How Leclerc broke his curse + Why Red Bull struggled | Monaco GP Podcast

  • Charles Leclerc's victory in the Monaco Grand Prix was one that clearly meant so much to him.
    But could it mean just as much for the prospect of a 2024 Formula 1 title fight?
    That's discussed on The Race F1 Podcast this week as Edd Straw is joined by Mark Hughes, Scott Mitchell-Malm and Josh Suttill to dissect how the Monaco weekend unfolded and why Ferrari's current trajectory might mark it out as a genuine contender.
    Its fortunes were in stark contrast to those experienced by Red Bull, so why did it come unstuck at a track that has previously been such a happy hunting ground and how deep-rooted are its struggles that have now been exposed?
    There's also a look at Mercedes after a slight uptick and the introduction of a new front wing, and whether there's a competitive paranoia creeping in for Lewis Hamilton.
    Plus, there's a whole host of questions from The Race Members' Club to get through too.
    00:00 - Intro
    02:43 - How the Monaco GP played out
    04:27 - Why Red Bull struggled
    09:15 - Leclerc wins at home
    16:41 - A missed opportunity for Piastri?

    23:00 - Albon breaks Williams’s duck

    I think that the mandatory use of all 3 tire compounds during the race should be adapted for every F1 race, not just Monaco! The track could also be widened or altered between the tunnel exit and Rascasse to create at least 1 good overtaking opportunity. These 2 changes could dramatically improve the excitement of this race and save the Monaco GP!

    Make a mandatory pit stop during racing conditions with same 2 compound rule. They COULD change tires during a red flag, but they’d still need to pit since that doesn’t count towards the mandatory green flag running pit stop.

  • @michaelredford5389
    @michaelredford5389 หลายเดือนก่อน

    On the topic of the Red flag, I know that changing the rules because of a single event(race) isn't very practical, but like the race abandoned rule; where you need to have completed a certain % of the race for it to be valid/allow full points. I think the rule to allow teams to swap dry compound tyres under red flag conditions should only be allowed after a certain amount of the race has been completed, for example 10%. That way they couldn't swap until lap 7/8 and we would still have some excitement in the pitlane for the race instead of that snoozefest. And that's a snoozefest even by modern Monaco GP standards.

    Perez looks at Kmag 3x in that moment. He never once looked left so if anything he had no idea Hulk was there, but he definitely knew where Kmag was and started moving towards the wall to block him out but Kmag was already in there.
    So yeah I can see why it was deemed a racing incident but it’s also confusing why Kmag didn’t back out. You could see the gap was waning it wasn’t worth the chance to hang in there. He can’t *expect* Perez to be accommodating or polite and move aside so they could drive side by side and be overtaken.

    I know it's a big deal for somebody from Monaco to win their home Grand Prix, but it shouldn't surprise many people that a country the size of a small city can't possibly have enough home drivers in a grid of 20 drivers to win a home race often, despite the fact that many f1 drivers call Monaco home (their kids would probably have the resources and mentorship to become top tier drivers)

    I think the "second formation lap" counted as race lap because of the technicalities of the timekeeping system. At least that is what F1 always claims as the reason why backmarkers have to physically unlap themselves before a restart with the safety car ending instead of race control simpy letting them line up behind the SC and adding a lap to their count.

  • @selder_7
    @selder_7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    With the red flag, you should be able to change tyres but only if you then go to the back of the grid on restart. It creates jeopardy but if everyone changes there tyres then the grid stays the same

    Only in F1 are teams allowed to freely change tires and fix damage with no penalty. A red flag is suppose to be a stoppage. If you want to change tires, they should have to pit after the red flag is lifted.

    • @thomasprescott5333
      @thomasprescott5333 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I may be wrong but I think the idea behind changing tyres after a red flag is due to the possibility of damage to tyres by debris picked up off the track before the red flag was shown. The FIA could make a rule change and require teams to fit the same compound at a red flag, that would maintain the requirement to make a later pit stop to change compounds.

    25:20 It's one thing for the FIA to treat the situation differently. They are allowed to change their minds and they have stated they will be less lenient this year....lol. It's another thing for the team to treat the drivers so differently. Gasly destroyed both cars at Australia last year. Unlike Sunday, they were both on for solid points, too. Then the team argues with the FIA, so Gasly can avoid a race ban.
    Ocon made a mistake. It was foolish. At the same time, I don't understand why everyone is coming down on him so harshly.

    You poo poo the idea of removing Nouvelle Chicane and having a long 8tth gear run down to Tabac, but I think it bears proper consideration. DRS could come in, say, 30-50 meters before the end of the tunnel. That allows enough space for a large, straight, high speed run, requiring a significant braking zone before Tabac. I think its clear this would allow a following car time to get alongside a leader before the corner. Tabac is medium speed, which reduces braking length. And there would be safety concerns. I think both could be addressed by tightening Tabac a little, reducing its speed and lengthening the braking zone. The result would, IMO, be an overtaking spot with legitimate feasibility. It wouldnt be the best, but it would be better than anything around Monaco now. I've no doubt the number of overtakes would increase massively. (That said, personally, I'd prefer to keep the historical track as much as possible...but I think there is a clear and feasible solution if youre looking to increase overtakes at Monaco.)
