Shiny Pokémon and the Nintendo e-Reader

- Can you use the Nintendo e-Reader to catch shiny Pokémon in Ruby and Sapphire? I recently went on this adventure with a 20+ year old Nintendo peripheral, and found some interesting results.

You tried to get a guaranteed shiny and ended up with egg on your face.
It's not legal by Nintendo's standards, but I'd love to try this on an Emulated copy so I can add in the necessary data to the Bad Egg myself. It'd be one heck of a unique shiny! With enough shenanigans, it could probably be moved into the latest games too.
Why do you need an emulated copy to do it ? You can dump the save of your cartridge
@@ulqi you wouldn’t *need* an emulated copy, but the materials you need to transfer saves back and forth are much more common for Gen 4+ than they are for Gen 3. It’d just be easier for the average person (me) to accomplish. Instead of needing a flashcart/save transfer device, you could just transfer the pokemon from an emulated copy of a Gen 3 game to an emulated Gen 4 game, then to a modded 3DS, then traded to a legit copy for transfer to Gen 5+.
If we weren’t already modifying the save data I wouldn’t consider using emulation, but since that barrier was already crossed, I believe it’s fair game for the situation.
It might be easier to just modify the eReader card to add in the necessary data. There are method to printing eReader cards online.

The only purely beneficial thing I'm seeing with the e-Reader nowadays is printing the Eon Ticket or getting the exclusive event Deoxys, Mew, Lugia + Ho-Oh, etc

It’s probably because shinys are determined off of trainer ID and the game doesn’t know what to do in that regard.

Could it be related to the Trainer ID of the Pokémon?
I remember seeing a video on shiny hunting in the battle tower using this glitch.
That works because the AI trainers team actually uses your own ID for their Mons.
Maybe the two you tried failed because the Pokemon were tied to a specific Trainer ID causing them to turn into bad Eggs because the caught mons ID differs from yours
Yeah the trainer ID is the data that most trainers don't have that I referred to, I didn't want to get too into the weeds about how the glitch works

@@SirToastyToes Hope this doesn't come off as obnoxious, but I got very interested in this because of your video, and I delved into this subject.
First of all, every single Battle E trainer actually DOES have a TID/SID. The Pokemon who is shiny on the team actually has a different TID/SID than the rest of the team members. None of these pokemon are missing any data at all!
Second, the reason these Pokemon become corrupted is because on capture is because when you catch a Pokemon, it overwrites their TID/SID with yours. This changes the encryption key, which causes the checksum of the pokemons data to fail, and that sets the bad egg bit.
Third, because of this Pokemons tid/sid becomes yours, it would actually cease to be shiny if you could catch it. The reason battle tower Pokemon work is because they use your tid/sid, so they're shiny for that tid and don't change upon capture.
Fourth, you could fix the bad egg flag via ACE, just unsetting the bit, and maybe you'd have to change its tid/sid back to the original using ace as well. Alternatively, you could use ACE to change your tid/sid to its before capture, so it works out. Or rng your tid/sid to be the same as its before catch. I bet it wouldn't even bad egg if you did that.
I don't have a shiny one of these Pokemon cards, but I am interested in it myself to see if I can catch without corruption, so I'll try soon.

The e-Reader is like the one thing I never bought mostly because I never saw it in the store, which is a real shame because stuff like this is neat and was kinda like early dlc
We never even got the e-Reader here in Europe, so videos like this that focus on the peripheral are fascinating to me. Our way to get to Southern Island was a download station event instead of an e-card.
I tried doing a similar thing to get a guaranteed shiny. I was familiar with the Mew glitch/long range trainer glitch and the shiny Ditto glitch in Pokémon red, blue, and yellow. I thought that I'd combine them and get a shiny Mew. Initial problem: Mew does in fact learn transform by level up, but at level 10 instead of before 7. I knew you could lower its level by lowering the ID Pokémon's attack modifier, but could it work the other way around? After finding the one and only use for Rage as a TM, I put it on a Pidgey and found a Ditto. it raised its attack by 3 stages before the battle ended. Perfect, the Mew I find should be level 10! Which it was! I did the song and dance twice due to accidentally knocking out the first Mew transformed into my shiny Gyarados twice. But the second time, I got it! "DITTO was caught!" ...I was then infomed of the Transform glitch where any wild Pokémon that uses transform is flagged as a Ditto upon capture. Disappointed, but not a total loss. I had planned to do a full shiny team in my Pokémon crystal version and a few members needed bred before to be before the postgame and that shiny Ditto was a big help.
When I tell you I did exactly the same thing as you like two months ago (on real hardware). I was SO disappointed
@@jadestrider2660 I did it on my real games too. It took seeing the Ditto in the box in oak's lab for it to sink in that I had just actually caught a shiny ditto

I was sad to find out you also can’t steal items from the E-Reader card trainers.
I tried to steal a Leichi berry from one of the trainers but I didn’t get to keep the item after (unlike all the normal battles in generation 3 where you get to keep the item you steal after a battle).

There used to be a page on the data format of the ereader cards for pokemon gba, but I can't find it anymore. As I recall though, you are correct, there is only enough data on the card to encode encounter data, and it just hands the reins to the simple battle ai from there. Although almost anything is possible with ACE, so in theory you could fill in the gaps in the data.
Probably could figure it out from the emerald decomp, given infinite time lol

i *think* the bad egg will appear if the pokemon you are battling does not have the same original trainer ID as you- because the pokemon encryption key is derived from the original trainer id and secret ids or something like that

It begs the question. If somebody decoded the barcode on the cards, could they create new barcodes to add in new content?
If the cards just unlock content already in the game’s rom then it wouldn’t work but if the trainers don’t already exist in the rom then there would be a possibility.
Knowing Nintendo they probably did their best to make it impossible.

I guess even if you were able to get it, you probably won't be able to send to Pokebank, because it would probably be flagged as illegal by it since you caught it outside Meteor Falls (Bagon's area) and it isn't an egg?

The e-Reader didn't sell very well overseas, it got a lot more sets in Japan where it was discontinued in the US

Any chance you could fact check the rumors you can obtain the Altering Cave Pokemon using FRLG Ereader crards and Mystery Gift?

Actually valid question, can’t you get shinies in the battle tower? (I forgor) does this glitch work with those properly? Guess you’d have to actually get one to test it…
Come to think of it I know people have “caught” those Pokémon I just never looked into how cuz I’m more of a Gen 4 guy who has no free time anymore
It is possible to get shiny pokemon from the E-Reader, just not from those cards
But you can, just use eon gicket card, the shiny hunt lati pokemon, bam shiny hunting via eReader.

I can't read Japanese, I just know these Pokemon games so I know where everything is

You didn't try to catch the shiny espeon or seaking from the battle towers.
Those are in the Trainer Tower in Emerald and FireRed/LeafGreen, which don't have the Lati@s glitch
this video literally uses footage of a video that shows that it's entirely possible to catch these and not have bad eggs because the missing information is that you have the wrong trainer id and secret id. If your IDs match Craig, the salamence can be caught normally. It also counts as a legal catch so it will transfer up to HOME.
The reason it might show footage of that video is because I made both, I came back to the problem later :)
