Legend Willie Nelson wrote it. He's pretty straight forward, like life. Even that ending makes complete sense. People who keep lying about their feelings and constantly discard lovers do end up that way at some point. Elvis usually kinda ho-hummed his way through this live but the band and Elvis really dig into this. And may I say, anytime you're reacting to the Nashville sessions masters without overdubs, you're usually in for a treat. Should have released most of these as recorded in studio back in the day.

Great, great Elvis song and so was your reaction. The ending of the song reveals that his asking about her new love was meant to remind her that eventually, she would lose that guy, too. Those that once doubted him, told him to stick to driving a truck, yep, they regretted it. Jealousy is thought of as such a petty emotion. We're all human. We've all felt it on some level no matter how small. But what separates the mature from the immature is knowing why you're feeling jealous after upon some self- reflection. Like say you have a friend who is really happy in their marriage and you're miserable in your marriage. You're jealous that your friend is so happy. You're not begrudging them their happiness. You don't at all like your friend's spouse like that. No, the feelings of jealousy stem from your own want of happiness in your own marriage. So what can you do to make a change for the better? Sometimes jealousy is not necessarily half as bad if we acknowledge it and unpack the reasons why we are feeling it and try to make some sort of positive change. Try to turn a negative into a positive. The people that are immature just act on the emotion of jealousy without thinking. And sometimes their actions are rather petty and at others sabotaging. Regarding your rant, that question is largely a reflection of the quality of one's relationship with one's ex. I've kept in touch and maintained a good relationship with most of my ex-bfs, meeting their subsequent partners and even socializing together. Asking about their current partner is about showing love and support for one's ex. Showing that you genuinely care about their happiness. Cultivating this type of positive post-relationship relationship with one's ex helps to preserve the cherished memories one had with one's ex.
@balovett You can stay friends depending on the reasons you decide to separate. However, most relationships end because of multiple lies and ugly betrayals.
If you split up on good terms then this is totally possible. It's when you split up because they slept with your father and took all your money. Thats when it becomes awkward haha
I'm not used to hearing the studio version, almost feels like a new song to me. He sang it live towards the end of many of the concerts though. Very good reaction, you really listen to the lyrics and point out the best parts.👌
This was a big hit by Billy Walker in the early 60s. He had 2 or 3 hit songs back then. The first well known song written by Willie Nelson. He didn’t have a hit record of his own until years later. People DO say lines like “how’s your new love?” Especially people in small towns where everyone knows each other. Willie Nelson still remembered how small towns worked, back then. Everyone knew him around town here, before he became a “big deal”.
1st comment: "Funny How Time Slips Away" is a song written by Willie Nelson and first recorded by country singer Billy Walker. Walker's version was issued as a single by Columbia Records in June 1961 and peaked at number 23 on the Hot C&W Sides chart.[2] The song has been featured in several live action films and television shows, such as in the first episode of the second season of AMC’s Better Call Saul and in the 2020 Netflix drama The Devil All the Time. Notable Covers list according to Wiki: 1961 - Jimmy Elledge released a version as a single on RCA Victor, peaking at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100.[3][4] His version, which was recorded on September 7, 1961, sold more than one million copies. 1962 - Arthur Alexander released a version on his country soul album You Better Move On. 1962 - Willie Nelson recorded his own version for his debut studio album ...And Then I Wrote (Liberty 3239). 1963 - Wanda Jackson released a version on Love Me Forever. 1963 - Johnny Tillotson released a version as a single on Cadence, peaking at number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100.[5] 1964 - Joe Hinton had a major crossover hit with his version, which went to number 1 on the Cash Box R&B chart and number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.[6] 1964 - Brenda Lee released a version on the album In The Mood For Love: Classic Ballads, an MCA Nashville compilation released in 1998 consisting of releases drawn from 11 different albums from 1961-1971.[7] 1966 - Georgie Fame released a version on his studio album Sweet Things.[8][9] 1970 - Elvis Presley covered the song on the album Elvis Country, recorded in RCA's Studio B in Nashville.[10] 1973 - Al Green released a version on his Call Me album, which reached number 10 on the Billboard pop albums chart and number 1 on the "Black albums" chart. 1974 - Bryan Ferry covered the song on his second solo album Another Time, Another Place. 1975 - Narvel Felts released a version that peaked at number 12 on the Hot Country Singles chart.[11] 1976 - Dorothy Moore released a version that reached number 7 on the soul charts and number 57 on the Hot 100.[12] 1982 - The Spinners recorded a version that peaked at number 43 on the soul chart and number 67 on the Hot 100.[13] 1994 - Al Green and Lyle Lovett released a version on the compilation album Rhythm, Country and Blues. You reacted to the unedited undubbed version. This to me is FAR superior to the edited and overdubbed Master Release. I LOVE Elvis's voice by itself on a track. It's Chef's 💋 Utter perfection 💎🎤💎👌 Further- from an Elvis article on the June 7/8 1970 Recording Sessions: After a slightly disappointing previous day, there were some top notch performances on June 7. Again the weakest tracks are those which found their way on 'Love Letters from Elvis'. Among these are a remake of Love Letters, which doesn't come close to matching Elvis' original recording from 1966. The standout track from this day was Tomorrow Never Comes, which builds to a dramatic Roy Orbison-style crescendo - Elvis can even be heard on an outtake jokingly singing the intro to Roy Orbison's Running Scared. Elvis also really delivers on Willie Nelson's Funny How Time Slips Away and Don Robertson's I Really Don't Want to Know. The latter provided Robertson with his first major success when it was recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. It was one of many Robertson compositions recorded by Elvis, including Anything That's Part Of You, There's Always Me, I Met Her Today and I'm Counting On You. The arrangement on It's Funny How Time Slips Away borrows from Ricky Nelson's 1966 version, which appeared on Ricky's great country rock album 'Country Fever'. Both versions feature James Burton's great work on dobro. Now I went ahead & listened to Ricky Nelson's version that is cited in the article. Technically yes. The arrangement on Elvis's track is borrowed from Ricky Nelson's earlier recording (1966). In my opinion, Elvis's version has a slightly faster tempo. Too in my very humble opinion I think that Elvis put a more mature interpretation into the lyrical content than Ricky Nelson did in his. (At one point Ricky Nelson sings, "Gee, ain't it funny how time slips away". That sounds... a bit dated to me. My Mom was eleven years old in 1966 and she never said the word "gee". Well now she does but only followed by a snort and laced with heavy sarcasm.) Anyways, here is the link to Ricky Nelson's version for anyone who would like to give it a listen: th-cam.com/video/bgowuQIwPaE/w-d-xo.html For me it's just a tad too slow and the lyrical interpretation is... Well not my cup of tea. To me it's just not on the same emotional maturity level that Elvis's is. I'll put it like that. Okay everyone NOW I am done. I welcome all opinions so no need to apologize for sharing yours if you so desire to 😊
@@joelschwartz4920 I could not tell you honestly. If that is so though that's pretty impressive. I believe it. Willie Nelson is a songwriting legend. I don't doubt he did write this one in ten minutes. I tried finding more info on the back story of the song. You would think there would be. But all of them pretty much said the same thing: That Willie Nelson wrote songs for Patsy Cline and that "even Elvis covered a song of his, "Funny How Time Slips Away". I do know that Willie Nelson spoke on a song that most think he wrote but he didn't and it is one he covered in 1982, ten years after Elvis had recorded his version of it 😉 Seph does not like spoilers too much. So I do try to refrain from mentioning songs he has yet to react to. Just A friendly FYI.
@@SephPlays Very true Seph. But also from a writer's standpoint: An anonymous poet said once: "Poetry is pain." In my opinion I don't see where there is much of a difference- if any- between writing lyrics for a song and writing verses of a poem. Just my two cents 😉
This is beautiful but Yes the live one '72 in Greensboro, North Carolina th-cam.com/video/UktTsMx7GlE/w-d-xo.html -- before starting the song he asks for the house lights to be turned up so he could see the audience -- & says there's a lot of people out there boy.
I love that live version. There is a sweetness to Elvis that shows as he sees all the people. For some reason, that video really touches me at how tender he was.
@@judyzeller3921 Sweetness describes it perfectly. He's looking & talking just like an everyday, ordinary person, not like some big shot singer w-attitude & "look at me how great I am." Re: this concert, have you seen him do "Release Me." I'm trying to figure out if at one point the audience is singing along with him. To me it sounds like they are but I'm not sure. It happens after he says "chug-a-lug baby." it's at th-cam.com/video/OJY5Lah-aEg/w-d-xo.html. Have you seen the '72 Hampton Roads one where @ very, very beginning he calls out "Please Release Me baby" but they began playing "I Can't Stop Loving You" & he throws water over onto Glen -- a fun, powerhouse performance. The problem w-the video is it doesn't always start @ very beginning so you have to back it up th-cam.com/video/LNtP5Gd8QGE/w-d-xo.html.

AND OH MY EFFING GAWD I CANNOT WAIT FOR YOU TO REACT TO ELVIS'S LIVE VERSION OF THIS! THE 1972 LIVE VERSION IS FANTASTIC! (Elvis was having a good time you could tell, really wonderful performance!)
Okay recording info will be in a separate comment & oh yes Seph, you are correct- James Burton on guitar. But Elvis Presley, Charlie Hodge & Chip Young are three other guitar players listed on the recording session logs 😉
TCB ⚡ & TLC ❤ & peace ✌& blessings 🙏 to you & yours & to one & all here as well 💕
Me, too. Makes me cry every time! My favorite song ❤
@@AlwaysEPDoris "Funny How Time Slips Away" is easily in my Top Three Favorite Elvis Songs 💖
1: If I Can Dream (makes me cry every time)
2: Long Black Limousine (makes me cry every time)
3: "Funny How Time Slips Away" (makes me cry every time)
4: (There'll Be) Peace In The Valley (For Me) (makes me cry every time)
You think maybe there's a pattern forming here?
(I'm making fun of myself 😂)
In fact Elvis is the only singer that can make me consistently cry. I'm not a cryer but Elvis touches me in a place I thought I never I had. Soul deep place.
Elvis's Gospel is the only Gospel I listen to consistently as well 🙏💕
@@Barbara-lb5yt Oh wow. I lost my Dad when I was 29. He was not quite 59 when he passed away.
Wow. Damn. I am so sorry for your loss 🙏
I know exactly what you are talking about. I felt the exact same way, had the exact same thoughts from time to time.
But ultimately my sister & I are very grateful for the Dad we had.
He knew when hard love was necessary & when a gentler kind of love was necessary.
Yep. I know all about what you are talking about.
On Elvis: You know I would have loved to find out for myself if he really did have lips as soft as marshmallows 😀
Those ladies that did get to find that out for themselves well 🎶Hot Dog🎶 I'll tell ya for sure they were damn lucky.
Uh- huh. If Elvis leaned in and he asked me if I wanted to play a little bit or get serious I'd be like, "How about we try out both and then I can give you a proper answer to your question." 😄
Oh my Lord if that actually happened I'd probably embarrass myself. Who am I kidding?
@@Barbara-lb5yt Awww thank you so much Miss Barbara 🙏
At 29 I had no thought of age. I just assumed I'd have my Dad until he was like old- old. Then you know one day he's gone and it's SO surreal. We saw each other every day. We were very close.
Yes definitely Miss Barbara taken away far too soon 🙏 yours & mine 💕

Regarding your rant, that question is largely a reflection of the quality of one's relationship with one's ex. I've kept in touch and maintained a good relationship with most of my ex-bfs, meeting their subsequent partners and even socializing together. Asking about their current partner is about showing love and support for one's ex. Showing that you genuinely care about their happiness. Cultivating this type of positive post-relationship relationship with one's ex helps to preserve the cherished memories one had with one's ex.
@balovett
You can stay friends depending on the reasons you decide to separate.
However, most relationships end because of multiple lies and ugly betrayals.
If you split up on good terms then this is totally possible.
It's when you split up because they slept with your father and took all your money. Thats when it becomes awkward haha
@@SephPlays I agree. Asking your exgf how your dad is doing is going to be awkward at best. And you should probably skip asking who was better in bed.

I'm not used to hearing the studio version, almost feels like a new song to me. He sang it live towards the end of many of the concerts though. Very good reaction, you really listen to the lyrics and point out the best parts.👌
One of my all time favourites. It's a double for me. But definitely not the best version.
He sang this in concerts.

Further- from an Elvis article on the June 7/8 1970 Recording Sessions:
After a slightly disappointing previous day, there were some top notch performances on June 7.
Well now she does but only followed by a snort and laced with heavy sarcasm.)
Anyways, here is the link to Ricky Nelson's version for anyone who would like to give it a listen: th-cam.com/video/bgowuQIwPaE/w-d-xo.html
For me it's just a tad too slow and the lyrical interpretation is... Well not my cup of tea. To me it's just not on the same emotional maturity level that Elvis's is.
I'll put it like that.
Okay everyone NOW I am done.
I welcome all opinions so no need to apologize for sharing yours if you so desire to 😊
I heard that Willie wrote this song in 10 minutes.
I do know that Willie Nelson spoke on a song that most think he wrote but he didn't and it is one he covered in 1982, ten years after Elvis had recorded his version of it 😉
Seph does not like spoilers too much. So I do try to refrain from mentioning songs he has yet to react to. Just A friendly FYI.
"Any plonker with a pen could write the words to a song, but it takes someone special to turn it into a banger!" -Seph
@@SephPlays Very true Seph. But also from a writer's standpoint: An anonymous poet said once: "Poetry is pain."
In my opinion I don't see where there is much of a difference- if any- between writing lyrics for a song and writing verses of a poem.
Just my two cents 😉

Elvis does this song excellently, But Ray Price gives him a run for the money. In third place is Billy Joe Royal.
