    • @aigomorla
      @aigomorla 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@capmultser yes it the tomahawk can carry nuclear ordinance, but the Astute is still classedas a hunter killer, not a Boomer aka nuclear attack submarine.
It would compare close to the seahawk, and los angeles class but a much more modern in design, while a boomer is an Akula Typhoon class (russia) or a Ohio Class (USA).
Virgina class is a multi role, designed to fill the gap between a hunter killer and boomer.
People still debate tho if the Astute is as deadly as a Seawolf, as the Seawolf is what the F-22 Raptor would be to submarines. Also the Seawolf is and still is so ridiculously expensive, it would not pass congress budget in building anymore.

Whichever country(even NATO country) was willing to trust USA was foolish... Even If Russia would go against Poland for instance, USA would never defend Poland. Why? Because of Russia´s overwhelming power. USA know, that all their big cities would turn in to melted radioactive glass within 45 minutes.... That is why I would not blame USA for being not credible, because any NATO country expecting that USA would accept nuclear war with Russia or China is just foolish...

The Astute class boats are `hunter-killers` & don`t carry or are ever likely to carry nuclear warheads. It`s the Vanguard class that carries the UK`s nuclear deterrent, a very capable submarine which will be replaced by the Dreadnought in the coming years. It`s easy to overestimate the UK`s nuclear deterrent when in fact it`s the US`s huge fleet of Ohio class boats that will deter any thoughts of survival by whatever nation that may consider a pre-emptive strike.

They hedged their bets on small numbers of well made high-tech weapons while the Soviet Union and the US made large numbers of good-enough weapons. We know which system worked. I worry about that. I worry that if the F-22 is up against large numbers of good but not great fighters it will not measure up. That's what happened to the F-15 when the Israelis were flying theirs headlong into a squadron of Syrian fighters. They locked on with their radar and fired their missiles. But the missiles sailed right through the Syrians without a hit. The Israelis had to dispatch them the hard way, which they did. We had good weapons in Vietnam but a lousy doctrine. The F-4 did not even have a gun for dog fighting. It was getting shot out of the sky by the much inferior Mig-17. We still rely on heavy fighters. I don't think it would hurt to have a light, inexpensive, highly maneuverable fighter jet in our arsenal. Something like the F-5.

With the army bases they just need to hit a large city that's nearby but the same applies to Russia and any country the only reasonably safe military forces are those either already in the air and ships well out to sea and all subs as they can just hide away under the oceans. Surface ships are easily to find due to satellites looking down on different areas. Air craft as long as a refuelling plane is flying nearby can stay in the air for some time and can land anywhere that has a straight long clear area. another target would be oil fields as many ships and subs and all aircraft need to be able to refuel only ships and subs left running will be nuclear ones.

The best assurances against the use of these nuclear weapons is when peace becomes the one prevailing thought of all nations, and when America and Russia especially begin to rethink their own relationship and are willing to engage in dialogue and seek ways to improve the condition of man, with mutual respect and dignity for all, starting from a position that we are all mortal and breathe the same air.

Dovid2000 it is not at all just America and Russia anymore China is a much bigger threat than Russia. China wants Taiwan like a wolf wants a lamb and there's a lot of tension between China and India. Russian policy for decades has been to annex other countries by military force try to keep expanding. There have been the minorities such as Kamikaze and the radical jihadist that don't value life as the Western world does they will do a lot of power because of that. Those ideologies or attitudes are not easily changed. The United States doesn't grow its country by stealing other people's country. Man's nature is generally somewhat lazy, lustful and greedy, my money is on a strong very good military peace through strength. I'm just happy that the Brits are allies and not the enemy. When it comes to anti-submarine warfare your Navy is as good as any might be the best. It's good you're strong with the carriers again.

The acoustic transmission from hull to water is one of the most important factors in stealth. It's not just about masking engine noise...
When you're in the water, the water is denser, heavier, vibrates and transmits waves. These waves can travel unbelievable distances. What you could hear from 10ft away, you can now hear from 50 feet away... It's not that it's louder, or more intense, it's a larger falloff radius.
With submarines being mostly nuclear power, this means no engine noise, no motor noise, and no exhaust/bubbles. Instead what you are listening for is electric and mechanical noise. Relays switching creating noticeable bangs, hatches opening and closing, pumps winding up, mechanical clunks, tings, bangs... These will usually come along with noticing the propeller too.
A: You either hear the tings and bangs first and then realize there is a slight churning to the white noise behind that sound
B: You notice the churning sound, followed by tings, clunks, and bangs
There is no skill to hearing the churning first I believe, as it's rather random as to whether a sub is moving forward or resting, along with what the crew inside might be doing, and the design of the propeller. Either or, in the case a submarine moves, the sounds will reveal secrets about other acknowledged sounds, and can confirm whether or not you're hearing a sub, a vessel, or random noise.
    For example
You hear loud clunks and bangs, but there's a small engine diesel sound, that'd be a smaller vessel of some kind, could be fishing, or cargo, depends on size of motor and it's running speed.
You hear a low faint churning, a weird rotation in phase in the white noise, but no mechanical noise. This is where you'll probably get nervous because it's a sub in stealth. The crew have been ordered to touch nothing unless ordered to, including flushing toilets or running water. You'll want to listen to the faint rotation for other smaller noises behind it to confirm you're hearing a sub, if you can't find anything then you're also listening for the beginning of cavitation, or you're counting phases per second to try to get a mental image of the propeller. Is it 3 blades, 4 blade, 5, 6, 7? (There's a software that will show propeller profile automatically) Base this off the rotation, create a starting point based off overlapping phases, that will also help your ear hear what you're seeing on screen to confirm it's correct. Propellers with 3-4 blades are usually ignored because they're usually used on fishing or sport vessels and are a pain with cavitation...
This is where the acoustic tiles come in, they make it more difficult to confirm that it's a sub, by masking interior hull noise, that noise is the main culprit, you can hear what is underwater, vs above water. The idea would still the same, to restrict crew from leisure and basic needs, such as running water. They should all remain at post and everyone will try to remain quiet, like you're hunting deer. Any crew member dropping a wrench, even a plate or mug, it will transmit that sound into the hull, and then to the water, and may very well be loud enough to be picked up on passive. The tiles act as a buffer between the hull and water to mask smaller noises.
The dolphin thing, this may very well be real. It wouldn't surprise me, but no it wouldn't be the engine noise... My idea after learning how sonar worked was to mask the churning and mechanic sounds to passive with louder sounds that wouldn't actually make sense. omni-directional sound that cannot be aimed at, just the general direction of where the source is, but no one will do that to dolphins or whales because they can be anywhere and swim around and do their own thing for god knows what reason. To a sonar operator dolphin or whale sounds would be normal, you cannot avoid hearing them but it also creates a mask for smaller noises, relays clicking might be masked behind a dolphin voice, or pumps can be masked with the sound of whales, missles loading can be masked by the sound of an air pocket bursting.
You turn your propeller so slowly that it's corkscrewing you forward in the water, not creating pressure difference but rather swimming gracefully at a crawling speed. No rotation noise, the idea is to mimic 1:1 natural sounds that occur on a daily basis, things that a sonar operator will say "Ok that's just whales.. Or maybe this" and will mask/bleed over the waterfall display/spectrograph, and will also mask it to the human ear too, little do they know a relay has clicked, a valve opened, a pump slowly spun up, a torpedo has slid into the tube and locked itself in.. EVEN if they do hear you, they will think you're stationary when you're actually crawling forward. When things go south you go for bigger noise like a whale, spin up the propeller enough to push and you can make a move that will be confusing, they may not notice you spun up propeller and pushed yourself forward a lot more, even if they know you're there because the whale is much louder and isn't something a submarine would do. As you get closer you slowly fade the sound to a rear yagi speaker to shoot the sound backwards and make it appear as if it's moving away, when it's actually getting closer.
Keep in mind, these sounds are very faint and distant anyway and are almost inaudible, the sounds you actively omit can be the same if not louder, the louder = bigger falloff radius and seem closer than you actually are, or even further away. The goal is to play off of that falloff radius and make it appear elsewhere. You can accomplish the same in HAM radio using an array of Yagi directional antennas and the way it bounces off the ionosphere. The only way to know where is to calculate that bounce, how many bounces, at what angle. Radio tracking is extremely hard to pinpoint, you can only get a general direction but never the location until you get close enough to see the antenna physically with your own eyes, the same occurs in the water with sound. It's best to play off that bounce too. You see a terrain such as a cliff, you can bounce off that cliff to make weird angles, that will appear in different directions.
