- Fast sailing from Nova Scotia abruptly slows as I approach Quahog Bay, in Harpswell, Maine. Then the breeze dies altogether and I am obliged to use my sculling to cover last quarter mile to the anchorage. I visit with my father, who lives there, and provision for the next southbound hop to Cape Cod. I depart Maine in sparkling clear weather but temperatures are now dropping below freezing in the early morning.

At about 6:08 or so, a line appears to be dragging from the boom into the water. Glad you got to see your Father and glad you have hot coffee on hand when it is 30 degrees F outside. Thanks.
Often the reefing lines from the mainsail will drag over. No harm, just looks a bit shabby.

Your normal great example about what sailing is all about. Struggle getting that code zero hooked up. You have the original bowsprit. Mine is a plank you can walk on.

I've always liked rowing small boats, especially a canoe. Recently started following The worlds toughest row channel and am now fantasizing about rowing across oceans.
Oh my, well more power to you! About two miles is my limit with rowing the dinghy.

Surprise lobster pot at 5:25. Its a nice advantage to not have a prop and stuff to tangle with those.
Kevin, your clip of ghosting into the anchorage with the assistance with the sculling oar brought back so manibg memories of 50 years ago....your statement about the only other sound of the anchor chain being dropped sent chills thur this old body as it recalls 100s of days ending to that satisfying sound of another passage complete.

I've noticed a lot of chafe on ropes. Do you consider re-routing the ropes to avoid chafing?
Chafe is the eternal bugbear on boats.
I have a new-to-me wooden Falmouth Cutter 30 with similar long bowsprit as yours. It scares me that you are able to venture out on to the sprit attach the tack of your light air furling sail. (Minute 8:15 in the video) On my boat the staysail is hank-on and my genoa is on a furler on the outer forestay. I have a spinnaker in a sock but have not yet got the nerve to fly this sail. I believe the previous owner rigged a turning block just inside of the outer forestay and used a tack line thru this block to haul and secure the sail’s tack forward. Have you considered such arrangement for your sail?
Nice boat. Yes I have but just never got around to rigging up such an arrangement. Perhaps a few more trips to the end of the bowsprit--and getting dunked--will motivate me.

I edit the video chronologically. Takes me about 5 days to work through the raw footage and find the clips for an episode.

The sculling oar comes out, awesome! I’ve been surprised that we haven’t had to use our oar more often than we have.
Well let's face it, it's not easy moving several tons of boat loaded with all of your stuff by hand. But it builds muscle and character, for sure.

I noticed you did not have a tether on when you went out on the bowsprit to hank on the Code 0. Do you have a video where you discuss what you see as the advantages and disadvantages of a tether, and your reasoning for not using one? Curious.
I've talked about it, but never devoted a video to it. My issue with harnesses is that they constantly tangle when you are trying to move about on deck.
Pretty soon it will be last year!
Late October is pushing the weather for a trip south unless you aren't planning on doing much stopping enroute.
