No, it became a worldwide sport during the 80’s, before Michael Jordan was anything. Everyone watched basketball from 80 on, and Bird and Magic were the main reasons behind that. Jordan is and was, amazing! No disrespect to him being one of the best to ever do it. However, basketball had already become a world sport, and it was due to his predecessors.

I agree with your Golden Age of Basketball comment. When I was young, I hated basketball. I loved baseball and football. Shooting a basketball took so much concentration for me. But i could throw a ball with my eyes closed. Larry Bird and the Celtics n Lakers rivalry made me love basketball. The 80s n 90s are gone now. I don't watch it anymore. I still love Magic n Bird. I'm sad it's over. Good times watching those guys play.

The Holy Trinity is indeed what I think of those 3. Larry is the Father representing the mind of the game Michael is the Son representing the pinnacle of the athletic body, Magic is the Spirit of team play, leadership and just like the spirit on Easter he's passing over everyone's heads.
Kevin McHale is the founder of the 60-80 club and he almost did it twice. In 1990 he nearly nearly went 50-90 for the season. He also started shooting more 3 point shots that year.

with all the amazing players of the 80s and 90s they are truly the holy Trinity... there are no others on that level and they seem to know that its the 3 of them and everyone else... 14 nna championships 11 mvps.. and countless other stuff.. and enough age between them where the older 2 were comfortable passing it on.. and neither one can really claim superiority over the other so it was a meeting of equals... knowing that neither could intimidate the other... while they all sort of could with the other superstars.... also they all left us wondering what if.... as great as they were what if? what if mj didn't retire both times? what if magic wasn't forced to retire because of fear and ignorance at the time? what if larry didnt get hurt after 9 yrs let alone bias dying... would he and the Celtics made a HUGE push to ruin that first 3 peat? I tend to say absolutely yes.. not to mention potentially make the Detroit bad boys a footnote in nba history... i think a living bias and non injured bird change a whole bunch of nba history from 87 to 92.... and more depending on birds age and what level bias actually reached... but do o think he is at minimum worthy? yes... i think he ends up more wilkins who plays defense and shoots better... and with any luck playing with bird the passing gene kicks in and he is in that greatest sf conversation with bird and lebron... but its hard to make that leap from college tapes only

Bird, Mike, Magic….they truly are the triforce of basketball. I love how super competitive they were, how badly they wanted to prove they were BETTER than the other. Yet, out of all those clips, none of them ever said they were better than other. Or claimed they were the best player or any of that sh*t. Sometimes it amazes me how little respect the generation has for their peers and their elders…

They have been marketed as a "Holy Trinity" who were the saviors of the NBA. Furthermore they were/are promoted as being heads and shoulders above the players of that era, as well as those who preceded them. While giving them credit for being all-time greats, the "Holy Trinity" concept distorts NBA history. It was the "Holy Trinity" concept that kept an all-time great player off the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team. Isiah Thomas proved to be their peer on that level. He led his Detroit Pistons to post season series victories over Bird's Celtics, Magic's Lakers and Jordan's Bulls. He led the Pistons to three consecutive NBA Finals and back-to-back NBA championships [1988-89, 1989-90]. Thomas' Pistons posted a 32-16 record against Jordan's Bulls, 20-10 regular season, 12-6 post-season. By no later than 1986, Isiah had eclipsed Magic as the NBA's top point guard.

I just don't have this kind of feeling for Lebron, I certainly did for Kobe but it's just sad how Lebron did it to himself. I don't think he will have the love and adoration listening to the stories about him on the court, there's no sense of wonder, hardly anything to give you goose bumps or make you smile regardless of the number of times you've heard them all before. It's just sad and regrettable. He absolutely avoided the hero's journey that all the greats went through during their time, specially the holy trinity of basketball.
