Thank you for this topic, and also confirmation that I am on the right path to teaching my children how to calm their nervous system when they are afraid. I love the hot cocoa description. I used a similar one today with my 10-year-old. I described smelling a birthday cake and blowing out the candles as it’s his birthday today and they had a lot of anxiety as it’s such a big day for him and he was really excited Fahad, a tummyache due to nerves of going to school etc! Think I will try your Coco description as I really want to teach him ways to calm himself down when he is anxious ❤
Loved it. When give an example to a listener regarding how she should address a child I feel like crying. Almost every time. I know I still have unfinished work from my childhood traumas and I'm a mother of 3 beautiful kids. It's being very tough. But I can't stop, for me or for them. Your work is giving me so much strength lately to keep on going and after watching almost 2 weeks of your content I'm seeing awesome change. I'm giving my best to turn darkness into light inside of me while trying to find goodness inside every part of my children's behavior. Thank you so much.
Hi Dr Becky, thank you so much for this topic of fears - it is so much relevant at the moment. My 4.5 year old daughter is afraid of me dying when I'm old. We spoke about what happens to our soul when it leaves the body and goes up in the sky (w/o getting into much detail about what happens to our body next). I also explained that the person remains with us as long as it lives in our hearts and memories, but that didn't seem to be helpful either. I tried the 'i believe you' approach and tried to come up with my stories from childhood when I was afraid of the same thing, but frankly I still cannot find the right approach to ease her fear. In fact, I remember my own big fears of death and the idea that I'm going to be buried in the ground forever, just drove me crazy. I didn't really get any tools to deal with that at that time. My question is what tools should I equip her with in order to handle this situation better and also how should I explain it to her that happens to our body, without traumatizing her too much. She has never been to the cemetery yet and I want to be ready for this conversation when the time comes. Thank you again a lot! ❤
