I am sure there are lost recordings waiting to be discovered. The original stories I remember hearing were only of the 1953 session and My Happiness (which was “found”). The additional recording sessions make more sense, leading up to the addition of Scotty and Bill and then “That’s All Right”. Thanks for this video!

One more thought about lost songs: In his book ‘Elvis-A life in Music’ (the bible of Elvis recordings and releases), E. Jorgensen writes that Elvis gave concerts totalling 3 x 45 minutes shortly after signing with RCA at the end of 1955 and played cover versions of ‘Rock around the Clock’ and ‘Only You’ (we know of songs such as ‘Fool, Fool, Fool’, ‘Hearts made of stone’, ‘Maybellene’, ‘Tweedle Dee’ - all live versions and released in recent years). The Sun material just wasn't enough for that. It is absolutely conceivable that Elvis recorded other contemporary songs at Sun, for whatever purpose. And yes, perhaps they were below standard and not suitable for release. But they did exist - maybe.
I agree that Sam Phillips couldn't have known how successful Elvis would be from 1956 onwards and so may have deleted tapes because he needed them for other purposes.

I may eventually be proven wrong, but I really doubt that after nearly 70 years there's anything from Elvis' Sun era (1954-55) that remains to be discovered. I honestly think any outtakes or studio chatter or unfinished stuff that hadn't already been released by the 1990s would've been issued in the years since.

When I looked in my Elvis sessionography and discography published around 1980 by Martin Hawkins, it states that in early 1954, he recorded Casual Love, and I'll Never Stand In Your Way. In the spring, he called Elvis back into the studio to record Without You. But the session went badly, and nothing came of it, which seems to imply that the latter was never recorded. But this was long before any of those acetates were released. INSIYW has since been released with three other demos, one of which was not even mentioned there.

Years ago when Sirius radio first started there was an Elvis channel, on some nights Elvis long time friend George Klein would DJ and have guests and trivia..one night on Elvis Birthday, they had Sam Philips on as a guest..he spoke about Elvis early recordings. He said initially Elvis didnt have his own sound, he could sing with a beautiful voice and imitate singers of that era down to a tee. Sun had hours and hours work of Elvis and the- Blue Moon boys (Scotty and Bill) doing song after song to try to find what might be unique. Sam said, Elvis loved Dean Martin..did a great copy of a song from a Martin and Lewis movie he saw calked "Sailors Polka" and had also "Joe Turners" Rocket 88, along with others, these where all recorded on acetate which was volitile and really expensive, he said sadly, that while trying to record newer songs they would use the acetate over and over a few times, which would destroy the songs sung underneath..he said, he did have hours and hours worth, which would have been worth millions, if he would have saved them, but who could have known then but he recalled many where fantastic renditions that the public would have liked

Thanks for sharing friend! That is interesting for Sam to say that about recording over and over on acetate. I don't think you can do that. Acetate is what would be considered the "master disc". You can't record over grooves that were already made. And I don't think he did that after he got his tape machine to record. Tape, you can record several times over, due to the erase head.

This idea is new to me, but not absurd. Especially because of the mention on the Sun Record website.
But beyond that, I think that there were certainly quite a few recordings from Elvis' Sun era that were simply “overlooked”, “forgotten”, “over-recorded” (Sam Phillips also used the same tapes several times). In the book ‘Elvis, A life in Music’, Ernst Jorgensen mentions a song that was ‘lost’ at Sun Record when it was "tidied up and thrown" away.
Yes, I am firmly convinced that there are more than the songs we know, but some will simply have been destroyed ... what a pity!

@@Beyond_Graceland Even if they were recorded Sam didn't think they were good enough to be released. At that time no one knew that Elvis got so big as he did, so since he was a nobody at that time, Sam didn't think it mattered. Also it could be recordings Elvis did for himself and took with him back home and they got lost somewhere. He moved twice after this, so those records can have gone lost in the moving. Maybe Elvis and Sam thought those two songs sounded "good on paper" but when they heard them they decided to trash them and come up with something better. Lastly there is also this possibility that they had mixed up the artist names and it's not even Elvis who recorded those songs. So we are looking in the wrong direction.

The answer is YES. Several songs, actually. I can't remember the exact details of the story but something like 19 tapes were shipped to RCA from Sun Studios. They are catalogued and documented however a few have gone missing and a few have been lost only to be found decades later. One tape was found in the drawer of an RCA-staffers desk in the late 1980's when the dude retired. Some tapes have never been found and a few songs exist as acetate discs only. The few acetates are: "I'll never stand in your way" and "It wouldn't be the same without you".
Of the 24 documented songs recorded at Sun, only 22 are known to exist. "I got a woman" and "Satisfied" are currently unaccounted for. What's interesting is that "Satisfied" comes from the September '54 session, where the other five songs recorded at that session still exist. "I got a woman" was recorded during the February '55 session so the odds of these two songs being on the same tape are improbable. So that means at least two tapes are missing.
    Other songs recorded at Sun:
"How do you think I feel?" was at the very least attempted at Sun. A tape exists of what is believed to be a rehearsal with Scotty's guitar quite loud and drums fairly quiet with Elvis off-mike.
This song was later recorded at RCA.
"Uncle Penn" was supposedly recorded during the September '54 session. One take is listed on a session sheet from that recording but since it was only a single take, it may have been recorded over.
"Oakie Boogie" One take from the December '54 session. Again, probably recorded over since only one take was recorded and may have been deemed unsatisfactory.
"Tennessee Saturday Night" Two takes during the July '54 Session. Documented on Session sheets and was slated for release on "Elvis for Everyone!" in 1965. No movement since. Tape is assumed lost.
"Give me more, more, more of your Kisses" shows up on the November '55 session sheets in name only. No takes noted. May have been attempted but not actually recorded.
If you ask me, I don't think Elvis recorded "Tiger Man" at Sun. I honestly think he's just mis-remembering or blurring two memories. I think he meant to say "Mystery Train" because even during the '68 Comeback Special; he does a song that starts out as "Mystery Train, blends into Tiger Man then back into Mystery Train".

@That_AMC_Guy What you say about him mixing up Tiger Man and Mystery Train could well be the truth.
Everything happened so fast to him after Sun that I'm sure it was hard for him to remember everything clearly.Elvis was known to be a little hazy on details.
The tape you mentioned was found in Steve Scholes desk Drawer after he retired...it contained the Harbour Lights recording released later on A Legendary Performer LP.
Then later again the tape containing When it Rains it Really Pours from his final Sun Session turned up in a mislabelled box in the RCA vault whilst they were searching for something else.
That recording was issued on another Legendary Perfomer LP.
Interestingly it was during that session that Sam received the phone call telling him the deal with RCA had been completed and Sam was forced to shut the session down...amazing stuff huh?

A few weeks later, a new statement appeared that said "the production standard was not good enough" and therefore would not be released. I want to add that, Elvis references one of these acetates in an early 1956 interview, and there is a really cool Magazine put out in 1956, all about Elvis, and the story of the acetate come up . and one more theory. Remember when Elvis said in 1969, "I came in to record a song, and guy put the record out"....well, elvis didn't have a good memory, but what if that third acetate is one of Elvis actually singing, "That's all right" with just him and his guitar. Obviously Sam didn't "put out" that acoustic version, (if one existed), but I don't discount anything as anything is possible. And one more thing...RCA has always been very secretive about Elvis' Sun era.....One more title, "tennessee Saturday night" which was a popular song at the time, and has been rumored to be on one of the Sun tapes, could be another one they are holding back. For years "Casual love (affair)" has been rumoured to be on the 2nd private acetate. However, since Elvis recorded covers for his private acetates, why can no song of that title by any artist be found recorded and released prior to January 4, 1954?
As for other titles mention being performed live or on radio and recorded, a bunch of tapes featuring these songs were badly damaged and could not be used anymore.
According to rumours Gary Pepper taped all of Elvis' performances on the "Louisiana Hayride" but destroyed the tapes when Elvis passed away. If true a real pity.
It is known Elvis recorded at home or at the home of a friend, like Eddie Fadall. Someone tricked Eddie Fadall into loaning out his tape and it appeared on the bootleg LP "Forever young, forever beautiful".

But the people who were keeping the archives they were pretty careless and they weren't in fully climate-controlled areas where the tape and the film reels when it disintegrates plus a lot of the more movie related things were that early type of film that can combust easily.

Would think that if Elvis paid for the January, 1954 recording session himself, he would have been given an acetate of the recordings. Think the song titles, "Casual Love Affair" and "Careless Love" are good song titles. Don't know if Sun/Sam Phillips also made or kept acetate recordings of people who paid for their own recording sessions. Even if he did, there's a good chance at some point the tapes of the recordings were recorded over, because recording tape was expensive. If an acetate or acetates of the two songs exists, hopefully it can be found either at Sun or at Graceland. Although, a number of years ago, a high school friend of Elvis's came forward with an acetate that Elvis had made at Sun, which he gave to his friend, and never asked for it back. Forget which song or songs were on this acetate. The way tapes are labeled (Often inaccurately or misleadingly), unknown songs are discovered occasionally. Several years ago, an alternate version of one of Elvis's early '60s movies songs was discovered on a tape owned by RCA or the movie studio that produced the movie. So there's always hope of finding something new!

He said I'm sorry I don't recall And let's not forget Harbor lights wich was released in 1976. Sam Phillips handed this tape over in 1955, but it was found back in the drawer of Steve Sholes his desk after he died in 1968. In 1967 Pyramid records announced the release of Elvis his uncle Penn recorded at the Louisiana Hayride. It was withdrawn at the last moment. It was stated by Dutch expert hans langbroek, that he heard a short fragment of the song over the phone, and said it was indeed Elvis. Rock around the clock acetate is in a private collection, but in very poor condition.
How about the rumour that Elvis was on television allready in 1955 in a show hosted by Roy Orbinson?
Sam Phillips is known for not keeping a file of recordings. He could indeed kept the recording of Casual Love Affair himself, or it could be in private hands, or maybe it was also in the drawer of the desk of Steve Sholes. What strikes me the most is that we still to this day never heard this song. There is also a possibility that the tape was indeed handed over to RCA in 1955, but got destroyed by the vault clean out in 1959 by RCA where thousands of tapes were destroyed to save storage space, and that Casual Love affair was destroyed with it. Let's not forget that there is not an original mastertape anymore of That's allright. They did use a needledrop of an original Sun single in mint condition for the Boy From Tupelo set. On the RCA album where the song was published we here the RCA reverb version.
Only time will tell if they ever find more lost Sun recordings, but we also need to be aware of the fact that people can also create new songs with AI technology, pretending it is Elvis. (Yes it is possible with this advanced technology.

Elvis, during later August 1970 Vegas show monologues (audience recorded) mentioned several times having recorded Tiger Man at Sun studio, as one of the first songs he ever recorded. He eventually recorded it as a loose funky jam in the studio much later in 1975. But as far as the early 50’s version: he said “but not to many got to hear it”. It was not a joke, because he repeated it in a serious manner during several shows, and he was consistent about it. It would make no sense to just make that up as a joke. The recording, if it exists, then surviving until today, is a very different matter altogether. But it isn’t impossible. Rufus Thomas’ version was great as well as all of Elvis’ live versions. How great would Elvis’ initial version would have been ?

Interesting video. I see the two following issues with the receipts: 1. Why is there not a copy of the My Happiness session receipt which would allow us to compare the other two receipts? If any of the three receipts survived in the Memphis Recording Studios archives, wouldn't it have been the one supporting the most famous recording story which Marion personally told so many times? The lack of this receipt does not prove the other two are fake, but its absence is conspicuous. 2. Why are there two different dates on both receipts? For instance, the Jan 4th receipt is dated Jan 6th. Elvis did record a second record on Jan 4th, but both the first time with My Happiness and on Jan 4th, Elvis walked out of Memphis Recording Studio with an acetate in his hands. Why would the receipt have been typed up two days later and marked "paid"? It is not as if the studio recorded the song, then transferred it to acetate for the customer to pick up two days later. The recording was directly to acetate and the customer, who paid in advance of the recording session, left the studio with the finished product, no later visits required. If I remember correctly, several years ago, the Spa Guy put out multiple videos tracking these acetates down, so you might visit his TH-cam page. My recollection is Elvis borrowed the money for the Jan 4th session from a co-worker (this was prior to Crown Electric) and left the acetate with this friend, who had a record player at his home where they traveled to listen to the record after the session and Elvis was dissatisfied with how he sounded, so he never re-collected the acetate from this friend. I believe this story was also related in a book by Bill Burk, which I think was titled The Memphis Years, but I cannot remember for certain. Supporting this story is the fact Elvis, Gladys, and Vernon did not own a record player at their home at Alabama Ave, so the first time Elvis brought home a copy of "That's Alright", he borrowed the record player of the Jewish family who lived upstairs. The mother of the family told Elvis he could borrow the player all summer as they were leaving for vacation. She also is the person who bought Elvis his first set of cuff links, which she gave him as a high school graduation present in June 1953. This family also owned the phone which took the call from Dewey Phillips the night he spun That's Alright over and over and interviewed Elvis on air because the Presley's did not own a phone (nor did they own a phone at their next house where Vernon walked into the neighbor's house so many times to use their phone, the neighbor put a lock on the screen door).

@@manlystranger4973 awesome stuff here! I wish there was a way to authenticate the receipts. As for the different dates, this could actually be because the recording would need to be “cut” or transferred to an acetate record. I did read that once Sam got his tape machine (1951) that he wouldn’t record straight to acetate. Which would be much better for him since you can’t re-record on acetate like you can tape. So one date would be the recording day and the second when the artist picked up the cut acetate.

I must say, some of the spa guy's stories are interesting but some have been proven to be innaccurate. Also, the story about the classmate who held on to the record for decades has many holes in it. I think the two dates do indicate that one day was the day he recorded the songs, and the other was the day he walked out with the record. I don't think there is any other way to explain that one. If one was going to fake these reciepts, they wouldn't put two dates. Also, some one also made the comment that is one is going to make a fake reciept why choose a date that hasn't been tied to specific Elvis recording titles.

Sam was a con man and a obvious liar, often telling stories to put himself in a good light.
    E. G new car for Carl perkins for being the first sun artist to sell a million copies, when Carl got his royalty check there was a deduction for the car, he paid for it himself, and later sued Sam for unpaid royalties.
So it's highly likely Sam kept hold of some of Elvis's sun recordings.
Probably thinking that if he fell on hard times he could get a 3rd party label to release them claiming they were private recordings etc.
But that never happened so it's likely they've been lost to time or are sitting in a wooden crate in a storeroom, and nobody knows.
