Doug, I believe the extra set of small tail lights on the outboard sides are required for meeting geometric visibility requirements for rear lamps in the US (can be met by area or by intensity - in this case the additional lights meet it by intensity). Since the tire is on the rear of the vehicle, it blocks a lot of the view (not meeting by area). But since the tail lights don’t bulge out of the rear end it wouldn’t meet the requirements. We make the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler tail lights and they both struggled with this requirement during the design phase. Hence why the Jeep and Ford tail lights bulge out so far.

I think the concept of "off roader" is different in the US. The wrangler is downright terrible for towing, and therefore is terrible for overlanding- what this is intended for. The wrangler would absolutely stomp it in technical terrain though. I'm actually in to it. It's as much as a wrangler and at least as big a mechanical peace of shit, but it probably rides well on the highway and it can tow 2500lbs safely.
grinchyface a wrangler is 20k cheaper? The base model defender is as much as a fully loaded wrangler rubicon which is a way more capable and luxurious vehicle.

I think they are in other markets, but because US regulations allow red turn signals, JLR went through the task of making US specific red turn signals because they're "more aesthetically pleasing"
They aren't even in the same consumer bracket. The Bronco is going to drive like a Wrangler on the highway (which is disgusting to say the least). The Defender is off road capable without sacrificing highway or daily driving comfort.
@@charlesdickerson1858 Well first off no one knows what the Bronco drives like because it hasn’t been released yet, but it certainly doesn’t drive like a Wrangler because it has independent front suspension. Who needs capability or reliability in an off-roader? It’s all about the ‘durable feeling’ interior
😂
I think the concept of "off roader" is different in the US. The wrangler is downright terrible for towing, and therefore is terrible for overlanding- what this is intended for. The wrangler would absolutely stomp it in technical terrain though. I'm actually in to it. It's as much as a wrangler and at least as big a mechanical peace of shit, but it probably rides well on the highway and it can tow 2500lbs safely.
grinchyface a wrangler is 20k cheaper? The base model defender is as much as a fully loaded wrangler rubicon which is a way more capable and luxurious vehicle.
grinchyface i live in the harshest climate in the world bro. Were the 80% of the cars are from japan mostly land cruisers and patrols (y61) rule the roads. Wranglers are doing pretty good. Jeep sales are increasing so we will see. As far as land rover goes 🤢🤢🤮🤮
Lift a lexus GX that is all

If doug was walter jr in bb
Impressive how quiet the interior is....ZERO wind noise...Doug: You are so cheap with the scores: The styling and the cool factor are both 10.
Is it just me but the new land rover looks like the mini clubman on sterroids
The back of this car reminds of the older mini cooper clubmans. i can't unsee it
So true! lol
It's horrific I don't know what they were thinking
I think it looks like a Ford flex with a lift kit
Doug reviews the RX-8 : it's ugly
also Doug about the Defender style : i love it!
Ngl they both ugly 😔
RX8 isn't that ugly and the LR isn't supposed to be pretty so...
I think old defenders are charming and endearing. This is just... Sigh... New Land Rover Stuff.
My first thought was that thisss is a Land Rover on RX-8 wheels.
@Jonathan Losito dont you ever disrespect Flex like that again😤
I have to say .Dougs reviews are very informative and his enthusiastic manner of speaking is rather entertaining. He is also very knowledgeable. Before I purchase my next vehicle, I’m going to see if Doug has a review on it.
the way he speaks is everything i feel like nobody knows this

IMO, the small ones should be amber/orange and used as the turnsignal.
I think they are in other markets, but because US regulations allow red turn signals, JLR went through the task of making US specific red turn signals because they're "more aesthetically pleasing"
US regulations you have to have a certain amount of surface area
. Those are too small.
Eric In SF the clear part is the indicator on the UK cars and then I’d assume the red parts surrounding the indicators are the rear fog lights
Amber light shines through red lenses as amber, also the inside of the smaller lights is clear, which would allow to shine amber with little hassle.
it's amber, US is a weird bunch for allowing red as turn signal
I'll be really interested to see the review of the Ford Bronco in comparison to this...
I don’t think either vehicle will be particularly reliable, but the Defender will be very expensive to fix, especially that air suspension which is not great for cold climates.
Bronco? That's a domestic brand not a global brand like Land Rover 😂
@@theancientsancients1769 Land Rover is owned by Tata Motors. An Indian company, they have no prestige.

Hottest SUV of the year?? Doug, come on. If that’s hot, my Kia Soul is SMOKING.
That new Honda Element looks pretty sweet!
What a funny, *totally not overused* joke!
First thing I thought
Looks like a really big Kia Soul
Yup my thoughts exactly 😂
But also much better looking
Is it just me or did this model look old in the thumbnail to you??
Or a stretched Jeep Patriot 😂
Mmmm 🧐 Who are u guys 😂 ? Surly 0% knowledge about cars or atleast this car !
I enjoy watching Doug's reviews, always honest and to the point and informative.
"Eh, 5 seconds, it's adequate"
This guy losing track of how fast cars accelerate
Well, when half the cars you review are super cars with over 600 hp, average isn’t so average
I think he means it’s adequate for an SUV
@@bderkhan2925 5 second 0-60 for a non-performance orientated SUV (makes me feel a bit ill saying that) is ridiculously fast.
@Fa Ab if a 5.0 is doing it in 3.9 seconds it's got pp2 im sure
in a land rover he says adequate.. Any other car he would say "it's underpowered".
I’m Rover DeMuro and I’m here to review the new Land Doug Defender
😂
Perfection

Your first!
How do you have 50 likes in a minute?
Looks awesome. I think I’ll wait 2 years and buy one for like 5,000
Remember the extended warranty
@@richardbutton1179 how many miles does that warranty cover? We'll see how many of them are to and from the shop. I'll wait and see. Allowing my fellow citizens to appreciate the joy of depreciation is my approach to any vehicle of this marque.
Thats if you will be willomg also purchase a new engine and transmisson
Brian Leslie You can ! The extended warranty means they have been working on reliability.......
😂
2021, Hoovies Garage:
I bought the CHEAPEST Land Rover Defender in the USA!
Love that they brought back the safari window. I loved the ones on my dad’s discovery when I was a kid.
We call those an alpine window. Not come across safari window before. I keep looking fo an old discovery. Always wanted one. 👍
Defenders always had them...what do you mean by "brought back" then?
It's a lifted Honda Element!
Without the Honda reliability
A "6" for quality...it's a Land Rover, Doug...a...Laaannd...Rover! A 4 would be generous!
He’s not basing his score off previous notions...
I have always thought that Land Rover is a great durable and reliable brand.
I’ve got a 2012 LR4. Very reliable and well built. What model do you have Phillip?
@@Jarvisdell It's not. It used to be though, i would go for 90's land rovers.
Jarvis dell Even though Doug is massively excited about this SUV, the truly sad state of affairs is Tata-owner of JLR-is the largest maker of electromechanical 💩in the world. JD Power and other databases list Land Rover lowest in quality, reliability, dependability, and frequency of repair in the world. (Jaguar is third from last.) Anyone buying or leasing their vehicles should be prepared to drive dealership loaner cars for multiple days multiple times each year.
whos here after he bought himself a NEW LAND ROVER DEFENDER!!!!!!!
me! lol
Give me back the old model Defender
I wish, I saw one today I drooled
I wanted to see the center console 😆

"Completely re-imagined" Defender looks suspiciously like an LR3.
Its more Discovery than Defender for sure. Even in adverts reminds me first Gen of Discovery. New opening for Defender, new face.
@@jakubstrumillo total fail imo. Same thing they did with the Discovery.. looks terrible.
good thing i like LR3s. In my opinion. This is a discovery with defender styling.
@@MalrusOSC Defender with Discovery styling*
Looks more like a new Discovery, too soft lux looking for a Defender
I love the new Honda Element, not sure why he kept saying Land Rover though.
Yes. the new Element looks to impress. I have two of them "vintage" Honda toasters, wouldn't mind another....and quicker.
Kyle Moon How Dare You!? *greta
lol yes
How many times did he say off road but never took it off road. Need to find a non-mall cruising review.
This makes be want to buy another Element.
Looks like a taller, lifted Ford Flex.
@C F 2 your ford is a pos, this is better than a g wagon
It's literally a bronco with a body kit. Wtf
Ford does own this company....
@@Tainoblazed ford hasn't owned land rover for years
Ford Flex combined with a Honda Element.
This car has has changed from hardcore off-roader to just another family suv.
Third row: * exists *
Legroom: * doesn’t *
Sad to say that’s just how it works with third rows. Third row seats are typically used for small children and not full sized adults.
Legless people: Yes a place for me.
@@kingjlinza * *BMW X7 has joined the chat* *
The old Defender didn't have legroom in the second or first rows, either.
Doug the kind of guy to call Land Rover “reliable”
People have different meanings of "reliable".
The Defender is actually very reliable. It’s a work horse and conquered a lot of the world. I can’t say the same for the US spec one though.
it's reliable, but the parts are expensive, just like old Mercedes.
@@ultraguy8771 RR are universally considered unreliable especially the electronics.
@@Ben_Mayall
The really old and simple ones where there is nothing to break.
But even those are not great when compared to contemporary Land Crusiers and the like (talking 60s to early 80s models), however better than the occasional Soviet model (UAZ and old Ladas) and certainly more reliable than newer ... anything, with the exeption being rust.
One thing that really stands out to me is how freaking easy even newer (up to early 2000s?) Land Rover Defenders can be stolen. Literally with a wire coat hanger like in the movies. That's a pretty big problem with how much they are worth these days.
Finally! A Honda Element that can traverse shallow bodies of water!
That's exactly what I was thinking! Even the dashboard shifter is the same. Element probably way more reliable. Wait.. no... DEFINITELY more reliable.
They really blatantly ripped off the Element and acted like it’s okay. And the crazy thing is people will buy it
@@ZenEndurance An element is a 200k miles vehicle with just oil changes.
I thought the same. It is almost as much of a disgrace to call this a Defender as it is to call the E SUV a Mustang. What a letdown!!!!!
William Peets which features of the Element did they "blatantly rip off?" It doesn't have the Element's very distinctive door layout....or seat design.....or tailgate. Is any boxy SUV with a weather resistant interior a blatant Element ripoff?
The exterior simplicity is genius
I'm constantly accidentally releasing my hood while driving down the road. Thank goodness Land Rover has solved this quandary for me.
Glad I'm not the only one!
It's part of the required lock-out on any hood. Yours just has a separate hood latch.
It’s actually for security, you can’t break the window and immediately get into the engine bay.
Get a room already! 😆 This man is in love with this car
Part of me thinks that Doug's secret new car is actually the new Defender but I guess we'll see 😂
glya Same! I’m with you on that one
I like it! I got sloppy seconds.

I thought they were 2006 Toyota Rav 4 wheels lol
Velar, Defender and Rangie all scoring high on quality - more like avoiding the serious reliability issues

Imagine how much it will cost to fix that air suspension when it breaks

Doug, "household style electrical outlet" for "plug-in my toaster" clearly says 180W. What kind of toasters are on sale in San Diego?
Very alow ones.
Doug de Muro is the type of guy who buys a new Defender in order to have breakfast outdoors
Super safe pansy California approved toasters.
If Doug's definition of toast is mildly hot bread, 180W seems appropriate
Since you know so much about wattages... What can you run with 180W?
Plot twist- Dougs “new” car is actually the new defender. (Hopefully)
Hopefully not. Unreliable pieces of junk. Doug has been there, done that.
