It's elvis and JD basically dueting probably with the imperials behind

The Imperials are doing the backing on this 1971 version. Everyone thinks it is JD Sumner and the stamps because of the 1972 impromptu version where Elvis and JD do it for Elvis on Tour documentary movie.

Just to clear it up once and for all. The album He Touched Me was recorded in 1971, so it's still The Imperials you are hearing here. Saw loads of wrong information in the comments.

Bosom of Abraham" refers to the place of comfort in the biblical Sheol (or Hades in the Greek Septuagint version of the Hebrew scriptures from around 200 BC, and therefore so described in the New Testament) where the righteous dead await Judgment Day.

Yay a half 💣 nice upbeat song just a bit too short but Elvis sounds like he was enjoying himself. There is a bit of him singing this with JD and the gang in rehearsals from Elvis on Tour - he also sings Lead Me Guide Me which is from He Touched Me album and you will hear soon 🎶🎵

Sounds like J.D. and the Stamps Quartet. I hear J.D. (Don't know why I want to call him Stamps - it is Sumner. I may do it again. I'm old. 🤣🤣). It's a FOOT STOMPER.

Frank Stamps was the original singer of the Stamps Quartet. J.D. took over after Frank retired

this was recorded on June 9th 1971, so it's still the imperials with him. J.D. did a version on Elvis on Tour.

JD sumner and the stamps are the group that did this along with many other Elvis performances including live in Vegas! JD sumner being the bass singer (at one point im not sure if it still holds) held the record for he lowest bass note sang in the world… a very talented group!
Edit: check out the behind the scenes footage of Elvis and the stamps singing gospel after a show.. it’s worth the watch!

This is The Stamps with the greatest bass in the world JD Sumner. Beautiful. he said he knew every gospel song ever written. This is from way back in black gospel. He was right at home doing that song. He kills you with the stamps on "Sweet Sweet Spirit" from 1972, Hampton Rds, I was actually there three rows back from the stage. It will give you chills. You are keeping me busy today Seph, Love it. Mary

Hey *SEPH* WONDERFUL REACTION I LOVEEEEEE THAT SONG!!!! ELVIS AND HIS DEEP VOICE!!! I POSTED THE 71 BACKUP SINGERS ETC - CAN'T WAIT TIL YOU GET TO EOT / ELVIS ON TOUR 72!!! IN 73 HE WON A GOLDEN GLOBE FOR IT!!!!!
Elvis on Tour is a 1972 American concert film starring Elvis Presley during his fifteen-city spring tour earlier that year. It is written, produced, directed by Pierre Adidge and Robert Abel and released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).
Following his return to live performances and touring after his acting career, Presley starred in the documentary Elvis: That's the Way It Is with MGM in 1970. Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, then arranged a deal for another documentary film with the studio by early 1972. MGM hired Abel and Adidge, who previously documented Joe Cocker's 1970 tour of the United States. The crew filmed four Presley shows that were later intertwined with interviews. Assisted by Martin Scorsese, it featured the use of split screens.
The film was released on November 1, 1972. While it opened to mixed reviews, it became a box-office success. In 1973, Elvis on Tour won the award for Best Documentary Film at the 30th Golden Globe Awards.

Yes, this has the vibe of "Swing Low Sweet Chariot".
I love this vocal stunt by all the singers. This totally resonates with me. I adore this song.
Often times Elvis would jokingly compete with J.D. Sumner`s low register. Of course, Elvis knew that was impossible, and that`s why it was so funny. It was as if a mouse wanted to hurt an elephant by stepping on its foot.
    Both laughed about it.
Congratulations on your second Anniversary of successfully controlling the Elvis Train with so many people aboard. 🍾🍾🥳💐🎵🗞🎓🥂🎓🗞🎵💐🥳🎂🎂
    Why wouldn`t you feel nostalgic?
2 years are 730 days. That`s a long time. You`re on a crash course of Elvis's musical history.
Intense events tend to bend space-time, and that`s what you`re doing.
730 days without early Elvis music? Bah, for me, that`s a no-brainer.
Thank you, Seph. I wish you a great weekend.🎉🎉🎉

You're killin' me Seph. Did you reeaaaallllyyyy have to upload so many reactions in one day?
Well my good man I'm here again with the info which you seek 😀👍
First: Bosom is pronounced like 'buh- zihm'. It's hard for me to spell out the way it is properly pronounced.
'Bosom' is usually used in place of "breast". Now in this case that meaning is not to be interpreted as 'woman's breast'.
But rather to be interpreted to mean "affection" or "love".
It was once a very popular way of expressing tender feelings in matters of the heart, particularly in poetry and in literature.
Example written by moi: "A child can always be sure of their place in their mother's bosom for a mother's love is life long."
Back in the day they also used the word "breast" in a very similar fashion in literature and poetry as well.
Moving right along: Recording Session Info Here: "Bosom Of Abraham" was recorded at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee on June 9/10 1971 Hours: June 9th: 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m./ June 9th & June 10th: 10:00 p.m.- 1:00 a.m./ June 10th: 1:30 a.m.- 4:30 a.m. & June 10th- June 11th: Elvis- 7:00 p.m.- 3:00 a.m. (I have yet to do further research into what that means but rest assured I will do my best to find out).
    Producer: Felton Jarvis
    Engineer: Al Pachucki
    Musicians:
    Guitar: James Burton
    Guitar: Chip Young
    Guitar: Charlie Hodge
    Guitar: Joe Esposito
    Piano: David Briggs

Song Info Here: "Rock O' My Soul", also known as "Rock My Soul", "Bosom of Abraham" or "Rocka My Soul", is a traditional African American spiritual. It was first documented by William Francis Allen, in the 1867 collection Slave Songs of the United States. Allen attributed the origin of the song to the state of Virginia and documented the following lyrics:
Rock o' my soul in de bosom of Abraham,
Rock o' my soul in de bosom of Abraham,
Rock o' my soul in de bosom of Abraham,
Lord, Rock o' my soul. (King Jesus)
One of the earliest recorded version was made in 1937 by the Heavenly Gospel Singers. Notable artists who have recorded the song include the Jordanaires, Louis Armstrong, Lonnie Donegan, Peter Paul & Mary and Elvis Presley.
Alvin Ailey made "Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham" the music for the triumphant finale of his internationally known choreography Revelations, which was born out of the choreographer's "blood memories" of his childhood in rural Texas and attending the Baptist Church with his mother. It was also performed as a tribute at his 1989 funeral at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Israeli dancer and choreographer Nadav Zelner used "Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham" as music for a clip for his student dance troupe.
FUN REACTION SEPH! LOVE YOUR JOY IN THIS ONE 💖💖💖💖
I'm catching up so my usual heaping pile of emojis is gonna be held back here 😀

His version isn’t much different than the original. He saw JD Sumner or The Statesmen or Blackwood Brothers as a teen. LINK: 1951 Bosom of Abraham-Blackwood’s th-cam.com/video/838dZJOF_0M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Pa5RWJwgwBj1nzdK. You should compare his version and the Blackwood Bros. “Swing Down Chariot”1951- They are almost identical!
