When our family was on vacation, we were taken by my brother to the Kentucky Horse Park. A beautiful place. I have a picture of my 3 children by the Man of War Memorial.
Manowar died a few years before I was born but my family kept his memory alive always. The greatest racehorse ever known a monarch of the track. We used to go every year to visit his statue at the Kentucky Horse Park and before that at far away Farms there will never be another one
Have visited Man O' War's grave at the Kentucky Horse Park. Very moving to see his grave. Interestingly, most race horses are not embalmed and only the hooves and irons are buried. They have a film that you can watch at the visitor's center. Another great display are the markers, along the Avenue of Champions, which mark the stride of horses like man O' War, Seabiscuit, and Secretariat. The length of Man O' War's stride was unbelievable.
The VERY first horse to be embalmed. Man O' War will ALWAYS be the top racehorse for me. You can keep your Secretariat, & Sea Biscuits etc. I NEVER even was alive when he was but his style & electricity was captivating. Racehorse, Stud, & even his offspring were proven winners. The only race he lost was because someone new was running the start. Back then there were no starting gates. Just a white tape across the track. Man O' War was facing the wrong way when the tape was lifted. Despite that he managed to lose only by a nose to "Upset". Mr. Riddle did not run Man O' War in the Derby because he felt the distance was too much to ask of ANY young horse that early in the year. This was back in the day when owners & trainers cared about horses. Man O' War, Loved & remembered always! 😔🤘
The pet cemetery where my pets rest there are two horses so yes i know of horses laid to rest ! its just been blessed for people now ! here in the UK .
Interesting but not surprised. I went to college outside of Lexington Kentucky. Race horses are treated better than most people! They truly are a magnificent breed.
I knew but my grandparents lived in Kentucky and horse racing is in our blood. But I am really glad to see your piece. Many people aee animals as property you turned him into a living being with feelings. Thank You.
A vrariation from your normal stories but very informative.Australia’s famous horse was Phar Lap.Thanks again Kari safe travels to you and yours, from ballarat in Oz,👋👋🙏🙏👍❤️
When i went to Paris France back in 1978, i saw Napoleon's horse and dog. They were also embalmed but they used heavy metal and ingredients other than any aldehyde chemicals. They were exhibited behind glass in an upright, standing position. I'm glad i took the opportunity to see Paris and much of Europe back then. I wouldn't travel to Paris nowadays, it's too dangerous due to immigration problems. As for Man O War and his funeral and eulogies, keep in mind, that was a much different society in America back then. World War 2 was still fresh in everyone's minds. John Wayne and his Western Movies attracted many Europeans to settle in the USA.
@@KaritheMortician My friend's Father died in Sicily a few years ago. They don't embalm bodies in Sicily. They put his Father in a Casket after washing his body. They had a one day Old Fashioned viewing. Before closing the casket, the Morticians over there put several layers of the deceased clothes on top of and around the body. My Friend told me they do this because the unembalmed bodies have a tendency to bloat and explode in the grave or mausoleum.
They had an amazing relationship during Man O' War's stud & retirement. Will & Man O' War had a special connection. May they both be together & at peace 🕊️.💖🤘
Interesting the care they took to prepare Man Of War for his final resting place. I didn't know that he was never a triple crown winner. Thanks Karri for the history lesson
Samuel Riddle thought it was to much to ask of ANY colt, even Mon O' War, to run that distance that early in the year. He had an owner who loved his horse! 💖 🤘
Fascinating. I love your content. (a youtuber died recently and her family just showed her at her viewing right in the crematory, no casket. She looked incredibly beautiful. I thought of you and how you are able to help the family have a beautiful goodbye)
she was just lying on a table and wearing a "F cancer" t-shirt and some of her followers were uncomfortable with no casket. It was interesting. @@KaritheMortician
Very interesting information. Is it odd that his owner didn't allow him to race in Kentucky, but his body was moved there? I'm curious why that may have happened...
@@KaritheMortician Riddle was concerned about the volatility of Louisville’s spring weather, and the idea of running a three-year-old 10 furlongs on the first Saturday in May seemed too outlandish to him. There was also the idea of train travel to consider; horses did not board planes and fly from track to track as they do now. Trainer Lou Festel once said that the decision to bypass the Derby was a moot point, as Man o’ War was “off his feed” at the time. Some of these excuses hold water, while others simply paint Riddle as too conservative. But perhaps the biggest reason Man o’ War didn’t run in the Kentucky Derby is that Riddle didn’t want to risk missing the Belmont Stakes, then considered by many to be the most important race for three-year-olds in the country. Not sure why he didn't attend the funeral though?
I actually did know this info! Well not how many gallons of fluid. I am born and raised in Kentucky and the horse park in a staple for many of us to go to. They have a beautiful Christmas drive through display.
Big racing fan here. Didn’t have any idea he was treated so humanely after death. Secretariat had a necropsy done, ive always wondered why that had been done to him if there was no foul play. Very interesting!
Race horses usually are not buried whole. Secretariat was, however he was not buried in a casket. He succumbed to Lamimitis and had to be euthanized. His owner couldn't bear the pain he was going through. Maybe Man O'Wars owner didn't think he couldn't take the rigors of the Triple Crown The Derby is a mile race, the Preakness has very tight turns and the Belmont is a mile and a half run! Secretariat's TC stats still remain undefeated 50 years later! I think that Man O'War deserved a chance at the Triple Crown, for sure he was a force to be reckoned with!❤🐎

My mother when she was probably about 25 at the time did sing at his funeral My Old Kentucky Home Betty Lee link I wish somehow there had been a recording of her singing it. There was not a dry eye in the house. My own Thoroughbred died last year at age 30 and he was the same color as Manowar just not as big
Does anyone notice that the horse is on its right side in the first photo and then on the left side in the second! Does anyone know why this was and what the need to flip it over might have been??
This brought back a memory of the 1937 race horse 'Thunderbolt' who died weeks after winning many races due to accidentally eating chili pepperino snacks. His 3 owners thought the pepperinos were salted peanuts. In his final race 2 of his owners had to grab a bucket of water and hopped on a motorcycle to drive alongside of Thunderbolt with the bucket hanging from a pole in front of the horse. Thunderbolt won that last race. RIP Thunderbolt and Man O' War.
I always think horses are so special ❤
