I am enjoying watching your videos and learning from you. I appreciate the prayers along with nurturing my soul as I garden. I am now praying in the garden to nourish my soul and the garden. Thank you, Hollis and Nancy. Keep sharing.
Thank you for the information. In the next few days I'll be planting my Scarlet and Dazzling Blue Kale (Baker Creek) under shade cloth. Excited to get into my fall gardening after this brutal summer here in Florida 9b.
Thanks, my kale seeds have just sprouted. Now I know how to get them off to a good start. May God always bless you and your whole family including Bing bing. Poor little bing bing was running as fast as he could to catch up to his ride.💞
It is heartbreaking when we lose plants. But what a lesson for those of us learning from you. We see that plant loss happens to the most experienced people, because weather happens. We can only do so much to counteract that. The most important lesson is to not give up. I know this progression video was done previously, but the timing of this posting couldn't be better. This year the heat is brutal all over the country. It's been a big deal for me, too, up here in South Jersey. I don't remember any other spring and summer that were so unseasonably hot. Your plants that did survive sure are strong and beautiful! Looking forward to some scarlet kale recipes from Nancy!!!
We sure often get those hot spells here in the south when we're not expecting them in the fall. But you did a nice job of recovering those Kale plants Hollis. Now I'm anxious to see what Nancy turns them into. I bet it will be mouth-watering. God bless. 👌
Kale is the favorite in my chicken coup..They actually go crazy for it unlike any other food..The animals know what's good for them..Kale is packed full of vitamins and keeps on giving.
Oh lord if you so right , i tried last year and was a no no in southeast texas . But i am doing it again this year under ingrown lights and then get them out when it's cool ... beautiful kale ! No doubt!
I’m in East Texas and same problem! I’m going to try covering with tulle fabric (for pests) after it gets cool over a wire semi circle frame and see if that helps. If it doesn’t I may start a few indoors if I can afford the space they take. I’ve grown lettuce hydroponically when it was too hot outside and that worked pretty well. It just takes space but I used a light which was fairly compact. I use the Kratky method. I like it because it’s set & forget (other than lighting). How about you? I’ve had to start a bunch of my seeds indoors this summer for my fall garden because of the heat. Otherwise they won’t even germinate or grow! Disappointing! Then if I transplant them out they get stressed and get eaten shortly thereafter by pests. Sigh. So sad.
I just planted some dwarf Siberian kale from hoss tools today in my garden. I did extra carrots in my buckets. I do love baker creek seeds too! Thanks for video, will have to try next fall. :-)
Hello Mr.Hollis Miss Nancy and Bing Bing I can’t leave him out lol! I really enjoy and appreciate y’all’s videos on how tos and all the information thanks for all you share I’ve learned a lot by watching also really appreciate you sharing your faith God Bless you both take care
Just discovered ya'll yesterday. So excited to see all the kimchi and a few other Korean recipes. I started teaching myself to cook Korean food about a decade ago when I discovered Kdramas 😀 I would love to learn how to make homemade gochujang, so maybe ya'll could do a video on growing and preparing the Korean chili peppers used for making it. Then again, maybe you already have - it's gonna take me a while to go through all your past videos LOL.
Been binge watching your videos and I do a lot of container gardening. I gotta say, you are the best. You keep it nice and simple! Going to stock up on blood meal, bone meal and thats it. I learned so much from watching you. I cant wait to get started!
She has some more videos coming soon. We are also trying to include some more of cooking what we harvest on my gardening videos. Just trying to make the videos more helpful and fun to watch❤️
Love your methods. It’s good to see that you were able to replace the lost plants. I recently injured my back while gardening and couldn’t help but notice that Hollis is wearing some type of back support in this video. Can you share what it is? I’m thinking it might be a good idea for me in the future. Ain’t none of us gettin’ younger! Blessings…daisy
Do you get cabbage loopers? I lost many recent kale plants to these pests that popped up and ate all the leaves eventho I was manually removing them 2-3x/week. I finally yanked all of the plants because it was too challenging to keep up the manual removal efforts. Thoughts?
Hollis, do you use any sprays, organic or otherwise to control Aphids, cabbage moths (BT I recall), other chewing insects like beetles or caterpillars?
Hollis/Nancy, I thought this was “purple kale”, but you keep saying “Scarlet”. So, can tell me which it is, please. It looks like something I would love to eat! Thank you for all your trouble in making these videos over months and months to show us the progression and outcome! Love to you both!! ♥️🙏🏼♥️
Your kale looks wonderful. Do you spray or dust? Everything likes to eat it here. Cabbage white butterfly, harlequin bugs, aphids, birds, I’ve just started growing mine undercover, and have had way less damage.
Im gonna have to do this. I keep planting and the poor kale (green curly, 1000 head and the mammoth) all were eaten alive by cabbage moth worms and/or aphids. I just had to pull them all again. Only kale that does well for me is redbar kale. Gonna have to cover them. What are you growing yours under?
@@onemoredoll5791 i used some recycled mosquito netting this year. Next year I may build boxes to put over the beds and I bought some very sheer curtains very reasonably at my thrift store that’ll hopefully work well. Good luck.
I’m going to have to do that too. If the heat doesn’t get them the bugs do shortly after. Some I can’t get past the seedling stage! 😡 I was considering growing indoors because of it (but I really don’t have room inside). I am going to cover it with tulle cloth over wire frames and see if that helps. 🤷🏻♀️🌱
@@Happy2Run4Me it should work. You still have to check them regularly. If one bug gets in, it can lay a hundred more. If you are direct sewing, maybe start them indoors and get them 6-8 inches before putting them out. Don’t forget to harden off. I almost killed my tomato plants in the spring. They say put them out for an hour or so the first couple days. I did that and they still burned. Next year I’ll put them out in the shade for the first couple days.
I can't grow kale, cabbage or broccoli. It gets to a certain point, and cabbage moth worms and other bugs have a field day. I am wondering how you do it.
Hey Hollis. Please tell everyone how good mineral buckets work. 1 decade on 8 out of 8, just collected a few more. Drill same size holes as 5 gallon regular bucket (it works good here, all little bit better than me but I guess that part is flexible) /dave
I gave up trying to grow kale and collards too. Bugs or something start chewing holes in the leaves almost immediately long before I can harvest them. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe I’ll try planting them later in the season when it’s cooler. Maybe the bugs will have moved on by then.
To keep bugs out of the garden is impossible. You can reduce insect activity by keeping the weeds out as much as possible. Watch for insect activity and treat with appropriate formula. I stick with organic solutions. For caterpillars I use Thuricide BT. For squash bugs I use Spinosad. For chewing bugs I use 100% cold pressed Neem Oil.
I heard the guy from Deep South Homestead say he has garden envy when he watches your videos. I think he speaks for us all lol
Danny is a peach isn't he?
We love Wanda and Danny! They are very nice people!
@@HollisNancysHomestead hi great videos can I grow kale broccoli and cabbage now in end of April

Cool intro music! I like the guitfiddle :)
Rock on!

Hi. LOVE your videos, they have been so helpful towards my gardening journey. May I request for a video about beets? I am in need of guidance.
Great suggestion! I will ask Hollis, thank you!
I grew that last fall in Florida panhandle did really good ,great for salads for me ,grew well until late spring or until it started to bolt
Looks good enough to eat!

How do you decide which plants to put in the ground, which to put in raised beds and which to put in containers?
I'm trying to grow some jalapeno peppers in a crate over the fall and winter please do a show on it

Do you think 1.5 gallon pots would work?
I have to use a large sun shade on got days. I'm in 6a

You might have already addressed this in another video; I’m curious to know what you do with the spent container soil after you harvest your buckets.
He recycles it in the garden. I love that nothing goes to waste on this channel. They reuse the containers as well.
That's a beautiful lake. What lake is that?
I'm south of you in Brevard. I transplant mine into the ground. I put them under an oak for this reason, plus it gives them frost protection.
Enjoyed this video very much so i would like to know where to find the seeds here in South Africa

Psalm 40:11 KJV
Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Lord: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.
How do you keep cabbage worms & other pest off your kale?
Last fall was really a hot mess! Fingers crossed for this year!

The accuracy of your aim 😊. I would have fertilizer dust everywhere.

Try adding it to soups and stews
I dehydrate it, powder it & sprinkle it on everything.

they named that kale wrong, scarlet is red, not purple or violet
