    I was fully totally on Pats side even if 11 years is a long time. All writers have their processes and all people are different. Shit if it takes you 20 years to write a book that's how long it takes. But when you told people to donate and they will get a sample chapter and you smash that target making 700k and then still not delivering almost 6 months after the deadline, that is scummy.
    Even if you weren't happy with that chapter, you promised, you deliver what you got. When money the exchange of money a d promises are involved and you don't deliver, now you are trudging into SCAM territory.

But now it's at the point that he's just hosting TH-cam videos and answering questions about the book, instead of working on the book. He shouldn't be working at all unless it's on the book. Let's be honest, he gave multiple interviews and posts saying his publisher and beta readers already read it. His own publisher said she never saw a word. He just needs to be honest about what he's doing with the book, not punching down on people that are asking fair questions.

    • @mugogrog
      @mugogrog 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      His prerogative though isn't it? If you don't want to take what he says at face value then don't. I don't think he beats down on fair questions it's more like he said in the video. Like this stuff you're talking about, does it really matter if he told a fib or his publisher didn't want to create a hype storm prematurely since she knows he revises books like 100 times? You ask it once but so do 1000 other people and that turns it into a hunt more than actually wanting an answer.
      So yeah, if he doesn't want to answer a certain question, whatever reasons he may have just let it be. If you care about wether the book comes out now or in 5 years consider the fact that the less time he spends getting asked questions he doesn't want to answer and feeling bad about it the longer the process will take.
      Personally I don't care, I'd just as well have the book drop all of a sudden like a bomb. I simply enjoy hearing his views on things.

    • @jerseyjax3340

      @@mugogrog It all boils down to the exploitation of a fanbase. If you are here for his personal opinions like you would an 'influencer' then that's great, but he has continued to monetize a fanbase that is rabid for the completion of a series. Think of the thousands of hours and financial commitments people have made to this series. Asking for updates after a decade of waiting is fair. Fans have literally died while waiting for a third book.
      This video has Bully in the title. If he gave honest feedback the 'bullying' would stop, but he dances around the primary information everyone wants to know in order to siphon more money out of his fans. It's downright exploitive at this point. There is nothing wrong with holding someone accountable in business. He made a business commitment to his publisher and his readers when he published unfinished stories that would require additional purchases.

    • @mugogrog
      @mugogrog 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jerseyjax3340 Not sure what you mean by exploiting. He asks for donations to charity with help from fellow authors etc. I have never seen him ask for anything for his own sake. People don't have to donate to charity if they don't want to or can't afford to. In fact I am quite sure he specifically said multiple times that people should not donate if they can't afford it.
      If he was begging for money for himself that would be a different thing.
      Let's not forget that a big reason that he even does so many videos and Q&A's etc. is for the sake of that charity.
      "Think of the thousands of hours and financial commitments people have made to this series." How do you even commit thousands of hours to a series. If you like a book series and dive deep into it, isn't that something you do because you want to?
      Not even sure how you financially commit to a book series to be honest. Can you reserve a copy or something?

    He understands very well why people are so disappointed and react so sourly to his longer-than-a-decade hiatus. In his own words in The Name of The Wind:
    “When you wait a few span or month to hear a finished song, the anticipation adds savor. But after a year excitement begins to sour. By now, a year and a half had passed and folk were almost mad with curiosity.”
    ― Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind
    And I say:
    When you wait for a few years to read a finished story, the anticipation adds savor. But after a decade, excitement begins to sour. By now, over a decade has passed and folk are, justifiably, mad with curiosity and disbelief.
    Edit: I am still a fan, but I do not follow him anymore on anything he does. I will once or twice a year go online and check if there are news about about the third book coming.
    I also have ceased to recommend his books to new fantasy readers. It's better to give them something finished or with a higher likelyhood of being finished. I don't want new readers to be introduced to how frustrating this wait is. And no, not even the strongest paladins that come out in defense of waiting that long can say it is not frustrating.

    I'm not certain if this is in response to the reaction to your Kickstarter announcement.
    But I just wanted to give my 2 cents about that. I am just trying to make you understand the position of others a bit better, I did not comment on that video or the twitch chat, but to be honest some comments did describe my feelings when I saw that announcement. If I do get banned for this so be it, then I just won't be able to reach you anyways, but I will try.
    First of all, you wrote some amazing books, and nothing can take that away. It is true that the 2nd book had some weaker parts, which is, from what I think to remember, something you were not happy with, but it was still an amazing book as a whole.
    And if you take a long time with your 3rd book that's fine too. I can't say I've been writing books, but I too do at times channel my inner perfectionist and take far longer than I was hoping for, or just never submit my work because it just isn't good enough.
    And I also do tend to start side projects if it doesn't go as planned, maybe I'll get a great insight at some point.
    And sometimes it works. But often enough it doesn't.
    In these instances I've sometimes just dropped that project, but at other times I just forced myself to do something, and often enough it did actually turn out great in the end.
    It has been quite some years on your end now. Which is fine, really. But you do keep on starting new side projects, and you do keep on communicating these via the same channels that we, who wait on the books listen for boon news. You are effectively dangling a banana in front of us, just out of reach, and you expect to be met with nothing but positivity for it.
    I'm sorry if this isn't nice for you, but you've got to understand that what you're doing also isn't nice for us, and at some times frustration will show. Which is natural, and to be honest, necessary to archive many of the goals we set ourself.
    If I don't produce a result for something while asking for more and more resources at work I'll eventually get negative feedback. Which is what it is, it's how the world works, and it keeps me honest.
    When writing a book I can see that it might be a lot less transparent than just any project I work on, every author does his own thing, or changes his approach, and it's difficult to say when things fit together. But if I just ignore negative feedback I don't feel nice about it, and eventually I will get fired, for you it's less direct, but you should understand that just ignoring everything that feels negative probably isn't going to end well for anyone.
    I just wanted to get this off my chest. I tried to pack it nicely, in the progress I did get into rambling unfortunately, but that's that.

Certainly writing isn't easy, and pressure and life events can occur, but readers get involved in these stories and they'll react with 10 or more years of not having that satisfying (or even any) ending. Here’s the thing. If you just told people that you weren’t going to release it then people would stop asking. You are the one saying that you are still writing the book, going online in the public eye, giving updates about it. You signed up for this job when you wrote the first two books and when you kept promising that the third was just around the corner. You can’t really blame people who are invested in the stories for having bad feelings around the 3rd one. It’s not like it’s a few months overdue. People have been hearing about it being in progress for a decade. I don’t think you can blame people for getting angry. If people are being threatening then they are definitely in the wrong, but newsflash: you are going to get people angry who are waiting for the book when you keep telling people that you are working on it with no real evidence to that effect. Just go ahead and admit that it is not going to happen and the mean people will evaporate.

No one will ever touch him he cannot deliver. He’s afraid of disappointing people paralysis by analysis is there is motto. No matter what they do the fans will not be satisfied and they know this, and it cripples them. As far as I can see and say, even though I was checking on the status today of both their books I give up will not even purchase them or watch them if they do make it to the big screen at this point.
