It was actually really smart of him to let Carl keep his wallet, helped build trust so he has enough time to escape. I think Carl may have actually been testing him one last time by reminding him about the wallet.
Leonardo DiCaprio is the only actor who can act like he's acting while still being natural at both acting and acting as if he's acting.

In the behind the scene, Leo said he really glad he got to spent time with the real Frank. He's really fascinated by the way Frank's encourage people to believe them in such a very natural way that a teenage boy could ever pull. He also said, he did Frank's character not-so-perfect because that's actually what makes Leo didn't overact or even made Frank so-professional at what he was doing.

Gives him his wallet, but changes the subject as he tries to open it. Talks to Murph about "LAPD" which would confuse him, so he instantly moves back inside to divert Hanratty's attention. Love it.
Best part is when he’s walking away from the window, you can see him thinking “please don’t say anything, please don’t say anything” after making the LAPD comment, because the guy could have yelled back “the hell are you talking about?” Frank knew he needed some luck.

@@Jake-qo3mp I was enough of a dork to see this in theaters at least 3 times when it came out - between that, and Hanratty's knock knock joke (and scenes like Frank pretending to be a substitute teacher), the audience got a lot of laughs every time, it was great haha

Cozy? IDK the right word.

I really did love how Carl was kind of his friend throughout the movie. When frank didn't get to see his father much and his mother never, Carl talked to him every christmas. Also how when he finally got arrested Carl said to frank that he would end up in the U.S governments hands. stating he shouldn't worry ect. And in the scene right before that they were right next to each other talking about Carl's daughter and trust.
Carl knew Frank was just a dumb (yet smart) kid.
My favourite detail is at 2:04 when DiCaprio's character says "yeah sure" in that tiresome tone, his gaze slowly falling as well before reassuring himself. That detail is showing his realisation that this detective is the real deal and his confidence can not be shaken by making him feel subordinated like everyone else prior to this point and to ease his skepticism, he gives him temporary assurance (the wallet) and distracts him momentarily in that state to elongate the sub-conscious validation process which during this interaction the detective considers pointless, since he has already been given the wallet.
I think that "waaait" at the end is great too, like he's pretty sure it's not the guy he's looking for but he knows he can't let him leave without verifying, that skepticism is what makes him good at his job, plus DiCaprio was beginning to rush himself as he saw his freedom getting closer. The detective (I can't remember anyone's name, I watched this movie a while ago) could just check the wallet that he has but it would make him appear injustifiably skeptical again, making him look worse, so rather than take that risk, he offers the wallet back, knowing that if it really is the guy he's looking for, then he won't be planning on coming back up (his hands already being full) and momentarily, being stopped right before the exit and implying he left the wallet by accident, the expected coverup would be to thank him but instead, the additional compliment "I trust you" because that's what he's trying to get from him.
And then of course the following subsequent premature celebration. That "hey" out the window gets me since he sounds so betrayed after he just said he trusts him and made him falsely on the other side as well.

It's consistent with his character , highlighting the character not being comfortable in the situation , making a simple error because the heat of the moment got to him.

Leo showed the best performance of his carreer in this movie! It‘s glorious to watch him acting with so much joy and naturalness. Combined with Hanks this couldn‘t go wrong. Phenomenal movie!

This is such an underrated movie. I didn't even know it existed until 2010. Since then it has become my all-time favorite movie in every way. Also has probably the best Score/Soundtrack I've ever heard as well.
You should read the book. The actual guy this is based on does even crazier stuff that they didn't include in the movie. Like breaking out of prison twice (just through manipulation) and robbing an airport (again just through manipulation).

Cause the con was working. It was all an act. Any slip on Frank's 'act' would of got him caught, he was right at the door. Best to just get away from carl and his gun ASAP
@Kirayama Kama Its a no brainier really. Underneath franks swagger he was scared shitless. Anyone would be. You could see it when he turns to drink the water (he was shaking but had to hide it). If you're a con man who has just managed to fool a real life FBI agent who can shoot you or throw you in jail for the next 30 years. Why risk getting caught when youre home free. I would of got out of there as well. So would anyone.

Even if the movie embellishes the facts of the original story a bit, it’s classic Spielberg entertainment and wholly engaging.
Fuckin hell that was smooth as fuck.
What's funny is this scene never happened. It's the culmination of two separate events. Frank did stay at a hotel like the one you see. It was there he started creating his Doctor persona. The second half didn't involve Carl personally and happened after Frank had already been busted. He managed to con his way out of prison, held himself up in a motel, was about to be arrested, and escaped acting as another member of the FBI. He asked the feds if Carl was at the motel and convinced the officers that he was working under him. Since Carl made it a point to personally arrest Frank, no one thought twice about the con until Carl showed up and Frank had already fled.
