that's probably why it's called 'ship of theseus' its a parable where the entire ship is replaced with new boards. every piece. the parable is "is it still the same ship?" just like this modpack

@RandomBlackBox Notably in like 1.19 it seems they actually did change up their disposal. Stuttering across chunks is now far less of a thing than it used to be.
I think you can use WeakReference objects to let the Java garbage collector free objects before it gets to the point where it's forced to garbage collect at the memory limit. That could help spread out GC and reduce stuttering/freezing

I mean, turning a voxel array into a mesh is a solved problem in computer graphics, idk why people always go like "That looks so bad", yet have never complained at any other use of the marching squares algorithm in games

You can definitely tell this is still Minecraft, especially if you're familiar with modding. It's absolutely incredible that the game can be pushed this far, though. It looks phenomenal, and I hope this pack gets released publicly
I do truly look forward to when this modpack is completed. To play it and , if nothing else, to say "I play this. And this is the potential of a madman modding Minecraft"
DUDE the mmo idea is awesome! sounds very fun! you got the look of a 2000's mmo down. i would add options to play singleplayer and to connect to other servers just for user experience though. Ship of Theseus is a awesome name too, especially for a minecraft type game haha. Can't wait to play this modpack when it releases!

This feels like how exploring alpha minecraft did as a kid. I really can't wait to see what comes of it. Some thoughts: I hope the "ages" arent as extreme and fast as your comment implies they are. Maybe you were speaking metaphorically, idk, but for any society, even a society of one, to enter an "age" associated with a material requires not just access to it, but the ability to gain more and to process and work it, as well as the distribution of that material to such a degree that it simply defies the standards of warfare or technology. I'm sure I'm overthinking it, and I understand separating blocks and items and stuff into areas of a tech tree, or whatever. I think that's a really cool and fun idea, especially cause I've been a civ fan ever since i could work a computer. I'm just a stick in the mud about anthropological semantics. Secondly, be very careful with those boats and online play. You had the idea of an MMO but minecraft boats have been known to be an extreme-level nightmare for server owners. They lag up the server so much that one I know personally had to disable them to keep the server from crashing. Now imagine that but with waves and physics. Yeah. I'm sure there's workarounds and solutions, but if i were you, i would test the ever loving shit out of it and see what can be done. That's all I know on the topic so do with that what you will. But yeah, great work. Will be watching and waiting.

@kholispo6800 well yeah. Vintage Story is an independent game and has been in development for years. This is something with far less dev time having to work in Minecraft's engine. I would be very intrigued if the developer tried making their own game though.
It's funny, bc even though it looks nothing like the vanilla game, you can still feel the original game beneath all these mods. In a way, you may have changed all the components, but it's still minecraft.
Not surprised too much that this is minecraft, the no cubes mod and the textures meshed surprisingly well, the player model though, i have no idea how that was done (i mean, i have a loose idea, but thats it)
this is a beautiful project, please don't rush it, from what I see the care and development put into this has already ushered in great qualities. Please don't rush it like other devs will do and I'm sure it'll come out greatly

There is a mod named Blockfront that turns Minecraft into Call of Duty with fully functional matchmaking. It is genuinely good. Not played in a while so unsure about if there are players left.

Networking is something you wanna do pretty early on. Adding something this important later on usually means a LOT of refactoring... Head hurt thinking of it xP

I think the compass at the top of the screen should only be visible with the compass item present in inventory, or equipped somehow. Maybe health bars for passive mobs could be yellow, and allied mob health bars could be green, like in many MMORPG titles. I adore the vision you have for this modpack. I think this could go far if you went in the survival RPG direction.
This is PEAK But I would suggest you add more animals with some mod like alex's mobs (tho the retexturing is going to take years), weaponry with something like tetra and spice of life valheim edition to make it even more unique :D

It is the same player model, just with a movement mod and "Transparent voxels". Basically you carve a new shame out of steve
