Picked up one of those Subaru specific oil funnels with the screw on cap, not a first world issue but for the sake of a few dollars its not now impossible to spill oil even with your eyes closed.
all of these direct injections suffer for power gains by high-pressure fuel combustion chamber. I have Audi Q3 I bought for my wife and years of turning wrenches on VW Audi and have found the right synthetic oil with low VOC and periodic road trips in car of 2-3 hours at highway speed prevent carbon buildup. Great post and perspective by you sir.
As someone who owns a 2018 WRX, I found this video pretty informative, especially on the PCV system with the DIT system used on the FA20. I talked with my local Subaru shop about an oil water separator, and they told me that it was more trouble than it was worth, so I'm curious to see how you decide to manage this on your personal car. It was also nice to see your take on the underside of the current generation WRX. Perhaps in a future video you could discuss the difference between the regular front strut and the inverted strut, which I believe your car is fitted with.
I honestly think the fix is to add some form of intake or port injection back. The cold side of the intercooler is the perfect spot for water/meth (keeps TB and intake manifold pre-injector clean too). I have water meth injection on my EJ25 and it's very clean but I don't REALLY want to add water meth on my new Ascent 2.4 DIT because I don't want to void the warranty.
Thanks mr. Subaru for the gasket instructions @5:18 . So simple yet so hard to find .. about to do second oil change (1k) on wifes 2020 ascent and because of you im using the black AA170 filters over the blue. The dealer told me they would use them on her free 6k mi oil changes I just had to pay the $3 difference
I’m pretty sure the oil capacity for the new wrx and forester xt is 5.4 not 5.1, 5.1 is for NA models excluding some crosstreks and Imprezas that are 4.8 qt and 6.9 qt for the 3.6 liter. Brz is 5.7 qt
Number 1. Replace filter first so your draining the old oil back in the engine after draining and replacing the drain plug.Numer 2.Dont poke the plastic film on the oil filter into the filter hole trying to remove the plastic protective film off it.Could knock plastic or debris into the new filter. Just my 2 cents worth
I asked Little Johny who is Captein of the Lube Lift . . . down at our local RU Dealership . . . if he knows anything about CFM Crank . . . and he said no but if it makes you high he's all in
clip (848). I did some research on the motor oil and I brought Idemitsu brand on amazon. well for my car a full synthetic 0w-20 engine sn/gf-5 5 quart is $25.36 in comparison to the Subaru brand at $38.63. I thought maybe I could share this with you and help you save a little extra money. Outstanding job.
Air oil separators do not remove the need to worry about direct injection valves... In some cases, they may help. In the FiST world I've yet to see evidence they do more than collect water when it's cold outside.
Hey man. Glad to see u still got the WRX. It’s a great car. I got a FXT. I strongly recommend installing the IAG AOS and EGR delete. It’s will all but eliminate blow by and carbon in the throttle body. It will also void ur warranty so it’s up to you. But u are a Subaru mechanic so......
Great explanation of the PCV system. I haven’t heard of Subaru’s having any problems with Carbon build up on the intake values. I have a 2014 Crosstrek FB 20. I bought a catch can. I’m struggling with a good place where to mount the can.
a 2014 crosstrek should still be port injection in the FB20B, direct injection was started with the FB20D in model year 2017 for the imprezas and 2018 for the crosstreks if wikipedia is correct.
Can you describe the clear flood mode with the push-button start? Does it require both feet? Do you have to hold the start button down for 30 seconds? Does the starter stop when you release the button?
I'd like your thoughts on the bottle of Subaru carbon clean my dealership trys to sell me each time I pick up oil and filters for my routine maintenance. Part # SOA868V9150
Hello My Subaru I used a Mahle Oil Filter on my 2019 Subaru Forester base model. Also I didn't use a torque wrench to tightened the drain plug. what do you think of Mahle because I didn't want to use the original Subaru oil filter (Honeywell FRAM). It came from the factory with Toyo Roki filter. I was trying to find a Toyo Roki (filtech) filter for this but I thought that the Honda K24 filter (Filtech) with the same outside diameter and the correct flow rate would also work I can get those readily. Your thoughts? Also, I have a tip for you. Loosen the oil filter before you drain the oil from the plug I noticed much more oil came out after I did that.
I refuse to buy a direct injection vehicle unless it also includes injectors over the valves as a secondary cleaning system. Lots of these direct injection cars are going to be running rough once they reach higher mileage.
I had a 2016 WRX that ran a black filter from the factory but my wife's 2017 Forester XT has a blue filter. Why do you suspect different oil filters for the same FA20 DIT engine?
Thanks so much for a thorough explanation and video. I wish I could buy this car!! On the Snap-On torque wrench -is it rechargeable or batteries? When it gets low on power how is the accuracy? Have a great day!
I highly doubt voltage levels affect the pressure sensors. They either have enough voltage to work or they dont, and I imagine the system has some kind of low voltage alert
How much do you think EGR contributes to carbon build up compared to the PCV system? do you think running Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30 with lower NOACK number would also help since Subaru doesn't give away many details on their oil? or have you heard that theory?
Hi again Mr. Subaru. There’s a humming noise from my left front tyre and it gets louder at higher speeds. The car pulls to the left slightly even after getting a whee alignment. I doubted the wheel bearing and replaced it with a new one. The sound is still there though. Should I replace the CV axle shaft ?
Not sure if this has been asked but what are your thoughts on changing the oil hot/warm vs cold, and using transmission fluid inside the crankcase just before an oil change to full get the gunk out? I don't wanna damage my seals
just curious, why is it better to crank the engine for 15 seconds to get oil pressure, instead of starting the engine and getting the same pressure? just wondering- I like your videos
Do you have any knowledge or information about the DIT carbon build up? I’ve installed an AOS to reduce as much potential blow by but the only real fix as shown with VW and BMW motors is to have it walnut blasted to remove large deposits. I too have a newer WRX with only 25k miles and I’ve just learned of this inefficiency that plagues our motors.
How do you feel about the FA20/24 break-in recommended by Subaru versus the old standard of 500/1000 mile oil changes? I bought a 2020 Ascent and all it stated was to not go over 4K RPM's for the first 1K miles (if I recall) and change oil every 6K. My apologies if this has been covered before.
Hey Mr. Subaru, my buddy just bought a new Toyota 86 this spring and he says the 2.0L in his car is direct and port injected. I didn't believe him and I checked it out and believe he was correct. Is this not the case for you WRX here? If not yes a oil seperator is in need.
Is the PCV in the same spot on the FA/FB as the ej series(back of the engine, passenger side) ? I just bought one for my '13 legacy. I haven't had to work on my legacy much besides brakes, since it only had 17k on it. So i haven't even looked yet!
You might be able to answer my question, I can’t find an answer anywhere. I have a 2018 WRX and I live in northern Canada. I already have a block heater but it’s still a very hard start below -30C I bought a 500W oil pain heater but I just can’t seem to find a good spot for it. The only flat surface flat enough to install the pad heater is very close to the header and I am worried heat from the header will melt the pad. Any input on a good location to install the oil pan heater?
Pin clutch pedal to the floor if manual. Pin throttle pedal to floor and hold it there. Crank. Engine will crank, but not start. Remove foot for throttle and it'll crank as normal again.

You are one of the few people who knows how to break in an engine the proper way, good work.
So you must wait a longer interval before the second oil change for about 10-12k miles?
Could listen to you talk about Subaru engines for days
After you poured the first quart, you had the makings of a funnel in your hand.
That's exactly what I do. First quart becomes the funnel for the rest!

Nice video bro. But why they using plastic nowadays for the intake plenum?
That's a turn off for me. Love the bright red of the earlier engines.
Thermal isolation of the intake air charge. The polymer intake doesn't heat soak like a cast aluminum one.
