- Hi, I'm Meg! I'm trying my hand at DIY car mods today, and I'm going to attempt to upgrade my 2006 VW Jetta TDI (MK5) with some cheap eBay parts. I'm not entirely sure how these will work out, but I guarantee that I'll learn a thing or two along the way!

One of the reasons I love this channel is because nearly all the videos are at least an hr. I love long form content videos I hate that you tube pushes shorter videos on its creators please never change you are kicking ass.

Meg, you have the patients of a saint . Along with figuring out how to overcome this weeks obstacle, you've also learned the ebay lesson that after market car parts they sell very rarely fit as they should. When it comes to headliners I think the best solution is to remove and either replace all together or recover. I have faith in you and am certain you will conquer that one as well. I'm about to tackle the headliner in my son's '06 Jetta 2.5 as well, so I just saw your video on Saturday. I love how you put the "worker bee" and "mindfully figuring it out" music! Congrats on successfully figuring out so much so successfully. I love how you included everything that needed improvisation and showed what worked and what didn't. Guys often gloss over the figuring out process and just say something like, "It was a fiddly process." That doesn't show the crucial pieces where you run into a jam, step back, think about it, and try things till it works. I could be wrong, but the headliner may have stained because it needed a light mist of glue rather than enough to get the fabric wet. The spray cans are usually meant to be applied from further away in a light mist. When the time is right, you can replace the headliner. Last time I did one they were not too expensive.

Hehe, the "toony" Meg is back with another one.. 😁 It's realy some weird pleasure to watch you fiddle with unknown stuff... Da, tabs.. those are excelent to put things together, but when disassembling almost always some get broken.. I feed a slight resistance towards those... Anyway.. I've got a tip for plastics... Usually car plastics are thick enough to pin broken pieces together with a slightly different technique instead of glue.. It's better you melt across the crack into the plastic from the back side some paper staples "or heavier" , and smooth out the part with a soldering iron or heating a metal tool on a torch.. This applies to every plastic repair you make, just avoid mixing plastic types (for filler), as some are simply incompatible. Also, when you re-screw plastic parts together, if the srew is "wooden type" and screws into plastic, be sure to roll it slowly loosening untill you feel it jump into it's original thread path (also known as cross-threading phenomenon, by which on the third time the screw will hold nothing more adding many frustracijas), then tighten and it should follow the original path. Don't overtighten, especially applicable to parts you need to disassemble multiple times. Don't worry, you will always cross roads with unexpected turns and sub-projects while on projects path...

Those tabs are definitely finicky! I've heard about 'plastic welding' before but didn't think of it at the time! I should try that if(when) I encounter that situation again. I've got some fun things in store for the headliner in the near future too, it'll be nice to get that prettied up! Thanks for watching and for the tips!
I replaced the shift boot in my car recently. I looked online for replacements and wasn't really happy with the optioned. So I just disassembled mine and made a new one out of a pair of old dark denim jeans. Borrowed a sewing machine from a family member and figured out how that worked. My shift boot had a metal ring that clipped into the console. So I hot glued the fabric around it. All in all, I am very happy with the outcome.

The way i got teached with older cars, with the fabric glue was. Spray some in the cap get a paint brush not too soft and gently stroke it into the foam. Leave it 5 to 10 minutes depending on the ambiant temps. And may give you a much better result than saturating the fabric with glue. And will also prevent the glue from running anywhere you dont want it. Next to it the drying before you press the fabric on has the benefit that the chances of the glue being absorbed by the fabric is minimalized.
that would work, you could try gluing some light t-shirt fabric to skrap wood/foam so you know how little to use.

its so great to work on your own cars and its not super hard and it can be rewarding. yes, plastic does age and become brittle but that is a wood staple gun which is high velocity and the staples are way longer. the ones that would have been used were low velocity and they bend the staples as they go in like the normal office ones. given they were the same size you always have the option to manually push them through with pliers or similar, works great to go that way. anybody that works on their own 'any machinery' deserves props.
you also have to be aware of why type of plastic you're using so a good glue can be used. many cars use 'low energy' plastics which is a type that is very hard to glue to and requires primers and special glue. I found some 3m that worked really well on a project
I've never done a headliner so it was fun to see how that went
Thoroughly enjoy this channel - love the honestly of the channel - for example: changing oil and did not have an oil filter wrench, had to go buy one, you really have never done an oil change. It's the honest perspective from someone that has never done what they are doing and walking the viewer through the process. Keep up the great videos.

Use double sided tape for head liner.

You overloaded the spot on the headliner. You should pull it down to the end of the drooping and spay a mist on the cloth and then put a light coat on the foam let it set for a second or two depending on the temperature let it tack up and then stretch the fabric and pat it back in just make sure you get all the air pockets out as you are rubbing and stretching it back in to place.

The UV glue needs UV to set. It’s not a time thing like super glue, you have to hit it with UV light for it to cure. If you cover it with tape the light won’t cure it. 👍
I was about to say the same. That Uv glue is only good for external stuff like making fishing lures. If you’re trying to overlap a part to fix it, the UV light can’t penetrate into the joint far enough to cure it.

Really enjoying your videos! I love watching people learning how to work on things themselves…though I have caught myself talking to the screen a few times, like for the nuts stuck in the sockets saying to drop the socket on the ground to get them out, or thread them back on a bit and give it a whack.
I’ve used Bondic on several applications, and have found that it works better as a filler-adhesive, rather than an alternative to CA glues which work best for tight-fitting breaks and surfaces since Bondic needs the UV to penetrate it to properly cure. I get a solid cure with a bigger UV light than the one it comes with, and then leave the part in the sun *when possible* or under my big UV curing lamp overnight in the garage (I do a fair bit of body work & painting and some fillers and clears cure w/ UV).
The spray adhesive needs to be sprayed from a distance because the spray pattern will allow for good coverage and thinner application to not saturate the fabric/foam. It also needs to be sprayed on both sides for best adhesion, where you let it dry until tacky and then press them togther
Glad you're enjoying the videos! Yes, I think the spraying from a distance is vital for the success of the headliner application, and I have also read the same about spraying it to both sides, I'll definitely use these better techniques when I replace the headliner properly next time!

Tip on the knob; Scrub it with leather cleaner and a stiff bristle tooth brush. A lot of the time the wear you see in leather is actually your own skin and residue built up on the cow skin. If that doesn't work a Sharpie will. 😂

We had a similar issue with our headliner and we used sewing pins to pin the fabric back to the foam. It's just a temporary solution but it looks a lot nicer than a hanging headliner. With some creativity you can do a pretty pattern with the pins or even a picture or something. We did just a grid though. :D
I went through the pain of that shifter knob today too - getting that ring off and back on inside the boot isn't easy. Great job, looking at getting similar lights for the mirrors too as I fitted sequential tail lights - now I know how to go about installing them.
I recently bought an 2011 VW Golf TDi with 86k miles to use as a daily driver recently and past few weeks completely went to town on the interior. Ripped the seats out, replaced with black ones off a GT trim car with alcantara centres, wet vac'd the carpets and 'new' seats, steam cleaned every surface in the car, changed the speakers for a Focal kit, added a small amp behind the glovebox, RCD 360 radio w/carplay and new steering wheel and shifter boot.
They are fun cars to work on if trying at times (like any other) - although best of all, it doesn't smell of damp dog inside and nothing is sticky/slimy anymore. lol

They sell interior dye in a paint can. Match color and lightly spray. No more glue stain. When doing a headliner spray glue let become tacky then press together. Not trying to intranet know it all just a small amount advice. Awesome job and wonderful videos thank u for sharing with us

Well I like those mirror indicators so much I just ordered some for my car Meg! As for the spray glue, you just used way too much, I've done several with it and you just need a light spray on both surfaces, leave it to tack up and press together, job done.

The little preview made this look like it was much more of a disaster then it turned out to be...lol. Money well spent on the el' cheapo eBay parts, the shifter and sequential lights really turned out great!

Hi, the mirror protection is made of a plastic called ABS, a plastic that cannot be glued once broken, it is best to replace it

Another breath of fresh air, Meg! Shame about the head liner, but most people seem to have problems sticking an old one back, even new ones, too... p'raps see what the other options are? General advice seems to be lightly spray and allow to become tacky.

with glue you have to put it on lightly, and w8 till it dries for few minutes then press the fabric

You're better off pulling out the whole headliner and reupholstering it something else. I did an old Volvo Station wagon in plaid once and it came out legit!

Put another piece of plastic behind the break, spanning across it, then glue both pieces together.
I think you're ready for a project car. A car that you can fully enjoy. Your knowledge and skills are enough to tackle something like this. I think you can have a lot of fun with it. 💪
I would love to have a project car! Unfortunately we're not allowed to have project vehicles at the complex I'm in, but hopefully in the future I'll have the ability to do that!

Check that your sunroof drains are clear. You can use a speedometer cable or other long flexible cable. There's 1 on each corner of your sunroof. They have multiple failure points including the tube leaking wear it meets the sunroof. Removing the headliner is a good way to see if that's the case. I used silicone on my mk4 jetta.
Sunroof drains were plugged when I first bought the car (which caused that leak and stain) but I cleared those out right after I bought it and thankfully I haven't had any leaks since. Will hopefully be replacing the headliner properly in the near future!
@Meg.August I had to do that with my mk4 jetta. There's a modification to cut the rubber pinch part off the drain exit inside the door. The mk5s and later models have the exits under the cars. The headliner is a pain get removed. I think I had to remove the seats.

UV cured glue needs the UV light to cure it. You can put it outside in the sun if you little light isn't working.

The reason for the shifter not looking as nice as the factory unit is because you got a package 1 replica and you have a package 2. The package 1 came with what vw calls leatherette. If you were to remove the leather from your shifter you would find the same rubber shifter with the holes up top, as it's the same shifter just with a leather wrap.

There’s an Amazon headliner pin/button kit. Not the prettiest but if you strategically place them it’s not awful. I did it to mine in the bad spots.
I did look at that those button kits and thought about, but I wasn't too fond of the look, however it would take care of the issue in a pinch. I'm thinking of replacing my headliner properly now, by removing the entire headliner backing and getting new material! Hopefully a project for the near future 😊
The Loctite 406 superglue is a good choice for most plastic in my experience. It cures fast but also it gets really strong after 24 hours

A bend nose pliers will have helped you to push the sidelight connector better. But very good job, I foresee a full hedliner replacement in the future

The spray glue needs to dry before attaching the headliner. You need to remove the entire headliner, remove the fabric, scrape the old foam off the structure, THEN attach NEW headliner material using spray foam.
You're right! I was hoping that I could do a quick-and-easy budget repair, but now looking into doing it properly in the near future

youre toolbox looks a lot like mine ......i keep trtying to lay out the tools nicely in the drawers but slam the drawer once and its all messed up again
you can re-order those sidemirror covers but you be better off trying to get the same coloured one from a wreckingyard (theres a small plate on the car somewhere with the paintcode of the car) as the original replacements are usually unpainted , since you allready have a badly fitting replacement mirror in that side you might as well get a complete mirror replacement from the scrapyard or at least take the mirror part with you as well , whont cost a lot extra and a friendly smile from you will go a long way in improving their mood and lowering their price i suspect
you could wrap the covers in vinyl too that should hide most of the damage and keeps it together might even looks nice in carbon look
think usually you rip the mirror out first (sound dangerous but push the mirror in on one corner till the oposite end of the mirrors edge is sticking out grab that and carefully pull it off the round holder same way you would replace the mirror glass , be carefull with the mirror heater wiring )
i think you wouldve had a better chance stapling the shiftersock using a paperstapler and a little extra oompf , the plastic is pretty thin so slapping the stapler should burst the staples through it
as for gleuing , think contact adhesive would work little better for both jobs , though once you put the two pieces together its there to stay
the glue WHEN APLIED THINLY to both sides should not soak through the fabric the stuff in the can kindof sprays on like sillystring / spiderwebbing and is mostly dry by the time it touches the fabric once dry you can rubb off the overspray if you havent touched it while wet , probably shouldve taken those sidepieces of the headliner cover and mabe the doorrubber too to pull it off enough to get behind it with the spraycan as you can thighten and tuck the ends of the loose fabric behind it once everything is stuck on
you could fix the headliner with spraypaint or at least make it one colour again , might need to use a darker colour and scrape or sand away the drips ( maibe do a stripe along the side instead of painting the whole headliner) , could use regulair spraypaint on fabric , with plastic it usually peels off over time
theres a special plastic / vilnyl paint made by dupli colour thats not verry expensive , need to apply it thinly in multiple coats on the plastic parts so you still see the reief / crackeling thats in the factory plastic and it not apears blotchy th-cam.com/video/VuG3YzMy4jw/w-d-xo.html

One of the first mods everyone puts is running mirror lights (front bumper too if there is an option) and shift boot :D Dont tell anyone i ordered 5 speed for my 6 speed gear :D but who cares i put monster label on it :D Feels like noone will shift to 6th LUL :D
Aftermarket side marker lights/mirror lights and a new shift boot are honestly such great little facelifts for any vehicle!

Two out of three upgrades aren't bad i bet there are heaps of other resalotions for fixing the headliner and how much were your window tints I found some for seven dollars for six meters online

superglue does not stick to all plastic. especially car plastic which can withstand a number of chemicals such as oil and petrol
I have a 1985 Ford F-150 I know all to well what brittle aged plastic is like.

Hi Meg ,i also have a 2015 macbook pro that i use most days also a 2024 macbook air that doesn't leave the house ...watch your 2015 that the batteries dont start to expand as mine did with excess use ..fixed with a replacement pack ...anyway enjoying the videos.
