      @@OllieLoops Great analysis first off. The feature I think is really cool is how the bass sets a key and then it builds chords based of that and you can transpose. So my question is in its current state, you can load your own sounds via USB? And then they're later adding the Sampling functionality... I'm right on the verge here since I want a really small machine to travel with thats battery powered but I obviously want to be able to use my own sounds in some capacity.

      @@willszabo8157 Hey Will, thanks for your comment. You can load your own samples via USB onto the OP-Z currently. So you don't have to stick with the stock samples. When they incorporate sampling into the unit, that will dramatically expand the potential of the unit. Hope that helps!

      The OP-Z for sure is not perfect and needs to be improved (as you pointed out so well) there are lots of pros and cons. I want to add some personal feelings on the OP-Z. I feel that the OP-Z is both a "musical instrument" as well as a "musical instrument" game, it's a device that allows me to just have fun, have fun in a very constructive and creative way. In my very subjective opinion, the OP-Z' is very reasonably priced.

    The recent giant price hike for the op1 makes me look at the opz again, I was initially disappointed with the beta models being shown that it had no screen and an APP that only works on IOS devices, here we are in the future with the same problem. Looking at small quirky company like modal, who manage to support all devices on their apps. Love the pocket operators but some days you have to wonder whats going on over at TE, They could outsource a company to port their app to android and have it sorted in a month. Wish they could have at least put a PO LCD screen in this.

    I'm considering to buy either a Digitakt or a op-z but I'll wait to see what happens with the z in the next couple of months. Also the missing mic sampling is the only thing that still keeps me from buying it. Good thing it will be implemented!
    Could it sample from line-in as well?

    • @OllieLoops
      @OllieLoops  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, thanks for your comment and support. Although TE mentioned sampling will be added to the OP-Z, it is still too early to know exactly what and when they will roll out. But it is excited nonetheless. There's a beta user who showed sampling over USB-C and this appears to be a line input and output for the device. Further, it appears sampling over the built in mic and mic input via TRRS connector will also be a possible. Lastly, TE mentioned a sampling module being released, so there is that to look forward to as well. Hope that helps. Let me know which device you end up going with.

      @@OllieLoops Thanks for the info! Let's hope if they make a module for sampling instead of a software update it won't be as expensive as the CV module (which I highly doubt though...).
      I will wait for about 2 more months and see what happens. Then I will have enough money to buy either the Digitakt or the Op-z.
      Right now, my decision goes back and forth between the two.
      Of course the biggest pro of the Op-z is its ultra portability (and it would be 100€ less than the Digitakt). The Digitakt however has some things that the Op-z hasn't right now like built in Sampling of course...

    I've had it for two months now, i really like it more than the Digitakt. The sequencer and the performance features are really good. You can use the Digitakt standalone, but it has no polyphony on the tracks, no synth engine, no song mode, no sample chopping and only two fx engines. It's a good brain in a studio as it has 8 dedicated midi tracks, but as a standalone unit, the OP-Z is more capable. Step components, parameters locks and ability to sequence fx, tape, master tracks is a lot of fun. I used the screen for an hour and then never used it again. Only to rearrange or add synths,fx, samples. My one and only problem with the op-z is that i can't edit notes on a track that's running for more than 16 steps. Only record live. I have to re-record when i mess up. But i guess i'm just used to move things around on my mpc live :)

      The OPZ has a pattern chain song mode which is better than nothing. But I would recommend listing your priorities and desired features in a device, then comparing what the devices offer. Can you elaborate on that? As far as I know, the duck punch-in effect only works on whatever track you currently have selected. If anything it's the opposite of a solo button, to my understanding, since it can only mute a single track at a time. I might not be understanding it correctly. Hopefully they'll add an actual solo function at some point in the future, it seems like it should be easy enough to do.

    • @OllieLoops
      @OllieLoops  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Tom, those are two separate questions that are not easy to answer in the comment section. However, I will try to help and offer my personal opinion. 1. Personally speaking, nothing is as powerful as your computer (and a good DAW). Even phone apps are very powerful. Buying a dedicated device will not replace all the features of a DAW. But standalone machines have their pros and place as well. They tend to be more tactile and approachable. They typically have a singular purpose making them somewhat straight forward but limited by hardware and software. But there are some very powerful standalone devices as well. And for some people, that is exactly what they need and want from a workflow and device. Since everyone is different, its hard to make general recommendations. My journey started on physical machines, and I have invested heavily into them over the years. But once I took the time to learn Ableton, I basically can't look back. I still mess with physical machines, but that's like a side hobby within a hobby. Let's face it, devices are more alluring than DAWs, so we think we need them. But sometimes a phone app gets you 90% of the way there. I recommend getting a standalone device if you want something fun, cool, and tactile. Sometimes a cool device can be enough to inspire us to make music. And really, that's all that matters. Whatever it takes to get you making music. 2. OP1 vs OPZ, I'm just going to make a video to better explain this. But in short, the devices are very different in how you sequence and arrange your songs on each one. OPZ is stronger on this front. When deciding between these two, it would be important to think about how you like to write and arrange your music. The OP1's tape player (song arrangement) can be limiting to some, but others love working within those constraints. I hope that helps!

      I like to thank you for this insight into these machines.i have a few more questions, where do you use your op 1 / op z , are the op 1 and op z just made to be portable, if they don’t why buy them . Statement time! I’m sorry I’m just really trying to find and research every feature of the op z and op 1 to make sure I spend my money well.

    • @tomwakeling9432
      @tomwakeling9432 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One more thing. If they created a module/op lab for the op z that you could load effects,synths,more sampling and samples etc ....
      Would you buy it
      Question time!?
      1.is this product unfair to customer who don’t have one
      2.do you think fitting 4 things such as a synth a drum kit another synth and a sample is possible on a tiny module like that
      Describing time
      It will fit like the other op lab but the wear the plugs go will be replaced with buttons to select the synth, drum kit or other things, for samples when you press the button the 1-10 keys will light up to the folders of samples you have 1 could vocal chops . Also I think you would load these synths and stuff up through Bluetooth
      Why would you need this
      It is like presets for live set so how ever you love your tracks to be you can make it that way
      But it was all just a dream

      @@tomwakeling9432 Hey Tom, So I'm a bit of different case scenario, since this channel is my new creative focus these days. I'm not making music as much because the videos take up most of my free time. So in short, I have all these machines for the channel. But, to be helpful, here's how I use them. My new favorite use for them is as sound modules. I use them for sound design and melodies for the videos. Check out the KO 1 year review, the Swiss Things videos, and the Hidden Copy and Paste Secrets. In each of these I've used the OP1 and OPZ to score the video, and do sound effects. I believe in using every tool at your disposal. And since I have all these, I use them because they are super convenient. I could use Ableton or Komplete to do sound design, and get better sounds, but I like the speed at which I can use these devices. It works well for my workflow. Secondarily, I do make the occasional song with them. But the bottom line is, I like each for one a different reason and I use them for use them for individual things. They can do a lot, and they have a ton of features. Thus, what use you get out of them depends of what your desired outcome is. Hope that helps.

      @@tomwakeling9432 Regarding the module, I don't see a lot of use in my workflow for the current OPLab Module. But theoretically, they could allow users to load their own "plugs" for synth engines and sample packs. I think they should open this up and there would be a powerful software solution without the need for a module. There could be a community market to share plugs and customize the device. But they're thinking a bit too much like Apple with all their overpriced accessories. I think TE could throw their users a bone and open up the OS on the OPZ for customization. My two cents.

    • @OllieLoops
      @OllieLoops  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment. This would be a good device to learn about synthesis. However, there are many other synths available for less than the cost of this device. Further, if what you seek is a synth, than perhaps a dedicated synth would be a better option. Arturia and Korg both have excellent options for less than an OPZ. But if you want to make songs and sequence stuff, sample, etc, then the OPZ might be a good option for you. I hope that helps.

I don’t travel as much anymore, and I don’t like using the device with out the iPhone. If you creating new beats you need that visual interface to help you build complex tracks. I would’ve loved a stand alone system that doesn’t need an iOS device to access all features. Gonna try to sale it and get a monologue Xd.

    really it's hard to learn anything by just watching a video, i obsessed over m PO-33 K.O. for weeks before it arrived in the mail and I didn't make much progress. The only way to get a full experience is to actually *feel* the thing in your hand. With that said though, it certainly did help when learning the PO-33 K.O.. After I received the PO-33 I learned its ins and outs probably within 3 days or so. Unfortunately, I'll never be able to afford this masterpiece :,((

      Hey Marcos, I agree that you need to have a device and use it for a while to fully understand it. That’s why I used the OP-Z for 4-5 months before I made a review video. Same goes for my review of the PO-33. Also, doesn’t stress not having a particular piece of gear. It will be around for the next 20 years and you will always be able to find one later. I wanted an OP-1 for several years before I was able to get one. So enjoy that PO-33 for now. Hope that helps.

      UnderBridge Rock the OP-1 is made like shit too. I bought a brand new one. After 3 days two of my keys stopped working. My F# and mic button both failed to register 99 times out of 100. I emailed TE so many times. I was ignored for over 3 months. Ended up selling the OP on eBay for more than I paid for it. The only thing made well from those guys are the pocket operators. Go figure.

    what are you talking about? the OP-1 is fragile, while the OP-Z is more durable..

    • @OllieLoops
      @OllieLoops  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your comment, Daniel. The OP-1 has a shell that is made of aluminum. It feels robust and substantial, and like it wont break should it took a fall. The OP-Z is made of plastic. It feels cheap by comparison. It could crack if dropped or compressed in a bag. It could warp if left in the sun. The prices of the two units reflect their build quality.

    • @polakuu
      @polakuu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@OllieLoops well, I wonder how many ppl had to order certain keys or even ship the whole OP-1 to TE.. while the OP-Z only has the problem with the knobs popping out, it's a minor problem which can be fixed with glue...
      who would leave a device in the sun until it melts? that makes no sense.
      if both devices would fall down, I bet the OP1 would take more damage because of how heavy it is and how many parts it contains.

    • @OllieLoops
      @OllieLoops  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      compared to the POs, I think the OPZ sounds way better. I think if you listen specifically to kick drum hits, especially when you dial in the drive and other parameters, it hits pretty hard. I also think the reverb and delay sound pretty decent too. But, its all subjective.

    • @OllieLoops
      @OllieLoops  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, I do think there are some stock plug sounds do sound 8-bit, yes. But overall , I think you can make the unit sound good by adjustment different parameters and effects.

      Ollie Loops i do have an op-1, which does sound great, actually, but i do not own an opz. Every review i see has these tiny clown sounds, which are cute for an album, actually... but they are so incredible recognizable, which is a major downer. Maybe, i just dont know what im talking about.

    • @OllieLoops
      @OllieLoops  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gotcha. Do you think the OP-1 sounds good? I think the OP-Z sounds as good as the OP-1. That should give you an idea what the DSP inside the OP-Z is comparable to. Regarding the stock sounds inside the OPZ, yeah, they can get annoying and repetitive. But I think most of the stock drum sounds are solid. Hopefully they release more plugs soon!

      @@Korr123 I'm a current digitakt as well as opz owner, As well as a room full of synth's but those are my sequencers. The thing is as far as samples the opz has drum samples.. so I'm assuming by 8-bit you mean the synth engines.. but that's kind of a trademark sound of TE and the same synth engine as the op-1. Yes it does sound 8-bit at times, but with the op-1 you can sample so that kind of makes up for it.. so to solve your problem, just load different samples on the opz, if you don't believe how good it can sound read about the converter as it's much better than the one on the op-1, or watch redmeansrecording video's, he really shows how good it can sound.. is really up to you, it can sound cheap and foolish or nothing short of incredible.. I will tell you it is not as transparent as my digitakt, but it swings like nothing else this side of old school mpc's and such.
