Heads went on Mine, couldn't get any for love nor money. So In the Bin It went. Had It from new so got My money's worth out of It. I had a another one to Tape all of Live Aid. That one had to go back. I do miss It still though. Good luck with this one.
hi i had some AV decks doing the smoke main thing they did not like doing no work at all 3 x tascam 38 all the same parts on the power pcb lucky i carry the spare reg and caps i got a akai mg14d that the main 117 transformer died some one put it in to 240v uk and i will be working again soon i have 2 brown decks the same as you have here when to betacam later on the one that take the small dark blue tapes and later had a to do a job on it for sp tapes
The reason for the failure is the 12V switch mode power supply: two 47u capacitors that dries up and causes the two transistors to short and blow additional components. there is a service kit for that. Beware of the main filter capacitor, it can hold deadly charge very well!
Thanks for the advice, I tried replacing both caps and the Transistors, to no avail. In the end, I purchased a restored PSU unit. The current issue, is with the dreaded Sanyo caps, in the servo circuit. I replaced a number of these, which has made things better, but, it's still not great.
There is a surge resistor on the left side board (looking from the front), it is open. I had the same exact failure on my C7 (with the magic smoke) and I rebuilt the power supply with no problem. you will need to replace all the capacitors around the drum servo IC and around the capstan servo IC. I had success getting my C7 running perfect playing and recording fine, so it's possible. Good luck.
