Over the years, their outfits have evolved to suit the personality of each member. Each has a design from different regions of the world. Saiki (vocalist) is based on a Latin style, Miku (rhythm guitar, 2nd vocalist) is a French maid, Kanami (lead guitarist) comes from an English maid, MISA (bassist) is a Chinese influenced design, and Akane (drummer) is in a page boy style.

Good description of the outfits however Miku's uniform she has said, is what you would see at a Maid noodle cafe like the one she used to work at, A french maid is a sexualized outfit and Band-Maid has never sexualized their appearance relying instead on their abilities.

Great, great, reaction Lilyanyan!!!!!! I love that you waited until the end to post your reaction. So many others interrupt the music way too often to spout some rather obvious stuff that could wait until the end. I also love that you enlarged the screen for us to see the musicians. Too many others give us this tiny screen where we can barely see them. I realize we are interested in their opinions about the music and bands, but we also like to see the musicians and hear as much of their performance as posssible. It means little to me to watch someone's face that I don't really know and squint to find what it is I want to see and hear. You have done very well in that you haven't done any of these things and I for one greatly appreciate this. Now for your analysis, which was quite good BTW, wherein you expressed that you liked it but it wasn't necessarily your kind of music. That is very much your perogative, and I respect that. There are many, many of us fans of Band Maid and we don't demand you like what we like, just that you give Band Maid a listen and see if they are for you. You did that and I am pleased you did. I would ask (not demand) that you might listen to some of their other songs before completely saying the are not for you. These women are musicians and composers of the highest quality in rock today. I have been listening to rock since the first days of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, and the Rolling Stones to name some of the greatest early bands and these women are on a par with them. To me they have brought rock/mteal back from the dead, so I ask that maybe you would give them just a few more listens. Some of their music is quite fast and metalish, while others are almost full ballads. Their music is almost always positive in approach. Anyway, Thanks Lady, and I have subscribed to your channel because I just like your approach to making reactions and I look forward to enjoying more music with you in the future.

Thank you for your input on how I record. That's just how my brain works and I like to see the big/overall video/performance first before I share.
Even for Kpop groups, I don't necessarily LOVE a group but I am always down to listen to their other songs. I think even if I'm not a huge fan of a group, I might like some of their songs; so, I'm totally down to listen to other Band Maid's songs!
Thank you for understanding with my "serious" face because as I watch I want to remember all the things I want to share too haha.

    Welcome to Band-Maid!
This performance is from their 10th anniversary tour final at the Yokohama Arena last November.
They have over 100 good songs (no bad one). They will not block as long as you stay with their official YT channel contents.
In an interview, Saiki explained about the "?" mark in the title of this song. When Saiki wrote the lyrics, she wanted to use the phrase "I hate you". She decided the title to be "HATE", and then she realized that "HATE" could be read "はて" in Japanese. Because "はて" is typically used in question, she put "?" to make the title "HATE?". I'm sure that Saiki was smiling a lot when decided on this title with "?" because she guessed that English speaking fans would be puzzled by it. "はて?" can be translated as "What?"

Band-Maid is an amazing group of musicians and they can vary their styles of songs. They can go hard, like they did here, or they can go soft and acoustic. There are videos of just Saiki, the singer, and Kanami, the lead guitarist playing an acoustic guitar and there are videos of "acoustic" versions of songs. I think you would enjoy them.

Nice react Yan! Although Band-Maid's focal point is hard rock, they venture into many other styles and genres. If you want to ease into it a little, they do some absolutely beautiful mid-tempo songs and ballads like Daydreaming, endless story, and memorable. You might enjoy the production work and snarky wit of Influencer. IMO one of their most gorgeous songs and MVs is Gio-Cho, a song based on Osaka's Maiko culture.

You might like "Daydreaming" (official music video or the live video). Band-Maid don't block people using their official videos. Also, "Endless Story" from the same concert as "Hate?" -- in fact, the finale of that concert -- was almost a ballad, and definitely emotional. Saiki (lead singer) was also expressing the band's appreciation for the audience -- for all their fans -- during that song.

It’s just a guess on my part, but rather than wanting the object of the song to die (the line, “I don’t care if you die out”), it’s expressing an indifference to the ending of their lineage. I think that’s more in line with the other lyrics about their misplaced self importance and stuff.

Their maid outfits all started out the same. They eventually adopted different styles.
Miku (rhythm guitar) adopted the maid cafe style, which she used to do as one of her jobs.
Akane (drums) took on the butler style.
Kanami (lead guitar) became the French maid.
Misa (bass) absolutely hated the maid outfits and starting dressing in all black like an "assassin maid".
Saiki (lead vocals) became the head housekeeper..

@@lilyanyan You're most welcome. Here is the rest of that file, which explains more about Band-Maid.
Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead.
Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition.
Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition.
Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music.
Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well)
So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance.
And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD!
      ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!!
Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan.

Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning"
On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"...
The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited)
This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their TH-cam channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill.
Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid.
If you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask in a video, the description of a video or in the comment section. I and most other "Maidiacs" as many of us call ourselves, would be more than happy to answer.

Since you seem to be familiar with Japanese culture, it would help to know that the woman who plays rhythm guitar and sub-vocal (who writes most lyrics of their songs these days) actually worked at a maid cafe in Akihabara. The image came from the backiing vocalist/rythm guitarist Miku Kobato.
It's based on the numerous of maid cafes in Japan. She worked in a maid cafè for a year, and found the juxtaposition between cute maids and Hard-rock interesting.
Before working there she had been a part of a J-pop group, so when she went to the management and proposed it she got a "go".
She first went looking for a guitarist, and found Kanami Tono, who became an important part of the project.
Not only as a friend, but composer, arranger, her guitar teacher and brought along Akane on drums, who again brought along MISA who are the backbone of their sound.
If you like softer sound their earlier material is more of pop-punk.
I see some propose looking at their closer "Endless story", beside it I'm thinking about "Daydreaming", "About us", "Page", "Time", "Rock in me" who all got a softer touch.
Sadly, not all of these got a video, which might be a testament to their wide appeal!

Welcome to the BandMaid experience. The greatest proper rock and roll band of the 21st century. Here's some opinions and facts:
•Bass solos are more likely to happen than not
•Guitar solos are shorter, far shorter than you would like them to be
•Unless you are superhuman, you will not/ can not be able to pick up everything they're doing to make that song great on the first listen.
•Genre? Genres?? We don' need no stinkin" genre!
•If you like a hard rocking crazy fast tune? Well how about it done as a slower acoustic version? They do that.
•The linchpin member of the band gets the least notice/praise. The Mighty Miku Kobato founder/lead singer steps back to make way for a new more hard rock vocalist. They want her to hold a guitar so she does and learns to play on the fly, performing all the while she's learning. So the person who willed the band into existence, who is the primary lyricist, the only member who sings and plays an instrument most of the time gets the least comments from reactors.
•10 plus years with the same line up. Think about that.
•More hooks, riffs and motifs in many songs than most bands have on an album. Check it out. No hyperbole.
•Use of puns, wordplay using homophones between Japanese and English are not the exception. They are typical of Kobato's lyrics.
•Despite the fact that their LIVE videos are superior to the official studio MV"s the latter are excellent. Funny, graphic, innovative and stunningly beautiful works of art describe what you get with BandMaid's official MV's.
•As close to the Beatles in terms of unique persona of the members as any group since the Monkees. MISA is quiet and drinks. Akane is happy and eats, Miku is klutzy and CUTE, Kanami is an airhead who crushes on Saiki and Saiki was the Ice Queen. But the Ice Queen has thoroughly thawed. See Yokohama's Endless Story! Their image is carefully crafted or spontaneous or both.
•Many songs have catch phrases or singalong sections to engage the audience. Many songs are in English and Japanese. Most songs are full of joy as well.
•They're having a ball. They enjoy performing. They enjoy the fans. They enjoy each other.
•Make no mistake, this is not a regular band.

Thank you for all this information! These days, bands or groups don't or can't last long in the music industry. However, them being on their 10th (and more to come), that's impressive and I'm glad that they're still strong!

3:57 - And there it is, the Barefoot Assassin breaks Lilyanyan's poker face! 😂😂
8:00 - It's actually poetic. The support guitarist in question, Miku, founded the band back in 2013 and they all wore obvious maid outfits. They've had a slow evolution to more subtle maid costume designs and you see here (at their 10th anniversary concert in Yokohama Arena) that Miku is the only one left wearing the OG BAND-MAID style maid outfit.
9:45 - BAND-MAID also did a concert cameo in the Netflix assassin movie Kate (2021) and performed "Choose me" and "Blooming" (react to these):
Here ya' go for recommendations, welcome to the pigeon hole (err rabbit hole); it only gets better from here:
    Freedom (2020 live)
    Domination (2020 live)
    Warning! (MV)
    Secret MAIKO Lips (MV)
SHOW THEM (with The Warning - MV)
    From Now On (MV)
    Shambles (MV)

Good obsrervations, and I like the mention of Miku, with the purple hair, as she was the founder of the band, and who had the idea of a "maid" look to contrast with the hard rock performances - IIRC, it's referred to as "the gap".

Right away it’s obvious about your understanding of Japanese culture because you’re the only reactor I’ve seen who picked up on the Maid reference in their name before seeing or hearing them.
Other reactors did know only because they had seen pictures of them or read about them. I think you would be interested in their history and how the band came about.
I like how you go through sections of the song at the end as you give your thoughts.
