was last October, close to when you visited. Soon to return, but NEVER on a weekend.
Thanks Tim!
Holy smokes. The most beautiful videos thank you. Thank you THANK YOU!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
😎
Wow!!! Amazing scenery!!
Yeah - such a cool place!
Incredible ride. Putting it on the East Coast bucket list.
Yeah - it actually felt more like something out west!
Mohonk Mountain House has a vibe of the Alps, and prices to match!
I did hear that it is extremely expensive.
Beautiful.
🍂🍁
The Gunks are beautiful! I've always know them as a premier climbing area, climbed a bit there when I lived on the East coast, heard of the carriage trails but have never seen them. Would love to do some of this riding. Thanks for great video!
Its so good!
So glad you found this! I'm there next fall.
Definitely worth the trip!
You nailed the awosting falls pronunciation! Thats how I've heard it pronounced for the last few years anyway.
Nice - I forgot to write it down before going into my sound booth - so I was afraid I wasn't even saying the right name! Anyways - that spot is so rad!
Looks like another epic ride
This one is one of the best. The views are just amazing!
Great video, looks awesome. I live in the Hudson Valley and have heard great things about this. I’ve never ridden this before but will definitely plan it now! Thanks!
Do it!!!
Fantastic views on this ride!
It’s stunning there!
Excellent ride, great views. Thanks for taking us along
One of the best - cheers!
Cool! Rode around the gravel trails closer to New Paltz.
This is on my list.
Definitely get out there - it’s amazing.
Wow those are some incredible views!
Yeah - this place is so rad!
Wow!!!
Gorgeous! . . . oh, and what’s up? 😂
🤓
These are my local trails, I would highly recommend coming back in the summer to do some swimming in Awosting, Lake Minnewaska, and any of the creeks and streams outside of the park.
Our one buddy mentioned that he had swam here before. I bet it would be awesome!
@@TimFitzwater it is for sure
I’m a member and Volunteer for the Mohonk Preserve. I ride bike Patrol in the preserve. I’ve ridden thousands of miles in the Shawangunks. I’m glad you found it.
A great as the foliage is, the gunks are better in June.
When you come back, start from Spring Farm. West Trapps get loaded with Rock Climbers.
What would make it better in June?
We did see rock climber but being a Monday it wasn’t so packed.
@@TimFitzwater Mountain Laurel. The entire ridge is blanketed with Laurel Blooms. A problem with the gunks is the proximity to NYC means it gets very busy on weekends. It will be especially crowded near entry points like West Trapps. But, there are places that hikers never go. You guys only really scratched the surface. The open space institute has been restoring some of the old carriage roads for gravel biking. Also, you need to get off the bike any take some footpaths. That’s a whole other discussion.
Ah - gotcha.
Yeah - the Monday planning wasn't an accident.
We know we only scratched the surface as our time on vacation is limited and that was till a lot of climbing and riding for a day.
We definitely noticed that the hiking trails would be rad - but we were on a cycling trip. Would definitely be different if we lived closer...
@@TimFitzwater You did well. You could stay on your bike exclusively and never get bored. I’ll easily ride 30-40 miles just on patrol in the preserve. The carriage network was not constructed for bikes. But, they are perfect for gravel riding. The truth is, because of the distances involved, hikers or climbers will never see the entire place. The best way to get the most out of a visit is to ride a bike.
@@kentgoldingsI road Mohonk recently it was fine on a weekday as far as crowds go. I have a question maybe you can help me with. Is there any way to incorporate sky top tower on a bike visit? I know there's an event you can participate in that allows you up there on a bike, but I didn't want to do that. I'm wondering if I would be allowed to walk my bike up there or if they wouldn't let me do that. Or is there some other way to maybe lock the bikes somewhere and head up on foot? Any advice or ideas would be appreciated.
Spectacular!
It is - absolutely wonderful spot!
Awesome. Almost detoured here on my return from 2021 Nutmeg but cold rain hit. Looks like I missed out, gotta go back
Too bad. Definitely worth trying to do it next year post-Nutmeg.
U Americans are so blessed with true wide nature,in germany it's almost agro desert❤
It is amazing - and this is an hour and a half from New York City - not the wide open western states!
I did the first part of your ride at the same time of year over two weekends. I do not recommend weekends because it’s packed with people on all the trails. Plus you have to get there and get in line in your car at least 30 min before the gates open. All that aside. This is probably the most stunning place I’ve ever ridden.
I figured that was the case. It is so amazing and so close to NYC.
I think I might agree - not sure if I've ridden somewhere prettier.
Very cool , looks like a ride I need to check out awesome video
Thanks!
Definitely put it on your list!
Greetings from Germany
What a great landscape really awesome natural coulors.😀👍
Greetings! This is a truly unique place!
i stayed at the hotel up there bsack in the day.
What an awesome ride the scenery was incredible you seem to have captured what autumn is in upstate by👍. I live on Long Island. Been up around bear mountain Harriman West Point. In a car but I would to bike up in the same place u guys were. All the best n ty for posting great video. ✌️
It’s worth making the trip for sure!
We drove by bear mountain last year too(didn’t ride).
I’ve been interested in the idea of taking the ferry from Bridgeport to Long Island and riding into the city. Trying to figure out if there is a good route. Do you ever do it?
@@TimFitzwater how doing my friend, well actually I finally got back on the saddle after 22 years not riding. Was pretty much busy being father to 3 kids plus few surgeries all the fun stuff life throws at us. Lol now that everyone is grown up I got bicycle in July I have already put 230 miles on the bike from just riding in my neighborhood. That being said I’m sorry I wouldn’t even know where to start to ride from Long Island to the city. One think I know for sure it would be a dangerous ride. So if u do attempt it be very careful to many hit n runs all the time. Best of luck to you ✌️
I've heard it is a mix. Some chil roads but some fast roads....
rode that about 6 times. I used to live in Harriman/Monroe. My buddy found a Timber Rattler nest at the top of one of those rock outcroppings, in a crack. So be careful poking around on those .New Paltz is a great place to burrito and hang . Harriman State Park is also worth riding in, stunning lakes , streams etc. A lot more technical riding in some places , boulders , Jagged rocks, logs. Some very cool old iron mines here and there .
I’ve ridden there a few hundred times. My son is a climber so he’d climb while I did a multi hour ride. Some of the best views are up by the Mohonk Mountain House. I never had any problems riding there. Did younride by the main climbing area? It’s pretty cool to see. The rail trail from New Paltz heading north is also great.
I think it was just the route we had downloaded was made by someone who had it routed onto walking paths - it was too busy when they went up there to just ride them.
We rode a bunch of the rail trail down from Kingston and all the to Poughkeepsie a few days later in a loop.
Dramatic views and a waterfall for good measure👍
Yeah! Great riding in the best scenery!
"Over look over load" ❤ i like that! Yup amazing and so beautiful brother, looking forward to the next vid, thanks for sharing 👍
I thought of that phrase while riding it - seems like it couldn’t be a real thing but it is!
Cheers - thanks!
WOW…I’m at AWE 😮 Such AWESOME 😍 AMAZING views. This ride is going to have to go on my Bike It List for sure. ❤🧡💛
...and as you know the GoPro doesn't fully do that experience justice.
Definitely put it on your list!
Thanks for the intro. I had never heard of it either. Very beautiful.
Seems like it should almost be a household name - right?
Cheers!
Cool country to be riding in those rocks looked nasty.
It was only a short section of the rougher stuff(we did all have beefy tires though because we were also mountain biking that week)
Even that was totally worth it though!
@@TimFitzwater Awesome Scenery great video.
Beautiful scenery. Looks like a awesome place to ride.
It was incredible!
Wow. This looks stunning. My vertigo was kicking in from your footage. Bucket list for sure. 7 hrs is doable. Good stuff!
Yeah - even a GoPro can do this place justice - its that amazing. We loved it!
Absolutely beautiful area. Unfortunately, I've been off the bike a couple weeks due to a broken foot, so I'm enjoying the fall riding via your vids!
Erin broke her ankle later in the trip so I feel ya!
Thanks!
Awesome video! We also have the River to Ridge trail (Hudson River-Gunks) and a few great rail trails. It's good you rode on a Monday, as the weekends are worse than Disney world! Thanks again for all your great content!
Thanks!
We did ride two of the rail trails - made a loop to Poughkeepsie from Kingston. Also have some MTB vids from the are too. Lots more to come from the Hudson Valley!
Cheers!
spent days walking this area. the house has tons of people that do the walks, as you saw the foliage is beautiful. I can completely imagine some areas to be unrideable due to swarm of people just walking to see things. I actually want to do the bike ride soon. This sounds sweet. insane views. So many photo spots. great time of year for this.
Yeah - I think we nailed peak foliage. Kind of made me wish I had my pro camera and lenses - but then again we wouldn't have gotten anywhere...I think Monday saved us and made it rideable though there were still some leaf peepers not paying any attention.
It seem like some of the hikes would be cool too. Probably get some interesting terrain compared to the carriage trails.
Cheers!
Those views Tim :-) incredible.
It really is amazing - and these are just the ones I took photos and videos of.
Skytop is inaccessible to bikes. I don’t think you can even walk it up there. They have a Gravel Ride that is routed by Skytop. Skytop is owned by the Mohonk Mountain House. A trail pass from the Mohonk Preserve lets you enter though the trail system. A hike from pine road is about 6-miles with a 1,200 accent. You can park your bike and walk up, but there’s no convenient parking spot.
TBH, Skytop is not all that and there’s so much to see on a bike that you’re not missing anything.
Another excellent video. Beautiful countryside.
Thanks! It is one of the prettiest places I've been.
Well done!! Another great ride
Thanks! This was one of the best rides!
Worth staying at the Mohonk Mountain House, beautiful stuff.
Is it? I mean - seems more worth it to ride up and look at it - the prices per night someone mentioned were crazy high!
Awesome Tim.
I believe it's pronounced "close enough".
Thanks! 😎
5:00 Just WOW! 👀
Yeah. So much of that really!

🐢 !!!
Mohonk is the bees knees.
Some might even say the eels ankles.
very nice
So nice
I’ve been there many times! Didn’t happen to go to the lookout tower?
No - that was the Mohonk loop I skipped with my sore knee.
I can’t ride a 2 wheel bike anymore do you think an incumbent trike could do that ride? I’m dying here that looks so beautiful. I was having balance problems I’m good on my tike. I rode a horse my whole life I had to give that up also. My trike is getting me back out there. I love your videos.
It is always a little difficult for me to answer a question like this as I simply have no personal experience. The surface should be fine - except the end part where we are down by the lake - that got chunky and narrow in places. I think it would mostly come down to how you can climb on the trike - this is a very climby ride to get to the views.
Thanks - and glad you found a solution to get out there!
Wow this looks amazing! Can you share the RWGPS link to the full loop you were planning to do?
It was awesome! I never saved that route(was following Erin & Ben) but i don't want to share it anyways - it had stuff that shouldn't be on there. I would just search Mohonk on Ride W/ GPS.
@@TimFitzwater All good! I'll see what I can find. Thanks for the great vids!
What sort of tires do you recommend at Minnewaska?
Any decent gravel tires are fine. It is mostly pretty chill - just a little more rocks down by lake in the end but still nothing crazy. I would have been just as happy on my 42s but you could do it with less.
Right on. Appreciate the reply. Can’t wait to take the family up there.
What is cutty?
Sorry - speaking like a hip New Yorker! 🤓
Cutty as in “cuts” - rougher, off the beaten path.
