In 1972, during the Vietnam war, I was flying B-52’s from Guam. Our track would take us north of the Philippines for aerial refueling. One night, during a thunderstorm, one of our airplanes lost their systems that provided flight instruments and they lost control. 7 men were forced to bail out into the ocean. They got into their life rafts in high seas. They had sent a distress signal, so a C-130 was dispatched to the scene. They were hundreds of miles from land and in a difficult situation. But, a nuclear submarine, returning to base from a patrol was able to surface and pick up 5 of them. One injury was a broken leg. One crew member died and his body was later recovered. The Air Force greatly appreciates the Silent Service!

I spent most of my time on a Benjamin Franklin class, C4 Backfit boat. The 1st time I walked onboard an Ohio class submarine, I thought I was on a floating hotel compared to my old boat.

They are 18 Ohio subs in service 14 of which carry nuclear weapons, they carry 24 trident nuclear missiles each, there is only one typhoon in service and it carries 20 nuclear missiles... there isn’t much of a comparison, after the collapse of the Soviet Union they stopped maintaining the other 5 typhoon that were built. Also the Ohio class are starting to show their age and they are being replaced by 12 Columbia class subs 1 of which is currently under construction and they will carry 16 trident nuclear missiles each

if you use your brain a sec more and look at the displacement , you will realize it is not "crazy" but common sense and simple math... Aside that, the destroyer have a lot of other weapon systems the Ohio do not have - AA missiles, artillery, radar systems, etc...
They have also made 2 silos on a few Ohio's into tomahawk missile launchers so that a boomer can launch them in support of ops if they are the only thing close by. That way the very expensive cruise can be for a reason and not just to threaten the world with anialation

I worked on 4 of these beautiful girls from 1984 to 1987 as a First Class sheet metal mechanic. If I was a younger man, I would love to go back to work at Electric Boat in Groton, CT and help train the new youngsters on how to do sheet metal properly!!! I love the Tridents that I worked on. Seriously, if you ever worked on their construction, you gotta step back and take a look...these Trident submarines are beautiful girls!!!

I'm a network engineer and I did a lot of the computer systems used on your bases and equipment. I basically did technical work without the orders and a lot more money, hehehe.
I worked on the Control Systems of all of them from 1981 to 1990 redesigning them to be more repair and maintenance friendly and if you ever was allowed in the conning tower you probably would've wondered how would they fix something if it broke?

I remember walking into the room where it was all assembled as if it was in the sub and somebody asked "Where are the hinges to open the panels to fix problems or change a light bulb?" No kidding. Was pulled off my Life Support System assignment for the Shuttles to do a complete re-design. edit; I think there were more ECNs engineering change notices on the Trident than any other project I ever worked on and I spent a lot of time in that Mock Up room with 2 sheetmetal mechanics. I worked my way through college doing sheetmetal and TIG welding.
Can't in Kentucky, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Michigan, Kentucky, Nebraska, Wyoming, and the one I served 4 patrols on, Henry M. Jackson, either. The 688 fast attacks were all named after cities. I'm from Topeka, KS and I don't think a submarine would do much in Lake Shawnee or Lake Perry. SSN 754 USS Topeka.
I'm not a service man but I was fortunate enough to work with a couple old sub vets at my old job. We built irradiation equipment for military. We had to two technicians that served on subs and told me some crazy stories. One tech Ralph, served on the USS Skate, was one of the engineers that designed the first nuclear submarine. He had stories better than any movie. Many of you probably read the book blind man's bluff, best sub book ever. One of the secret missions they did was during the cold war America discovered an underwater communication cable used by the Russians. Divers from the USS Halibut spliced into the cable allowing US to listen to all Russian naval communications. The other tech, was one of those divers. He also told me admiral Rickover tried to court marshall him when he was on guard duty because he tried to get on the boat without his ID and he wouldn't let him pass. He said Rickover called him every curse word in the dictionary but he wouldn't let him pass. Luckily the captain came out and saved him. I got massive respect for anyone that serves on these awesome boats.
Plank Owner (Reactor Controls Division) of the Alaska (SSBN-732) here... Being on the new construction crew was brutal and extremely rough on us youngsters...lots of mental health issues....some of my very qualified shipmates* didn't make it through the "new commissioning" process...after which we finally went to sea for the first time....😿..... That said I'm very proud to say I was one of the survivors to have persevered and worked our asses through all of it (construction, 3 sea trials, splitting of the crew into blue/gold, 2 missile test launches)...and then onto 2 FBM deterrent patrols. Great crewmates. (Me, I eventually moved on and spent 3.5 years obtaining an engineering degree at UCF). I'm amazed my boat is still out there...35+ years after her commissioning.... We had guys who had previously served on diesel-boats on our crew... talk about changing of the guard....ha! Thanks for the video... Cheers! *2 years of rigorous training in nuclear power. Super difficult to qualify and get orders to a sub in the first place. So much wasted talent.

The four Ohio's which can be armed with upto 154 Tomahawks have turned into carrier killers after the Tomahawk Block V were upgraded with anti-ship capabilities. The Tomahawks are subsonic but a massive salvo of 154 sea-shimming missiles must be a challenge to any modern carrier battle group to defend against.
Can't have more then 14 ICBM carriers. Ohio, Michigan, Florida, and Georgia gave up their Tridents for Tomahawks but the other ships of the Ohio class still carry all 24 Tridents they were designed to carry. Also it was most likely the START I treaty between the US and Russia that limited the amount of sub launched nukes more then the UN. As both the US and Russia among others would just out right veto the UN trying to tell them how many of anything they can have.

These Ohio class nuke subs are terrifying and rock solid. The Nimitz class carriers are scary to dictators, because they can see the squadrons flying along their coast, but an Ohio is complete stealth.

I served with the Marine Corps Security Force Company at King’s Bay, GA. from 1989-1991. There is a lot that goes into the maintenance and support of these behemoths; I can only imagine the technology implemented today.

Jackson SSBN-730 Blue Crew whilst she was being built (PCU); through Sea Trials; and ultimately when she was commissioned as a United States Ship! Served on both Ohio and it's predecessor Francis Scott Key (SSBN 657). Francis Scott Key served as the test platform for the Trident 1 missile. We served deployments with Trident 1s years before Ohio came into service.

Yes...Ohio-class boats smaller in terms of displacement than the Typhoon class, but pack a bigger punch. More importantly...of the 18 Ohio-class boats, ALL are still on active duty, but only one of the Typhoon-class is still on duty. Fun facts: --US warship classes are named after the first ship. (Yeah...we're boring and predictable like that.) The notable exception is the Thresher-class which was renamed Permit-class after the Thresher sank with all hands in 1963. --In compliance with treaties signed with the Soviet Union, four of the Ohio-class boats were converted from carrying ballistic missiles to carrying cruise missiles: Ohio, Michigan, Florida and Georgia. Because Ohio was the first boat converted, she has the distinction of being the namesake for two different classes of warship.

These boats are HUGE. The boomer I was on had 3 decks or levels. The Ohio class has four. They're also about 10 feet wider than the class I was on. I was already active duty when USS Ohio was supposed to get underway for first sea trials. We left port at Groton ahead of Ohio. Of course, there was a Russian AGI lurking off the coast of Connecticut. They intercepted us and rode alongside for awhile. Got their photos and so on. Then broke off to await Ohio.
According to russia, it is nothing but a fishing troller. The need all of those Antennas for tv Reception. We had them follow us during a daso shot on the G.W. Carver after overhaul. And out of Holy lock going out to our dive point. Have you ever seen pictures of the hull out of water sporting fwd torpedo tubes. Fun times.

I once read something about the Ohio boats being so quiet that the only way to try to detect them was to search for a silent spot in the ocean. The ocean's ambient noise level is louder than the boat.

When I was at one of the Air and Space museums, the display about the missiles said that 2 Ohios with peak armament would be able to hit every major target in the entire Soviet Union.

Crimson Tide was so inaccurate that I can’t watch it. It has some great performances, but the inaccuracies kill my suspension of disbelief. I was stationed on the USS Alabama when they were making the movie.

And the Captain does not need agreement from the XO to launch missiles. So the sub wouldn’t have been there, and the site would have been nuked by another boat. Not much of a movie.
I'm from Ohio and I got to be a rider on the OHIO 726 in 85, I was on the silversides SSN-679 in dry dock bremerton and the 726 needed a temp cook and I said yeah, compared to the Sam Houston SSBN/SSN-609 that I transferred to when I got off the Ohio the inside was huge, glad I was one of just a few Ohioans who got to be a crew member on the greatest deterrent we got.
As a kid I was sailing in the Straight of Juan de Fuca when one of these surfaced nearby. It was eerie how quite it was. One moment there was nothing, the next moment there was this large black vessel with people standing on it. 2 and half decades later and I still vividly remember it.
Although I never had the pleasure of serving on one of these beasts, I'm constantly amazed at how they operate. My hats off to my brothers in the silent service. You "are" the tip of the spear.

This will probably get lost but can you do a video on the USS Clamagore? It is the last surviving submarine of its type and on the national register of historic places. They are planning on sinking it before this year's hurricane season and it would be good to get knowledge out there to try to stop it. It is currently owned by the patriot point museum.

I worked on 4 of these beautiful girls from 1984 to 1987 as a First Class sheet metal mechanic. If I was a younger man, I would love to go back to work at Electric Boat in Groton, CT and help train the new youngsters on how to do sheet metal properly!!! I love the Tridents that I worked on. Seriously, if you ever worked on their construction, you gotta step back and take a look...these Trident submarines are beautiful girls!!!
As a senior at university in 1980, I attended a hiring fair with Electric Boat. The recruiter's opening line was, "There are only two types of ships. Submarines and targets.".
I'm a network engineer and I did a lot of the computer systems used on your bases and equipment. I basically did technical work without the orders and a lot more money, hehehe.
I worked on the Control Systems of all of them from 1981 to 1990 redesigning them to be more repair and maintenance friendly and if you ever was allowed in the conning tower you probably would've wondered how would they fix something if it broke?

I remember walking into the room where it was all assembled as if it was in the sub and somebody asked "Where are the hinges to open the panels to fix problems or change a light bulb?" No kidding. Was pulled off my Life Support System assignment for the Shuttles to do a complete re-design.
edit; I think there were more ECNs engineering change notices on the Trident than any other project I ever worked on and I spent a lot of time in that Mock Up room with 2 sheetmetal mechanics. I worked my way through college doing sheetmetal and TIG welding.

Can't in Kentucky, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Michigan, Kentucky, Nebraska, Wyoming, and the one I served 4 patrols on, Henry M. Jackson, either. The 688 fast attacks were all named after cities. I'm from Topeka, KS and I don't think a submarine would do much in Lake Shawnee or Lake Perry. SSN 754 USS Topeka.
I'm not a service man but I was fortunate enough to work with a couple old sub vets at my old job. We built irradiation equipment for military. We had to two technicians that served on subs and told me some crazy stories. One tech Ralph, served on the USS Skate, was one of the engineers that designed the first nuclear submarine. He had stories better than any movie. Many of you probably read the book blind man's bluff, best sub book ever. One of the secret missions they did was during the cold war America discovered an underwater communication cable used by the Russians. Divers from the USS Halibut spliced into the cable allowing US to listen to all Russian naval communications.
The other tech, was one of those divers.
He also told me admiral Rickover tried to court marshall him when he was on guard duty because he tried to get on the boat without his ID and he wouldn't let him pass. He said Rickover called him every curse word in the dictionary but he wouldn't let him pass. Luckily the captain came out and saved him. I got massive respect for anyone that serves on these awesome boats.
If he had let Rickover on board, he would have been court martialled. This was Rickover's way of testing security.

Being on the new construction crew was brutal and extremely rough on us youngsters...lots of mental health issues....some of my very qualified shipmates* didn't make it through the "new commissioning" process...after which we finally went to sea for the first time....😿.....
That said I'm very proud to say I was one of the survivors to have persevered and worked our asses through all of it (construction, 3 sea trials, splitting of the crew into blue/gold, 2 missile test launches)...and then onto 2 FBM deterrent patrols. Great crewmates. (Me, I eventually moved on and spent 3.5 years obtaining an engineering degree at UCF).
I'm amazed my boat is still out there...35+ years after her commissioning....
We had guys who had previously served on diesel-boats on our crew... talk about changing of the guard....ha!

The four Ohio's which can be armed with upto 154 Tomahawks have turned into carrier killers after the Tomahawk Block V were upgraded with anti-ship capabilities. The Tomahawks are subsonic but a massive salvo of 154 sea-shimming missiles must be a challenge to any modern carrier battle group to defend against.

Can't have more then 14 ICBM carriers. Ohio, Michigan, Florida, and Georgia gave up their Tridents for Tomahawks but the other ships of the Ohio class still carry all 24 Tridents they were designed to carry. Also it was most likely the START I treaty between the US and Russia that limited the amount of sub launched nukes more then the UN. As both the US and Russia among others would just out right veto the UN trying to tell them how many of anything they can have.

I served 2 tours onboard one of these, 14 deployments in total. Loved it and would do it again in a minute.

I served with the Marine Corps Security Force Company at King’s Bay, GA. from 1989-1991. There is a lot that goes into the maintenance and support of these behemoths; I can only imagine the technology implemented today.

Jackson SSBN-730 Blue Crew whilst she was being built (PCU); through Sea Trials; and ultimately when she was commissioned as a United States Ship! Served on both Ohio and it's predecessor Francis Scott Key (SSBN 657). Francis Scott Key served as the test platform for the Trident 1 missile. We served deployments with Trident 1s years before Ohio came into service.

More importantly...of the 18 Ohio-class boats, ALL are still on active duty, but only one of the Typhoon-class is still on duty.

These boats are HUGE. The boomer I was on had 3 decks or levels. The Ohio class has four. They're also about 10 feet wider than the class I was on. I was already active duty when USS Ohio was supposed to get underway for first sea trials. We left port at Groton ahead of Ohio. Of course, there was a Russian AGI lurking off the coast of Connecticut. They intercepted us and rode alongside for awhile. Got their photos and so on. Then broke off to await Ohio.
According to russia, it is nothing but a fishing troller. The need all of those Antennas for tv Reception. We had them follow us during a daso shot on the G.W. Carver after overhaul. And out of Holy lock going out to our dive point. Have you ever seen pictures of the hull out of water sporting fwd torpedo tubes. Fun times.

I think it was 4+ years later, left as an E-5 and went back to New London for the RM pipeline. I was onboard from start of that overhaul nearly to the end of it. I likely know you.

When I was at one of the Air and Space museums, the display about the missiles said that 2 Ohios with peak armament would be able to hit every major target in the entire Soviet Union.
Used to ride on sea trials on these boats. They are very impressive machines even by today's standards.

Crimson Tide was so inaccurate that I can’t watch it. It has some great performances, but the inaccuracies kill my suspension of disbelief.

@@killbot86 The thing is, absolutely none of the plot points would have happened. The Alabama would not have been rushed to sea because there were already Tridents on patrol to do the job. And the Captain does not need agreement from the XO to launch missiles. So the sub wouldn’t have been there, and the site would have been nuked by another boat. Not much of a movie.

I'm from Ohio and I got to be a rider on the OHIO 726 in 85, I was on the silversides SSN-679 in dry dock bremerton and the 726 needed a temp cook and I said yeah, compared to the Sam Houston SSBN/SSN-609 that I transferred to when I got off the Ohio the inside was huge, glad I was one of just a few Ohioans who got to be a crew member on the greatest deterrent we got.
As a kid I was sailing in the Straight of Juan de Fuca when one of these surfaced nearby. It was eerie how quite it was. One moment there was nothing, the next moment there was this large black vessel with people standing on it. 2 and half decades later and I still vividly remember it.

I live only a few miles from NSB, Kings Bay, Georgia in Saint Marys. It is wonderful to watch the boats as they enter and exit port.

This will probably get lost but can you do a video on the USS Clamagore? It is the last surviving submarine of its type and on the national register of historic places. They are planning on sinking it before this year's hurricane season and it would be good to get knowledge out there to try to stop it. It is currently owned by the patriot point museum.
WOW! Last time I saw the Clamagore, (Mid '80's) she was open to the public at Patriots Point in Charleston, SC. But then so was the SS Savanna (The 1st Nuclear Merchant ship) , which I recently heard was scrapped as well.
