    Kayako is the scariest ghost for me. Sure there are objectively more threatening entities out there, but what makes her special is that there is no escape from her. The scares don't just happen in a scary place. You can go about your daily comfortable life feeling totally safe and she will be there, hunting for you. Waiting for an opportunity to grab you, which WILL come eventually. This inevitable, omnipresent sense of doom mixed with the mundane is what REALLY freaks me out about her.

    • @dontreadmyprofilepicture8817
      @dontreadmyprofilepicture8817 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Another thing is you can't even tell what's real when you have Kayako's curse, the longer you survive the more delusional you get and the safer you think you are the more danger you're actually in, she turns your comfort into ash in your mouth and it's no longer about surviving it's about anticipating death. Most ghosts usually try to solicit something from you, they want something so they haunt you until you're unhinged enough to give it up, Kayako just wants you to die.

    • @nitrokid
      @nitrokid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      People often compare her to her counterpart, Sadako from the Ring. Sadako will scare you dead, sure. But Kayako will visit you in your bed, even when you're not in Japan, snatch you to another dimension, rip your jaw off, and return you to the world of the living as a jawless revenant.
      That's a lot.

    • @joesama3282
      @joesama3282 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@nitrokid The thing is tho, Sadako is a Onryo(Spirit) that revolve her curse like a smallpox virus that normally give the human victims a heart attack and then died. In cases like if you happen to watch the videotape thus Sadako will allegedly choose you as her playtoy, she does things like what Kayako is doing until either you lucky enough to commit suicide yourself or driven to insanity no way to escape
      The movie Sadako however is different from the book, the movie Sadako are much much more powerful. One of her few powers is that she can get into your dream and burn all images from mind, and then inflict so much fear images that your real body dies but your dreams will keep going forever. She can also manipulate the weather to cause typhoon in japan, and also able to manipulate our DNA creating the offspring of ourselves for her own army to spread the virus. One unique thing about Kayako and Sadako was that unlike the regular onryo, they are able to create their own dimension to torture the souls instead of dragging you to afterlife. The latest movie Sadako had seem to be pushing towards the concept of becoming so powerful than any spirit killer, that she's turning into a cosmic horror. Sadako also absorbed Kayako's power in the end and fused it with Yuri, therefore her new abilities can literally cause apocalypse close to world end. This horror narrative of becoming overpowered broken seem to be getting trendy nowadays, we can see it in Shin Godzilla as well

    • @archamtracovich8783
      @archamtracovich8783 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joesama3282 welp I'd say that book Sadako is more powerfull as she can spread her virus-curse and reborn around the world and bring the world to apocalypse. Every cursed can sense her presence everywhere, Sadako can manipulate DNA and her curse can evolve like a virus and because of that Asakawa's family died even if they fulfill the conditions pf her curse. And because of her ressurection and spreading of her curse-virus the humanity in the future created virtual simulation for finding the cure of the curse

    • @joesama3282
      @joesama3282 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@archamtracovich8783 I think you got that mixed up or you read some latest version of the novel, because the powers you stated is within the movie Sadako. The original book Sadako revolve her power with smallpox, therefore she could not kill with her mind alone but had to fuse her abilities with a virus. Along the way there's the mixed between the movie and book Sadako's power ability. It was all said in the wiki and long time readers as well, just search for it

    Japanese horror has a few rules for their ghosts…
    One: you don’t “makes a deal” with the ghosts, they are a force of nature.
    Two: Every ghost has its rules and it’s triggers. For The Ring is the VHS. For The Grudge is the house. Kayako Will mercilessly go hunting everyone that enters the house…

    Some fun facts: The reason the boy meows is because he had such a strong connection to his pet cat in life that after his death he can only make that sound which is likely the last sound he heard as he died. As for the grudge sound itself that is called death rattle which occurs sometimes with people as they die & in this case the lady had her neck snapped but wasn't quite dead yet so that was the last sound she made & heard as she died. So just like her son it became the only sound she can make in death

    What made this movie and the original so scary for me is how the curse spreads. It starts in the house, then everyone and anyone that goes in is not only cursed to die but they also spread the curse to wherever they drop dead, where they live where they work, and even to their loved ones who in turn keep spreading the curse. If this curse was real, the world would end. And we don't know if destroying the original house stops the curse since it's never happened. I saw all the sequels years ago and one of them ends with Japan being a total deserted wasteland.

Whenever I felt any fear, was in the dark, going down a stairwell, walking through a long hallway, looking up into a closet, the dark corner of my room, you name it.. this was the thing I was scared of, this was the thing lurking. That noise haunted me for years afterwards lmao. I still rewatch this from time to time to assert dominance.

    The Grudge describes a curse that is born when someone dies in the grip of extreme rage or sorrow. The curse is an entity created where the person died. Those who encounter this supernatural force die, and the curse is reborn repeatedly, passing from victim to victim in an endless, growing chain of horror. So everyone that came in contact with the house or was related to a victim was now a target of the curse.

    23:20 random fact: in Japan they demolish buildings (mainly major cities like Tokyo) every 30-40 years when they made. Reason for it is as a country that goes through a lot of natural disasters they are always making new materials to better fend off against damage. Of course if you already live in it for long time they would ask you if it’s okay to relocate you and in return reimburse when they demolish the house or if for whatever reason if it has historical value you can get a form fo prevent it to be demolished. But if don’t agree to those they can’t do anything. They will ask again but can’t demolish it unless if one day the owners past away or move away the city immediately demolish it and build a new house with new material structure before put it up for sale.
    If look at current pictures or current Japanese media newer houses are more squarish since they design it where if one part gets damage from say earthquakes there is a company that comes with vehicles to remove that block out, put in a new block and connect it to the building to replace the damage instead of completely tear it down. Of course they inspect it to see if it’s worst then they thought on damage then they demolish the entire building and make a brand new one.
    If wondering “wait then wth doesn’t america do this for states that go through major floods, wildfires, quakes, tornadoes, etc?” Easy: not American. If not built by American company and materials or building looks American then no deal. There is a house in one of the southern states that perfectly fenced off the hurricane while it’s neighborhood was damaged. It’s more hut/dome shape and designed by a german(?) architect that study the area so the house can survive the hurricane if it comes by. It was pitch for new built houses to look like that hut house wifh materials not that pricey but was denied mainly ppl didn’t like the way it looked.
    So yeah looks and where it’s made/design by is more important then the safety of civilians living in it. Put that onto list of America’s infrastructure issues.

    One of the reasons why is this movie scares so effective, is because they put those scares in the daily encounter basis, you can't avoid shower, you can't avoid going to bed, you probably can't avoid taking an elevator. In the Japanese version there were some scenes not in the US remake which I think was super creepy and traumatized me for a very long time, there's a scene where the main character was having a casual coffee break with her friend at a cafe, and the girl felt something touches her leg, if was actually the black cat passing by, and when she decides to check what's under the table, she saw the boy sitting there looking at her in the eyes, that scene f me up so bad, makes me always feel uncomfortable putting my legs under table for a long time.
    And there's a scene the girl is sleeping, just like normal people, sometimes you wake up in the middle of the night, just when she open her eyes, she saw the boy standing right in front of her! and when she look up, she saw another face, the mother was standing at the head of the bed, bending down and staring at her!
    It's hard to describe those scene with words, but the Japanese one creepiness level is crazy high.
    Also, I think you guy actually should watch the remake in unrated version instead, it has more scenes that they deleted which is too heavy for a PG13 rating back then.

    This was the first horror movie I watched in full, I was in 4th grade and my siblings and I wanted to watch one of moms scary movies, 15 minutes into the movie and both of them have fallen asleep, I stayed awake for the whole movie, legit causing me to have a panic attack for the rest of the night and I didn't want to wake anyone up, so I put on 3 kids films till my mom woke up the next morning and I felt safe to sleep. Yeah, but now I love horror movies how ironic. lmao

    This movie scared me stupid. I'm going to listen to your review while I work, but I don't think I can watch it. Fun story, the building I work in has a tiny elevator that can only hold 2 or 3 people at a time and it's one of those old fashioned ones with the metal cage type door that closes, do you can see the whole elevator shaft as you ride it. Every floor has a window in the door so you can see in as you pass by it, just like that scene in this. I have thought of that scene literally every time I use that elevator and I used to be the last one to leave the building late most nights, after dark. Thanks to the rona I get to work from home full time now, thank god! I also still think of that shower scene more often than I want to admit when I'm in the shower, lol.

    Long story short if you enter the house you're cursed.
    The curse was caused by a husband finding out his wife had secret and obsessive feelings about another man, in the Japanese version it lead to him believing his son Toshio wasn't his, and he killed Kayako, Toshio and the cat who then came back to kill him creating a fun little nexus of hell in the house
    The American family that moved in were all cursed because they were all there at the showing of the house so bam that's them fucked, the investigator went to the house to avenge his comrades who went to investigate the house after kayako was murdered so he's also in trouble. It's like just looking at the house and you're done

    1:05 no we have
    The main universe
    Ju-on the curse 1 and 2
    Ju-on the grudge 1 and 2
    Spin offs
    Ju-on black ghost
    Ju-on white ghost
    Reboots
    Ju-on beginning of the end
    Ju-on final curse
    crossover
    Sadako vs kayako
    18:23 it said anyone who enters the curse please of origin will be cursed. And who ever came in contact with the person who is cursed will be cursed as well. Also destroying the house were the curse was created wont stop the curse.
    27:38 his name is toshio. And theirs a reason why he meows basically his soul and his cat merged together because they were so close.
    29:40 that's from ju-on the grudge
    29:57 it's from ju-on the grudge most of the scenes from this movie were from ju-on the curse and ju-on the grudge. Making this remake very unoriginal

One night, shortly after seeing this movie, I was all alone in the house, writing with a friend online, and I got booted off and find out that there’s a message on the answering machine when I go to reconnect. I shit you not, the message was two full minutes of a sound extremely similar to Kayako’s death rattle, I had to listen to the whole thing to be able to get back online.
    Turned out it was a pocket dial from my stepfather, and the sounds where the phone speaker rubbing against the inside of his pocket. but ye gods, no horror movie has ever scared me as much as this one did

    One of the main differences between this film and the original Japanese version is that there are no explanatory scenes in the original, where someone explains the ghost lore, since it would already be known by the intended audience. The scene where Karen finds all of the pictures where Kayako is stalking Peter is also not in the original, as it's setting her up as an obsessive stalker to explain why her ghost just keeps following everyone, when the Japanese version didn't need to give a reason for that. It's got really good scares and I like the way it's structured, but it's pretty thin on the actual story, whereas The Ring is very plot-focused and much more narratively satisfying. This one scares you a lot and then kind of just stops.

I'm not a jumpy person nor do I get scared while watching them, but it is nice to find people who actually enjoy them.
