Now Kirby's Dreamland 3 I have to disagree. Because for one it was late in the life cycle and the last first party game they did. It flew under the radar, the game did what it set out to do, look like a coloring book. The graphics are better than you stated, they had to use a different technique to implement that water color look. A lot of people love this game. Tell the Japanese it's overrated 😂. We can agree to disagree I agree with most of your content. Not Kirby 3 though it just didn't click with you.

the hype for donkey kong country is well deserved. sure the other parts of the series where better in some regards but usualy when people praise donkey kong country the mean the whole trilogy on the snes anyway.
I personaly still like the original first part the most because its so iconic and has this nice basic story of the bad crocodile king stealing donkey kongs bananas and you go to the top of the mountain to defeat him on his pirate ship. its a perfect classic video game plot. the bosses especialy the first 3 are simple af but its all so well executed and not overdone... the controls, the music and the graphics still hold up today you can still play this and it still feels good even compared with modern jump&runs. f-zero and mario kart also still hold up. they still look good and they are still fun to play. top gear on the other hand just like road rash, pole position and other racing games in the same style where you dont actualy have a real racetrack but it feels like you are fixed on some kind of endless scroll or something.... sorry man thats just outdated trash. people maybe have nostalgic memories for it but racing games at the time needed the mode 7 rotational map to come alive. before that it really was the dark ages for racing games. it was useless, it played like ass and the games dont hold up today not even rad racer, super hang on or outrun. I would show them to a young kid to show them what old games were like but I wouldn't expect anybody to have fun with this stuff today.

Captain Astronaut I would say that FFV is not talked about or “underhyped,” due to the strange localization process with Final Fantasy games. There are still people who call Final Fantasy 6, #3 because that’s how it was released here. So V not being released in the US hurt it quite a bit I think.
It’s still one of the franchise I’ve never really played but really want to... just gotta make time.

I liked playing ffv. But repeated playthroughs and no completion with that game just left me feeling hollow about it. I certainly like the gameplay, and the characters of the game. I've just played it so much that it just disinterested me. I would still put V as a really great game. But i'll come around to it some other time

As many other ff games i totally loved V as well. The music kicked ass and the job system made grinding a lot less tedious. Another thing i liked was it was a difficult final fantasy. You couldn’t just breeze right through it without a little training. The story wasn’t great but who cares?

Here in Brazil, Top Gear is a total classic, the majority of the people considers Top Gear superior to Super Mario Kart and F-Zero, for example in a poll in a brazilian channel (Velberan) to the best racing game and Top Gear win both games in the list.
There is even a espiritual sucessor made by Brazilians with the same composer and even a remix of the theme of the game.

I had heard great things about it and my friend had the cartridge in their collection so I gave it a try. Its been a few years but I just couldn't get into it. I am sure things would have been different if I had played it as a kid, as I would squeeze any and all redeeming characteristics out of a game if I rented it or owned it when I was young and bored. But as an adult playing it for the first time I found it had a few cool features, but the gameplay itself wasn't something I could get into.

final fantasy 5 ancient cave hack is a must try. It makes the game infinitely better. Main prob with it is it takes too long to learn skills (dualcast for example 999 ap fughedaboutit), and some classes were useful, but to have a roguelike where you randomly get jobs that are much better than nothing (even blue mage and slow berserker are useful), it makes the game far more fun to play.

In my experience, the Famicom Phantasia is so unknown to the western world I was surprised to even see it mentioned here, especially as an overhyped one, since people rarely know what I talk about when I mention it to them. For me, it's one of the finest RPGs of its era with a better take on the technology-took-us-back-to-medieval-times-theme than both Secret of Mana an Chrono Trigger (even though these are damn fine games as well), and to how they managed to get such character development from just text and no voice acting as they did in Phantasia is just beyond me! For me, it's everything but overhyped :)

    • @GiordanDiodato
      @GiordanDiodato ปีที่แล้ว +1

people overhype it thanks to the "Arche fucks like a tiger" meme. Phantasia SNES is probably the worst version. Yes, worse than the GBA version.
tbh if you want an ARPG on the SNES, stick with Illusion of Gaia or Terranigma. they're far better. Hell even SO1 is better, though I recommend First Departure R for that.

@@GiordanDiodatoI'm actually quite liking Phantasia. Although the random encounter rate is indeed atrocious

Also, the boss fights are pretty challenging and the art is so cute! There’s a reason why it’s my favorite Kirby game and I was born in 2004 :3, I literally found this game on TH-cam on thanksgiving and it changed my life, and plus It inspired me to do research on video game graphics as well, if it wasn’t for this game, I don’t think I would be this video game crazy 💖💖💖

Disagree on Demon's Crest. You make it sound like a bad thing that there are secrets and passageways to discover with other gargoyles. If anything it gives the game replay value. And the levels are too short and straight forward to 'not know were the hell to go'. But then again, I played it longer than 15 mins. It is actually an underrated game. Like Actraiser. But the way you presented the issues of the game was really good! Many people just rant about popular games they don't like, but you presented your arguments in a well mannered and objective way through comparing the game with its sequels. This way you can defuse arguments early on and your actually won me over (to an extend) by pointing out the issues I realized since the first day I played it.

Jet Diamond V is my favorite FF, but I only like 1 through 6 at all -- the fancier the graphics, the worse the SquareSoft/Square/SquareEnix game has felt to me. 7 breaks the traditional damage system and 8 just bastardizes it -- and it's just downhill from there (to me). 5 took the brilliant concept of thr job system of 3 (real 3, not 6/"3 USA") and made it totally custom and ground-breaking. Were some elements of 5 a little corny? Sure, but so what? It was awesome!

Pretty sure it was just a hardware limitation. The sound cards back then were integrated right into the motherboard and for cost effectiveness (seriously I've got a magazine advertisement saved on my computer right now from the 80's/early90's advertising a 10mb hard drive for over three grand) relatively simple with few channels. The personal computer was still an enthusiast device back then, all hardware was pricey as a result.

Nintendo Power rated DKC as game of the year in 1994 over FF6, back when Nintendo Power was still a pretty big deal. I don't know if DKC is over-rated today, but the hype did get a little out of control when it first released since everyone thought rendered graphics were so amazing at the time. It's still a great game and even a classic but I can see where SNES drunk is coming from.

The Super Famicom version of Phantasia is flawed from inconvenient apporach to melee battles against aerial enemies to poorly planned learned magic order (Have fun going through Ymir's Forest/Treant's Forest with only 15 panacea bottles). FFV put attention to combat in a way many entries wouldn't dare to do today and... gave you options to play however you like, not even FFIII gave you such opportunity. FFV gets overlooked because people want to play a game for story and not to play the game itself, so naturally it doesn't get much attention.

I love FF5, but besides labeling the story as lighthearted, I would also call its structure fairly, well... stupid. There are some transitional moments in there that are incredibly hard to swallow, even with all of the suspension of disbelief in the world.
I will give you that it's a much more involved game than FF4 though, which although good has its reputation carried mostly through nostalgia. FF4 has its strength (good level design, some hard fights near the end, and forcing you to adapt your strategy a lot through constantly changing party members), but from a storytelling perspective it's a bit of a dusty relic.
And to be fair to F-Zero, it's pretty challenging in its own right. I sure as hell can't beat it, anyway.

FF IV is vastly superior to V. The only thing anyone ever talks about when referencing V is the job system. People have fetishized it into something it's not. Just because a game had a different gimmick, but literal garbage story, and literal garbage overall plot/game progression (how many times were you forced to warp back and forth between "realms" or "worlds" or whatever?) Its an insane way to drag out a needlessly long game. And on the topic of "but muh job system" for Christ's sake, III did this years before and yet most people act like II (which has its own problem for sure, but not like V, at least it has a compelling, if basic, story) and III don't exist! V is a mockery to me, of the entire series. It's not even witty enough to be a satire or self referential parody, because it doesn't commit to that. It literally half-asses everything compared to other games before it, with its one trick pony gimmick, that everyone likes to tip their fedora to, which in and of itself, while perhaps somewhat forward thinking in design, is not even that useful, as others have pointed out. There really isnt much incentive to swap around jobs or play in creative ways. Yeah, I guess you CAN make a party of 4 time mages, but would I ever want to? Not really. This game is traumatically bad compared to other Final Fantasy games, ESPECIALLY IV which actually has a beautiful story and themes for something told through chibi sprites. V falls between the asscrack of IV and VI, both games that have vastly much more to offer in terms of an experience, which is what RPG's and Final Fantasy in particular, are supposed to be about. Not grinding away hopping back and forth through the same worlds wasting your life away for a retarded nonsensical story about a guy named, "Butz". Its as if the programmers knew the whole game was like a stupid fucking fart joke in the midst of the actual intellectual conversation that are the Final Fantasy games.

Ghost7856 i should slap you silly. FFIV invented the idea of story telling through typed narrative.
Still probably the best story of the FF series.... also one of the best endgame sequences.
I can admit the gameplay is very linear. Although it is also the first final fantasy to have complete dungeons for optional summons.... slyph/bahamut.
Also two of the best FF characters come from IV... Cecil and kain.
IV & VI stand in a league of their own for SNES..... V belongs with mystic quest..... just straight inferior

Dude, the things you brought up about Demons Crest were total bs. It had multiple endings based on your choices in game, multiple different demon forms with different abilities, rpg elements, and great music, all things that were pretty novel at the time.. You complained that you have to play levels over again, but you neglected to mention that you do so with different forms and it unlocks new areas. Its painfully obvious that you just played the game a little bit, and then made it fit your narrative for the video. Try again.

"Its painfully obvious that you just played the game a little bit, and then made it fit your narrative for the video."
Oh please. Demon's Crest has its own video on this same channel.
"You complained that you have to play levels over again, but you neglected to mention that you do so with different forms and it unlocks new areas"
That's right it did, and the level design STILL was not a good enough match with all those cool abilities. That's my entire point, the level design did not hold up its end of the bargain. But, you're still under this weird impression that I'm calling it a bad game. Demon's Crest is not a bad game. The entire point of this channel is about managing expectations for the player. You recommend it, but I'd rather play something like Sparkster. There's nothing inherently wrong with that.

Im just saying I dont think its overhyped, its hyped for good reason. I mean how many games have you played like that of that era? It was original on many fronts. Also, I cant stand that Sparkster, when I first played it was on an emulator and I was like is this some fan-made knock off of Rocket knight Adventures (genesis)? I loved Rocket Knight Adventures though.

i cried when you put phantasia as overhyped. its an unknown rare gem that needs MORE popularity, not less. unmemorable plot? where do you get that? FF5 had less plot. And the plot ties in with symphonia. a strong disagreement here.

It's only overhyped because it never came out in the States. There's nothing special about it other than the graphics were pretty good when it INITIALLY came out IN JAPAN.

    After watching this list:
    1. I do agree with you on Demon's Crest, but for a different reason: you need to go out of your way to fully enjoy the experience, or you feel it wasn't worth it to play the game in the first place.
    2. I've never played Sparkster, but I will try to give it a shot in the future.
    3. I actually prefer Kirby's Dreamland 3 over Dreamland 1 and Superstar, though not over Superstar Ultra. I am one of the few people who more so enjoys slowly paced games over fast ones, but that's just me.
    4. I agree with you on Legend of the mystical ninja/Ganbare Goemon, but I still prefer the second game.
    5. I 100% disagree with you on Mega Man X3; if I'm being personally honest, I'd swap in X1 if this was my list.
    6. I've never played nor heard of King of Dragons
    7. I completely agree with you on DKC 1
    8. I've never played Top Gear
9/10. I'm not a big RPG fan, but I'll give FF V a try eventually.
