My wife and I have followed your youtube channel for a couple of years. We look forward to each episode. We have started container gardening this year and just put in our Napa, Collards, and Kale. We use your method of making our own soil. I have a question though. We want to know how we as Organic farmers can minimize insect damage to our crops. We go out each morning very early and pick off the caterpillars and bugs. Do you use any type of insecticidal spray on your crops? Thank you for answering.

    • @HollisNancysHomestead
      @HollisNancysHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

For caterpillars spray with Thuricide BT. For chewing insects use 100% Cold Pressed Neem Oil. For cucumber beetles and squash bugs I use Spinosad. All of this is organic

So I just ran out to take another look at my spinach seeds. And yayyyyy, about 4 of them have germinated pretty well. Your knowledge is really helpful and you explain things so well. I am so excited about gardening and your videos provide so much information. I live in Jacksonville and have been trying to find a gardening class for beginners, but this channel is literally my class so thanks a million ❤️.

      Maybe we should try it.

Dear Holli and Nancy. I admire all you do and simply love you. I have a great tip to share how to make spinach germinate with 90%+ rate. It des not like to germinate if temperature is above 15 C degree. So, take a tray with small cells, place two seeds in each and keep it in the fridge (in the plastic bag) over night, and out during the day. This will trick it that it is cold and germinate in 7-14 days. Then once germinated it can be replanted in bigger cells if desired. All the best to both of you. You are a real inspiration for all of us.

That's a great tip, to stagger planting so all is not lost if something happens. I didn't realize it would be tricky to do spinach from seed. No sooner was I struck by the sound the leaves make when pressed together, than you said it yourself! Such big, beautiful, healthy plants! I find myself doing some head rolls and nodding just to limber up my neck for the
head shaking I KNOW I'm going to do at the end of each video, out of amazement!!
I experienced VERY slow, and hard to tell what's what germination this year with
Parsnips, that got planted in an area that had coriander in it last year. Both are
notorious for being slow to germinate especially direct sown into an earth garden,
AND both look very similar as seedlings!! It was easily a month before we could
safely weed it. Pulled 100's of coriander growing as volunteers once we could truly
    determine which was which!!! 👍
This video, I think was almost more of a tenacity lesson as much as it was a Spinach
growing video. 28 days it said on the seed pack, however 2 weeks, 2 weeks, days
ahead,,,,,, we'll be back. Your encouraging words started ringing in my ears,
"You can do this" "Don't give up" Wise man! 👍👍👍👍👍

Ive had great success with seeds in our much cooler temps here in WI zone 4. Spinach, lettuce and kale all like our poor sandy soil so spring and fall even with frost they do well and I just throw the seeds in the ground and cover lightly. If ifs a bit too cold, I put a frost blanket over them. Same with basil bit in warmer temps. I don’t have any luck at all with any of those flimsy hardware store plating cells trays. I don’t care whose method I use so I switched to Park Seed Bio Dome system, heat mats and proper lights for just about everything I don’t direct sow. The results are awesome. Its a bit pricey but the Bio Dome will last a lifetime. Because its a shirt season I don’t have time to waste. Good demo!!

Thanks for the advice. My seeds have germinated but there's almost no progress even though I started them after the hot weather. Had no idea they were such slow starters. I'm going to begin another set of seeds and see what happens.

Mine germinated fine but haven't grown in 3 weeks. Look healthy with a set of true leaves but absolutely no growth. Bizarre

Hi Hollis and Nancy. Love your teaching on gardening. Question can I get those Tasman seeds other than Johnnys. No longer carried. Those leaves w are so beautiful, large. Thanks Edith

My spinach plants always fail. I've tried it so many different ways. In the ground, in pots, from seed, from starter plants, in the shade, in the Sun. Warm weather cool weather. But, I'm going to try again this year. We shall see. God bless you guys for all your hard work. Thanks for the videos.

Most Beautiful Spinach I've ever seen....what do you like that Nancy makes for you ? Can you spell it ? Can we see her make it, would love her recipe....I love Spinach Quiche.....Hi Nancy can you give us your recipe please and let us see you make it....? What lovely plants you & Hollis grow.....so lovely..... still waiting to see the Garlic....we can't even buy good Garlic here.....it's a shame too, we have so much farming land here, and seems it all goes to grow Soy Beans.....guess that's the money maker.....

Persistence truly pays off! I had great germination this year with my winter spinach. We’ll see what happens. As my farmer friend in Lake Wales says, “Just keep throwin’ seed at it”! Blessings...

I’m going to do my Fall spinach just like that, Hollis! My only question is why do you use [hybrid[ seeds, instead of Organic

We have been ordering from johnny's seeds for about 2 years and we really enjoy their seeds here in south central Alabama.

Thank you. Spinach has been my favorite veggie since childhood. It might be a Popeye thing. It's also my nemesis when it comes to growing it. Right now it's January in 7a. I have a couple tiny starts that I will follow your instruction on. And, I will plant more soon. I don't have blood meal, but I do have fish emulsion. Wish me luck.

That is some awesome spinach! I usually plant in the ground but this is a great idea. I will be trying this. Thanks so much for sharing.
