Thank you so much for this! I just got an OP-Z as my first real foray into electronic music production. It's a pretty intimidating device and the learning curve has been steep (especially since I don't have an apple device for the screen). Looking forward to watching the rest on patreon! I always feel like I’d enjoy the Teenage Engineering stuff...I think I feel overwhelmed by its capabilities. My basic ass brain 😥

Dude you'd be fine. They're about the only synths I can understand - they're weird and there''s a lot they can do but everything is so heavily designed around making sense within itself, it all just clicks.
start with a pocket operator, they're a lot of fun to play around with
Leaning this things workflow takes me back to when I was learning the functions of my mpc2000. One operation at a time until its familiar
As with any physical music tool, I always recommend reading the manual/overview of the features at the start, but then from there just dive in and mess around with it. There's a ton of depth in TE's stuff, and the way their products are designed makes them really fun to just play with so you can often mess around and come up with some cool stuff.

At first I was kinda sceptical about the lack of a screen but seeing how fast your pad reacts I see the benefit of screen size and portability. Have to give it to TE, smart move.

So glad you finally got into the op-z! Hoping you eventually go over using it with the op-1; with a USB adapter you can use the op-1’s keys and sequencers on the z.

Nice video man. I'm seriously considering buying it so I'll watch the others at that stage. Definitely agreed with you though, I'm also visual and I'll need to use the app. I mean the app is actually one of the main reasons I'm interested by this product. Very portable. Just that, a smartphone some headphones and you're read to do some music, sounds pretty cool to me!

Can someone tell me if low pass/high pass filters can be used per track or for each sound which is used in the given project?? In the manual, it's in Master section which leads me that it will be applied to all tracks. I want to know if i can mix my stuff in this machine. Thanks in advance!
Hey Jeremy, great tutorial, I always dismissed the OP-Z, but recently have become semi-interested. Would you still recommend getting one in May, 2021 - 2 years after you did this video. I am focusing less on eurorack and more into desktop boxes, sampling and FX, Ableton etc. Your thoughts.. appreciated, thanks!

Hey Great tutorial amateurs question. How do I get the patterns to play in sequence..?

I'm so glad you're doing this. My biggest question is, in Master, can you set a key/scale and will all the appropriate keys light up for that scale like they would in say, the Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol keyboards? And second to that, in Chords mode, can you set the types of chords you want and if you're set to a specific key or scale, will the chords play appropriately? Thanks in advance!
Honestly the master is a little weird to me still. I'm not sure.
@@RedMeansRecording From their site: "the master track allows you to transpose selected tracks and create harmonic chord progressions. the OP-Z automatically analyses the notes used in the bass, lead, arp and chord tracks to determine the key of the pattern. using the piano keys it is then possible to change key / mode. use the dials to control the master effects and filter.

So looks like it analyzes what key you're in and you can transpose after the fact? Seems kinda weird. If you ever get a chance to check that out in the future, I'd appreciate it.

Would you recommend this over the pocket operators?
I wish they would implement individual track control in the mixer, I usually use it without the screen and the groups aren't really enough and I end up having to go to the track and then adjusting the level on param4 page.

Got one but I think they should have added a little oled screen AND sampling capabllities. I don’t sell it because i hope future firmware will add sampling..... but maybe I’ll sell it for an op-1 or digitakt
track volume without the screen is the red knob on the yellow parameter page I think

I don't know, I feel like the op1 is simpler, and in its being simpler it seems it has more tools I can actually use and play with.. Dunno. Will watch the series cause I wanna clarify this doubt
So the OPZ seems like an OP1 but you provide the screen via phone or tablet. Is that correct or can the OP1 do more?
The opz is a sequencer and performing device. The op-1 is a recording device.
that green knob is not aligned like the other three and that slightly bothers me.

I'd be curious to know what you think of the instrument now that a few years have past, and how well your OP-Z has held up. (I've heard some troubling reports that the instrument doesn't hold up well to regular use over a couple years.)
i sold it due to technical issues.

It would be nice if someone could show how the synth engines sound, I don’t really know how the filter sounds or how does behave with pads, bass, etc. Everyone seems to be worried about the features and not the sound and how it compares to the op1

I want to love this, but I just... can't. I'm not an Apple person, and while people say you don't need a display... It looks genuinely more intuitive with a display, and there's no way I can justify such a huge purchase. great video though.
For real, for this price you might as well just get ableton, some softsynths, an audio interface, and a used synth. More possibilities like that anyways.
@@CockatooDude I already have all that and more. I love the idea of a portable workstation like the OP-1 for on the go ideas, but they're too wrapped up in 'design' over functionality >_
@@LavenderAudio Well, phone apps and small midi keyboards it is then. They take up about the same amount of space too.

I have been playing with synths and sequencers for quite awhile. I have a ton of pocket operators, and have quite a few korg machines and vocoder. I love the opz and been researching it and the OP1 for ages. I’m thinking I’m finally ready to buy one. Does anyone have advice which way to go? I feel like I’ve watched a million videos and still haven’t figured out what i should get
The op-1 is gonna do everything for you, but at a very steep price. It can essentially be used as a stand alone work station and it is also a bit easier to use. The op-z is more fit to go into a already existing setup and is perfect for sequencing drum beats and such. I have a op-1 and I absolutely love it but for the new price of 1399 I don’t think I would have even paid that for it. To be honest I would not sell it even for 1400 dollars though. I love it. My friend has a op-Z though so I have some experience with it.
@@christianeldringhoff4241 i think i found a used op1 for under a thousand from an old college friend so your comment has kinda put me over the line and think I’m going to go for the op1 because an all in one is something I’ve never had. Everything i have has been run through other stuff. Thanks for the feedback!

Someone has an ios Port of it that's unofficial but without a touchscreen it's kinda useless. Dunno if the air has a touch screen.

What are you trying to accomplish
Based on my research, usually novation circuit is recommended for a budget DAWless groovebox. This is the next highest, and then you have the deluge and op-1.
I got this and I'm having a blast. I'm glad there's more tutorials out there now. Jeremy is my synth hero
Yeah the circuit is great, but the op-1 is more fun.
@@RedMeansRecording I just want versatility really. I write electronic music, sort of chilled laid back stuff so the more versatile the better

It's an issue with Android's ability to offer latency free audio or something
I would never buy hardware that relies on an app this much.. I’ve been burned by apps not being supported anymore by Apple updates in the past.
Who say’s this will still work ok in 10 years time?
You don't have to use the app. RMR/Jeremy seems to prefer using it whereas Cuckoo barely uses it in his OP-Z vids that I've watched so far.
