This is one of those super nostalgic games for me. It brings back a flood of memories playing it when I was 6 years old, sitting there with my Nintendo Power, admiring how big the levels were, and trying to find the next key needed to continue. I simply adore this game. I am really glad you covered it!
me too. I never owned it as a little kid, but one of my cousins that I didn't see often had it. whenever I got to see him, I looked forward to playing this game. It will always be one of the most special NES games to me. Though it is hard as fuck, lol. I remember being scared when my cousin (who was several years older) got to the nightmare king for me (I was like 5 years old).

One of my all time favorite NES games right here, sadly not many of my friends knew about it or had played it, but that just meant I could introduce them to it which was just as awesome.
And did you manage to introduce them into? Because sometimes it's the difficult part! I understand your comment... Sooo many games (or films, or books or comics) I have seen and loved and that no one else knows around me!
My friend and I played the crap out of this game. It was so much fun to find new animal transformations and getting to see all the unique levels. I remember the nightmare areas at the end (when you get the wand) being ridiculously difficult, and we got through them without using Game Genie. But this is a terrific game with terrific visuals, unique level design, and really fun gameplay. It's a shame more people don't appreciate it.
Another huge winner on the NES. I remember seeing the ad for this one in a comic book, and seeing it was by Capcom. It looked so amazing and I had to have it. Even at 9, I'd started to recognize that Capcom made winners. I already owned Mega Man 2 and 3, Ducktales, Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers, and Yo Noid! (okay, they all can't be perfect). This game blew me away. I was immediately addicted to all the power ups and the awesome level designs like the toy train and the upside down area. I regret that I never completed it without Game Genie. The nightmare stages at the end were just so difficult and a complete departure from the rest of the game. That flying sting ray boss always owned me and that awkward wand. Phenomenal, VERY underrated game, though. Nobody talks about it.
The nightmare stages make it a whole nother level of game for me. You finally get to use that stupid rod that's been on your back the whole game and it's a bit finicky but I love how it charges up after you swing it.
One of the best looking NES games, up there with Kirby
this game is way better than kirby because it actually gives you a good challenge. frustrating at times but i prefer that over a game being too easy.

Also, the second level of this game ratchets difficulty up into "rage quit" territory pretty early on. It seems like none of the stages (other than the last) are worse than it.
I've still never beaten the game. I always rage quit on the second part of the final world... BTW, you get a weapon to bash and blast things with in the last level.
I rented this game, got all the way to the final boss and couldn't beat it because I didn't know you could CHARGE the wand by holding the attack button. Throughout the game you've never used the wand in that way, and now, bam, new ability with NO information! DOH!! Still, awesome game!
One of the first nes games I played, or any home consoles ever really as my older cousin had it. I was too little to appreciate the mechanic or the theme so I didn't play it much, but it brings back memories.
I checked out the original comic strip of this and it is GORGEOUS. There's a hardcover of the whole run that got released a while back. Man, the art is soooo good.

enemies respond but it's not as hard ninja gaiden. And it's not like kirby because this game is much more of a puzzler. It's surprising to realize that. Snes drunk said in a different video not to judge a game by what it isn't and it's not a free form action game. The game probably doesn't give you enough lives but if you memorize ethe whole thing it's not that hard either. THere's usually not that many enemies and the respawning isn't as much of a problem because the enemies tend to be slow.
One of my favorite songs from the SNES days. I must of played that level hundreds of times. Mainly cause it was too hard for me and I was 6 years old playing this game.
Not on the SNES, this was for the original Nintendo.

Sorry to be "that guy" but it's "McCay" (there is no R). Winsor McCay drew Little Nemo in the early 1900s. He also was a pioneer of animation, hand-drawing every frame of his films. Definitely a guy worth learning about
It sure is a great game. There's variety as each level is different. My biggest gripe, though, is sequences. Level 5 is probably the most infamous for that. You have to possess every create in a specific order every single time. It's fine, I guess, if you do it for the first time but if you happen to die it gets annoying pretty quickly.
And by the way is the lizard blue in your game? I've always had a purple one 😁
This game was fun as hell back when it was released and I'd know because I conquered it!
I would play it again any day.

I always loved the soundtrack to this game, almost as much as the soundtrack for The Goonies II
The crazy part is this was one of the first video games I owned as a child and I absolutely loved it. It was a game that I had right next to super Mario 3 and Zelda 2
holy shit! i never even realized i had ever played this game until i saw the opening and saw the gameplay, and it all came rushing back to me, i loved this game when i was a kid. crazy.
still waiting for this game to come to the nes virtual console on the switch or at least i hope its one of those games they can re release and its not owned by some 3rd party or something that was unlicensed by nintendo as so many nes games were but i remember this game having commercials so i think its just nintendo not giving this game enough credit and not releasing it on the nes virtual console cause they think tennis was more popular then this game >.>

This game was so fantastic AND so hard. I did finally beat it back in the day but it’s so much fun.

Great video! This game is pretty good but like you said its just a little too linear
I don't think I understand that notion. Okay, this is no Legend of Zelda, but it's hardly a "linear" platformer. Outside of the toy train level, every stage is a fairly large area that you had to explore on your own to find all the keys. It's about as close to having "sandbox" worlds (like Mario 64) as you could get on the NES. I absolutely adore this game.

Actually, this was the video game tie-in for an American/Japanese co-produced animated film: "Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland", which itself was based off of Windsor McCay's classic comic strip that inspired a lot of early animated cartoons. The problem was, in spite of having a large amount of talent behind the production, it went through ten years of Production Hell and ended up flopping.
FYI, Netflix's recently-released "Slumberland" is also supposed to be based off of the comic strip...but at this point they changed so much it's impossible to relate the two. It's set in the modern day, Nemo is now a girl, and Flip went from being a green-faced, cigar-smoking guy in a tweed suit to a big goat man played by Jason Momoa (somehow...).
I've owned this game since 1991 and still haven't beat it.
This is in my top 10 NES games. If you look at it as more of a puzzle platformer (because you need to find the right animal for the section) rather than typical Super Mario Bros. 3 "power-up platformer" (where you don't NEED the specific power-ups, but they make the game easier and open up secrets), then it will really change your viewpoint. It's not SUPER challenging until you get to the Nightmare World (the Train level can suck, but it's more of a "fair Turbo Tunnel" than a brutal slog).
And I totally think this is a perfect puzzle platformer.
Underrated classic. This has always been one of my favorite games . Also some balls hard levels like the fucking train stage in toy land..its definitely played a role in my hair loss journey. AMMA-PAJAMA!
Hey, SNES Drunk. It surprises me you haven't yet reviewed Little Samson. Yeah, there's a ton of reviews out there already, but I find yours more objective. It could motivate a few people to discover it. I'm sure it fits in the "why the hype?" category.
I just realized that Super Mario Odyssey has the same gameplay mechanics in terms of possessing creatures. I remember how amazed I was when it was released, praised Nintendo for the innovation, not even realizing I played Little Nemo Dream master as a child 😄

I had the VHS of the anime growing up, and didn't know it was an NES game until I stumbled upon it at a Toys R' Us one day. I didn't even have a concept of "anime" at the time actually. I just thought it was an okay cartoon.
Im not a big fan of the key-hunting but overall its a great game. Tight control and really good music.
When it comes to the music, I'll always say this had the best final boss music in the NES library.

When I was a kid, I saved up, and had exactly enough money to get one game... I chose this game, and I was kinda of mad. I had heard a lot about it and how cutting edge it was supposed to be, but I was a kid so I was also stupid, and there was no internet. One reason the game didn't deliver is that as you mentioned, it wasn't violent enough to be remotely satisfying. You don't have an attack. All you can do is throw candy, and it doesn't do anything except get you your friendly animal pajamas. Those are heavily scripted, linear, etc, as you also mentioned, and well. In short, it sucks, has great music and graphics for the time, and also as mentioned it sucks. It's not a fun game, but more like a task list - a chore. At the time, I had spent all my money on this game, and so I did put time into it, played it, beat it, etc. Still, it's not worth it today, and it wasn't then. It's not a fun game. It's a chore. I wanted to say that again, in case anyone missed it. It's not a fun game. It's a task list. I played it for many hours, knowing I would not have enough money to get any other game for quite some time, as I'd just wasted it all on this turd. Back then if you bought a game and it sucked, you were just out of luck. This game gets me 'nostalgic angry', like Dinowars and Ice Climber.

when I was a kid, a friend of mine rented this game but he couldnt beat it, so he came to me for help. I beat it in one sitting. It was a good afternoon. Today I find the game little too hostile, but still recommend it.
I remember playing both this game and watching the anime movie back when they were new as a wee lad. Time well spent. :)
This game started as a cute kirby game and ended being a hellish ninja Gaiden that wants to wear you as a sock!

Had this game as a kid as I loved the movie but damn I could never get past world 2
I played this for the first time yesterday.
The first seven levels were great: yes, pretty hard, but after dying several times in each stage I could beat it eventually. The fact it has inifinite continues is a major strength, and each level took less than 5 minutes if you knew what you were doing.
Then, I reached level 8. Holy hell.
The level is split up into 5 stages, with 3 boss fights, and if you get a game over, you need to play the whole thing again.
THIS is where the game falls into "NES hard" territory. It was very good until then, but I had to use save states in level 8 between the different sections to beat the game.
I feel like my usage of states was in the spirit of the game up until that point, so it's all good as far as I'm concerned, but I'd never recommend this game to someone playing on real hardware.
Not one word about the epic soundtrack. Shameful.

I remember when this game came out and people were excited by it.
To look at a different kind of game that does this same concept there is A Wizards Lizard 2 soul thief on steam. ( Might be a great steam drunk episode )
