This same thing happened to a friend. Found a guy on his porch who tried to get in his home. And then just hung out on the porch till cops came. He didn’t press charges. Two weeks later that same guy broke into a home two blocks over and murdered an elderly woman. My friend took it very hard and was messed up over this for a while.

    • @brian5o

Wow! I am so sorry your friend went through that. I can't imagine how bad he must've felt finding that out. I hope he's doing okay now.
Even if he would've pressed charges, the guy probably would have been released pretty quickly and what happened still likely would've happened anyway.

How much of a Pro 2A are you? Because we can dissect it if you’d like? Are you really Pro 2A or are you Pro 2A as long as your state says it’s legal? Let’s face , the right to bear arms, means the right to bear arms and that means the right to freaking bear arms whether you’re in public or not in public. They are supposed to uphold The constitution they swore an oath to uphold yet they turn around and enforce unconstitutional laws. Making things legal means they allowed you or gave you permission to. Just like legalizing marijuana, it shouldn’t even be at that level, it should be decriminalized first and never bring up the idea of “legalizing” Because we are in the land of the free, home of the brave but it turns out we are in the land of the fee, home of The slaves.

Yeah, see thats the problematic end of the 2A... People like you who BELIEVE in the constitution. As if its a matter of belief. As if the constitution is above and beyond the law. As if its magic, or religious scripture. There isnt a SINGLE WORD in the 2A that says anything about you or your ability to have, carry, or use guns. Not ONE word.
They "swore an oath" And what is that... An oath to what? The constitution? This is American mythos and belief. This is not reality. If you have the right to own, use, carry, a gun in your state. Well then its not the CONSTITUTION giving that right to you. If it was the constitution, well then why isnt the law the same in every state? Its the LAW that gives people rights. And nobody needs to protect that constitution. Its locked in under armoured glass in a museum where it belongs. "The constitution" is not a living, breathing thing that is living amongst us and requires protection Nor does it give people rights. EVERY country has a constitution. And constitutions are not written to empower you above and beyond the law. If you want that kind of thing in your life, then go read a bible or something. See how many rights that gives you. And you really, really, really believe you are in the land of the free?
As an American, you have extremely few real rights compared to people in for example Europe where people have much more freedom in their lives. As a US citizen, you are always set up to lose whenever you are confronted with the law, the government, or big corporations. Everybody knows that. They TELL you you are free, but its exactly because people feel so insignificant against forces bigger than yourself, that makes people, historically, look to guns, the bible, and constitution for a sense of empowerment. Because the LAW, gives you extremely few real rights.
This is why every superhero is American. People LOVE this idea of being the one that can stand tall against oppression and powers bigger than themselves. And superheroes dont cash in on their super powers and live a life in luxury on a beach, do they. No. They stay in their communities and live the life of an average guy, but one that is able to fly over, or stand on a roof top and be above it all. Youre angry... All of you guys are. But yall are angry at the wrong stuff.

Whether they ask questions or not If they arrest him the DA's office or judge would simply order him released if he didn't have warrants which they check. It is pointless and only wastes resources to arrest someone when your city government doesn't want to pay to keep them in custody. Putting someone who is cold into a warm holding cell overnight and given meals is not punishment. In years past and probably still today people will try to get arrested when it's cold. Talk to the mayor or city council if you want mental health patients handled. That is why many are not at warming shelters because of mental or drug issues.

It was like that for at least 5 hours since I hadn't gone back out after getting home from work. My wallet was in plain sight in the dash, all my tools in the back were still there. It was all visible from the sidewalk. They live two doors down, and were quite proud of themselves for doing the right thing as they patted themselves on the back while walking home. Always good to have a plan with your significant other. I have educated my girlfriend on the use of firearms and take her to practice frequently. We have known locations in the home with defense mechanisms and a plan for when we need to shelter in place, need to go, when someone is trying to break in, and when someone has broken in.

Absolutely correct, the gun is a deterrent to the situation. Shows that you can defend yourself with lethal force, if necessary. You did the right thing for you and the family. But the police playing 20 questions while you're still in the situation? NOT cool! I'm a retired LEO, the rules were different when I was still on the job. Glad you and yours are fine!!!

If there’s ever a time when you’re faced with a situation that requires the help of

If the guy was trying to open your front door isn’t that an attempt at breaking and entering? If he got into the house he’s an immediate threat to Rob and his family. I feel like the Police maybe should have taken that factor a bit more seriously but that’s just my opinion.

13:18 you did it 100% correctly. You were ready IF the situation escalated but you didn't escalate it. He was on your porch but IF he tried to come in you were ready. It's like you have a fire extinguisher HOPING you have a fire, you have it in CASE you have a fire. In case something DOES catch on fire, you have the fire extinguisher in your hand. Lots of guys will have a fire extinguisher handy if they've done fuel system work and are firing it up to be ready IF it catches fire. You don't want to spray your engine bay with co2 foam, but it's better than the car and garage burning down.

While I'll never recommend that anyone open the door to someone you don't know, this guys dementor was non threating and I feel you handled that well. You were armed to protect yourself and you stayed cool. That all said, you never know when there might be more than one person out there. In my area, we have had instances where someone will knock on the door and start talking to you with some lame story then their buddies rush the door as soon as you open it. Thankfully everything turned out ok and you didn't need to use force.

You handled this rationally and fairly. I appreciate your level-headed approach. Thank you for sharing your experience. Charging this guy MIGHT have felt good at the time, but what would it produce? Would it make you safer? No. If you had pressed charges, he'd be released in short order and would have every opportunity to do you harm in the near future.
Personally, I'd rather have a more stout front door than a glass door that may require I use a gun to "defend my home." Seems like utilizing a better door for security would be a much easier way to achieve the same result - and you don't have to take anyone's life! Again, you pretty rationally and reasonably discussed this. And say you DID end up shooting and killing the guy. It wouldn't be a stretch to see it coming to pass that your wife and family would want to move, knowing what happened on your front porch. So you could end up having to leave the wonderful house you designed, built and saw come to fruition because you decided to take "self-defense" to the most violent extreme end. Easily avoided by taking another approach: utilize stout security and give the police the time to arrive and it resolves itself.
(Plus, say the guy did start kicking at the door. There's nothing that says you HAVE to engage. Just grab the family, exit the rear door, jump in the car and escape. Cops come and deal with the dude in the end and it gets resolved without the use of a firearm. There are LOTS of other ways to deal with this scenario that don't involve killing someone.)
The US is creating the homeless and mental health crisis and this is the result: cold, homeless, mentally unstable people looking for shelter. When you villainize the poor and desperate, you abandon humanity. And we're doing a great job with that right now.
Of COURSE Rob was within his rights to defend himself and assert the sovereignty & safety of his home and family. But did he need to shoot and possibly kill this guy? Nope.
Anyone trying the front door on a house in gun-loving America either has a death wish or is mentally unstable. Or maybe a murderer. Or all three! I'm putting my money on drugs & mental health.
And mental health is NOT the problem in our country. That's just one of many symptoms: drug-addiction, domestic violence, crime, dysfunction, despair, poverty, stress, etc. ALL the result of economic stress. Lack of economic opportunity is THE cause. Lack of money, honey!
Either way, as long as we support rapacious capitalism, expect more of the same. If it continues much longer, the USA will have permanent shanty towns from coast to coast like many other failed countries.
    Thanks.
