This is the opening from their R30: 30th Anniversary World Tour in 2004.
The R30 Overture (intro) consists of part of a song taken from each of their first 6 albums...
Album 1... Finding My Way (Rush)
Album 2... Anthem (Fly by Night)
Album 3... Bastille Day (Caress of Steel)
Album 4... A Passage to Bangkok (2112)
Album 5... Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage (A Farewell to Kings)
Album 6... Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres (Hemispheres)
They then perform in entirety The Spirit of Radio from their 7th album (Permanent Waves).
I see Justin reacting to RUSH and I click thumbs up, it's not much but it's all I got. Living in homeless shelter in Calgary but that's changing come Monday, woot !
I almost didn't see this concert (their 30th anniversary tour). I had a loss at the beginning of the year and was grieving and almost didn't buy tickets. But by summer I decided that my partner would have liked for me to go, so I got a ticket to see them in their home town (Toronto), which was the end of the tour. It was a wonderful, and healing, experience. Losing a partner or spouse is very debilitating, and everything in the world seems strange and foreign when you're used to sharing it with someone and suddenly find yourself alone. But watching them, it all was familiar to me. I realized I had been seeing Rush in concert before I ever met my partner, and it felt comfortable and reassuring that even though everything seemed strange and different, I was still seeing my favorite band perform these same songs I had been seeing them perform for years. It was at that point I felt like I was finally healing, and I will forever love Rush because of that.
Geddy’s vocal range decreased over the years. As they got older they had to tune their instruments down from time to time. We as fans did not really care though. We were just happy to see them out on the road every year making new music.
@Moto-Truer words are rarely spoken. Rush on a off night was usually better than most bands at their peak.🍻

Remember that the guys had a 5 year break due to Neil's family tragedy. His voice had to have changed with the time. Right?
They took segments of songs starting from the first album all the way up to Permanent Waves, and made a medley out of them. Each time they switched it was to a song from the next album they put out. A really cool way to start a show!

It's funny how, when Geddy's voice was healthy, people bitched that he sounded like Donald Duck on helium, and then when he was forced to sing in a lower register because his voice was mostly shot, people complained that his voice was weak. When you factor in the countless thousands of shows Rush did over 40 years, not to mention all of the studio albums, many of which were reportedly extremely grueling to make, especially for Geddy, it's a minor miracle that he sang as well as he did on the R40 tour. The guy definitely paid the price.

I absolutely LOVED how you got more and more of a stank face the further they went. I was lucky to see this tour and the crowd was going crazy by the time they got to Hemispheres.
Yes you are correct, they did open the concert this way. I believe everyone was blown away because Rush never did a medley like this before. And A lot of those songs were songs that they haven’t performed live in a while at this point. As far as Geddy’s voice is concerned, I think something happened to his vocal cords. I’m sure people in the comments will know what it was. You will need to get used to that voice on their 2000’s albums. I will say that his voice gets even better then it is at this point of your journey once you hit their late 80’ and early 90s albums. As a drummer, there’s no doubt Neil is doubling on the ride during the song anthem in this performance. I’m not sure if he does it on the original recording. Neil hits a lot of ghost notes that you can’t hear on the original recordings unless you hear an isolated track. This comment is too long😂

Justin, yes, you'll have to adjust your expectations on Geddy's vocals for live Rush from 2004 and going forward. Dude got older and it wasn't as perfectly dialed-in as he was in the 80's through early 00's. Like, he's super strong on the Rush In Rio performance, for instance, but he starts to wane a bit by Snakes and Arrows Live (2007) and beyond. That said, on ALL the Rush videos from these later years, Geddy still has certain songs that he crushes, no problem! It's just some of the early material, songs from the early 80's and 70's, that he might struggle, just a little, on. But he's the Master, Geddy Lee, and we roll with the changes.

One of the other reactors Brad poynter had a great theory as to why they did this and I agree 100%. All of these songs were in the Getty's higher register which in his 50s were really hard for him to do but he knew the fans wanted to hear them so they did them as an instrumental.
He was protecting his voice. He had to be more selective, especially over the duration of a tour...He talks about having to adjust and changing things like beverage habits and such...
Plus it was a way they could tick off all the requests for the crazy old stuff like "Cygnus X-1" (Pts 1 and 2.)

Rush is officially in your blood! This vid. always reminds of me of what a phenom Neil is. Getty learned to somehow "push" notes without so much breath...seems to reduce the vocal stress. When I saw him at this stage he definitely improved as the concert progressed. 30 years! How many vocalists last this long to note the degradation, right! Fun Rxn!
Yeah, at this point in their career, Geddy usually needed the first two songs, or so, to warm up his aging pipes. By the third tune, though, he was usually in better shape. If you listen to later songs from this performance, he's ROCK solid.
I noticed that trend during their last 3 tours also. Starts out a little rough, but gets it together pretty quick. I mentioned in another post here, that I also noticed them slowing some songs a notch or 2 in the R40 show. Didn't bother me a bit. That show was amazing...reverse chronological order of their songs as well as their stage setup being changed as they played. Awesome, awesome show! I feel lucky to have seen them live 5 times. You knew you could never go wrong going to a Rush concert.

I love the fact that Geddy and Alex still move back and forth on the stage which they still did to the end! Of course the back to back while playing double necks during Xanadu is my all time favorite!
After 17 or 18 studio albums, a kickass montage is a great way to give your fans more of what they want!

That is a medley made outta some ass kickin songs from rush's first albums in that order; finding my way, anthem, Bastille Day, A Passage to Bangkok and Cygnus, each song outlining the chronology of every album the band made prior and, until the masterpiece in question; Permament Waves.
That was the opening of a concert during the R30 tour. I've noticed his voice straining during their last 3 tours. They also slowed the tempo a bit as well.

I saw this tour amazing and geddy is in his 50's here and he has been touring for 40 years. It ok for his voice not to sound like from 1980!
I’ve seen Rush More times than I can count. Alex is one of the most underrated guitarist in history wish you could do more interviews with these guys The first interview is good he’s talking about when Neil auditioned for the band with his little drum kit and he blew them away He said he knew in five minutes that it was going to be there drummer

I go with under appreciated now at this stage. Most people, especially musicians, whether famous or not, who know who he is, genuinely recognize his talent and contributions to guitar and music. However, getting his due amongst the circles of greats and regularly name checked, maybe not so much. Hey, like I always point out-Alex was the only guitarist good enough to hang with those other two guys so there you go.🫳🎤😂🤘✌️🖖🥇🇨🇦🎼

The only thing missing from this video is the movie that played before the montage with Jerry Stiller. It puts his antics in context...
The intro was a chronological snapshot of their music up till Permanent Waves in the following order: Finding My Way, Anthem, Bastille Day, Passage to Bangkok, Cygnus X-1, Hemispheres/Prelude. And you're right, Neil plays the drumbeat to Anthem a little differently.

I called Ged's voice 'electric' early on. Yeah, he struggled later. KANSAS just came to our State Fair (no Steve Walsh, who retired in 2014, I believe). I read from an old member that Steve just got 'worn out'. Yeah, sucks getting old! Alex's solo album used a female singer - Lisa Dalbello - for a second, I thought it was Ged. I thought they could have used her in concert - she ROCKS.

Somehow missed this! Love the intro - there's a longer version including the video that played before the band appeared, in which the guy seen cheering on the screen complains about how they never play Passage to Bangkok - it's quite fun! Also, I love the washing machines in the background where the rotisserie used to be.
Saw this tour. This was the intro to the show. We’ll, technically there was a video leading into this, which is why Jerry Stiller is on the screen behind them.
So, sometime in the 90's Geddy suffered vocal chord damage. Since then he wasn't able to hit the same high range he could during the early years... which incidently was the cause of the vocal chord damage.
I don't remember exactly at which era of Rush it happened, but that's how it went down.
Saw that tour 7 times - that opening was amazing. Their set list was already huge and packed with gems, but by adding the snippets from songs they were able to give everyone a bit of extra love! You must do a full concert video reaction. It will be a tough video, but seeing them live was an extra level.
I saw them in a smallish venue near St. Louis on this tour and I believe they did start with this set. Comedian Jerry Stiller gives it away.
Glad you reacted to this, I'm very fortunate to have seen most of my 24 shows in their home city of Toronto, when they came home, they always seemed to do a lot of improv with some tunes, that extra encore!
Their musicianship was ALWAYS evident right to the end, and as I've always said, "They had an extra gear live"!!!!!!
This was actually the intro to the R30 tour. The opening video had Jerry stiller waking from a dream and complaining that Rush never plays Bangkok anymore. They came out with this opening medley of a song from each album. Finding my way, Anthem, Bastille Day, Passage to Bangkok, Cygnus book 1 and then 2 into Spirit. Clockwork angels was the only tour I missed since Presto. Geddy voice definitely declined as they aged but I get it. Hard to maintain that high range from the early years. R40 tour started with Clockwork Angels and worked it's way back in time in order. As they played the stage crew dressed in moving pictures coveralls dismantled the stage until they got to working man at the end and only had a single Amp sitting in a school chair. I'll never forget that show.

Begining with not liking Geds voice but acknowledging the musicianship of the three back in Jan or so to wanting more and reviewing every detail of the group (heck! I didnt check the behind the cover video till your review and after your video now I think is super cool!).

Getty worked long and hard on his voice over the years to protect his voice, even Changing his diet.
You didn't include it, but the opening video to the concert showed Jerry Stiller complaining about how "they never play Bangkok", & then when they go into it, his reaction is shown on the video screen.
From the R30 tour of 2003/4. Geddy still had a decent voice then but by the Snakes & Arrows tour of 2007/8 he was struggling to hit the high stuff.

R40 their last tour ever, 2015 was miraculous. Hopefully someone can get the Blu-ray of it for you. The way they opened this show, is opposite of the R40 where they started with their most recent album, and played full songs in reverse chronological order, and the stage sets were constantly devolving for almost every song to less and less gear and production which was representative of their stage at the time of that particular period. You really got to see that one from start to finish, at your own leisure and not necessarily a reaction video. But wait till you’ve finished reacting to the entire discography. Maybe due a live reaction of it with the wife or some of your family or band members live on TH-cam. That would be cool AF!🤘🎸

I think what you are trying to say about Geddy’s voice is that he could no longer hold pitch. They where in their mid sixties here. Alex was also having trouble with carpal tunnel and Neil was in constant pain with health issues. Knowing all of that this performance is all the more special.

Yea, listening to Geddy's voice change over the years is like watching my dog grow older. Poor guy can't jump for the mid air twisting Frisbee catch like he used to and I no longer expect it. Geddy's voice back in the 70/80's was never going to be sustainable with age. Robert Plant was the same way. Ric Emmett of Triumph, same thing. Good thing my old age hearing has fallen off at the same pace!
The verse part of Anthem with no vocals sounds so cool

I had the honor of seeing these music demigods live on 5 different occasions. 1987, 1989, 1997, 2002, and the R30 tour to round it out.
Absolutely mind bending experience every time.

Neil used the band Kiss as an example of the salesmen. You can even get buried in a Kiss Kasket when you die, and he didn't like that.

This clip is often described as “the best intro ever” i.e. intro to Spirit of Radio. But on the concert cd/dvd it’s listed as the “R30 Overture”. Not so much as an intro to SOR but rather a chronological compilation of excerpts from 1 song from every album from debut to Permanent Waves concluding in full version of SOR
I saw Rush 15 times through the years starting in 83 with the Signals tour (my first concert ever), and the last time was the Snakes and Arrows tour. Always an incredible show.🔥🤘🏻

This was epic! Amazing that they can sew 6 songs together!! And all the while doing it in consecutive order!! Just a way to throw out their songs they wouldn’t have time to play!! They are just monster musicians!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!
This is from R30. Geddy's voice was kinda the same when I saw them on the R40 tour. It alway's took Geddy a bit more work to get ready for a tour vocally. He insisted that he was good but, you can definitely tell here that it's harder. That's why they started doing 2112 in drop D on the Test for Echo Tour in 1996/97. So it would be easier to sing. If you watch R40 some songs it looks o.k. for him to sing but a lot of songs you can see the strain. The newer albums like Snakes and arrow, Clockwork Angel's were a lot easier for him to sing. Geddy said in interview years ago the back in the day a lot of times they would create the music and drum parts and then put the vocals to the music as Neil would be revising songs and some times Geddy would send a song back to Neil for revision. But when it came time to put in the vocals they had no choice but to do the vocals for example 2112 temples of syrinx i starts on D#5. So in the interview Geddy was like "What the hell were we thinking". You've heard ATWAS and he did some pretty high slides on Anthem/Bastille Day and the like. Hell on Freewill he hits an F5. It is much harder from like 40 on. No problem when your in your 20's/30's. I can still hit a lot of those when my throat is well lubricated but my voice can fall off after a few songs. It's hard not to sing to any Rush.

The most beautiful thing about Rush's live shows.... the obvious love the guys have for the music... Nearly exactly like the record... Never disappoints.. then there is the OBVIOUS friendship on stage

You're right, Neil was playing that drum pattern in Anthem a bit different from the recording. I always loved the original way, not sure why he changed it there. Also right about Geddy's voice, it still sounded good here, but was starting to fade from the earlier years. Exit Stage Left, Grace Under Pressure and even Show of Hands Concert videos it sounded great. I don't think anyone is able to maintain their vocals from an earlier age, especially has high and aggressive as Geddy's voice was a young guy, just can't be done.
If I wanted to hear the studio versions I'd have stayed at home. Later in life I don't expect anyone to have the same voice. When he sings lower down he's still sounding good to me. Just the odd sliding to the note he does at times is different than expectations from previous versions.
Remember though that they all smoked for years.
The music was jamming though. They could have done their entire catalogue as instrumentals and most people would be quite happy with that at a concert. :)

It’s the bonus video of the week: “The Best Intro Ever” features a medley, of one song from each album (abbreviated) in the order the albums were released,, culminating with The Spirit of Radio in its entirety. This was R30-2004 proper🤘🖖✌️🎸🎸🥁🎤🎹
To me, the difference is that he could go OVER those notes, easily, and so he could add emphasis at that top range. Eventually he could barely get to the note, and there was no emphasis in sight.
Anyway, yeah, this intro was “songs we’re not going to play” and was classic, awesome Rush delivering anyway.

Eddie Van Halen was asked what its like to be the best guitarist in the world. He responded "I don't know, ask Alex Lifeson." Pretty good endorsement.
Even with a three-hour, 30-song set list, you would never hear all the songs you wanted at a Rush show. This was a great way to give the fans some of that, plus an great retrospective on the first seven albums.
Ged's voice definitely got progressively more fried over the years. The 80s and 90s songs where he wasn't going all Robert Plant on the record held up a lot better on the later tours than something like Bastille Day. I had the pleasure to see Rush at least once on every tour from 1989 to 2015 and I loved it every time. Aside from his voice, the only time it sounded different from the record was when they chose to do it differently or something broke (there are some funny videos on YT of incidents where Alex's amps stopped working and things like that).

Sorry the audio quality on Exit Stage Left and Grace Under Pressure is bad..very frustrating situation for me. Won't happen again. My first Rush reactions were back in Jan/Feb this year. I didn't like Geddy's voice at all so I never got into them when I was younger. But the music and musicianship kept me coming back this year and I decided to go through the discography. Anyways... welcome along

@@ischmidt yeah i know of Vulfpeck and Joe Dart. A band I play in right now plays a lot of their music during our breaks. I don’t know a ton of it. Just some. Sounds like they do coke. So fast lol 😂

Well, you actually gone done and did it! You can rest assured that they stepped on stage from behind the curtains with that. I've seen well over a dozen shows, all starting with the song that intro lead to. Imagine being a decades long fan in that crowd!

I saw the R30 show in the UK at Manchester, first time they'd been back for 12 years, and it was Neil's birthday.

When you see how hard Geddy was singing in the early years (check out the Capital Theatre videos), it is amazing he could still talk. Around the R40 years, there was a day or two between shows and he would make a point on not even talking much between shows just to keep what was left of his voice intact.

I totally agree about Geddy's voice. It's off putting from day one to many, then as he aged was painful. Musically they were genius till the end
I think it’s very rare for the vocals not to diminish over time especially in the rock genre. Maybe one out of ten, Anne Wilson comes to mind. I think Zeppelin could of kept on with her on vocals because Robert didn’t want to do it. That ship has sailed at this point obviously, but it would have been interesting.
Neil is wearing ballet shoes/slippers - Freddie Gruber, the jazz drummer and instructor he took lessons from in the 90's, recommended those in place of tennis shoes.
