DMAIC Control phase

  • The last, but certainly not the least, step of Six Sigma's DMAIC is the Control phase. Here we make sure that our improvements can be scaled to daily use over all shifts and teams. This means validating that all new standards work for everybody, supported by good training and follow-up.
    There are many lessons from Change Management that are super useful in the Control phase:
    * Make sure to use all 4 puzzle pieces for change management: skills, systems, leadership and belief
    * Organise Process Audits to enforce adoption of new standards and identify obstacles
    * Track results using the new expected performance levels in your daily meetings
    Consider the importance of the Control phase: if you don't cement the new way of working into the daily routines of your organisation, you'll have done all of the work in the previous phases for nothing, since performance almost certainly slide back down after the project team no longer puts their focus and attention on this machine/problem/topic.
