    The Lord’s Prayer
words from the King James bible
    music by Albert Hay Malotte
Our Father, which art in heaven,
    Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth
    As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
    And forgive us our debts
    As we forgive your debtors,
And leave us not in temptation,
    But deliver us from evil,
For Thine is the kingdom and the power
    And the glory, forever.
    Amen.
Song Info: "The Lord's Prayer" is a musical setting of the biblical Lord's Prayer, composed by Albert Hay Malotte in 1935, and recorded by many notable singers. According to his New York Times obituary: "Mr. Malotte's musical setting of 'The Lord's Prayer' was the first one that achieved popularity, although the prayer had been set to music many times before." Malotte dedicated the song to baritone John Charles Thomas, whose radio performances introduced it to the public.
Songwriter Info: Albert Hay Malotte (May 19, 1895 - November 16, 1964) was an American pianist, organist, composer and educator, best known for his musical setting of "The Lord's Prayer".
Malotte was the son of Charles and Katherine (Donavon) Malotte. He was in Boy Scouts of America Troop 1, the first Boy Scout troop in Philadelphia.[2] Malotte graduated from Tioga High School and sang at Saint James Episcopal Church in Philadelphia as a choir boy. He studied with Victor Herbert, W. S. Stansfield, and later in Paris with organist Georges Jacob. His career as an organist began in Chicago where he played for silent pictures, and he later concertized throughout the US and Europe.
During World War II he held the rank of captain in the Special Services for two years while he toured with the USO and entertained troops in New Guinea, Australia and Europe. At one point he sponsored his own troupe of entertainers that included Judith Anderson, Anne Triola and Helen McClure Preister. Malotte was an amateur pilot, avid golfer and even boxed with Jack Dempsey in Memphis, Tennessee. He spent most of his career as a composer in Hollywood.
Malotte married Marguerite Stevens Hester on August 23, 1946. His first wife, Elmina Todd, had died the previous year in Hollywood.
Malotte composed a number of film scores, including mostly uncredited music for animations from the Disney studios. Although two movies for which he composed scores won best Short Subject Academy Awards (Ferdinand the Bull in 1939 and The Ugly Duckling in 1940), he is best remembered for a setting of "The Lord's Prayer". Written in 1935, it was first recorded by baritone John Charles Thomas, and has remained popular in churches, concerts and recordings. Malotte composed a number of other religious pieces, including settings of the Beatitudes and of the Twenty-third Psalm which have also remained popular as solos. His secular songs, such as "Ferdinand the Bull" (from the Disney animated short of the same name), "For my mother" (a setting of a poem by 12-year-old Bobby Sutherland) and "I am proud to be an American" are less well remembered. Some of his works are collected in the library of the University of California Los Angeles and the Library of Congress.
In addition, Malotte wrote uncredited stock music for many other films in the 1930s and early 1940s, including twenty-two of Disney's Silly Symphonies and other shorts, among them Little Hiawatha and Ferdinand the Bull. He also composed cantatas, oratorios, musicals and ballets. Malotte owned Apple Valley Music.
One of his most odd compositions is "Fiesta en Purchena", a piece for piano composed in 1938 and published by G. Schirmer. Malotte wrote in the first page of the score why he composed this piece based on a historical event called Moorish Games (in Spanish: Juegos Moriscos) which happened in 1569 in Purchena, a small Spanish town to which he had never gone. This is the explanation:
FIESTA EN PURCHENA was suggested to me by the following quotation from Eleanor Hague's very interesting book Music in Ancient Arabia and Spain. In a chapter dealing with Moorish festivals, she relates that "The Moors who most vitally maintained their tradition were those of the kingdom of Granada, the last stronghold of Islamism in the peninsula." The most vivid pictures of the music festivals celebrated in the kingdom are to be found in the works of Ginés Pérez de Hita. As an example I give the following, which shows the subtlety, orderliness, and elegance of their artistic contests: "The plaza of Purchena was ready for the dances, with many carpets spread; all the important people were seated round about with Ibn Humeya on a dais, and lute and timbrel in place. Many Moorish youths, beautifully dressed, danced, one by one, marvelously well. Thereafter followed various cavaliers, dancing with lovely Moorish ladies."
There are no biographies or studies of Malotte's life and compositions in English, but there is a short one in Spanish published by Purchena's Town Council in 2013, with the institutional support of the United States Embassy in Spain, written by the musician Bartolomé Llorens Peset. This book, called Fiesta en Purchena: Los Juegos Moriscos de Aben Humeya en la obra del compositor estadounidense Albert Hay Malotte, also encloses a recording of "Fiesta in Purchena" performed by Tomeu Moll, a pianist from Valencia.
Malotte died of pneumonia in 1964 and is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills.
Elvis Recording Session Info: This was an impromptu performance during a longer recording session on May 16, 1971 at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee.
I'm pretty sure that is Elvis on the piano. Because when I did a little bit of research on this a credible source noted by "The Lord's Prayer" in the recording session book as follows: (Arranged by Presley).
Finally: "You didn't think I could do that, didjya?"- Elvis, right before laughing that laugh and going right back into the song. I agree with Miss Susy Q on her theory why Elvis laughed. I think that because of the criticism Elvis at times got throughout his life for not being a "real singer" Elvis joked about that. He joked about not being able to play the guitar as well.
Fun Fact: Elvis's favorite instrument to play at home for a time was that bass.
When Elvis went out to see this guy play bass that (I think James Burton mentioned) he took some friends with him and one of those friends was a woman (I forget her name admittedly).
So according to her Elvis at one point while watching the bass player leans in close to her and says, "Watch the bass player. He's always the coolest guy on stage."
Not too many know that Elvis loved the bass and used to his play his own at home.
I do think particularly in the later years Elvis loved the piano the most.
He had a piano in his music room, an organ in his office, another organ in the basement hallway, and yet another piano in his Racquetball Building. (This is all at Graceland by the way).
I think Elvis was so connected to music that he liked knowing some form of music was always near.
In the Jungle Room there was a hidden record player. He a record player in his bedroom and in his den/ tv room too. His record collection and his book collection were quite large. He had a very large music and literary personal library of sorts. (To put it one way).
    FABULOUS REACTION SEPH 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
    LOVED THIS SO MUCH 😍
I get it. You get so that you get protective of Elvis. I'm the same. Never thought I would ever be protective of a celebrity but Elvis was more than that. The more I learned about him the more I loved him.
    TCB ⚡ & TLC ❤ & peace ✌& blessings 🙏 to you & yours & to one & all here as well 💕

The "Lords Prayer "was composed by Albert Hay Malotte in 1935. I think the musicians were joking with him thinking he couldn't hit the high notes...and we know how Elvis liked to joke around too... yes he is playing the piano.

Seph, Elvis came from an era when songs were written for singers. He would find it odd to write his own songs since his job was to interpret songs. However, he was fully engaged in producing all of his music!

True prayer and song. We used to say or sing it in church every week. Sure wish we had had an Elvis in our church. I’d have gone more often. 😊😂😂❤❤. He played the piano a lot. There’s a rehearsal in 1970 that shows him playing to How the Web Was Woven. Professional musicians who have degrees in it say Elvis could have sung opera with formal training. But I’m glad he didn’t because his singing was his own and I’d rather see and hear passion when someone sings. He had soul which reached ours. To me that’s the greatest gift he left us. ❤❤😊😊

The Lord's Prayer is a real song. Elvis is having a bit of fun while doing it. Andrea Bocelli recorded it amongst many others. It is even sung in Catholic Mass. It is Jesus' prayer from the Sermon on the Mount put to music. It was also done by the Singing Nun in the 1970's I think. Elvis is using his operatic voice. Pavarotti thought Elvis could have done opera with training. I have no doubt of that. I love me some Elvis opera in addition to everything else. Elvis did operatic scales to strengthen his voice. Sounds like Elvis's piano playing as its mostly chords.❤❤

The words and music were arranged by Elvis. Elvis was on the piano. Elvis was 'something else' as we used to say. He was so multi-faceted in both personality and vocally. One minute he's being a 'goof ball' and the next he's singing with that beautiful, melodic voice of his. Fun reaction, Seph.

Three octaves baby. He was remarkable. I told you Mario Lanza said he would rather have had Elvis voice than his own. He also did this with O sole a Meo, and America the Beautiful. He did this at some rehearsals, imagine if he had trainer of any kind. He is the most natural talent of all time. He might have been playing piano he usually did these while at the piano. People won't listen, they think all he did was Hound Dog. So glad you listened to this, I have heard it, but great to revel in it again. Love ya Seph 😀 Mary🥰

I believe you're thinking of Pavarotti. Mario Lanza died in 1959 and I don't remember him ever mentioning Elvis. Pavarotti is the opera star who said he would love to have Elvis's voice and that Elvis could make an excellent opera singer.

Also in the beginning you will hear someone say, go down 4 Chords, meaning start it in a Lower Key, but Elvis just continued in the Higher Key.😆🫶❤️

You're right on multiple accounts Seph. One is that he could have had the ability write songs possibly. What is clear is that he was a good arranger at least. You unearthed a rare little gem here man, I've never run into this one before. You might run into his singing the Rosary song which is a full fledge song and it is quite impressive and beautiful too. But yeah, this one is improv and his voice hit a high note like Roy Orbison this time. I think it is the highest note that I've ever heard coming from "the Elvis". Top!

This is a prayer from the Bible-it is not just made up.
Two versions of this prayer are recorded in the gospels: a longer form within the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew, and a shorter form in the Gospel of Luke.
It was turned into a song with an operatic flavor and tone.
It has been recorded by Andrea Bocelli, Whitney Houston, Perry Como, Susan Boyle and many other artists.
Elvis never officially recorded this but this is superb version considering he was doing it on the spur of the moment.

This is actually the Lord's Prayer ver batum, from the bible. He didn't write this song, or rather, it was composed by someone using the exact words of Jesus from the gospel. In the Catholic church i believe rhe word Debts is interchangeable wirh the word Trespasses, which both get at the same thing❤

It's hard to believe that you have never heard the hymn, but what's more that you don't know the Bible well enough to realize that it's in the Gospels. The shorter version is in Luke 11:2 to 4. What he is singing is from Matthew 6:9 to 13
    "Our Father in heaven,
    hallowed be your name,
    your kingdom come,
    your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
    And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one. (NIV)

Seph, sorry but you're wrong! This IS an actual song. It's the actual Lord's prayer prayed by Jesus, recorded in the Bible, when He was teaching His disciples to pray. It was put to music many years ago. Elvis didn't make it up. It's just an impromptu goofing around performance. The wow! was because of Elvis' awesome ability to sing the inticate melody so precisely and with such amazing range and to do so almost acopella!

I still find it impressive because he put a melody to writing. Making a song out of nothing is very impressive to me

But what I'm saying is that he did not create the melody. It was created many years ago. The Lord's Prayer is a musical setting of the biblical Lord's Prayer, composed by Albert Hay Malotte in 1935, and recorded by many notable singers. Nevertheless, I agree with you that Elvis sang it amazingly!

The chuckle is to do with the line about forgiving your debts and forgiving our debtors and the guys are laughing as if one of them is owed money or joking someone owes them money...in the UK the prayer uses the word "trespass as we forgive those you trespass against us" in America it's debts.

In the Southern US it is “trespass”

Of course, he was capable of writing his own songs. However, he always felt self-conscious about his knowledge of the English language. He wasn't a top student and often struggled in school, so he didn't feel knowledgeable enough to write his own songs. He felt very uncomfortable around educated people who boasted about their knowledge of literature or other academic subjects. It wasn't intentional; people would discuss things from a professional point of view, and Elvis felt offended when he didn't know things he felt he should have known. It wasn't easy for him to accept that he had a lack of knowledge in certain areas because he wanted to excel in everything he did. The main reason he didn't write his own songs was his lack of self-confidence in respect of his formal education.
Elvis read a lot, wrote a lot, and he knew a lot.
Had he written his own songs, I am convinced, the world would have gained a lot of new gospel songs :)

Most people know this prayer. ''Thy kingdom come they will be done on Earth. But not really knowing what's meant by ''On Earth'' As it is in Heaven. Kingdom is another word for Government. That will replace the Governments we have today. ''On Earth.

Sounds like Elvis is playing the piano. I would never ever recommend a non Elvis fan to listen to this. That would be the last nail in the coffin for them I'm afraid. F-

It's not a made up song Seph. That is the exact prayer that Christ taught his disciples. It's in the Bible... Elvis never made up the tune either. He's just singing it in the wrong key, too high for a baritone. The Lord's Prayer has been sung in Evangelical churches and especially at funerals for decades. My mom played the organ in the church, she played the Lord's prayer (this tune he was singing) at many funerals since the 50's.

Frank Sinatra nor Whitney Houston wrote their own songs. I guess they don’t have talent neither! people who say that about Elvis don’t know anything about him!

The Lord’s Prayer was first recorded as a song in 1936 by John Charles Thomas. Even one of Elvis favourite opera singers, Mario Lanza released a version in 1951, as did Mahalia Jackson. According to my sources there are at least 111 recorded versions of this song.
