Bloodborne - Would Trick Weapons & Firearms Work In Real Life

  • I am a big fan of Bloodborne. It was the first From Software game that I played and the Victorian/Gothic/Lovecraftian horror vibe was perfect.
    But the weapons? While fitting in the game, could they work in real life?
    amygdalan arm beast claw beasthunter saif beast cutter blade of mercy bloodletter boom hammer burial blade chikage church pick holy moonlight sword hunter axe Kirk Hammett Ludwig's holy blade rakuyo reiterpallasch rifle spear saw cleaver saw spear Simon's bowblade stake driver tonitrus whirligig saw cannon church Cannon Evelyn fist of gratia flamesprayer Gatling gun hunter torch
    Bloodborne is a 2015 action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. Bloodborne follows the player's character, a Hunter, through the decrepit Gothic, Victorian-era-inspired city of Yharnam, whose inhabitants are afflicted with a blood-borne disease. Attempting to find the source of the plague, the player's character unravels the city's mysteries while fighting beasts and cosmic beings.
    The game is played from a third-person perspective. Players control a customizable protagonist, and the gameplay is focused on strategic weapons-based combat and exploration. Players battle varied enemies while using items such as swords and firearms, exploring different locations, interacting with non-player characters, and unravelling the city's mysteries. Bloodborne began development in 2012 under the working title of Project Beast. Bearing many similarities to the Souls series of games by the same developer and director, Bloodborne was inspired by the literary works of authors H. P. Lovecraft and Bram Stoker and the architectural design of real-world locations in countries such as Romania, the Czech Republic and Scotland.
    Bloodborne was released in March 2015 and received critical acclaim, with praise directed at its gameplay, particularly its high difficulty level, atmosphere, sound design, Lovecraftian themes, and interconnected world design. Some criticism was directed at its technical performance at launch, which was improved with post-release updates. An expansion adding additional content, The Old Hunters, was released in November 2015. By the end of 2015, the game had sold over two million copies worldwide. Bloodborne won several awards and has been cited as one of the greatest video games ever made. Some related media and adaptations have also been released, including a card game, board game and comic book series.
    Bloodborne takes place in Yharnam, a decrepit Gothic city known for its medical advances around the practice of blood ministration. Over the years, many travellers journey to the city seeking the remedy to cure their afflictions; the player's character journeys to Yharnam seeking the cure, something known as Paleblood, for an unspecified illness. However, upon arriving in the city, it is discovered that Yharnam is plagued with an endemic illness that has transformed most of its citizens into bestial creatures. The player must navigate the streets of Yharnam during the night of The Hunt and overcome its violently deranged inhabitants and horrifying monsters to stop the source of the plague and escape the Nightmare. Long ago, the residents of Yharnam began worshipping ancient, eldritch cosmic beings known as the Great Ones after scholars from the College of Byrgenwerth discovered something referred to as a "medium" in the ruins of an ancient, highly advanced civilization, on top of which Yharnam was built. The Great Ones provided the healing blood Yharnam was famous for, which is also the source of the plague.
    The player character, a Hunter, is being operated on by an old man, who explains that he is performing a blood transfusion to allow them to sign a "contract", mentioning a mysterious condition referred to as Paleblood. He warns the Hunter that they will go on a strange journey that may seem like a bad dream. The Hunter blacks out and awakens as a large, flesh-torn beast rises from the floor and menaces them. A sudden fire forces the beast's retreat, and then little creatures ("Messengers") crawl over the Hunter as they black out again. After the player completes character creation, the Hunter awakens on an operating table in a different clinic in Yharnam.
    The Hunter finds their first lantern, which when lit transports them to a spectral realm called the Hunter's Dream, where they encounter Gehrman, an elderly wheelchair-using man who provides advice, and the Doll, a living doll who assists the player in leveling up. Gehrman explains that to obtain the blood they seek and escape the dream, they must hunt down the beasts raging through Yharnam and halt the source of the plague.

    The bit I like from the wooden shield description is "shields engender passivity" which is just such a burn at everyone that just circled around with their shield up backstab fishing in DS1 XD It's also good advice for former DS players in general, Dark Souls encourages you to take your time and wait for openings, Bloodborne still has some of that but it favours a more aggressive constant attacking style.

    Funny thing about the Amygdala name, in the Japanese translation, the name of the boss is Amandoze, which correlates with the English word for almond, and when the localisation team were working on translating the name of the boss, they didn't want to call it an almond because who would be threatened by an almond? So they used the Greek work for almond, Amygdala, which became poetic since the amygdala is the part of the brain that controls fear. Just a fun coincidence.
    Edit: forgot to mention: the Amygdala in the brain is called the Amygdala because it is shaped like an almond. So yeah.

    The trick weapons in Bloodbourne were created with a dual-purpose in mind. Most of these weapons in lore, were created to defend against the ongoing beast curse outbreak, and the angry mobs lobbying for blood from the churches. Thus, the churches created weapons that can combat both MEN and BEAST. Hence, the usual dramatic shift in size and/or function. Take for example, Ludwig's Holy Blade. A simple sword meant for man at first, however, when sheathed it become a great sword capable of taking down things MUCH larger in size. The weapon even hints at it in the description. Something like "the greatsword was for taking down foes of a inhuman size".

  • @Unit-3D
    @Unit-3D 2 ปีที่แล้ว +73

    The Ludwig's Holy Blade actually does Blunt damage in its Tricked form aside from its thrusting Heavy Attack, so it's basically a stylized version of the idea you brought up a minute earlier of a sword with a tetsubo sheath.
    Why does it exist, then, if it's functionally the same as the Kirkhammer aside from still having a Thrust damage attack in its two-handed form? Well, the Kirkhammer is a dedicated Strength-scaling weapon, while the LHB is the best "Quality" weapon in the game going by raw scaling, and also one of the best Arcane-scaling weapons in the game, if you want to stick elemental damage gems on it. I defer to your expertise here, but I think that kinda tracks with their design, with the concentrated mass of the Kirkhammer needing more heave to get moving, while the more evenly distributed weight of the LBH benefiting from more skillful application.
    Also, while the Stake Driver can readily be compared to a katar or pata, I think its charged attack specifically draws more from the idea of a captive bolt gun used to humanely slaughter animals, which is kind of a stroke of thematic genius. It's a little hard to tell exactly how it's being employed under the fire and smoke, but simply pressing or punching it against a target and then firing the charge would probably be more effective than firing it as part of a thrusting attack.

    • @cruesteanmonarch7032
      @cruesteanmonarch7032 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Usually the part of a whip that does the most damage is closer to the end. Combat whips did infact exist, however they were usually shorter and had metal or thick knots on the end. If the cane was shorter and the blades were more of at the end only it'd be much more functional. Hope that helped.

    • @fly1ngG0PHER
      @fly1ngG0PHER 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I don’t think it would go all that fast unfortunately; whip ends only move fast because they’re flexible elements that taper from thick at the hand to thin at the tip, amplifying slow motion of the hand to fast motion at the end, and having teeth would nullify that on its own. Threaded Cane looks equally thick all the way down, held together with braided steel wires, so it would handle much differently (plus, there is no way that you could make it a rigid cane afterwards without heavy or fragile locking features on each tooth and like a thousand pounds of tension keeping it from flopping on hit)

Also with the Kirkhammer, the hammer head is literally a stone tombstone that they used for symbolic purposes, which makes it even worse since it'd be heavier and more prone to breaking! And your idea for the bow blade being two smaller swords coming together is exactly how Super Smash Bros. designed the character Pit's weapon.

    I'd like to point out that most weapons in Bloodborne are designed for ripping and tearing flesh, as opposed to making clean cuts. Stuff like the Threaded Cane, for example, are designed to get embedded in your opponent's flesh and tear the affected area apart as they try to break free. The same goes for the cleaver-type weapons (or really any serrated weapon). You get one good hit in, and then watch them struggle to unbury the weapon from their flesh as they slowly bleed to death. Now, they don't work like that in-game because the game is too fast-paced for that kind of weapon to be portrayed accurately, but that's the lore reason for why a lot of weapons are designed so weirdly. And yeah, they may not work too great in a full-scale fight, but they're great for duels or skirmishes with smaller groups of enemies.
    And as for the hinges being a weak point, they're stated to be one of the most heavily-reinforced parts of the weapon. So it'll take a lot more than just a few sword swings or a mace to break them.

    • @gerald2508

    There actually is a way to create hardened blood. There was a plasticine precursor to bakelite called hemacite, which is a mixture of blood and a thickener (usually sawdust), then put under heat and pressure to create a kind of plastic. Allen Pan did a video on a blood sword, but his was huge. I'd love to see another attempt at hemacite blades.

    You adjust the weapon so the “cane” part slightly offsets at an angle all the way down and then separates with momentum to cut whatever’s in front of you
    How it retracts back into itself, fuck knows, but I thought I’d mention this at least

    It is worth mentioning in regards to your critique of the Rakuyo, being based in the idea that it is a rapier or primarily thrusting weapon, is that it's much more accurate to claim the larger blade as a katana or something very comparable to one. As it in lore shares a connection to the Chikage, a weapon that is very definitely a katana. This is seen in the first line of it's description: "A trick sword originated in the same country as the Cainhurst Chikage, only this sword feeds not off blood, but instead demands great dexterity."

    I think you could use the Bloodletter's transforming size to great benefit, it does use your own blood to transform-maybe it *could* use an enemy's in real world, so to say? But I can see it being used to stab through yourself to launch a surprise stab at an enemy, like how in game its transform attack is, if I remember right. But I can also see picking up an enemy, or their corpse, angling the thrust so that the head is aimed upwards, or vertically in some way, and letting the spiky mass drop. Or having a variant on a human shield, where you push your corpse as a shield with a huge spiky mass carving up the floor in front, and then just undo the transformation when you need manoeuvrability. Could do that in response to a cavalry charge, I think

They were for lightly armoured targets and were effectively steel whips. Elite warriors trained like Samurai and Gothic knights and were banned during British Rule due to like, social mobility and issues with ambush and as a symbol of a unified Non-European India. They are real weapons, but hard to use without hurting yourself without the proper training.

    I've got a steel replica of the Saw Cleaver, about 1:1 scale. Looks awesome, and when extended it feels like a slightly awkward cleaver or really short billhook/warscythe type thing. Useable, at least.
    Folded, though, with the saw blade as the striking edge, the change in balance makes it too hard to use. Not useless, just hard to use since all that weight is basically hanging in front of my hand. Major points for being scary, mind you.
    Of course, if it was made as a functional weapon instead of just an awesome steel replica (thinner and and actually sharp blade, oval grip instead of round, a sturdier and more reliable hinge lock), I can see it being a nasty and surprisingly useful weapon. In a realistic fantasy context, at least.
