    It the same at Gloucester canal with gudgeon….the zander have eaten them all! When I was a kid that’s all you’d catch on the river seven and Gloucester canal. I don’t fish anymore but watch a lot of TH-cam videos on Gloucester canal and the number of fish and virility ain’t nothing like it was. Yet the zander fishing is great. Shame really how is changed. Anyway love watching your videos hope your health gets better soon….

    • @JonArthur

    S-76 (helicopter) DV-40 (small plane. yeah, I'm a geek), and a roach the wants to be a grass carp. Quite a different outing !!! As for the crays, if we land any in our local canal, we're not allowed to put them back alive. I don't know if you remember, but back in the 90s there was a bunch of loons that released a lot of mink in Hampshire. Well that was a bout 15 miles from where several of us would regularly see them in the Basingstoke canal. They were quite small, but really savage, we'd find 4/5 lb bream dragged on to the bank with only a mouth full eaten, sure cray fish were left half eaten along about a 2 mile stretch. Very cute, but no one get close enough to found out the hard way about looks being deceiving. I was on the buses back then, and rumours started to filter through about a farmer near where the mink were released had his jack russel set about and killed by 2 mink, they were all trapped and dealt with properly. I only mention that because you spoke about otters being close by. Anyway, I'm chatting away and wasting your time. You take care Jon. TTFN

    • @JonArthur
      @JonArthur  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Graham. I fished a National on the Basy where they were crawling up our keepnets! They'll sadly never go from the Thames and Cherwell now theyre here and no ones checking them. :-(

  • @jeffchandler7662
    @jeffchandler7662 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Mornin Jon, as said earlier the helicopter is a S76 it’ll be JCBs ( tractors etc!!) the DA 40 was the small one, and the third one sounded like a Seneca !! Geeky I know but I do work up at the airport !! And that is a bit of a walk to that swim !! I think the Cherwell has gone down hill massively over the last decade or so Jon, used to be a cracking river around the kidlington area. Great vid mate. Keep em coming.

    • @JonArthur
      @JonArthur  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow and I thought I was an anorak recognising hooks and floats from 100 miles ha ha! Appreciate the knowledge and you are correct its no short walk but it's been drawing me back a lot so its nice to draw a line under it and try a bit further along... Agree the Cherwell is a shadow of itself. So sad the house owner has put no fishing signs up everywhere and otters are a big issue, but I am sure the water coming in from the quarry opposite is not good for the river. If you look on the EA website it is officially classed as a poor environment and low fish stocks in this area. Shame no one will probably ever get to the bottom of it as above the surface it looks amazing... :-(

    • @jeffchandler7662
      @jeffchandler7662 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true Jon,it is a good looking river but some of the kidlington matches held further downstream are showing no weights as such and more blanks than a starting pistol !! Trying that little pound on the canal below the lock and where you go into that field ………… hoping some fish have gone in there from the river to get out of the flow !!! …………. Tight lines mate.

    I think every aspiring angler has his or her own river that they'd like to keep a secret from everyone else.. Mine is the river Penk, between South Stafford and Penkridge. Roach to 2lb, Chub to 8lb, Barbel to 14lb, Carp to 35lb, Pike to 28lb (that I know of). Perch, Dace, Gudgeon, Ruffe.. No Zander or Grayling but occasionally Rainbow & Brown Trout to 6lb. My biggest Bream from this river is only 9lb but no-one is perfect😃

  • @PatrickJHNewman
    @PatrickJHNewman ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I haven't tried it myself, but one suggestion I've heard is to pierce a tin of pet food then lower it into the water on a length of cord away from where you are trying to catch, to lure all the crayfish away from your catching area. Anyway, take it easy and get well soon.

    • @JonArthur

    Fished that stretch over 25 years ago it’s a shadow of its former self I caught bream over 4lb tench over 5 Chubb to 4lb 12 lots of roach I had a brace of mirror carp one afternoon 12 and 14lb they used to live in the lily pads up by the footbridge.I also saw some massive pike as well although the biggest I caught went 14lb. I live a 5 minute drive from that stretch and used to fish short evening sessions .It makes me sad to see how much the Cherwell has declined , otters pollution crayfish all take their toll.

    Shoals of gonk above Banbury, it sure drives You insane though that river, feast or famine with no apparent difference, tried paste fishing where it hardly moves, You can guess the outcome of that with our friends the crays

    • @JonArthur
      @JonArthur  ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? Whereabouts above Banbury and when did you last catch them? Used to catch literally hundreds in the Heyford/Somerton area but you don't see any at all now... Same on the GUC around Southam/Leamington.

    • @kevinbennington887
      @kevinbennington887 ปีที่แล้ว

      I live in Cropredy, caught some last week, I tend to fish too heavy for them though, they are more evident in the Cherwell than the canal, but plenty in the canal, it is not the zander that is their problem it is our friends the crays.
      This rain presently will help the river, it has been very low.@@JonArthur
