I've raised tons of roosters and none have ever attacked me. My current 2 beg for food follow me around and love to be petted. I'm sorry you guys have had such a hard time with yours. I found it helps to handle roosters from when their young and continue to do so even as they are adults. Having more hens help. Pulling talons can help with them hurting you. They could just be stressed as well.
I have done the exact same as you and I have only ever had one stay attached to me, all the rest grew out of it no matter how much time I spent with them 😭
I’ve handled all of mine as early as possible and so far none of the roosters I have handled have been mean. I wouldn’t be surprised if your roosters are stressed.
It would depend on what breed what kind are they
I think most of theirs are Indio Gigantes, cochins, and Frizzles
We have had five roosters, two, of which, were out for blood and one of them did some damage to my leg. We raised all from chicks. They are not worth butchering. We killed the two worst behaved and gave one away. I found that two boys to 30 girls was a good ratio.
Thank you for showing your Roosters all together in their own area. We had a similar problem, but we were unsure of putting all the Roos together. After seeing you do it, we tried it and they are all now living happily together in a larger enclosure. Thank You for your videos.
That's great to hear!
We have a angry rooster what should we do
@@whitehouseonthehill
also how many hens for a rooster
@@whitehouseonthehilli buyed a black rooster and i think its the 6000$ one i can show pic of it if needed
i feel like we havent seen much of what joey gets up to on the farm and how he helps out... it was really cool seeing him chase the chicken back towards you while still being gentle enough to not hurt the chicken
You can train your roosters To be respectful. I learnt the trick from other TH-cam homesteaders on here. Catch up the rooster and then with one hand put pressure on him to sit on the ground and using your thumb and first finger on the other hand put pressure on him to lay down his head. Then wait until he calms down before release. Repeat this daily for a few days up to a week and he will look at you very differently. The only damage being to his pride. I tried this on a friend's rooster that he was giving up on and has had no trouble since.
I've used this tactic too, and going into my flock the Rooster, his name is Manson he's a silver wyndotte, either gives me a wide berth.. or comes up to me if I've got food. 0 problems since doing the 'showing dominance' thing.
I’ve done this as well with my roosters and it works. Every time I hold them, I do this and they are quite respectful. But each family member has to do it with each rooster.
I actually didnt know this was a thing i just did it for fun like sitting a child down
When my rooster went through puberty he went after my shoe ONCE and I did this. He never did it again although he was very skittish afterwards and I had to rebuild the bond through treat feeding. He was the sweetest after that and stayed sweet his whole life
Does this works with hens? My most docile has turned hostile which is sad
All of your children are absolutely delightful, but I needed to let you know your oldest seems to be growing up into a very fine young man! I can easily picture him as a very kind hardworking adult!
You're so kind :)
I have a rooster who is a royal little nugget. He tried to attack me once. Fortunately he didn't hurt me. I have handled him ever since I had him has a cockrell. After that I went on TH-cam to search out deal with a rooster. I found this guy and he pinned the rooster on the ground including his head for 15 seconds. The bird was not harmed, just put in a submissive position. He also said anyone bothered by the bird has to do that. I did that and Doolittle my rooster he still charges, but he stops about 3 feet from me. A squirt bottle also helps too. Most importantly you got to do what you feel is best for your family. Which by the way you children are growing so fast. I love watching your channel. You and Becky are doing an awesome job!
Yes, we often do that with our meanies. I usually try different things with each one that I’m having difficulties with. But Becky and the boys have to do the same thing with them otherwise they get picked on. They all leave me alone.
My second cousins had a mean rooster and they were too afraid to go in the chicken coop but I just walked in there and grabbed the rooster like it was nothing
Joey is a beautiful, smart and wonderful dog. I lLove how he helps out on the farm.
The trainer-guy who said that Joey was not trainable and mean is proved to be so wrong.
That trainer was a joke.
Might want to get some sort of fly repellent on your heifers. They've been looking agitated the last few videos. Give them some relief til the snow comes. Hope your roosters settle down. They're beautiful!
How beautiful are those beautiful memories and well done for what you did to a family and what you offer to it with all your strength because you are a wonderful father with my mother who is mighty in your care and the care of your children, may God protect you and take care of you.
Beautiful homestead guys … lovin the birds n all … I can’t wait for the Aviary to be completed and see the birds inside enjoying all y’all hard work .. that is goin to be a beautiful site to be seen … ❤
I used to donate my extra roosters to an elderly woman in the next town. She was on a fixed income and would slaughter her own and appreciated the birds.
We just recently now have a rooster overpopulation. We have two that are great and a whole bunch little roos who our hens decided they wanted to hatch out a month ago. My favorite part is when they find that voice, its adorable until they figure it out.
Just watched your show and your Rooster the Silver Phoenix is what I have. Lucky for me only one and he is a mean one too. He has already attacked me off guard in the eye. Had to go to ER and lucky for me they did a CT scan. They found I had a brain tumor. People asked me if I have killed him yet? To that I say, "How do you kill something that just saved your life?" I hate him butt..... and life on my mini farm would be better without him. How did he get mixed in with a bunch of Easter egger's If he is a Silver Phoenix? The end of this story is the brain tumor is out and I'm recovering at home. I'm not myself yet but getting better with each day. I'm waiting for plastic surgery on my eye area and to align the eye ball with the other eye because he has caused me to have double vision. I was sitting down on my van steps and that rooster saw me when my head pooped from around the corner and sucker attacked me right off the step. Please be careful of your children with your Rooster. Thanks for sharing
Joey has good herding instincts.
I do not
@@joeyl.rowland4153 lol
He isn’t trying to herd them he is trying to playfully kill them but they don’t see that
@@joeyl.rowland4153 😄
did they get a livestock guardian dog or a herding one
that dog is going to accidentally hurt one of those birds at that rate, they're also terrible breeds for guarding
Joey is so cute! Also with my rooster we trim the spirs with a drimmle to keep them smooth and short so no one gets hurt ad bad (mainly the hens cause he's a nice rooster)
The best thing to do with a mean rooster is to flip them upside down. I have a rooster named will. He was a very mean bird. Whenever I would let the ladies out, he’d chase me and give me bruises from him attacking me with his spurs.
My Aunt came over and taught me a good way to calm a rooster down. Simply grab the rooster by the feet, hang them upside down until their wings are open and they stop flapping. Hold them for awhile. This will show that your the boss.
After doing this for a few days, they should no longer chase you.
There are so many beautiful roosters looking for homes. I've often thought of starting a rooster stud farm. There are places you can have chickens, but not roosters. And would like to hatch out some of their eggs.
Some breeds are more aggressive than others but I have found that handling them often when small helps especially if you can intervene when they are being picked on. One of my kindest roosters was one that was picked on a lot when small and I would go out and scoop him up and hold him for a while just so he could rest. That rooster never once showed aggression to me his whole life, he also always made eye contact with me when I spoke to him. I have no doubt that was due to all the times I rescued him from being bullied.
20 years of raising chickens and only 2 were ever aggressive to people. They went to the stee pot. Too many nice roosters go to the stewnpit to justify keeping a bad one
We finally just added a roo to our flock- a friend had an extra and he is a silkie/Mille de fleur mix and he’s been very sweet. Only pecks when you’re trying to grab him out of the nesting boxes 🤣🐓😝
I have found roos that grow up together tend to be friendlier towards each other. Otherwise it tends to be a bit more strained. I had my brahma roo and his son, and they couldn't stand each other, even though PB was 6 years old and wasn't doing much breeding anymore. But, on the other hand, I have my black jersey roo (Toecutter 6yrs) and his half Sussex son(TJ 3yrs) that always roost together and share a harem without any issues. I tend to keep my batchlors like you are, in their own groups without hens. Sometimes they end up meat birds, others are waiting for their hens to grow up to breeding age. I mostly have large breeds though, with a few old bantam. I try and keep my bantams separate from my standard and giants. I have actually had a couple accidents of giants stepping on bantams and hurting them. Though I recently received a young whitehackle roo that was being a trouble maker at a friend's place and put him in with 2 brahma girls. When he tried getting aggressive with Cleo, she would spin around and sit on him lol. He stopped being a jerk.
Wow, the red pheasant is really striking red. Pretty bird.
I love y’all’s channel!! It has inspired me to get chickens!
Awesome!
Chickens are amazing ! , I love them
CAREFUL. Chickens get in your blood and get addictive. You could end up with A LOT of birds.

I've noticed to have happy roosters we need more space and more hens, rule of thumb is 8-10 hens per rooster, we've had a few mean ones that had to go to the oven but we managed to make the rest nice and we had about 30+ at one point
I am having to address my too many rooster on the farm problem this weekend.
Seems like it's the time of year... trying to get organized for winter after the spring chicks have grown up. Good luck!
I so wish yall were closer I lost my fizzle to my mom's turkeys this year 😢 if yall were closer to Mississippi I'd so buy one of your beautiful ones
The chicken your dog was chasing felt like he was gonna die the way he was running outta breath at the end😂😂
Hey, you are one of my favorite channels❤️love your videos of your wonderful family. Can’t wait to see the aviary completed.
There’s a video on spur removal. I was doubtful but it worked. They grow back just like our nails and it wasn’t hard to do.
I had two roosters that would charge you and maul your foot 😂
There was this one time I had my back towards one of them, heard him charging and I turned around. He stopped and acted like nothing happened and walked off.
i have a rooster just like these ones, his name is Gustavo he is a barred rock/silkie (possibly Bannie) mix, but he is abusive towards our hens and attacks my little brother a lot, but he is scared of us now so he isnt much of a riot now.
I used to have that problem like the white frizzled hen, i think its because of stress; stress because there are a lot of roosters
I just love the way chickens stare at you when they give you that look mine they do that too but they loft one leg up while staring at me making a weird noise
I live in Washington State, I'm small flock farming and would love an expansion of Cochin roo, a 6 pack of girls for him and a starter pack of Cornish cross.
When I have mean Roosters I notice what triggers them the most is boots and shorts sometimes and sometimes pajama pants when I wear jeans and shoes I'm normally just fine, but they're sometimes Roosters that are aggressive no matter what
Hope that the farm will function smoother now that you’ve tried to resolve the rooster problem, I recommend maybe putting some more roosters from the rooster coop in a different coop.
Having enough hens also help with rooster aggression. In my experience the more the handle a rooster as they age the more tame they become. Mine actually begs for food and pets. I just got another one. I know you guys don't have time for that though. Sometimes pulling talons out help as well.
I use a fishing net to catch the little blighters, fast and less stress
That's so funny at 2:18 it looked at first glance you had the camera on a possum, 😂
My sister had horrid roosters. Her kids went in pairs, 1 with feed, the other to play Rooster Ball (kicking or pushing the attackers away). I only had NICE roosters. I raised them all & was really involved with them. No trouble & even my geese were lovey to me & my kids. Not my hub or his friends that lived on our land.
Best fortune with ur flock
Rooster feathers can be used in fly tying ...
And you can eat them just got to cook them like you would a brisket .
If I was in US, I would have loved to get those roosters from you.
We have a young, big Delaware Rooster 🐓, anyone need 1, they're beautiful
My golden pheonix rooster has the same problem. But recently his son has been kicking him out of the coop so he hasn't been around to attack me. He flies out of the fence and stays in the woods during the day. Then he sneaks back in at night.
A top to a guinea pig cage works great to catch chickens. You can slap it down over them and then open the top door to take them out.
If you have too much roosters but you still want to keep them, I would keep a roosters only flock/bachelor flock. If they don’t see any hens around they will be less aggressive. I have a bachelor flock for any mean roos and the change when they were with the hens to a roosters only flock is a big difference
I have a lone black silkie hen amongst a bunch of other hens and a roo. I’ve been searching for a silkie roo to try and breed in the spring. If you really want to re-home one, if love to give it a shot!
"Safe hands Jake!" think you missed your calling in life! You would have made a good goal keeper the way you snagged that silver phoenix rooster! Brilliant video and hopefully the rooster flock will work for you all, at least Becky will be safe from him from now on!
My white turkey passed away that morning she came off of her wrist and hurt her ankle and that night she fell into the pond and didn’t get out The weird thing about her Is she was a female turkey but she had a beard and everything else on her indicated that she was a girl
Maybe you need ear fly tags. They work great to reduce flys on your cows!
Y'all have a great family
I love your videos I have 3 chickens 2 frizzles and 1 bantam chochin mix.
Roosters have no fear .. they fight to the death . If you hit them or swat at them...this to them means you want to fight . The only success I've had with aggressive birds is to grab them and hold them down with your hand on they're back . When they calm down and have submitted...let them go . This is the way they establish a pecking order. I have had birds that I thought for sure were gonna meet they're end . But after doing this a couple times thy "catch a grip" !! Lmao 🤣
If you notice, the daughter slaps at and hits the rooster with her bucket. Personally, I feel it's poor training to allow a child to abuse an animal like that. But that is just my opinion, of course, it appears they have gotten whatever animal would look good on camera or they'd be able to breed and sell.
Again, that's just my opinion after occasionally viewing over the years. But, what do I know, eh?
@@Kymberlee_W That was the wife...........................................................
@@just_do_it469 Ah right, the wife is really slight. Even worse, she should definitely know better.
@@Kymberlee_W Well you are right, but what would you do if the rooster came after you with those sharp claws.
Even the smallest would make good chicken stock that you could put up for winter soups.
Happy to see you your vidios take for ever
We had a beautiful Polish. He was stunning. We were breading him with our frizzle girls so he was locked up in a smaller space for a little while. A few days after we'd let him out he kicked my husband in the shin. My husband is 6'3 and 138lb so nothing on him. Our Polish snapped off his spur and started bleeding. My husband ran to get me to help. By the time we got back to the pen he had gone into shock and all I could do was hold him. He bled to death in about 8mins.
We have mostly small hens so we've always gotten rid of our larger roosters. We have a beautiful silky. He's so sweet and a pekin rooster. I have to watch him but he's a lot better since we lost our 3rd rooster. So 2 seems to be our sweet spot.
We are in spring and need to find some new hens as our girls are getting older.
We had a mean arse rooster when I was a kid. He used to chase my niece around and she absolutely hated him to no end. She was maybe two and he got her good one day and she went running to my dad crying. Well gpa picked her up and loved on her a bit and settled her down and then told her that if he hurt her again to tell him and we’d have fried chicken for dinner. I should add here that my daddy was a butcher and she was a farm girl through and through, so she knew what he meant. I was sitting on the porch and watching her play and that rooster puffed up to head her way and she saw him starting to come at her and she threw her hand up like a boss and yelled at him was some serious authority. He stopped, they stared at each other for a good few minutes and she stomped off and straight into the house. Well I obviously had to follow to see how this was gonna play out. She stomped her mad little self right up to paw paws recliner, woke him up and gave him an earful about that “dumb woosta”. Gpa stood up and took her by the hand and she stomped him right back out, pointed at the roster, stomped her foot, folded her arms and just glared at said rooster. Well, long story short, we did indeed have fried chicken for dinner. I thought for sure she was gonna lose her stuffing when daddy dispatched that “dumb woosta” but she watched the whole process and even helped him pluck it. She was happy to be done with him attacking her every time she turned around, but she does have a definite connection to where our food comes from as well as respect for the animals we eat. Asking her about it later in life if it scares or traumatized her she said no that it hadn’t but it was a learning experience for sure.
That Silver Phoenix Rooster is one beautiful bird. Shame he is not staying and producing some off spring to sell.
Happy to see you! Hope September has been going well for you all ❤
You brother just living my dream.
Good thing you put all the roosters with the turkey cause If they ever fight with the turkeys it’ll put the rooster in its place. Love the video keep doing What you do.
Yep, they keep fighting to a minimum 😂
@@whitehouseonthehill that’s good
Used to be chased by a rooster as a kid, fortunately now I realize I am bigger then they are so no more fear :D We've been using Factor for a year now and love it! Such yummy food with pretty reasonable portions. We don't like microwaving so we put in our oven at 375 for around 14 mins (convection) and it comes out perfect! The salmon is incredible btw, soooo good!
Sorry you're having issues with your roosters. Of the hundreds we've had over the years only one has ever been mean and he got dispatched as soon as he went after one of my kids. My original Phoenix rooster was the sweetest boy we've had. He'd jump in my arms for pets and snacks. He was such a beautiful bird.
We have also raised roosters some time they attack..so that normal
Man, the hatch rate of roosters to hens sucks so much. LOL! We had our first hen hatched baby in early spring and it ended up being a girl. Now we have two other hen hatched babies that are a few weeks old that we THINK are girls but ya know how that goes. And now we have one baby running around (hen hatched) but because tail feathers are coming in quite quickly, we may have another rooster. We JUST got out roosters down to one for my RIR flock and ONE for the English Buff Flock but now we may have to put this little guy into our empty tractor if he turns out to be a boy. I LOVE my roosters and I LOVE the sound of their crows but I definitely don't like having more than we need. LOL! NEVER heard of having a rooster yard and figured they'd all be constantly fighting so this was incredibly enlightening! (We also have two broody mamas right now...and it's cooler outside in eastern NC...WHENNNNN does broody season end?!?! Jeez! LOLOL!!)
I'd love to have a non feather footed banty rooster! Maybe someday.
I have been hatching out a lot of baby chicks and I have a lot of roosters to deal with and I never thought of putting them all in one area together without hens thanks for the idea 😊
Hi. Behavior problems in farm animals is how we interact with them and not learning why they are acting that way and ( thinking ) what is a rooster thinking as a rooster wanting to fight? It is to show he is the dominant male ...and in roosters this is also some times daily challenged by other roosters... I've found not to fight back ..but have a big fish net scoop them up and hold and restrain them from moving..so they are at your mercy...the point is you are showing dominance over them without challenging their fighting for dominance behavior and teaching them if they challenged you they will be restrained in time out and are at your mercy to decide if you want rooster stew....most I delt with will learn but their is always once in a while one like ( weirdo) the Sully rooster from California! That is just like a fluke of nature and behavior with that in mind and having unquie problems and situations like too many roosters...I really like your solution of having a Rooster flock ....there was a flock we had of too many batam roosters hatched out had about 23 they all hung out together and perched in a tree by the barn sort of like watch dogs of any danger at night...and had freedom of the yard with no problems..and our tick problems had become very little...
Thanks for sharing I'll keep that in mind as I hope to increase my flock and hatch some out I'm sure having more roosters than we need is a common issue !
Y'all have a wonderful day!
Hey if the roosters get knocked down to the bottom of the pecking order, would that make them less hostile after awhile? Eli is getting really good at catching the chickens.
I have a hen that pecks my legs sometimes however sadly the start of these week it got extremely beat up until the point where it was basically dying. I was at school and my dad found it laying there. A few hours later it got up but has brain damage or something because I sways when it walks and pecks in the wrong place when shown food, it’s constantly shaking and gets frighten when trying to touch it, it’s head is bloody.
Coq au vin is a great recipe for roosters.
This is really the only channel that I watch the sponsorships, because they're meaningful and all with your kids. I really enjoy these videos that you make and you put more than enough effort into it to make it quality.
Wow, thank you!
Holding them and forcing their head down does work.
After about 5 minutes of that and me telling him I'm the boss then I make him sit in my lap for another 10 minutes. When he is good and calm I let him get down on his own. From time to time I have to refresh his memory. His name is Mr. Darcey. Good Luck with your roosters. If they attack me 3 times strike 3 you are out. 🐓= 🍲
I have 6 roosters and none of them attack me. You gotta handle them a lot when they’re young and when they start to show any aggression chase them back until they stop. If they learn when they’re young that you’re the boss they will respect you. Maybe it helps my og rooster they all came from was a friendly guy…except towards the local cable dude.
