    I played Elite on my C64 back in 1985-86. I would find an ag planet with a stable government and a tech planet within range with a stable government then shuttle between the two selling food etc to the tech world and computers/tech to the ag planet. I did this for months (!!) and built up a sizable fortune of several million credits. I maxxed out the Cobra 3 with beam lasers , military shields and hyperdrive etc. Then I gave up trading and sought out anarchy systems and became a bounty hunter. I made it to Elite, but it took a long time. Right On Commander.

      I did the same, back in the 80s. Original breadbin C64 with the datasette :D .... I restarted a few months ago on VICE. It is not the same feeling, but still. So I've started looking for a used C64

    I spent many (read 'many' exponentially) hours playing Elite in the 80's and 90's. Now I play the open source version "Oolite". Has a multitude of expansion packs available to enhance the game play and make it more challenging.

    OH WOW!! Just discovered your channel! I used to play Elite for endless hours when I was around 10-12 years old. Had so much fun :D
    I figured out a neat trick when I used to play that game on the C64. I used to put a little AM radio next to the C64 and tune it to a certain channel (don't remember which one) and I could pick up the sound the C64 was playing via radio wave. I would then plug an earphone output wire from the AM radio to an old tube amp and crank the audio up to MASSIVE LEVELS to my parents irritation LOL!!
    These days I play "Elite: Dangerous" to relive my childhood ELITE memories ... good game .. pretty true to the old Elite philosophy :D There's even a "LAVE RADIO" podcast that I tune into from time to time

    One of the few games that the ZX Spectrum could show up the C64's limitations, because the ZX Spectrum's higher CPU clock speed was simply faster at drawing these kind of vector graphics.

    • @Lucasrainford
      @Lucasrainford 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True, I believe the BBC was the best version

    • @bonzobanana1
      @bonzobanana1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I couldn't get into the C64 version of Elite as it was so sluggish and the flickery vectors got on my nerves. Not a game that can utilise the hardware sprites or scrolling features of the C64 so it just became irritating to play if you had played other versions. In contrast if you ever play the BBC tube version on a BBC master that is the complete opposite with ridiculously fast gameplay and not a chance of winning in combat. The standard BBC master version is the best version I guess. Worst versions for me were the Apple II and MSX.

    • @Lucasrainford
      @Lucasrainford 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bonzobanana1 I played the C64 version for days on end, then later on the Amiga. The best version I saw around that time was the Acorn Archimedes.

    • @bonzobanana1
      @bonzobanana1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Lucasrainford I seem to think of Elite as the vector versions and the polygon versions and yes the Archimedes version is the best of the polygon versions. I played quite a lot on the NES version too. I always enjoyed playing different versions. It was my favourite game for many years.

    • @Jooeffoh
      @Jooeffoh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was due to the Zilog Z80 cpu having superior 16 bit math calculations, which were so much faster than the 6502 cpu. More an inherant feature of the cpu than just outright clock speed.
      I owned both the 48k spectrum and C64 back in the early days and found the C64 version of elite unplayable. They had tried to relieve the strain on the C64 by cutting out how many times it drew on screen 3D images and it caused terrible flickering.

    I am not a gamer but it is obvious that this is a very well thought out game and you show how involving it is after all these years. @@RetroRecipes you dont need to cheat , you can do this. consider PT1 a warm up, regroup your efforts.
      GOLDEN RULES (( based of playing the best imo, Rainbird PC Version) although oolite is the best modern ish classic version of elite imo) The PC version is best played with a smaller analog square block style joystick held in the left palm with its pencil like shaft, with sprung return centering, held between the thumb and the forefinger of the right hand) similar to the PC IBM style joystick search for a CH products analog joystick or Kraft III harder to find now but still on ebay, if you can play the rainbird PC version. is there a version of the konix speedking that works on the C64?
      Rules for any classic elite verison
      1: never to go to any dangerous systems to begin with anarchy etc ever imagine they are effectively just no go signs on your map, riedequat is SUICIDAL early on? until you have like millitary shields and lasers etc only initially go to safe systems until you have built up, this game punishes you for mistakes like that. there is no getting round it early on.
      2: trade always between tech to Agri then back agri to tech, when you find a profitable safe trade route keep exploiting it? especially a short trade route?
      3: Never fight in the early part of the game unless you have to, try and run away toward the planet and roll and pitch about a bit & weave, whilst keeping the planet roughly ahead of you, circle it around the center of the compass, making it harder for them to get a hit on you, as you try and push the enemy ships of the rear of your radar closest to the bottom of the screen, sometimes you can rotate your ship to facilitate that a bit quicker when running, if you cant run away and your not in range of the safe S space station and your in a safe system, and there harming you then use the missiles or lasers in combat, even your experience of ramming them slightly off screen is viable, if shields are full, and if death happens, return to the last save. if you have spare fuel after the jump and are in trouble you might be able ships dependent to jump to another in range system to escape.
      4: most importantly make sure your save capability actually works? ;)
      5: buy a docking computer as soon as you can afford it, saves allot of grief, and gets you the lovely blue danube.
      6: run and gun , > if this version of elite enables you to install a laser on the rear view at some point then run for the planet whilst weaving a bit and firing at those craft behind you if feasible.
      7: Never get into combat with Thargoids (the tough polygonal bottle caps that killed you) if you can help it, they are deadly, missiles and lasers wont help much, staying away from dangerous systems, will help with that. anarchy systems are almost certain death early on.
      8: only when you have upgraded the ship loads, at a high technology station can you really afford to branch out play wise and take on harder stuff combat role & anarchy systems etc.
      9 when aligning for space station entry get real close to the entry side of the space station first, before turning to the planet center & doing your 10-15s alignment burn toward the planet to align with the space station tighter and cleaner.
      10 When you are maintaining good alignment with letterbox slot you dont want to go too slowly towards the end, as the slot will be rotating out of view and and knacker you, you want to shoot into the frame faster when alignment is good ie speed up. but there is knack to it, which by the time you master it, you can probably afford the docking computer
      11 in combat always constantly rotate align the enemy craft so their direction of travel is roughly up the screen and then just keep tugging them down with the joystick back to the central crosshair position to fire, preferably with them running away from you, if there heading toward you, sometimes its worth speeding up to shoot past them fast, then slowing down quickish and turning 180 to get on their tail and firing on them, in the first pc version they all have flight patterns that can be mastered combat wise.

      @@beingatliberty and you edited that? Hm. Anyway, i played it on my Schneider 464 (amstrad :) and there the docking was easy to figure out, aiming at the rotation axis of the space station.

    The feat of writing Elite was even more remarkable than fitting in 64 KB of memory. On the BBC micro it fitted into just 32 KB (and also played some serious tricks with the video chip on that computer). Indeed, the actual code occupied just 22 KB. The rest of the other 10 KB of RAM was for all the other functions of the computer including the video memory.

      It also wasn't randomly generated, it was pseudo-random by Fibonacci sequence so the same planets are in the same place every time you play. Francis Spufford wrote a chapter on it in his history of British ingenuity, Backroom Boys, which is a book I'd recommend.

    The only version where the trimbles clog up your engines and obscure your screens if you buy them as cargo, I remember. That was the Targ at 41:00-43:00 that can trap you in 'witch space' when you hyperspace and ambush you, hopefully you have enough fuel to jump again if you survive the fight otherwise load an old game. Life ain't fair.

    Made me chuckle, I remember many lost ships for similar reasons back in the day. Think your save didn't work because you cannot overwrite an existing file on disk. That Thargoid (alien) earlier cannot be destroyed with the energy bomb, but it's thargons (drones) can. Roll on part 2!

    Dogs make great copilots for airplanes but not for a space ship. They keep wanting to open the window to hang out with their tongues flapping in the vacuum.
    This is an interesting looking game. I never had this one though, and was never any good at inventory management games so it’s just as well. The closest I have is Echelon from Access Software. It’s also a 3D wireframe space game, set on the “10th planet”, but the 3D rendering is far slower than this game. With stuff on the screen it’s as slow as Flight Simulator II.

    The C64, whilst for gaming superior than other 8 bits at the time in many ways, had a slower 6502 processor than the BBC. This meant that plotting vectors was considerably slower. The ZX Spectrum's version was faster than the C64, and some argue the best version. Still a great game either way.

    The line flickering is to reduce the amount of time clearing the screen, setting all the pixels back to black each frame would be too slow. Instead as each line is redrawn its previous position is drawn over in black first and then its new position is rendered in white. There wasn't enough memory for double buffering where the next frame is rendered off screen before being swapped on to the display.

    Once you get a military laser front and rear, ecm system for incoming missiles and fuel scoops for picking off enemy cargo then it gets way more fun. The short cut is to edit the save file for a million credits. Then go and take on the Thargons in Witch space.

    • @florkgagga

      I used asteroid lasers, probably was too lazy to figure out how to get around the overheating of the military ones. A-lasers took maybe 10% more time (and half the number of hits) and then you just keep shooting, that is, if you get attacked by 3-4 at the same time, probably in anarchy systems.

    Your two biggest mistakes were going to Anarchy planets and sitting still while under attack. Avoid Anarchy worlds until you get better and have better weapons, and never sit still during a fight. Also, you bought food and then kept going to agricultural worlds. Take food to industrial worlds!
    General starting advice for Elite; Buy as much food as you can carry and take it to a safe industrial world. Buy as many computers as you can afford and take them to an agricultural world. When you can afford it, start buying furs from the agro worlds and selling then to the industrial ones. The best combination is a poor agricultural and rich industrial. Always try to have a full hold.
    When buying upgrades, do so in roughly this order (while leaving yourself enough money for buying cargo);
    Docking computer - No more manual docking required.
    Extended cargo bay - The more cargo you can carry, the more you can make on each trip.
    Mining laser - It's better than the pulse laser.
    Extra energy unit - Makes shields recharge faster. May want this before the laser upgrade.
    Fuel scoop - Free fuel from the sun and ability to scoop up cargo from destroyed ships (don't try it with a full hold).
    Beam laser - Better than the mining laser.
    Military laser - The best one!
    Military laser - Rear mounting. Shoot enemies while running away. Note: to make rear aiming easier, pause the game and press "J" to reverse the joystick controls. You can then aim the rear laser the same as the front. Remember to switch them back for the front view.
    Don't bother with side lasers, they're impractical to use in combat. They might be OK for mining asteroids and scooping up the chunks, but that pays so little that it's not worth doing.
    Also, if you pause the game and press "P" it will add some lines to the planets to simulate rotation and make them look 3D.
    BTW, that 8-sided ship you encountered that wasn't destroyed by your energy bombs was a Thargoid. They're the big bad alien species of Elite. To be honest, I NEVER saw one in normal space. I only ever saw them when the drive malfunctioned during a hyperspace jump and you get stranded in a void with them until your drive repairs itself and you can jump out. Even with military lasers, it's no picnic to fight them, and they can release drones to attack you as well. That said, I did once manage to destroy one with only the pulse laser. I might have had a rear one too. I'm not sure now.
    Half the fun of Elite is the combat. By just using the energy bomb all the time, you're avoiding one of the things that made the game popular.
