From what I have seen over numerous videos, Jen has to be one of the best and most fun partners, doing anything, including what you two are doing, that I could imagine.
Happy Birthday Taters! Not fun being sick on your birthday and definitely not fun hiking under the weather. . You are on strong lady to hike 26+ miles on top of that!
No access to a bathroom isn’t bad *if* you have access to woods. Walking through farms and such with both of us having stomach troubles has been…stressful
Happy Birthday, JennnnnTaters! 🎊🥳🎉🍺🎂🌎🌍🌏🏔️🥾🌳🏜️. I hope you continue to feel better. You keep pushing along but not feeling well and you an amazing person. Matt….oh that guy😂. You are amazing too Matt!
Happy Birthday 🎂 Young One!!! ⚗️🧬🕶️🥼🪠🧻 May all your dreams come true Take care you two ,sounds like that part of America we'd hope wasn't on the trail. Your a good protector Matt
Not often ,but when I have needed Imodium, (long hikes, multi-day races, dark corners of the Earth) I've never hesitated to use it. Better bowels through chemistry!
Happy belated Birthday! Taters I could tell you were not feeling it by the way you were moving your arms while hiking. They normally have a nice rhythmic swing but in this video they were a bit subdued. I guess you are back home by now preparing for your students so we will be missing your smile and laughter. 😎✌
Happy birthday, it seems like it would be easy for local volunteers to stock water caches in the more remote sections of this so called trail, I noticed that in Utah they do have them in the extremely desolate areas.
There really isn’t enough traffic along this trail to warrant that sort of thing. And as always most of the few people that do start this trail won’t make it this far
You could have popped down to Las Animas and back up to 194, only a mile each way. The Turn By Turn does mention the Kit Carson museum in Las Animas - surely a must see 8-)
We talked about that but that’s a pretty big out and back when there are likely to be other options. I’d even offered to go in to stay at the hotel there to give her a chance to rest
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes Yes, I knew that would be the case. I was mostly looking at the map to see if there is any alternative to 194 which looks dangerous with no shoulder, but there really aren't any. I wonder if 50 would actually be better if it has more of a shoulder?
50 does generally have more of a shoulder. We took it out of Fowler because of that. But it’s a really unpleasantly busy road with a lot of trucks. Sometimes it’s 6 of one, half dozen of another
Happy Birthday Jen! Hopefully your next birthday will provide better scenery and better health on your journey with Matt next year. The Yukon right? -Geo
Tarantula wasps are so cool. I love teaching my students how they paralyze the spiders with their venom, then drag them back to a burrow and lay their eggs on the poor spiders. When the eggs hatch, they have fresh food right there to eat. Isn't nature beautiful?
Huge difference. My normal carry out here has been a gallon occasionally 5 liters. Back in Maryland usually 2.5 L since it wasn’t nearly as hot or dry. Also water sources are a lot harder to come by
Jen's half-star review for Kansas didn't leave much room at the bottom for her eastern Colorado rating. I'm anxious to hear her thoughts as she leaves the trail for California.
Serious endurance undertakings very often result in intestinal distress, often even before muscles and joints start talking back.....would love to know the physiology of what causes that.
A couple of questions...you wear it looks like a sun hoodie and shorts. You don't find the sun hoodie hot in Kansas and Colorado heat? And jen, appears to wear long pants and a hoodie, don't you all over heat?
Sun hoodies are made of thin whicking material and made to be worn in the heat. They can get overwhelmed obviously like when the humidity has been high but in general we find them preferable to skin cancer
People are such inconsiderate POS's. They probably would have got woke up by me somehow on my way out of there. But being on foot, I get that might not be as good an idea. Sounds like it was a good thing that ditch, and trees were there 😀
@@richardhill6125 Do you live there in La Junta? always have wanted to go back. we only stayed overnight and walked around the areas for just a few hours. is there still a room with all the eagle scouts from there and some even never came back from war
Any idea why you keep running into abandonned houses? The fields are still cultivated. These were big places too, there must have been a downturn at some point?
I have talked to locals about it and in some cases it is just an aging population and people moving away. Also as larger families pass away they end up with multiple properties and it’s not really worth it to sell because the value of the land isnt that high.
I live in a similar type of rural area. The way it usually works here is the family uses the house until it starts to crumble. Then it ends up being cheaper to put a mobile home next to the old house and move into that. Sometimes you see properties with a succession of increasingly old/decrepit mobile homes + the original house.
The farms are bought up and the owners don't want to mess with turning the house into a rental. Eventually they just tear them down and use the land to farm. In Ohio, it can be really expensive if a new well or septic system is needed. Not worth doing.
Normally wouldn’t stick around a channel that deletes comments…. i.e. a somewhat critical comment about passing up a free flowing river as a water source and me quoting Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt as his go to phrase of “Any Port in a Storm”. My suggestion of not being afraid of flowing river water apparently ticked someone off. Not my intentions at all.
Almost always if comments are deleted it’s TH-cam doing it automatically. Happens even to mine sometimes. As far as using surface water I don’t have a filter that can handle the pesticides and such found in this area. We’d use it if it was an emergency obviously but there are a lot of other steps we could take before that. Once I’m back to the mountains then I can start filtering again
My experience in Eastern Colorado, outside of the towns themselves, is most "residences" are not something you would actually want to walk up to. Might not live through it between dogs and guns.
Those damn deer flies are the scourge....they stick to you, bite hard, and are basically resistent to any repellent ever made. They can make you lose your mind.
Wow, 26.6 miles and not feeling good! Tater's is a keeper! Happy birthday Taters! ♥
From what I have seen over numerous videos, Jen has to be one of the best and most fun partners, doing anything, including what you two are doing, that I could imagine.
Quite possibly. Except maybe for the activities of carrying heavy things or enjoying nachos
Awe thanks 😊
Happy Birthday Taters! Not fun being sick on your birthday and definitely not fun hiking under the weather. . You are on strong lady to hike 26+ miles on top of that!
Hello! I’m really enjoying your videos. I’m in Wichita, KS. I’m sorry Kansas was so tough. You both are amazing. Thanks for posting these videos.😊
I cant even imagine having tummy troubles without access to a bathroom and laundry. Jen's a beast.
No access to a bathroom isn’t bad *if* you have access to woods. Walking through farms and such with both of us having stomach troubles has been…stressful
What a sad birthday but then again you'll never forget it. Happy birthday, Jen!
LOL… anger squats. I caught that reference.
Happy Birthday! 🎉 It is about that time of year when the tarantulas are migrating! You might get lucky and see a herd or two! Have fun!
Hey Y'all. Happy Birthday Ms. Taters! Hope you feel better overnight. Go easy on her Matt.
Thanks, happy birthday taters enjoy. ✌🏻👊🏼
Almost 27 miles while having stomach troubles...I hope you start feeling better real soon. Happy belated birthday!

Ah, Matt, I hear the wistfulness in your sarcasm when you talk about Jen heading back for the school year
Happy Birthday Taters!!! You guys are awesome!!
Happy belated birthday to Jen! Too bad no "attack" corgis to cheer her up on the actual day. Stay safe!

Happy Birthday Jen.
Happy birthday, August is a nice month for being born and enjoy life.
Toughing it out indeed! True grit (the reality show, not the movies!) Hang in there guys and Hike On! Tortoise

World traveller here, Pink Bismuth is a lifesaver. Calms the tummy, slows down the guts.
First? Love your videos! Happy Birthday Jen! (Though I guess this is a day late!)

Also how much water do you use in a typical day now vs Maryland?
Huge difference. My normal carry out here has been a gallon occasionally 5 liters. Back in Maryland usually 2.5 L since it wasn’t nearly as hot or dry. Also water sources are a lot harder to come by
Love the corn when I'm cycling and need a windbreak. Hate it when it's already humid and the "corn sweat" makes it even worse.
happy bday
Happy belated birthday to Jen, even if by the time you guys read this she will be back in California. Imodium is definitely a trip saver when needed.

Not sure I think those were Horse flies biting you ?
Likely Deer Flies. They are blood suckers and their bites are painful. Horse Flies are a bit larger.
I am usually too furious at them to bother figuring out what the actual species I’m trying to murder is
Can't wait to LA JUNTA again. stayed at the KOSHARE KIVA on the way to PHILMONT
Hello from La Junta. The Kiva is definitely worth a look!

Tarantula Wasp
Day 127. Hiking with 55 pounds (elk hunting training). Feel the misery Matt and Jen.
Colorado is a beautiful state, but eastern Colorado is no fun to drive through, much less walk through.
