It has sassy character(s), it just doesn't assume that alone will carry it. The writing has more to it than "sassy cool character does sassy cool things"
I loved the inclusion of sign language! I'm trying to learn it as someone with auditory processing issues, some degree of selective mutism and a hard of hearing mother and seeing it used made me real happy.
That inclusion is how you know this is woke trash. I can see the check boxes being ticked as the pilot aired. And it wouldn't be so bad if it weren't so insultingly bland. I've seen this all done before and better. There was nothing to hook me in. Dialogue is bland. Lore dump exposition is awful. Setting is generic horror on da sea totally not cuthulu mythos at home. And the protagonists are literally not interesting, completely smooth no edge no nothing. I swear to god I've already seen this episode done in another cartoon already. Give me something, anything to remember this as unique. People's taste in art has fallen into the fucking gutter. Why is it every show now needs to be this bland appeals to everyone made for nobody sludge? Being corporate goo of a show is not an aspirational goal. It is a failure of creativity, which is exactly what this pilot succeeded in becoming.
this seems rly unique and innovative. love the art style, and the sound effects and having a lot of the music integrated into the actual world with like the record players and piano and stuff really makes it more atmospheric and immerses you into the world
The climax and ending were wholesome and a great subversion of the roles Port and Umi had up until that point. The whole crew should be proud of such a magnificent pilot!
from the first second this entire pilot held my attention holy HECK The fable, the characters AND their designs, the writing, the tone, and exposition ahhh it's BEYOND AMAZING
The Animation and storytelling in this pilot was amazing you and the team should be incredibly proud of yourselfs for a project like this. I hope this turns into a series
I love how "show don't tell" this is with how it implies that the kids broke the moon and foreshadows that "ankle" is the titan. Umi (海) is Japanese for "sea" so the name of the show is referring to the 2 characters. 18:13 Japanese text are the English words "miracle musical" transliterated. I also really appreciate the "hard of hearing" type subtitles. My hearing isn't that bad (but it also isn't the best).
@@stefperb9531 1:02 the kids are shown in a picture of the moon breaking 5:49 kids look suddenly guilty when "the shatter" is mentioned 11:05 "we owe it to these people to help after what we did" Not explicitly stated but it does make sense that they somehow caused it. It would explain why the kids are collecting the shards and somehow have a moon shard compass. 12:08 Ankle "knows everything about Bonnie" (which turns out to be moon shard related) and he's briefly shown to have suspicious tassels and a magical/evil sounding voice. We never actually see ankle (except his hair) but his form (especially the tassels) is similar to the 4th titan (Tiamat) shown at 0:21 His entire graveyard scene and 16:26 gives off the impression that he's much more powerful than he's letting on
"Introduction to snow" just popping out of nowhere scared the hell out of me lol. One of the last things I'd have expected in Indie animation, just Miracle Musical happening
I heard the midnight crew song in the background at 3:30 and instantly like hearing a sleeper agent activation code paused the video and audibly said the words "You're a fucking homestuck" and then continued to watch the video like nothing happened. I see you.
i was hoping to find someone in the comments who knew the song from homestuck- as soon as it started playing i, who was laid down, cartoonishly fumbled my phone straight on to my face in staggered recognition
11:18 the smile is a really good detail- it adds the sense of Umi being proud of Ports' persistence (Umi says it later anyway, but the little details are what makes the "hey I'm proud of you" mini speech have value.) idk maybe I'm looking to deep😅
INTRODUCTION TO THE SNOW MENTIONED!!!!!!!!! But seriously WHAT an amazing pilot!! This scratches every part of my fantasy-ocean setting- brain and I'm SOOO excited to see what comes of iT AUGH!!! The team of people who worked on this deserve all the praise and more
Indie animations being this successful has filled me with so much pure joy. It’s the best time now than ever to share pilots on TH-cam and I am so happy to see it
I know everyone it's talking about it but i truly felt some Introduction To The Snow vibes while watching it and hearing it playing at the end get me so "😭❤️" The animation it's awesome, the character designs are beautiful, and the foreshadowing at the end made me very excited! I can't wait to see what's coming next!! ✨⭐
Be real man. There are a lot of amazing indie projects, but if I had a gun to my head, this is without a doubt the one least deserving of further development. Nothing to do with style or personal enjoyment. Its just formulaic garbage, its uninspired, I honestly couldn't summarize the plot it just left no impression in my mind.
That intro with the type writer exposition just made me think of Porco Rosso so that's already a win! The animation is stunning particularly the waves I could stare at them for hours on loop. Great characters both main and background in term of looks and personality. The design of the settings of each location looks well loved. Ankle is an amazing tease of a character. DISM; that song fills me with so much dread, but here dream sweet in sea major actually feels nice, welcoming even And that ending song is FANTASTIC! It's so melodic and sweet. The end credit slides too are a welcome sight. Hope we see more of this beautifully curated world! I'm hooked!
have you listened to the entirety of Hawaii part ii? It's not dream sweet playing in the end, it's the first song, Introduction to the Snow. It's much slower and more contemplative as opposed to Dream Sweet's quick and foreboding introduction, which is probably why it feels welcoming. It's the opening song after all.
I'm convinced you are not a human being. This has got to be some kind of positive shill campaign paid to promote the project and give a pretense that there is audience appeal. How much do your services cost?
I personally wish this was SO much more popular, the animation, voice acting, and character were all so wonderful and creative! The story was a bit hard to follow but I think that’s because we’ve only got the pilot just to be fair and I absolutely cannot wait until this is a full project Yes Definitely Absolutely
My jaw dropped when I heard Hawaii Part: 2 start playing, inspired choice! This may only be a pilot but I'm already enthralled by the world that has been crafted, the charming characters within, and the storybook epic story unfolding. Hope the best for this team behind this.
What fucking world building? A exposition dump that said dere waz sum godz and one was a bad boy and got locked away but then we needed conflict so da bad boy broke out? Gee. I haven't heard that one at least a dozen times before. What is unique about this story?
I finally got a chance to watch the pilot of Port By The Sea, and I must say it was very well written and animated. It’s very inspiring to me, and out of all the voice roles, I loved Elizabeth Maxwell as Umi the most because of her serious personality. I can see this shaping up to be something bigger in the future! Fantastic work, Georden Whitman!
I love the way the plot is introduced as if somebody was typing and documenting it, but also love the ending with that calm serene tone(and with a Miracle Music song). It looks like it uses a classic style at first but it has its own distinct stuff, it's just the beginning and the feeling that this is not a classic adventure of the day type of cartoon is already there
This design has great potencial, I just imagine how it would engage has a lot to unravel and best of all, it focuses on THE *OCEAN* I have high hopes for this work, even if it takes a while to have a season.
First episode and I already have a theory, if you look at 0:47 you can see that the shape of two of thw titan's horns eerily coincide with the shape of protagonists' hair. So I propose the theory that the protagonists are some kind of reincarnation/avatar/something of the titans.
They also mention in front of the graveyard that they caused this. Plus they react strongly to anything related to the shatter. PLUS they have a compass that can track the shatters of moon.
@@APT2786 Does make you wonder, if they aren't titan reincarnations/avatars, what did they do that shattered their moon, and why do they have a compass that can track the moon shards?
I think the evil titan that was inside the moon somehow escaped so the reincarnations of the other titans have to recollect the moon parts to lock up the bad Titan once and for all @@joshuagannon6566
This is so good. The writing, the voice acting, the animation MY GOODNESS THE ANIMATION! Also the use of Introduction to the Snow was such a nice touch
I love how in game-like/fictional worlds 5:24 characters react like this "Oh! Unexpected guests!" While in reality, it'd be more like "Who the hell are you?! Get out of my house! I'm armed/Calling the police" :') Beautiful show. And necessary, to quickly introduce Port & Umi to the inventor
Well he is a lighthouse keeper. Makes sense why he wouldn't be upset about someone. Also a lot of small villages have a incredibly different culture than America and the "modern" world.
I'm glad that this pilot had finally drooped cause it was super charming! I adore the art style, it had some jokes that absolutely killed me, Jolly Roger is the best character and I applaud the subversions that was done (along with the nice bit of foreshadowing over what moon shards do). The lore is also super interesting and I'm curios to know how Port and Uma broke the moon exactly. I'm excited to see more of this show!
It definitely could use some cue adjustments, the story telling could be a bit more refined cause I had a hard time following the characters logic, but I think overall those are things that can easily be fixed while funding starts. You guys have done a phenomenal job animating this. The music and voice acting is great and so far the best character seems to be the grave digger. He had the best lines and best intro. Old gods, shattered moon and a mysterious character voiced by Shannon McCormick? Can't help but notice the RWBY parallels and I'm loving it
Like fr there is no way he Isn't related to it all at a deeper level
I recognized Shannon McCormick and Elizabeth Maxwell's voices immediately! I hope to see more from this animation team 🙏
I might be wrong but I believe he created Nomad of Nowhere over at Rooster Teeth, or at least sold the idea to them
@ventura7886 i mean, he's been Washington for 15 years
@@zavtparticles I meant the channel owner, should of been more specific
I loved the inclusion of sign language! I'm trying to learn it as someone with auditory processing issues, some degree of selective mutism and a hard of hearing mother and seeing it used made me real happy.
why are deaf people always portrayed as mute? I've seen multiple people who were deaf from birth who can talk
same
thats because of speech therapy, seeing how this is a small town she probably got no help with speech so they didnt talk. @@narcosis1507
@narcosis1507 Because it is hard for deaf people to learn to speak if they can't hear their own voice. It's possible, but very challenging.

What the hell are you doing out here, Fred? 😂
I might be dumb, but how is it implied that the kids broke the moon? And how is Ankle implied to be the Ocean titan?
@@stefperb9531 1:02 the kids are shown in a picture of the moon breaking
5:49 kids look suddenly guilty when "the shatter" is mentioned
11:05 "we owe it to these people to help after what we did"
Not explicitly stated but it does make sense that they somehow caused it. It would explain why the kids are collecting the shards and somehow have a moon shard compass.
12:08 Ankle "knows everything about Bonnie" (which turns out to be moon shard related) and he's briefly shown to have suspicious tassels and a magical/evil sounding voice. We never actually see ankle (except his hair) but his form (especially the tassels) is similar to the 4th titan (Tiamat) shown at 0:21
His entire graveyard scene and 16:26 gives off the impression that he's much more powerful than he's letting on

This is honestly cartoon network style animation. It's done so well. The style, the characters the story. I can't wait to see more

@@Moe_Posting_Chad valid option, but I'm taking about indie animation as a whole. Also I'm not a guy lol

And that ending song is FANTASTIC!

It looks like it uses a classic style at first but it has its own distinct stuff, it's just the beginning and the feeling that this is not a classic adventure of the day type of cartoon is already there
Why do you want more bland garbage? There is already tons of terrible formulaic nonsense. Are you a human being?

I ALMOST SCREAMED WHEN INTRODUCTION TO THE SNOW STARTED PLAYING I HOPE THIS SHOW TURNS OUT WELL
First episode and I already have a theory, if you look at 0:47 you can see that the shape of two of thw titan's horns eerily coincide with the shape of protagonists' hair.
