    The best part about being a parent is to encourage and support your children! You have raised three amazing young men who will help to make this world a better place simply by being the kind, compassionate and energetic souls they are. Well done guys! We love following your adventures and are so proud of Declan, Ivan and Finn's individual accomplishments...and they're just getting started!

    Aluminium with stainless bolts and salt water - perfect combination! The bolts pulled out of my windlass last year. Had to re- drill a couple of mill larger and re-tap the threads for bigger bolts. Looks like Ivan enjoyed his trip. Bad luck for Finn, as he said that beach looked "interesting" for getting in and out of the boat from...

      Aluminium, stainless steel, salt water and electrical current! A design fault or feature?

    • @chrisr819
      @chrisr819 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@TheCruisingKiwisdid you measure stray current? That’s a standard issue on all older FP as the base is always standing in salt water. The stainless steel bolts create a battery. Mine was not as bad as yours. Jb weld putty is the right stuff to get an even base but you have to to drill the studs much deeper into the case as the epoxy won‘t hold that well, I added 4 additional. You must use Tefgel generously on the s s studs so it’s isolates them from the aluminum. Then using a 12mm nylon board cutting exactly to the shape of the windlass and that raises the windlass from its base so it’s not standing permanently in salt water. These measures solves the issue permanently.

      We were on the edge of our seat. I didn't include it in the vlog but Matt, the coxswain in this video had a terrible coastal rowing tour. In the long course champs he missed out on medals because 1, Finn lost his oar at the start of the double, then 2, when leading the mixed double with 400m to go and an official incorrectly called them out of the race to take a 1 minute penalty which turned out to be given to the wrong boat, their medal was not reinstated. You saw what happened in the beach sprint quad but also he and his mixed double partner contested the beach sprint mixed double and got knocked out by waves as they were leaving the beach at the start, they were the reigning world champs going into that event. That's racing for you.

    Hi, 40 years ago I had a similar problem with a VETUS windlass (actually a lofrans Italy product). It comes down to very low grade aluminum and with the dissimilar metal fastening and salt Cristal build up what you have is wat you get. I ended up rebuilding the housing in stainless steel and that fixed the issue. I am not sure what you can do there but I would recommend that you replace the windlass with a better brand at the earliest opportunity. Our temporary fix at the time was encapsulation with Fibre glass and now you can do that with epoxy and carbon. Good luck. Cheers Peter.

    In the 1980's I was on the same train, and when we broke the fog and I saw the mountains for the first time and I had the same reaction as Ivan... The photos I took were 35mm and I had the blow up into 2' x 2' pictures and framed them... I suggest visiting the little town go Mürren, Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. Spend the night at the Hotel Apline with amazing views of the Lauterbrunnen valley. 20 years later I took my wife back and we stayed in the same hotel and we did a bit if skiing....Take the tram to the top of the Schilthorn and have lunch at the revolving restaurant.. Ice caves on the other side of the valley as well as access to a glacier....

    Good one Finn. Almost but not quite. Back to you Rob.
    In a previous life, I used to own one of Mr Hartley ferrocement vessels. I had 3 zinc anodes. One on the prop shaft. One on the rudder. And one on the hull, connected directly to the engine. Replaced them every year. If the antifoul was good, then it was just a case of lift and hold. Never had any reactionary problems in the 10 or so years, I had that particular yacht. I thought I would need 4 anodes, but was advised by someone who knew what they were doing, that 3 was enough. The secret was placement of them to get maximum effect. Even at 78, I reckon I can learn something. What do you think caused your particular problem.?

    • @TheCruisingKiwis

    Sounds like you need a product called Mega Poxy PM as an all round epoxy for gluing metal, fibreglass, wood and just about anything. It might not be a permanent fix for your windless but it would definitely get you out of a tight situation it’s available in New Zealand and Australia. Been using it for 30 years now and can’t name the amount of uses I’ve used it for in construction to many to list. Electrolysis is the cause of the oxidation and oxidation is the symptom (Corrosion).

    Ok. I've never found out about what cruisers DO WITH all your used oil. Engine oil, transmission oil, gear box oil. PLUS used grease rags etc. I would hope you don't dump it but then putting it into garbage cans in remote places... WHERE will it wind up? Seems to me that burning it would result in the least hazardous method of disposal.
    And that's another thing about 2-cycle outboards. The reason they are banned or are being banned in many countries is because they are far more polluting. Yet I see cruisers buying 2-cycle outboards in places like Thailand. You can't get away from all polluting products but when such choices are made...
    Thanks for the video.

    • @TheCruisingKiwis
      @TheCruisingKiwis  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I can't speak for others, but we save the oil and hand it in at marinas that have a fuel dump area. Cruisers by two stroke engines because they are more reliable and easier to fix. Sailors balance that pollution by using sails to cross the globe.
