Lol, you have so much great music in front of you. Ten years of ass kicking rock. One thing about The Maids. They don't play a genre, Band Maid IS a genre. Pop, punk, prog, thrash, rock, metal. They do it all, and better than anyone else.

great to see you reacting to the Maids. Lovebites were in attendance at this show, and were spotted by the Maids and waved to. the 2 drummers Haruna from Lovebites and Akane from Band Maid are friends that often celebrate birthdays together when possible. In June the Warning will be visiting Japan for the first time and doing a joint concert with the Maids on June 12. they met at Aftershock Festival and it turns out the bands are fans of each other so it should be an amazing show, plus hopefully a collab like they recently did with Mike Einziger of Incubus for the song "Bestie" whom they opened for recently in Tokyo. cheers

This band single handedly rejuvenated my love for music again.....my playlist was all 70's and 80's music. And was kinda burned out on it.
Band Maids writing and musicianship is second to none....and after seeing them live last year has turned me into a Maidiac!!!!!

Band-Maid is an amazing hard rock band that play an incredible range of styles, while always retaining their own singular sound. Hard, soft, fast, slow, punk, metal, acoustic, etc. If you like variety and spice in your hard rock, Band-Maid is it. Kanami is the lead guitarist and a genius songwriter. You will never get the same song twice. The lead vocalist and (in this case) the lyricist is Saiki. The one who looked most like a maid is Miku (founder, rhythm guitar, backup vox, primary lyricist). The incredible rhythm section is comprised of MISA (bass) and Akane (drums). If you want to hear a great ballad from the same show, try Endless Story. Or if you want to go back to where they started and the song that saved them, start with Thrill and just keep going forward!

Welcome to the BandMaid experience. The greatest proper rock and roll band of the 21st century. Here's some opinions and facts:
•Bass solos are more likely to happen than not
•Guitar solos are shorter, far shorter than you would like them to be
•Unless you are superhuman, you will not/ can not be able to pick up everything they're doing to make that song great on the first listen.
•Genre? Genres?? We don' need no stinkin" genre!
•You like a hard rocking crazy fast tune? Well how about it done as a slower acoustic version? They do that.
    •April Fools Day 2019
As a joke they recorded a redo of Secret my Lips with traditional instruments and with lyrics in a Kyoto dialect. MV is stunningly beautiful.
•The linchpin member of the band gets the least notice/praise. The Mighty Miku Kobato founder/lead singer steps back to make way for a new more hard rock vocalist. They want her to hold a guitar so she does and learns to play on the fly, performing all the while she's learning. So the person who willed the band into existence, who is the primary lyricist, the only member who sings and plays an instrument most of the time gets the least comments from reactors. Oh yeah she has her own signature model guitar from Zematis (after playing less than 10 yrs)
•There is no "I" in BANDMAID. Well ok there is one "I" but my point is the songs are written by BandMaid. Not just Kanami Tono. The highly innovative bass and drum lines are created by Akane and MISA. There are no George songs and John&Paul songs. There are only BandMaid songs.
•10 plus years with the same line up. Think about that.
•More hooks, riffs and motifs in many songs than most bands have on an album. Check it out. No hyperbole.
•Use of puns, wordplay using homophones between Japanese and English are not the exception. They are typical of Kobato's lyrics.
•Despite the fact that their LIVE videos are superior to the official studio MV"s the latter are excellent. Funny, graphic, innovative and stunningly beautiful works of art describe what you get with BandMaid's official MV's.
•As close to the Beatles in terms of unique persona of the members as any group since the Monkees. MISA is quiet and drinks. Akane is happy and eats, Miku is klutzy and CUTE, Kanami is an airhead who crushes on Saiki and Saiki was the Ice Queen. But the Ice Queen has thoroughly thawed. See Yokohama's Endless Story! Their image is carefully crafted or spontaneous or both.
•Many songs have catch phrases or singalong sections to engage the audience. Many songs are in English and Japanese. Most songs are full of joy as well.
•They're having a ball. They enjoy performing. They enjoy the fans. They enjoy each other.
•Make no mistake, this is not a regular band.

I am pretty sure the lyric "ten minutes of limp gymnastics" is what it's supposed to translate to. This song is about a person who cheated on the singer, Saiki's, friend. They usually have more upbeat lyrics, but moral of the story, don't piss off Band-Maid! ;-) Thanks for the reaction!

After seeing your reaction, I asked a few students about Band-Aid. One of the girls told me that her aunt has a Band-Aid car. The car is completely covered in photos of the band. Of course, people here overdo many things. For example, we have themed 7-11s here. You can see Pokemon stores, One Piece stores, Spy Family stores. And the restaurants are worse. One near my home is called "Toilet Restaurant". Food is served in toilets and urinals. Ice cream is shaped like poo. Another, unfortunately it's closed now, is an H. R. Ginger teahouse. He's the artist who created the alien for the movies "Aliens". The furniture was shaped from his artwork. Creepy!!!

The Maids here are introducing the latest revision of their wardrobe as they perform in the final concert of their yearlong, international, 10th Anniversary Tour, last November. In the very beginning, they all wore French maid outfits, aprons and all, but vocalist SAIKI and bassist MISA were never fully on board with that and soon appeared in Spanish Lady and Chinese inspired outfits, respectively. You have opened the floodgates. They may be the best rock group in the world today (I think they are). They are certainly the most creative band since the Beatles, and they are top-tier musicians.
I saw many of the classic rock bands - Purple, Zeppelin, Queen, Santana, many more, all in their heyday. I’ve seen Band-maid three times and their performances stand up to any of those legendary bands.
You are going to get a lot of suggestions. First, a little background on the band:
Saiki Atsumi - Lead vocals Born Feb 8, 1994
    MISA - Bass Born Oct 15, 1992
Kanami Tono - Lead guitar, Main composer and arranger Born Sept 28, 1991
Miku Kobato - Rhythm guitar, backing vocal Born Oct 21, 1991
Akane Hirose - Drums Born Dec 14, 1990
Miku was working in a Maid Café after being in an idol group that didn’t break through. She envisoned the idea of a maid-band that plays hard rock and metal. She recruited Kanami, after finding a Kanami guitar cover on line; Kanami then recruited Akane, who recruited MISA. Akane and MISA had been students together at the Tokyo Music Academy. The group decided they needed more vocal “oomph”, and collectively recruited Saiki. Miku didn't know how to play guitar when they started, so Kanami has been teaching her. She's become good so fast that she is really adding to the music mix, and Maidiacs are daring to dream of a dual shred.
The band was struggling early on, and in 2014, even as the label was considering dropping them, they posted the music video for “Thrill” which went viral globally. When they realized what was going on, it gave them the momentum to forge ahead, and they have now done multiple tours of Europe and the U.S. and are building a global fanbase who call themselves the Maidiacs.
They have released seven full albums, as well as several EPs, singles and music videos. They have put out around 170 songs, covering a wide variety of styles and sounds, without any duds. They combine a punk vibe with instrumental virtuosity (two things that are often seen as being incompatible), and have done some amazing progressive-rock songs and ballads with a metal edge to them.
They toured the U.S. in 2022 and sold out 14 cities in less than 48 hours. They followed it up with a 2023 tour which had to be expanded from their original plans. Their fan base skews heavily to actual practicing musicians. Some of those followed the band to multiple dates and documented everything on youtube-some of the footage is hilarious.
I’ve seen them in 2019, 2022 and 2023. Their shows are truly life-reaffirming. So far no announcements of another European tour but it seems likely in 2024.
Band-Maid are that rare band that sound perfect live, even better than in the studio. Everything they have posted from their 10thAnniversary concert in Yokohama is absolute fire-I have bought the DVD and recommend you do too. 33 songs, 3 hours of insanity. The best clip on YT from that concert is “Hate?” which you just watched.

Any Maids track always ROCKS!!! The ladies are in their early 30s now and have been rocking for almost 10 years with plenty of Solo work from Misa, Kanami and Akane. The great thing is they always look so happy.
Try Thrill the track that blew them up on the world stage, after a slow start it suddenly went viral outside of Japan (the label was about let them go when this happened in 2015), Freedom, Onset, From now on, Without Holding Back, Hate? Are all great tracks and they have an extensive back catalogue.
Welcome Masters and Princesses to the 5 Band-Maid members:
SAIKI Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. The youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions.
MIKU Kobato (Me-Ku), "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals and lyricist. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR Spokes Pigeon. I believe she couldn’t play when she formed the band and was tutored by Kanami.
KANAMI Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want is more!
AKANE Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa), "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA!

Kanami, Misa and Akane are just top notch musicians. Their playing has character as well as chops. Miku has grown into a rock solid rhythm guitarist. She underrates her own vocal ability - she's a really good singer too. As for Saiki's voice, it's stronger now than it was 10 years ago.
    Such an excellent band.

If Band-Maid tours anywhere near you - see them! They put on an incredible show, full of energy and subtle humor. This quintet has been working together for eleven years, sharing the ups and the downs, writing a huge catalog of music unique to their style. They love to experiment and they've created some truly unique compositions. Animators have commissioned Anime theme songs from them, and when they go off script they have produced heart melting ballads.
They love April Fools jokes. Check out their Band-Maiko videos: "Secret Maiko Lips" and "Gion-cho". You'll see them totally differently! Band-Maid always goes the extra mile to generate a smile.

That's Misa on bass and Kanami on lead guitar having a little duel. Misa is more of a lead guitarist playing bass, she's that good. Akane back there on the drums, and Saiki on lead vocals.
Miku (rhythm guitar/ vocals) formed the band in 2013 , she used to work in a Japanese maid café, and the aesthetic was her vision. 7 albums to date.
Band Maid is more hard rock, and LOVEBITES is more heavy metal. This is a newer video. To see where they came from, try "Thrill", the song that got them going and saved the band.
Japan has more where that came from. Check out Nemophila with the song "Oiran" (official live).🤘🤘

Yep - you're right about the drummer's feet. She's known for her double pedal craziness. Best band there is - I've not missed a day in the last five years listening to them. And the "Hate" comes from a friend of hers whose boyfriend and/or husband cheated on her during covid. The lead singer wrote the lyrics and they even made her tone them down! (usually the rhythm guitarist/band founder/backup vocals writes the lyrics.) They also play lots of different styles and genres, so there's something in their catalogue for everyone. Beautiful ballads? Hard groove 70's ish rock? Fast metal/rock - check check and check.

This song was not written, for once, by Miku (on rhythm guitar, the only one who now wears a maid outfit) but by the vocalist, Saiki. The question mark is there because there is a Japanese word "はて” that is alphabetically spelled "hate". When Saiki wrote the lyrics of this song, she wanted to use the phrase "I hate you", and she also realized that the English word "hate" can be read "はて" in Japanese. Because "はて” is generally used in question, she decided to put "?" after "HATE"
1:54 - The translation is correct on this performance, though admittedly they can get words wrong sometimes. I've translated 6 of Band-Maid's MV's that didn't have subtitles in English and was pretty pleased with them...but did make a beginners error on one of them by assuming what I heard was an English phrase when in fact it was part of the Japanese lyrics. It happens. In their live MV, from this same gig, for the song DON'T YOU TELL ME, they use the word "Dye" instead of "Die". 🤘🤘PS As Alexander Pope once said "Whoever thinks a perfect piece to see, thinks of what never was, nor is, nor ever shall be". A man who hadn't seen Band-Maid play live, obviously!

This is from their ten-year anniversary tour. This is one of Misa and komicho's infamous faceoffs. The drummer, Akane Hirose, did not know girls were allowed to play rock drums until she saw Nao, the drummer from MAXIMUM THE HORMONE playing. She is now one of Jimmy Page's favorite drummers.
MAXIMUM THE HORMONE is VERY influential in the Japanese rock/hard rock/metal scene. Sooner or later, you will get recommendations for them and, as a warning, they are a WILD ride. Multiple time, key and genre changes in the same song.
Believe it or not Band Maid was almost dropped by their management company and were saved by a TH-cam music video. To see their first YT MV look for the video for their song, Thrill.

The stereotypes are so wrong :) I lived in Japan for 11 years, and people there are just like people anywhere. In fact, my wife is from Japan, and she is the absolute opposite of a demure little lady. She's incredibly opinionated, hot-headed, and swears like a sailor. She says she should've been Italian.
Anyway, these ladies have been together for a long time, have incredible chemistry together, and insane talent. And they're not as young as many people think. They're in their early 30s, and I hope they're still rocking out in their 50s.

The "10 minutes" part means "shoboi exercise" in Japanese. "Shoboi" is an expression that refers to something that is "no big deal" or "insignificant" or has no value. In the context, it can be understood that it refers to men and women, but it is not slang for Japanese people, and the words only express that they are worthless.

Back in the 70s, there was a girl gang who dressed like school girls. Except these school girls carried knives and bats which they would use anytime guys would get fresh!
Ain't gonna lie, but I think that's awesome!

The Japanese, pretty generally, love puns. The language is especially rich for puns, with the spoken language, plus Kanji plus two syllabaries. One of them in romanji, which is to say Latin letter renderings of Japanese syllables. The title of Hate? is a pun, based on the romanji.
In Japanese, the expression ha-te ("hah-teh") is always a question, meaning something like "Is that so?". (I think.) So, Saiki made a visual pun based on the resemblance of the English word "hate" and Japanese romanji for "ha-te". But once you listen to the song, of course, the implied question is answered!
BAND-MAID are my favorite band in the world. I saw them live last year in the US, and yes, this is what they sound like! That said, Japan has a vast stock of great rock and metal bands. Many of the all-female ones are especially talented and ferocious. E.g., Lovebites, Hanabie, Gacharic Spin, Nemophila, Trident, Hagane, Bridear.
Subscribed, and thanks for the reaction! A mixed-sex band I heartily suggest, too. Maximum the Hormone. I suggest starting with Yoshu Fukushu, Hungry Pride, or (if you want to jump into the deep end, first) A.L.I.E.N.

band maid is definitely one of the best hard rock bands in the world. They do stray into metal as you saw and even have some groove and rock ballads but definitely are hard rock, they do tour the US almost every year, so catch them live if you can they put on an awesome show. The lead guitarist writes the music and the rhythm guitarist is the band leader and writes the lyrics, at least they have written their own for the last 7 years or so the earlier 3 albums were not written by them but you can still feel their influence. There are few bands who can play as well as they do live and for long concerts as well, they are as good live as the kpop exteremely talenetd vocal group mamamoo is live with their vocals. Few groups can attain live performances like band mand or mamamoo which the live performance is as good as the recorded albums, sometimes better than recorded versions, the Live performance of Domination is imho better than the MV for it. They have well over 100 songs all of them as great as this or better. I suggest the live Manners, Black Hole video, it is from their live streamed concert during covid which I did see live when it happened. Manners is groove and Black Hole is Metal. Influencer MV is awesome, No God is awesome for the bass, the live of Play, domination, Wonderland, Freedom, Moratorium are all great, Bubble is a tribute to freddy mercury, Blooming and Non fiction days are early songs, Gion Cho is as their Band Maiko april fools alter egos and they have an acoustic concert they did live for christmas a couple of years ago where they redid 14 of their hard rock songs on acoustic guitars. Pick anything, they never do bad songs.

Greetings to our Canadian Queen. (I mean that sincerely not in a creepy way lol) 😊
This is such a great song to showcase all the amazing talent in the band. Miku often gets overlooked in this song but she does some really cool stuff. I’ve given this song the subtitle of “Don’t piss off Saiki!”
And “10 minutes of limp gymnastics” is one of the best lines I’ve heard! 😅
    🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
It’s worth researching the background of the band and where the Maid theme comes from.
You’re correct about the “double time” with the feet on the drums. She has what is called a double pedal (pretty much every drummer nowadays has them) so she plays with both feet to get rapid beats. Some drummers use them on a single kick drum like Akane does and others have two kick drums like Haruna from Lovebites.
Band-Maid is more considered hard rock although some of their songs crossover into other genres. Lovebites is considered metal but again, will slip in others genres. Nemophila, another all female Japanese group do the same. I love that these women are not letting genres decide what they’ll play!

Welcome & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 I witnessed this very performance at the venue on Nov.26, last year. Very exciting 3-hour-40-minute-long show with 33-song setlist. (Happy fatigue thereafter 😄)
Band-Maid is one of the best bands in our country, especially in live performance. We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.) Lovebites, who you have already reacted to, is one of them.
Uh-oh, we also say "Japan is the country obsessed by Jazz". It had started earlier than rock 😄

Another great band from Japan is NEMOPHILA. For a first listen I'd recommend their song Adabana th-cam.com/video/AxYiOwsu6wU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=e_O66a-DcGQZFZwD. If you're up for some instrumentals I also recommend listening to Asterism. Their not as well known yet, but these kids (young adults now) will blow your mind. Their songs Rising Moon th-cam.com/video/IfxMi0Bx4x0/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared and Dawn th-cam.com/video/buQPvINJcA0/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared are awesome.

I'm pretty sure I know what "10 minutes of limp gymnastics" means, in any language. Rumor has it, it was only 9. Might be the deepest burn I've ever heard in a song. Ever. I'd rather Taylor Swift write a break up song about me than Saichan, who wrote this about her best friends cheating husband. Ouch!

There are plenty more kickass Japanese all-women metal and rock bands: Hanabie, Nemophila, Aldious, Trident, KOIAI, Gacharic Spin and many others. They are all very different and all huge fun. I much prefer the positivity of these bands to the depressing crap that makes up a lot of European and American metal.

And yes, what you were hearing was Akane using both of her feet to play what is called a "Double Pedal" that allows her to hit the large kick drum faster. And that wasn't even as fast as she go. Hate?'s BPM is 180, "Black Hole" is 220 BPM and many of us were surprised that Akane's feet hadn't fallen off.
You are now just on road that is over 130 songs wide and 10+ years long, so please don't hesitate to choose a lane. Most of the Ladies discography is available on their TH-cam Channel under the Releases Tab. And even if there is no MV, if you just wanted to react to a song, go ahead, all of their songs are good and we all enjoy them.

@@MrsRealistic You are welcome. Here is the remainder of that particular file so you know more about the formation of Band-Maid.
Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead.
Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition.
Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition.
Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music.
Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well)
So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance.
And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD!
      ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!!
Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan.

Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning"
On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"...
The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited)
This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their TH-cam channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill.
Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid.
Many of us have much more information we would be delighted to share. So if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

This song in particular and a lot of their newer material has lots of elements of traditional Heavy Metal, as much as you likely don't like associating that metal term to Band-Maid. Metal is just a sub-genre of Rock and they tend to blend a bit of it in their songs.

This was their 10th anniversary tour final concert at Yokohama Arena. They will be 11 years together with the same lineup in coming August.
"10 minutes of limp gymnastics"...the direct translation of the Japanese lyrics is "about 10 minutes of poor exercise". So it is about right😏
In an interview, Saiki (lead vocal) explained about the "?" mark in the title of this song. When Saiki wrote the lyrics, she wanted to use the phrase "I hate you". She decided the title to be "HATE", and then she realized that "HATE" could be read "はて" in Japanese. Because "はて" is typically used in question, she put "?" to make the title "HATE?". I'm sure that Saiki was smiling a lot when decided on this title with "?" because she guessed that English speaking fans would be puzzled by it. "はて?" can be translated as "What?"
