This classic animated short - originally titled as 'Going Places' - is a Cold War-era propaganda film about the American entrepreneurial spirit. It was produced in 1948 by John Sutherland and sponsored by the Harding College. It is one of the "fun and facts about American business" series.
The cartoon attempts to defend and promote the principles of capitalism against other economic philosophies, especially Marxism. It defines the profit motive and dramatizes the part it has played in the economic development of America. It tells the story of how progress is achieved through hard work, research, competition, and fair trade. It has a rose-colored view of capitalism, where industrial development is always an improvement over what existed before, where savvy consumers are impossible to cheat, where profitable businesses always share the wealth with their employees, and where the free market always quickly thwarts any monopolistic attempts. Although this cartoon is a good example of capitalist propaganda which fails to explore or explain the downsides of capitalism, it readily admits that for capitalism to work, economy must continue to grow.
Plot:
The cartoon stars Freddie Fudsie, a lazy soap maker who just wants to go fishing. He invents bar soap, makes some money, and is about to retire in peace and quiet when the "Profit Motive," in the form of a beautiful young woman, captures his attention. Freddie, who suddenly needs more money to win her affection, never sees a fishing hole again. But that's okay, because "the profit motive has been the driving force behind the growth of American industry" and "will make a better life for the children of tomorrow." In order to raise the standard of living for his new wife and kids, Freddie uses his invention of bar soap to continue to grow his wealth. He step by step grows up to be the CEO of Fudso Soap, Inc., a thriving giant corporation, and learns about competition, monopoly and the evils of price fixing.
BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
In the late 1940s and early 1950s America, millions of theatergoers, students, and industrial workers saw one or more animated short films, shot in Technicolor and running eight to nine minutes, that were designed to build public support for the principles and practices of free enterprise. The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation quietly funded the production of this series of cartoons, titled Fun and Facts about American Business, through multiple grants to industrial animation house John Sutherland Productions via Harding College, an evangelical college in rural Arkansas that would become known nationally for its anti-communist and conservative political activism. (The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation was established in 1934 by Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., then-President and Chief Executive Officer of General Motors.)
Profit motive:
In economics, the profit motive is the motivation of firms that operate so as to maximize their profits. Mainstream microeconomic theory posits that the ultimate goal of a business is to make money. Stated differently, the reason for a business’s existence is to turn a profit. The profit motive is a key tenet of rational choice theory, or the theory that economic agents tend to pursue what is in their own best interests. Accordingly, businesses seek to benefit themselves and/or their shareholders by maximizing profits.
Theoretically, when an economy is fully competitive (i.e. has no market imperfections like externalities, monopolies, information or power imbalances etc.), the profit motive ensures that resources are being allocated efficiently. In other words, profits let companies know whether an item is worth producing. However, the market itself, should minimize profits as it is a cost to the value chain. Competition is the key tool by which markets overcome the individual firm's profit maximization incentive. The profit motive is a good of value to the economy. It is needed to provide incentive to generate efficiency and innovation.
The majority of criticisms against the profit motive center on the idea that profits should not supersede the needs of people. Another common criticism of the profit motive is that it is believed to encourage selfishness and greed. Critics of the profit motive contend that companies disregard morals or public safety in the pursuit of profits.

@Tsumuro The premise you are making seems to be that Capitalism, which brings prosperity and growth to humanity is wrong due to the costs of growth on the environment, that's kind a a messed up statement, specially considering you cannot fix everything with economy alone, people need to want to clean the environment, and what system of voluntary transactions and right to property encourages the mutual fulfilling of both parties involved in monetary transaction? Capitalism.
Capitalism is the reason we have made innovations towards renewable energy and taken superior technological steps towards protecting the environment. Even places like China and India, the greatest polluters with rising demand for environmental care have companies making ingenious working solutions to cleaning their rivers and the air, solar power is becoming cheaper as demand rises and is met with competition, more efficient and less pollutant batteries are being made by companies to store said power at far greater capacity and output, some day we will be extracting materials from asteroids, in the more immediate future in about 20 years we would have replaced oil as power source, we will have to work on synthesizing it for it's many other purposes for when we truly can't find any more still.
@Tsumuro I think those are two different issues, but atleast innovation will always be propelled forward aslong as Capitalism exists, it simply meets the needs and competes with innovation to fill those needs, if we don't care about our environment then Capitalism wont either, if we do they will as we have seen. Like I said Economy cannot fix everything, it's a matter of education I think to be honest, so we can make the right choices and vote with our dollars so to speak, Capitalism may be the best economy but to have the best possible society you need a virtuous people, can't really solve everything with Capitalism alone I think.
@Tsumuro Greed and selfishness are found everywhere, which is why every system in humanity has been exploited, this is not a Capitalism exclusive problem, nor even one that Capitalism even excels at, this is why we set regulations, because humans aren't perfect. The difference is that even with imperfect humans Capitalism has worked better than all other even more easily exploitable systems which have caused millions of deaths by being easily exploited, specially if said systems involve surrendering certain basic liberties. Changing Capitalism to another system won't get rid of these problems that actually have nothing to do with Capitalism.
About starting your own company and exploiting others to survive that's objectively not true, atleast not in the first world Capitalist countries, much less in the U.S. where holding down a job, graduating from high school and not having children out of wedlock is statistically proven to almost absolutely get you to middle class unless something terrible happens to you. Starting your own company is also not the only way to be successful.

This story ironically shows how incredibly meaningless the pursuit of wealth is: Fudsy wants an easier way of making soap for the sake of having more time to fish, but ends up having his whole life revolve around the accumulation of wealth without ever getting the chance to do so.
I mean it kind of simplifies the personal life aspect of it a lot but usually this kind of behavior includes going out now and then and meeting people. You can’t be a complete recluse like it’s depicted here.

Except once the two big corporations decide on price fixing, a small fry business would never be able to afford to sell their soap at a lower price. Imagine a startup trying to undercut Amazon. Itd either never get off the ground due to impossible overhead, or be bough instantaneously

@@sabin97 My preferred example of how the government ruins competition is septic tank installation. What does a guy need to sell and install a septic tank for a client? A shovel, a prefab septic tank and a wrench. What the government says he needs: a yearly training course. Registering an LLC for taxes and an address separate from his home. A business license, wherein your big business competition sits on the board, thousands upon thousands in insurance liability, environmental compliance training, health and unemployment insurance, certification in any machinery you are expected to use, insurance for that backhoe, a truck to transport said backhoe. A permit for EVERY installation. Inspections of your installation before and after which turns a 1 day job into a 3 day job.
A large business can eat these costs easily while the little guy trying to muscle his way into it gets crushed. Thanks to big government and big business tag teaming the guy.
And the moral of the story is that Fudsy only wanted to go fishing but his great idea grew into such a monstrosity that fed off of his greed that he spent his entire life chasing that Almighty dollar and never really did get to go fishing.... All that money and no happiness...

Poor dude, all he wanted was to hang out and do fun things with his time and he ends up wasting his life making soap, the one thing he wanted to escape so he could enjoy his free time. Now he's locked into a life time of unending responsibilities and liabilities when he could have just gone fishing and enjoyed his free time. The most depressing part is where he takes 10 years wasting his youth to make a slightly more marketable form of soap.

I love how these old propos give the whitewashed idealistic version of capitalism. The average person after WWII didn't understand anything more than the "American way" but didn't realize that corporations have always tried to skirt paying the taxes that build communities around them. When they're powerful enough they just buy the politicians that allow them to stifle new competition that would grow the economy, drive innovation, reduce costs and create newer jobs by forcing newer and costlyregulations while lobbying for subsides and recided taxes to that "they aren't forced to move to a cheaper zip code or country to stay competitive."

It varies with industry. There's industries where it's not possible for a bloke to start from nothing at the moment. Investing in something like a luxury cruiser requires that you can already put up capital and manage some risk.

Companies can't fix prices and get away with it without interference from the government, via special privileges (e.g. franchises, subsidies, regulations) or legislative actions forbidding the use and/or sale of goods and services from competitors. Without government assistance, it would be impossible for a would-be monopolist to set and maintain his prices and production policies independent of the rest of the economy. If he attempted to set his prices and production at a level that would yield profits to new entrants significantly above those available in other fields, competitors would be sure to invade his industry and he would be certain to go broke.

As long as the government meddles in economic affairs, companies can rise and fall due to government coercion rather than due to the law of supply and demand. History supports us both on this. The solution is more capitalism, not more socialism. Separate the state from economics, coercive monopolies disappear.

As for free market being self-regulating, yes it is, the problem is that a pure free market is just as unachievable as communism, though you can get far closer to that because "Free market" is actually a properly defined ideal unlike communism. I do agree some sort of interference to break up monopolies is necessary, as a system which does not centralise power is in short: impossible. But it's funny that you say that the self-regulation of free market is a complete and utter fiction when it has fared far better on the front of decentralisation of power, wealth and resources than any other system. The moment when socialist/communist systems were actually tried, they always devolved into monopolies of power, wealth and resources in the hand of the government.

Is that really the best or only way to motivate people to work for a high-quality benefit to society? Utter fear of poverty and death is the ONLY motive we can come up with?
It's not us, existence itself pushes that motive onto us even if we don't want it. The universe is actually quite hostile to our existence and things used to befar, far worse. The fact that we can enjoy any sort of free time today is a luxury provided by society.

Free markets offer a system where you are rewarded directly for what you produce. And therefore more production gets done, and everybody benefits.

If you look closely at the charts, production, wages, and living standards all rose hand-in-hand right up until about 1970. What happened around 1970?
First you had the expansion of the welfare state in the late '60s - and all its corresponding tax increases.
You also had the expansion of military industrial complex with Vietnam.
Finally, America (and correspondingly the rest of the world that uses the USD) went off the Gold Standard in 1971, freeing up Government to print as much money as they want, causing massive inflation.
Between all of these things, you get exactly what you just said. A decline in living standards while worker productivity continues to increase.

Inflation is not prices going up. Inflation is the value of every dollar going down.
It's like if you made a ruler with 15 inches, but it was still only a foot long. The only way that makes sense is if the inches are smaller.
With inflation, you have the same amount of goods and services, but more dollars circulating in the system. The end result is it takes more dollars to buy the same stuff.

@@LLMood But amazon works with many other companies to sell their products, they aren't the only store online, they just offer better costumer service and are better at it than others, they deserve the money they make. Google's success is entirely because people choose them over other search engines, again because they do it better, even if they put up with their political meddling, same thing with facebook, being successful and the best at something is not a bad thing. Apple also doesn't have monopoly in electronics, they get surpassed by other companies like Microsoft in almost every way sometimes, that's competition. There is nothing wrong with success, not that you suggest that, but the fact is that we had demands and they fulfilled them and the less people support small flexible innovative businesses the more they grow. And heck even then I compete with big businesses by doing delivery and doing installations with electronics at the moment for example, you'd have to wait for a week to get your xbox fixed with Microsoft, but I'll go to your house, meetup with you or you can come to my house and I'll even give you M&Ms while you wait if you have to at all.

Production went to China because of the profit motive funnily enough. It's a market with a large supply of available labour which is purchasable at a much lower cost.
That's why 80% of the US economy transitioned into a service-based economy, in which high-skilled or location-based jobs are the main drivers of job creation. An advanced economy shouldn't need to be slaving in a sweatshop to make money, the whole point of an economy is to offload physical labour to machines while human workers do more advanced or creative work.

@@mgabrysSF When I say "service economy" I'm not literally talking about customer service representatives. Remember, customer service representatives don't make money for a company, they just exist to address complaints, and are therefore a net drain on a company's bottom line.
A "service based economy" means either highly trained experts providing services to businesses or individuals (either financial, technical, logistics, project management, software, IP, design, consulting, or, well, a buttload of other things), or it could also mean physical location-based services like cooking, building, maintenance, or anything that requires a worker to be in a specific location.
Services make up 77% of the US economy, so it seems to be working out fairly well.

I don't think that the fundamentals have changed today. The most innovative products and services today are developed in this method. . For example the iPhone or the equivalent Samsung product are very innovative and their development and sales are driven by this philosophy of producing something great that people will voluntarily buy.

Is it just me, or is this less pro Laissez-faire capitalism than some of our main stream politicians? Government intervention, profits being reinvested in growth instead of endless buybacks, the market not being infallible (99 times out of 100), taxes being used for the community being a good thing and most importantly a better way of life for the children of tomorrow.
As Milton Friedman said, you need to work long and hard to make the politically impossible practical, but a few crisis on the way, effective re-education institutions (think tanks) an accepted best business practice in economic sociopathic profit making schemes (chicago school etc), and you can turn a dream into a nightmare for most.

The guy flying around reminded me of today's wingsuit flyers. They can fly to any location they want.......as long as it is at the bottom of a mountain.
Sadly two or so big companies holding a majority rarely hurts them. Yes if you charge double the fair price with your monopoly it just takes one upstart to shake things up (assuming they can break that mold) but also people will just buy what they're familiar with. The real aim is to remove direct competition, your brand handles one territory or niche and theirs promises not to step on your toes. I agree people should be allowed to privately own and profit from their business to help it grow but there's got to be some oversight too.
Companies don't have complete pricing power. If a monopoly artificially raises prices, what stops a competitor from entering that market? Lets take the example of railways: a railroad to a remote town is owned by a large railway company. This company decides to raise transport rates because there is no other competitors. Our first problem appears: competition. Now that this particular railroad is very profitable, competitor railroad companies start buying up nearby land to perhaps open up a rival road (to capture this profit). This then forces our monopoly to lower rates, so as to make such an endeavour less appealing. Meantime, our second problem: decreasing demand. Consumers have now decided it more profitable to use some other service, namely; driving a car, or airplane travel, or boat travel, or whatever other means of transportation. There is now less demand for the railroad service and thus people are no longer using your service (less profit). There is also rationing, however this doesn't apply here.
Thus monopolies in practise never work: there is always competition or diminished demand due to higher prices.
@@lmy2366 Consumer centric business models completely destroy expected economic behaviors. So a new competitor can easily fail despite offering a better product for a better price. Some models lock the consumer into an service ecosystem that is too valuable to give up, some provide far greater convenience and versatility, some provide a plethora of additional services as benefits.
Amazon is a key example. You start off with Prime just for free shipping, then they offer Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Reading, etc. It's a hard pass to go from this to say Alibaba or Walmart online even if they were to offer cheaper goods and free shipping.
Apple is a different example. Despite Windows/Android OS products being substantially cheaper and more versatile, Apple products still sell in large numbers at a significant premium. It owes it's original success to a marketing strategy, but it's continued success is because their OS is an ecosystem that connects seamlessly between each of their products, and if you were to switch to Windows or Android you pretty much have to start over. That intimidates consumers from making the switch even if making the switch has more economic value.

If the long term costs of a service overwhelm the short term benefits relative to an alternative, then the consumer will switch services.
In the case of Amazon, it still beats Walmart in terms of price and is still one of the cheapest online retailers. That lead is narrowing, however they could not have expanded and continue to expand their market share without offering the better deal, despite your claim of that being otherwise.
In the case of Apple and their ecosystem: you will find in a detailed analysis of value that Apple products are simply superior for consumers prefering quality over price. Also, the fact that American consumers purchase a new phone every three years details very much that consumers wouldn't be unwilling to sacrifice short term benefits over longer term ones.

It's not necessarily cost-better for consumers to use, it's merely convenient to have all your services tied to a single account. It may be cheaper to simply avoid Amazon prime and use alternative services that provide TV, music, and reading. But managing an account to various companies is more of a hassle than a single company.
Apple products simply aren't better than other products, they are only perceived that way due to marketing strategy. Let me remind you that Apple is currently selling proprietary caster wheels for $700.
Here's a final point for you. In the 1980s A&W created a 1/3 lb burger, larger than McDonald's 1/4 lb burger and sold it for the same price as McDonald's. Buyers go for the most value right? Well the A&W burger struggled to sell, focus group studies found that it was because the majority of participants believed the McDonald's burger was bigger due to poor mathematical literacy.

But if such services had no economic benefit to the consumer, why would they purchase them? Your point isn't a point at all as you haven't actually proven scientifically that Amazon is more costly than competitors.
Lets say you earn $5,000 of income a year and use an Apple product. Lets also say another person earns $50,000 and uses the same product: do you both derive the same utility from the usage of it? Why is it Apple caters to the higher end of the market? Because consumers whom earn a higher income derive more utility from their products, and so they can afford the dearer price (yet higher quality).
"Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door" if only it were that simple. Companies still need to advertise their products to attract customers. No doubt the example you listed was poor communication with the customer. But just beat the path! If only first you knew how to find it.
Except that one thing many economists missed in the past is consumers are not perfect logicians and won’t always make perfect decisions to pick the product with the best value offering.

When I was in my freshman year of high school, a bottle of soda cost about a dollar. When I left high school, that'd same bottle would probably run me about... about a dollar. Even though four years had passed.
Fast forward a decade latter, and someone who is a high school senior now is probably paying twice as much for a bottle of soda than they were as a freshman.

Well, the vast majority of young people identify as socialist now. But the difference is if you go out of your way to hate the people that are allowing you to make money in the first place, then they won't have much of a reason to care. Also, this is a cartoon that just gives you and introductory understanding to economics.
There are obviously other factors, but this isn't exactly an economics professor lecturing a class about capitalism.
The only thing stopping economies working like this is regulation, and (semi) sound money. It's literally happening right now in places like Dubai, which was poorer than it's neighbors less than 30 years ago. It's happened in Singapore, South Korea, early 2000's China, and parts of Africa like Botswana.
The only thing that's amazing is how Communism can fail, and fall into hell in country wide experiments over 60 times in the last 100 years and people still cling to it. While the same simple formula for capitalism (low regulation/low gov ownership/low taxes/secure property rights/sound money) STILL WORKS in nearly every instance, and socialists can't fathom how it happened.

@@sirellyn The "Low Regulation" part is tough. "Caveat Emptor" can be a real problem in low regulation environments.
For instance, in the early 20th century, women used to paint Radium on watches and other objects; often licking their paint brushes for moisture. Even after the danger was known and people were dying in poverty the company tried to avoid all culpability.
Less regulation absolutely encourage more economic development; but the side effects on people and the environment can sometimes be catastrophic. :( Adam Smith even said that Capitalism needed a moral compass to work in society.

Fudso's employees all got paid so incredibly poorly, and/or tricked into uber-high-interest loans, and/or convinced to go on untenable finance on some item they didn't need, that a large portion had to go into deep debt, or poverty; Especially after that damning confusion where the insurance company gave HIM money for some reason. None of them had the opportunity, the money, nor the resources to start their own companies. The dream where price fixing didn't go amazingly well was quickly popped, as the price fixers realised it was incredibly easy to fix prices, and temporarily lower them just to push out any would-be competitors; while also paying off any governments who tried to intervene. The promise of increasing wages of course never materialised, as over the next decades the factor difference between employees and CEOs constantly broke its own records. The destruction of natural resources, and displacement of local businesses, ended with large amounts of corruption, both in corporations and the governments themselves, wherein the 'profit motive' only resulted in the biggest market of all 'lobbying'. It was at this point that poverty, unhappiness, and deaths from capitalism were plain, and increasing! But necessarily covered up, forrr profit! Goooo profit motive!

A government can't have competition - by definition, it has a monopoly on the use of force. The only way governments can compete is by by migration - if you don't like your government, you may be able to emigrate elsewhere. But not easily.

Once that cheaper soap gets bought, many more come in its place in the hopes that they can just get a bunch of easy money from being bought out which is a big drain on the money of the monopoly which forces the monopoly to either compete or go bankrupt
