Larry is ever Larry-down to earth, humble, yet confident. He downplays his accomplishments in order to focus on the team. He attributes his amazing plays either to luck or to the time he spent practicing. Then, he’ll quickly deflect the praise coming his way onto a teammate or even onto an opponent.
To me, leadership is a top reason for choosing Larry as a goat. He is a natural born leader. It’s why he was able to take ISU to the final four and how he affected the biggest single-season team improvement in history. He understood how to foster team camaraderie, confidence, and unselfishness. He modeled all three of these. His trash talking was mostly just breaking chops to either light a fire in himself or teammates or to get into opponents heads. 21:36 You can see the twinkle in his eye when he talked about trashing talking Dominique. It was part of the camaraderie.
I was also thrilled and surprised to see Larry back, and wondered what made him do it. He tends to see through those who are trying to use him to promote themselves. Upon reflection, I think he was trying to promote the NBA league itself, and believes NBA Top Shot is working to do this. Check the 2017 interview with Thierry Henry I sent you. He gave that interview while he was in London working to promote the NBA there. He also quietly helps support charities, French Lick, ISU, Terre Haute, and the Pacers (see the memorabilia recommendation). As far as promoting himself, he always said, “I’m not a limelight type of guy. I’m not a self promoter. I sort of let my basketball do my talking. I love to play the game.“ He’s still the same old Larry.
All facts! I will peep it! Yeah I did get a sense of sensation when he spoke on Nique and even DJ as well. It was a bit saddening.

Great interview and thanks for sharing. The "sissies" comment was made after game 3 in the 1984 Finals in LA after Boston was blown out by the fastbreaking Lakers. Game 4 was the classic takedown of Kurt Rambis and the legendary shouting between Bird and Kareem after Kareem was throwing elbows. Bird was a monster in that game 4 and actually hit the game winner in OT over Magic on a fade away jumper. I also liked how Larry shed light on the "trash talk" that was supposed to be on the court and stay on the court between the players. What has happened over the years is Bird's trash talk was so good and so funny that the opposing team and coaches and even Larry's teammates were so amused and entertained by these comments have felt compelled to share it!! The comment was from "cornbread" Maxwell = after Bird hit the game winner vs Phoenix. Maxwell said the loud crowd got so quiet " you could have heard a mouse pee on cotton". Also remember Bird never had a 3 point line in high school or in college. The 3 point line was new for the NBA in Bird's rookie year and Bill Fitch who was Larry's first coach for 4 years hated the 3 point shot and evidently KC Jones also did not like the 3. Can you imagine Bird practicing the 3 point shot growing up??? I love how humble Bird is in person and how competitive Bird was as a player. We all were blessed that got to watch him play!!! I still think Bird was the best all around player I have ever seen.

Larry was GREAT at so many aspects of the game……Passing (BEST passing forward evah), Rebounding, Free throws%, Scoring, Clutchness, 3 pt shooting, Physicalness, Effort, Accountability, Attitude and LEADER! He purposely got his teammates involved because he knew the TEAM needed them if they were going to be successful. Larry was ALL about WINNING….damn the stats.
Larry s GREATNESS was evident his very first year in the NBA, adding 32 more wins to the team. Did Jordan do that? Jordan is #2 imo btw. Jordan took full advantage of the popularity worldwide that Larry and Magic gave and thats why he is regarded as the goat. Even Kareem said Larry is the best basketball player he s played against.

What’s great about Larry’s trash talking is that it’s game-focused, not personal. Even when he asked Craig Ehlo “Is your mom watching?”, he was NOT insulting Mama Ehlo… he was teasing *Craig* after sinking ten straight on him. Larry *never* insulted players’ families (especially mamas) because he had so much love and respect for his own mama.
Larry’s main focus of trash-talking was *challenging* opponents to try to stop him - because he wanted to beat their best efforts.

I never realized Bird was left handed until they showed him signing autographs on jerseys at the end of the video. I thought perhaps the editors had reversed the image like happens some time but I went back and reviewed the video and I could read his signature as he signed. No wonder he could shoot left handed so well. Now I am amazed at how well he shot right-handed. I hated Larry Bird when he played because I wasn't a Celtics fan but respected the hell out of his game. Thanks for finding that video! Phil
Bird is like me,we are the same age. Back when I was a kid they tried to get you to use your right hand. I write with my right but bowl and do other things with my left.

Walton says Bird said the fans were out for blood. My opinion is Bird is right that Walton hadn't heard anything like that riled up crowd and said they were out for blood. Bird probably answered that with " And if we don't win it will be our blood they want".

Now that I'm here commenting, I'll share. I'm 53, Caucasian male. I grew up loving bball at the age of 6. Fell more in love with bball watching Magic and Bird, and I loved them both. I played the game in my jr years as a PG. Loved Magics play making and wishful to have Birds Dagger 3.
I share this as I feel privileged to have watched all eras. Bird is my personal fav, but I can honestly say I can set my bias aside. MJ is my goat, Kobe is my 2, Bird 3rd overall. LeBron is in my top 10 and is my #2 SF

FYI...When Larry called his teammate's "Sissy's", That was in '84 against LA. The game after that is when McHale clothes lined Kurt Rambis. I agree! Bird is the best SF ever! Its also my opinion that Larry is the one that saved the NBA. yes! I agree Magic had a lot to do w the rivalry and he was Great!!!. Bird was considered the "Great White Hope" Its unfortunate that if it was Magic only coming to the league things might have been different. No sponsors, No live games on tv and the stigma of the Race and drugs. He came into the league and dominated from Game 1. If you're too young to see him play, trust us! people that saw bird play knows he put the fear of god into some of the greatest players ever! I'm just making my case on why Bird might be the 2nd best and most influencial players ever!!!

The reason the fans wanted blood on Game 6 of the 86 Finals is because Ralph Sampson of the Houston Rockets had thrown punches at Jerry Sichting during Game 5, ending with both players being ejected.
What *really* pissed off the Celtics and the fans about the incident is that Sampson was 7’4” to Sichting’s 6’1” - Sampson threw the first punch, at a man a full 15” shorter than himself.
Blood is what they sought and blood was drawn! HOO RAH!

Larry is the real deal. He didn't care about stats, he didn't care about what people thought of him. He didn't care about what people would say about him.
He had a JOB, and that JOB was being the best WINNER (as a team) in basketball! (not just playing basketball)
All he really cared about was winning, and he used every tool in his possession to outdo his opponents.
A lot of players talk about all they care about is winning, but all I hear is blah blah blah out of their mouth. I agree with you! Larry was about it!

Incredible content BU. Bird looked emotional talking about the late DJ towards the end, like in his mind he was reminiscing and misses him (particularly 34:03 looks like fighting back tears for quick second) and we know Bird is tough and doesnt show emotion.

I wonder if he, having probably appreciated the retired players in his time giving him room to play his game, is paying it forward, so to speak. He got a *lot* of respect from the retired players as his career began and moved forward, and i wonder if his humble-self absorbed that as them being gracious.

He scored 20 with his left on Feb 14, 1986 @ Blazers (120-119 OT). Larry had a triple-double and scored the clinching shot. His game stats were 47/14/11/1/2 .

I don't think I would characterize Bird as an introvert; back in the day, he was a jokester, kidded with his teammates, loved drinking beer with his buddies, etc. I would characterize him more of an enigma, he just defies stereotypes and public expectations about fame, similar to one of my heroes Bob Dylan. Like Dylan, Bird was cautious of the media and celebrity hype. He downplayed his own accomplishments while hailing others, and stuck to mid-western small town values all of his life. When he was a star, he mowed his own lawn in French Lick, choosing to live there rather than the big cities. Drove around a John Deere tractor. He permanently injured his back in 1985 building his mother's driveway. He was working class, and seemed to have never forgotten that. I once read an anecdote about Bird during the Olympics in Barcelona- he was at a bar with Barkley and other players and ordered a bottle of Budweiser beer,. When told the price , he pushed it back and said "keep your X dollar beer". Magic said Bird would always try to avoid the fans and media parked out in front of the Barcelona hotels, choosing to find a back exit, while the other players walked out the front. He didn't want or need fame, back then, and now.
Bird's book _Bird Watching_ was written while he was coaching the Pacers. It has a lot in it about being in Barcelona and the Dream Team experience. Good Book. As are _Drive_ and _When The Game Was Ours_
Shaughnessy wrote a great book on the Larry Bird Celtics too.

Smoking (or exposure to second-hand smoke) is one of the leading causes, but there are other factors that can cause it as well, including genetic propensity, exposure to construction dust, respiratory illnesses, aging, etc. Those of us born and raised in the “pre-smoking bans” era were exposed to second-hand smoke *everywhere* (even in commercial flights and grocery stores!) IF Larry has COPD… it might simply be exaggerated breathing sounds depending where and how he was mic’ed up for the interview, because some mics are really sensitive to subtle sounds we don’t usually detect.

@BU_TV I know right. If shooting three’s would have been part of the game and Larry actually practicing shooting from beyond the arc, he easily would have averaged 40+ a game. If Larry’s in his prime playing in this era and in this league of soft players, many of them just straight pusses. In a league where defense is rarely played and if you breathe on someone let alone touch them it’s a foul and if you cut a loud fart it’s a technical foul possibly an ejection. Lol😂😂😂
Yeah bro, if Bird played in this era it’s easily 50+ (20+ from FT line alone) a game, 20+ rebounds a game 10+ assists a game and 5+ steals a game. Most of the best defenders to have ever played the game couldn’t guard him, not even at the end of his career when he could hardly stand up straight could they guard him. He would torture defenses today, and torch any defenders that were sent out to try and D him up.

From what I understand Bird was saying things to Erving such as "Maybe you should retire" or something like that and reminding Erving of how many points each one had. Wasn't Bird's trash talking what caused the fight?
@chris93703 From what I've read and heard, it was Bird having 42 points to Dr. J's 6.
Bird denies telling Dr. J to retire and says that it must have been chatter from the bench, which there was a lot of.
Either way, it was Dr. J that got pissed and ... it went from there to them BOTH being ejected.
They worked it out afterward, shook hands with smiles at their next meeting, and mutually agreed to never autograph "that" picture.
In an interview with Chick Hearn not too long after the event, Bird said he and his brothers got into scraps too but he always respected and loved them afterward.

I am a little unclear on what was said or done. However, there is an interview of Dr. J in which he says "Bird started it" so it must have been something Bird said or did that started the fight.
