Nothing about the Squats has really caught my interest yet, but I am really excited to see how the community kitbashes and paints them up. I think they're going to have a lot more potential than we're seeing now

Not even tech-dwarves. They lack complexity and rheir color choice so far is ver bland. No strong contrast and no comittment to a clear tone or theme

I hear you about the sentinel, in two minds about it as there's nothing really wrong with the old one. I'm still hoping there's a (remember the elysian) drop sentinel option available because good lord tempestus need a heavier unit but I'm holding my breath given the wording of the article.
I like the new sentinel, but at the same time the original one is iconic in its own right and I really don't want to see it go. It'd be great if GW could just keep selling the old one alongside the new one, but I don't really expect them to do that.
Hey Jay, I'd suggest checking out Marco Frisoni's videos on oil. Particularly where he mixes the use of acrylic and oil which I tried and found to be easy. Basically doing a "thick on thin" style of painting where the oil (thicc!) is applied over an acrylic base (thin) which I think is easier than "thick on thick." That said I respect wanting to use oil exclusively to better understand the medium.
Tip about oil painting. Thick over thin. Each blend layer should go thicker and thicker and that way they can overtake the thin lower layers. Example, parchment. wash of brown, layer paint thickness of 50/50. And last layer, is straight out of the tube white. Tip #2. Have many brushes, I use size 0 and 1 round brush for application of paint and edge highlights, and a filbert 0 and 1 for blending (that brushes doesent touch the thinner) Great resources are Marco Frisoni, James Wappel and Dmitry Fesechko.
I watched another painter a few weeks ago. They used a mix of oils and acrylics. They used the oils for the larger areas, since it blends for highlights and lowlights. Once dried, they used the acrylics for dry brushing, acrylic only effects (rust, blood, dirt, dust, scratches, etc.) and the metallic highlights.
The Robot Kin is almost identical to the black stone fortress imperial robot. Very in keeping with Men of Iron. The line about them being programmed to “want to be helpful” is clearly a jab at Star Wars droids.
Plastic injection molds have softer detail because the plastic is still pretty thick when it melts. The surface cannot bend sharply enough or flow into fine details. Yes, draft does also effect the quality, but not in sharpeness of details. Siocast, which is plastic, has sharper details because it is the viscosity of water when it is melted.
The blue gargoyles are very striking - nicely done! Instead of "made for miniatures/hobby paint", buy artist or professional grade paint oil paint. Blick Art Supply has several superb brands and a few student/"cheapy". (Typically, the difference is that the cheaper paint has more oil, fillers, and more coarse pigments. Even with very high grade paint, I tend to leech oil overnight before using the paint to help facilitate drying.)
the proteus difference is that the FW proteus doesnt have the option for the hull mounted weapon - the armored proteus kit from FW has the option for the hull mounted weapon. rules wise, that option is available to any proteus - the new kit likely has the option to not run it as well.

The design of that Proteus is definitely intended to mimic the original Rogue Trader era landraider, which had the same dozerblade and heavy machinery in the front.
Just like the rhino for HH, which harks back to gws very first plastic vehicle kit, back in 1988! It has some aspects of the newer mk2 type though such as exhaust and sides, but the round doors are classic mk1.
Painting with oil paints. I just learned recently that the difference between cheap and expensive oil paints is massive! Us a fast dry medium, not white spirit. Halves the drying time. And at last, it is much better to do the highlight color first. Let it try. Base color on top and use a cutip with white spirit to make the highlights.
I like the new design for the Sentinel but, just as I know the sky is blue, I know it will be more expensive than the current one. I have one that I haven't built yet that I'm saving for a Steel Legion group, so I'll also be picking up a few of the classic Sentinel before it goes away.
So bland Malifeux minis that look exactly like 40K/Sigmar minis are amazing, but new, highly detailed 40K minis for a brand new faction are boring? Sorry Jay, not following the logic there
I like the new sentinel model mainly because I don’t have any of the old ones. The creed model has a weird head. For a newer model the face seems like a throwback, lacking detail and weird eyes. Kasrkin are always awesome.
Dude, oils are fun. A lot of people are hating on the Ursula Creed model and I don't get it, she looks like her father's daughter, should be fun to paint too.
Hey Jan, from what I know about Oils they are actually much more robust than acrylics! For example, oil paintings have survived for hundreds of years. Maybe after 400 years they might fade a little but they'll be fine for a lifetime of gaming!

Oh, I'll definitely get some Kasrkin for an Inquisitorial hitsquad for Necromunda and maybe a Scions Kill Team. They also just look better than the Scions by a mile; I always found them too well geared for their meh statline, while Kasrkin look like what they are supposed to be: better Guardsmen. As for the ro-butt, eh, I might get one to proxy as the big mining suit the Squat gang will be getting for 'munda.
The only things I don’t like about the last two squat reveal is all the pouches and backpacks and so on. I liked the clean simple look of the Hearthkyn.

Not sure if it's true of painting miniatures as this is something I read about in the canvas art space (recently I was doing research for my first oil washes) but apparently painting acrylic on top of oils can cause the paint layer to become damaged? Might be worth testing out if you're going to combine oil and acrylic on the same mini Might be that any oil layer needs a layer of varnish over the top before throwing acrylic on there? I have no idea oils are cool though
i feel like "kin are kin" thing is that the robots DO think and act differently from flesh squats, but in terms of how the society treats them it treats squats and robot the same, neither is above the other in terms of heirarchy they are just different
I'm not a fan of the LoV robot, but I love the look of the Kastelans, but i'm not a fan of mechanicus. So luckily, since i'm not a gamer, I just enjoy building armies and painting for my own personal fun and amusment, I think i'm gonna pick up some Kastelans, but paint them to fit the squats i'm going to get. In my head cannon, i'll just have to pretend that Kastelans are Iron Kin and since it's just for me, no one will complain about it.
Am a bit on the fence about the new sentinel. Firstly it looks cool and i do love the idea of a sentinel Mk2. On the other it looks like it has just gotten armiger legs and a dune crawler vision slot. I liked the multiple armoured windows of the old kit.
The best leaks I've ever seen was the Slave to Darkness battletome from a few months back. The battletome is definitely finished, but we won't get it till December or early next year
Quite a number of models and codex/battle tome are supposedly finished, theyre just waiting for the slot for release and with some items waiting for the lore/books to get to a certain point. Bearing in mind they suffered about 2 years of release slippage, there's probably plenty to come in the next 12 months. Of course 10th edition will probably release in 2024 or 2025 as the delays make it harder to justify launching next year when the typical 3 year cycle comes around.
From the looks of some Spartan unboxing videos, the proteus seems to be a hull change to the Spartan. Same tracks and general hull but modified front and fewer las cannons on the sponsons. In general the kits seem a to use a lot of common sprues. This might be GW working on being efficient with a less popular game systems to save on production costs but being extremely smart about it. Still, I’m sure loads of 40K players will pick up these kits for chapter relics so GW will still rake in the £££s.
This is going to earn me to boos, but people's pre-occupation with oils, or wet-blending before that, is not doing as much to improve people's paintjobs as they think. Blending is optional, it's a style choice. If your minis isn't looking great without blending, it isn't going to look much better with blending. It's like people are building a house on top of a foundation of sand.
@@qwer9676 a good foundation, unblended, looks better than a shoddy one blended. Putting shadows and highlights in the right spot for the style you are painting has a greater impact than blending. Look a John Singer Sargent's work: no one is complaining that he should blend more.
@@TylerProvick I never said blending will automatically make your miniature a masterpiece but just saying it can improve what most people are painting. You’re making it seem like blending doesn’t help much. The difference between a good painted miniature with poor blending and one with amazing blending can be pretty big, can the poorly blended one be good? yeah but blending could make it look much better for miniatures.

The land raider image is from the new libre books it was in the heretic one I believe. A specific youtube channel went through each legion in its own video and the emperors children had the land raider.
I think Creed Jr. looks great, I just think its dumb that GW made her Creeds daughter. Millions of Cadians exist, I think it cheapens the scale of the universe. Could of just been any gruff old lady veteran Kasrkin look good, but nothing spectacular. I prefer the Scions. I do hope we get plastic Krieg Grenadiers. The new Sentinel looks pretty sweet, I just dont know why GW chose to update that models as the old one was perfectly serviceable.
Moulds could have been damaged or worn out, which would push gw to renew it sooner than others. When they can no longer reliably get consistent sprues from the tooling they pretty much have 2 choices, retirement or replacement. Some items will get retirement as theyll look at historical kit sale information I'd imagine to decide if new tooling is worth it, given that each sprue can cost anywhere up to £100k+ it is a very important decision to get right, even for gw.
The kasrkin shouldn't step on the toes of the scions. Kasrkin are elite guardsmen scions are a sperate specialist unit. Although there is a bit of cross over hobby wise. But guard players love choice and kasrkins go with cadian models really well.
The speculation about GW leaking on purpose is just speculation , i talked with Melcor a frznch painter which work at GW and these leak bother them so much, they improved security these days but it s not egnought, and it force them to reveal thibg early in their shedule.

And leaking don t give them any advantage. a poor quality leak just ruin the wow effect of the reveal trailer they work on.

New models are cool but they lack character. But to be fair the old Creed was one of the best they’ve ever made so it was gonna be hard to match up to!
Creed was pokeball captured by Trazyn as the planet was exploding. Overall I think the new Ursulla Creed looks fine but I just wish they would make new characters. I feel like they aren't sure how she would do by herself so they have added on that she is Creed's daughter to make her more accepted by the fanbase. I don't like when companies do that, if you have a new character then make them all their own.
Ok...looking at the LoV robot vs the Castellan....the Castellan is definitely going to be kitbashed into the LoV robot for some people's armies. Also every time you say Squats I'm slightly sad since they are only Necromunda and 40k gets....whatever LoV are (they're fine I guess....but they aren't the Space Dwarves I had hoped for).
Im seeing the best way forward is lots of kitbashing with the AOS steampunk dwarves and the kin. Also feeling that some necron and eldar tech and or designs will be appropriate.

They’ve showed a total of 2 sculpts. The Squats are going to get HQs, heavy support, fast attack, elites, possibly fliers and transports as well.

Question about oil paints. Aren’t you worried that as the years go on the oil paint will oxidise? And thus make the colours muddier overtime?
If you varnish over them then I'd assume no oxygen from the air will be able to contact the oil paint to oxidise? Disclaimer: I am no brain scientist

The best leaks I've ever seen was the Slave to Darkness battletome from a few months back. The battletome is definitely finished, but we won't get it till December or early next year
Quite a number of models and codex/battle tome are supposedly finished, theyre just waiting for the slot for release and with some items waiting for the lore/books to get to a certain point. Bearing in mind they suffered about 2 years of release slippage, there's probably plenty to come in the next 12 months. Of course 10th edition will probably release in 2024 or 2025 as the delays make it harder to justify launching next year when the typical 3 year cycle comes around.
From the looks of some Spartan unboxing videos, the proteus seems to be a hull change to the Spartan. Same tracks and general hull but modified front and fewer las cannons on the sponsons. In general the kits seem a to use a lot of common sprues. This might be GW working on being efficient with a less popular game systems to save on production costs but being extremely smart about it. Still, I’m sure loads of 40K players will pick up these kits for chapter relics so GW will still rake in the £££s.

This is going to earn me to boos, but people's pre-occupation with oils, or wet-blending before that, is not doing as much to improve people's paintjobs as they think. Blending is optional, it's a style choice. If your minis isn't looking great without blending, it isn't going to look much better with blending. It's like people are building a house on top of a foundation of sand.

@@qwer9676 a good foundation, unblended, looks better than a shoddy one blended. Putting shadows and highlights in the right spot for the style you are painting has a greater impact than blending. Look a John Singer Sargent's work: no one is complaining that he should blend more.
@@TylerProvick I never said blending will automatically make your miniature a masterpiece but just saying it can improve what most people are painting. You’re making it seem like blending doesn’t help much. The difference between a good painted miniature with poor blending and one with amazing blending can be pretty big, can the poorly blended one be good? yeah but blending could make it look much better for miniatures.

The land raider image is from the new libre books it was in the heretic one I believe. A specific youtube channel went through each legion in its own video and the emperors children had the land raider.
I think Creed Jr. looks great, I just think its dumb that GW made her Creeds daughter. Millions of Cadians exist, I think it cheapens the scale of the universe. Could of just been any gruff old lady veteran
Kasrkin look good, but nothing spectacular. I prefer the Scions. I do hope we get plastic Krieg Grenadiers.
The new Sentinel looks pretty sweet, I just dont know why GW chose to update that models as the old one was perfectly serviceable.
Moulds could have been damaged or worn out, which would push gw to renew it sooner than others. When they can no longer reliably get consistent sprues from the tooling they pretty much have 2 choices, retirement or replacement. Some items will get retirement as theyll look at historical kit sale information I'd imagine to decide if new tooling is worth it, given that each sprue can cost anywhere up to £100k+ it is a very important decision to get right, even for gw.
That new Ursula Creed model makes me think of Miss Trunchbull from Matilda.

The kasrkin shouldn't step on the toes of the scions. Kasrkin are elite guardsmen scions are a sperate specialist unit. Although there is a bit of cross over hobby wise. But guard players love choice and kasrkins go with cadian models really well.
The speculation about GW leaking on purpose is just speculation , i talked with Melcor a frznch painter which work at GW and these leak bother them so much, they improved security these days but it s not egnought, and it force them to reveal thibg early in their shedule.
Why would they ever tell an outsider that they leak leaks? Heck why would they tell a painter that they do so?
@@MrRattlebones640 idk maybe because say painter work with marketing dzpartement ? They work together etc. drink coffee together, complaint about work together. Like any other enterprise. And leaking don t give them any advantage. a poor quality leak just ruin the wow effect of the reveal trailer they work on.

New models are cool but they lack character. But to be fair the old Creed was one of the best they’ve ever made so it was gonna be hard to match up to!

Creed was pokeball captured by Trazyn as the planet was exploding. Overall I think the new Ursulla Creed looks fine but I just wish they would make new characters. I feel like they aren't sure how she would do by herself so they have added on that she is Creed's daughter to make her more accepted by the fanbase. I don't like when companies do that, if you have a new character then make them all their own.

Ok...looking at the LoV robot vs the Castellan....the Castellan is definitely going to be kitbashed into the LoV robot for some people's armies.
Also every time you say Squats I'm slightly sad since they are only Necromunda and 40k gets....whatever LoV are (they're fine I guess....but they aren't the Space Dwarves I had hoped for).
Im seeing the best way forward is lots of kitbashing with the AOS steampunk dwarves and the kin. Also feeling that some necron and eldar tech and or designs will be appropriate.

For me personally I'm going the route of a mix of Mantic Forge Fathers and 3D prints (have 3 patreons this month alone with cool Space Dwarf models).

Tempestus always had a Renesasnce style of Armour. Elaborate with a breastplate. I have always thought they looked dorky. Kasarkin are way cooler
I mean it could be a low res marketing pic they sent in a email or on some secret site filled with secrets... Not un heard of in the press world to get a pic like that and leak it something like that just happened to a Nintendo Switch indie game... However it could also be GW just low resing a pic they are going to unveil later early to make some hype but not to much.
I would love to play Malifaux just no one playas in my area. 😞 Kaeris is my master of choice or Molly. Love both Characters.
