Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 1,000,000 subscribers on TH-cam. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.
As an adopted person, I’m here to say there is nothing wrong with wanting your own biological child. Wishing you both great success. ❤
I am not adopted but I do agree. I don't think everyone is cut out for adopting a child either. Some people just aren't meant for it and some aren't meant to have children at all. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with either. Everyone's story is different 💜💚
I grew up in foster care but consider my foster family my family. I agree. Its fine for people to not want to adopt at first because yeah there is the closer attachment of having a biological child. However I believe its fine to do both. if u can afford it I personally believe u should have both biological and adopted kids because theres WAY too many children waiting for homes.
I have one biological and two adopted.
We have 4 bio and 1 adopted and there is no difference in attachment. We love them all the same! I understand wanting your own bio kids. Good luck! ❤
@David FItzpatrick , there's nothing wrong with wanting a biological child, but my personal opinion is that, if you can't love a baby who needs a family, maybe you shouldn't be a parent period. I just don't see how anyone could not love any baby. Just my opinion.

I went through IVF 22 years ago and got pregnant with twins on the first try. They put two embryos in and they were planning on doing three but changed there minds the day we showed up for the transfer. I thank God for that because it would have been a high risk to take. I had healthy twin girls who are now 21! Good luck you two. I will say many prayers for you!! 🙏

I find this to an exceptional story of love unconditionally. Shane seems like a great guy with an exceptional attitude about his journey. Hannah also seems like a great woman I am a skeptical person normally but this filled my heart with happiness.
Our first round of IVF was supposed to start yesterday. It got pushed back till next cycle because of something with the lab. We are bumming hard about having to wait another month, but it’ll be so cool to get to follow along with another couple’s process that’s unfolding in real time with ours! Good luck! 🍍

I was adopted at 16months, and I totally understand why people want their own biological children! I also think that it can be wonderful to do both (IVF and adoption)to grow your family larger! I hope that there’s a lot of people out there who are open to both ways, because there sure are a lot of babies in need of families to love them!❤

I’m so so so thrilled for you guys!!!!! I’m curious how Hannah’s caretaking abilities will have to adjust and how/if you’ve planned for additional help when she will not longer be able to do actions like lifting Shane, etc. ❤

Never say never.. we were also told our ICSI would be vital to getting pregnant, and we'd be lucky if it even worked given DH sperm samples and medication he needed.
Our first blastocyst cycle lead to our daughter..I heard the shock in the nurses voice when i told her i had a positive test, they had no confidence at all, but luckily we did!
11months later i was pregnant without help, at 39 yrs old, my first normal cycle and while still breastfeeding on demand around the clock. In fact my first clue to being pregnant was our daughter suddenly waking up 3 times during the night again because my milk supply plummeted.
Needless to say once our second daughter was born we had to start using birth control for the first time in our relationship, was very weird. lol
We went through thousands of $$$ in treatments & 2 surgeries over 4 years to have our first child. After all that, the second child was completely natural & almost without trying. Both are SO worth it!!!! You'll be terrific parents! Great success & blessings to you in this journey!!!

Always hear of couples trying for so long and spending so much and then give up..... And then it happens! Since 19/20 Yr old I've know it will be hard for me (pcos) wanted kids for as long as I can remember! But the ONE TIME in my life that I thought would not be a good time to get pregnant was the only time I've had it happen! (ectopic 😩)

My brother and sister in law went through 5 rounds of IVF before she got pregnant. The awesome part was they ended up having twins, one girl and one boy!! Praying for you guys!!

It’s a process that hits you from all angles but I promise you that you will grow immensely in this process. Stay focused on each other. Make a point to find the laughter in the struggle. Don’t stop communicating. Love each other thru every step. You will get there one way or another. Lots of love 🙏🏽♥️✨
My 1st grandchild is due in July. My daughter did great with the IVF process. It was hard at times but so worth it. All the best to you.

I just finished my first IVF cycle and I’m having my frozen embryo transfer and of March!! It’s a lot lot lot, but just take it one phase at a time! You guys are a great support system for each other! And really I don’t think the stim shots were that bad! It’s all so cool and science-y so I kind of liked it! Best of luck!!! 💗💗💗💗💗

I did IVF and we had to do it 3 different times so don’t get discouraged. I’d suggest too implant as many eggs that you can for a better chance to conceive. We did 5 eggs and got twins..
The 3 times was a charm and we ended up with twins a boy and a girl so you could have the same results. Praying for you guys. If you have any questions please ask ❤
It's no longer considered ethical for a doctor to implant more than 2-3 as the risk of very serious complications is so high with multiple births. Most places will not allow a doctor to do that.
Here in Canada, they implant one embryo at a time, except when you are 35 or older, or if you have a particular condition…
Very true. I’m 35, and my only option is to implant two embryos at once, and they don’t even want to do that. However they will because of my age. But I really had to push for it. There is no doctor that would ever do that anymore. But glad it worked out for you!
Here in Australia the bulk billing clinics only allow one embryo implanted at a time, even if you’re over age 38. Private clinics allow up to 2 embryos. Commercial surrogacy is also banned. We got lucky and conceived naturally 8 months before I turned 40 after being recommended IVF ☺️

Good luck through this whole process. Love each other and support each other. It can be very stressful. Both of my boys are IVF with IUI for unexplained infertility. Plan fun things and enjoy life during the process. The road can be long.

I have 6 year old IVF twins. When I went back to transfer again I opted to only put one back. Twins pregnancy was hard on my body. I developed PPCM, I have recovered. Good luck to you both.

I have triplets via IVF and we transferred 2 embryos. Turns out they’re definitely fraternal so we conceived naturally during our IVF cycle. I’m here to say - I’m so so lucky to have triplets, they’re the best.

Heard from healthcare professionals, as an RN, that IVF carries an increased risk of Ovarian Cancer for the recipient in their future...might be worth checking into. Regardless, wishing you the best of success and health in your journey for a child.
While I've never gone through IVF, I have to give myself subcutaneous shots regularly, so I hope I can be helpful. I was really scared of giving myself a shot at first (I have a choice of my abdomen or thighs, but I do abdomen for personal anatomy reasons), but now that I've gotten the hang of it, it's SO much less scary. It's almost like the idea of it is worse than the actual shots. If you keep telling yourself that it will be quick, will get easier with practice, and most importantly WHY you're doing it, it really helps you get through! Many hugs!

My friend did surrogacy and the parents she carried for opted to implant three embryos with the hope of getting one or maybe two babies. Lo and behold, all three survived so she got to experience a triplet pregnancy! She was told the chances of that being the outcome would be very small but she did great and it was such a cool experience to witness from the outside.

Good luck guys! I’m in the midst of IVF myself. I will say at least for me, the shots part is not as bad as you might build it up to be. Just try to clear your schedule as much as possible and take it easy. That part goes by fast. Also one thing you have going for you is Hannah is super young so you have plenty of time to do more rounds if needed. ❤
