      CRT were expensive and complicated to make compared to lcd. Except for 1 or 2 reasons, there is no benefit to crt over lcd. Size is the main reason. The biggest crt the was commercially produced was only 42 inches. Floppy disks are different since they still serve a need. Many systems still use them unlike crt. There are a couple companies that still make crt, but they are for military and airlines.

      The only thing that made crts affordable was economy of scale. When everyone was buying them, they could still turn a profit. With few people buying them, it's just not affordable. Crts are really expensive to make.

Been exploring retro games I was never been able to play when I was young, and replaying favorites. It's been a fun and inexpensive hobby (so far, anyway).

    spot on video. You can't appreciate the marvel of these things until you do see them. Back when I took them for granted during my Amiga days, I didn't tend to marvel them in the same way other being grateful to have one over my tv thanks to my mum. But then you try to play your older games library and it's quite the shock how terrible they look and feel. Even plasmas can't manage the perfectly smooth motion and it's impossible I find having to play using anything but a CRT these days for my collection. Crt's are a real treasure to me and so I make sure I've got plenty and I advise people check them out at least

    A reason to get a 1080ti or Titan for CRT monitors is that these are the last Nvidia cards that support *interlacing* .
    When you use interlacing on a CRT monitor, you can run higher refresh rates and resolutions. It actually gives a sharper image and corner focus than progressive when you interlace at these high refresh-rates/resolutions, but doesn't take more processing. Since the fields are alternating so fast, you don't even see the jitter that most people associate with 480i or 1080i.

      You also don't have to sacrifice your gpu either. You can just put a 1080ti in your PC right next to your 3090. Run your cart off of the 1080ti and then run your 3090

    • @Pasi123
      @Pasi123 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't know new cards don't support interlacing, the newest card I have is a GTX 1080 so I've never ran into that

    • @eleckson
      @eleckson ปีที่แล้ว

      @Pasi123 Yea it's why the GPU pass thru method exists. Using a newer card to render stuff and an older gpu to interlace. Even on a 1080ti it's tough because you can only interlace through the HDMI and you need a high bandwidth DAC. I'm running 2056x1536 interlaced @160hz and it's insane

  • @blunderingfool
    @blunderingfool ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey, these CRTs that "top out" at 1280x1024 should actually be run at 1280x960. The former is 5:4 whilst the physical resolution is 4:3. You might be able to squeak out 5 more hertz as compensation which is a bonus.
    Also by and large most people will want to use the Startech DP2VGAHD20 adapter, the 375mh pixel clock rate will handle most anything.

    "Find for a pretty good price."
    I constantly look on Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, eBay, Mercari... And CRT computer monitors go for ridiculous prices. Like $100+ with like $60 for shipping. I guess that's a reasonable price for a VGA monitor, considering they were still really expensive 20 years ago. I use a Sharp CRT that I have a SFF Dell Vostro hooked up to it with a RTX Quadro T400 for now, but the composite to HDMI converter doesn't give the best picture lol. Gets the job done though. Nice for playing MAME and some online matches on Fightcade. Anime looks amazing on CRT's btw! I found out Hulu, HBO Max, and TH-cam will fill the screen on 4:3 content if the resolution is set to a 4:3 resolution. Watching the "Joy of Painting" on TH-cam really makes low resolution Bob Ross paintings pop!

    I scored a LG F900P for 72USD (500Kr) here in Denmark. I was amazed by this find because CRT monitors are almost never showing up on the used market here in Denmark. It almost never happens anymore.
    It had been listed for a long time, being buried on page 71 between old 19" LCD monitors. I guess the name and model wasn't well known, so no one searched for it, and on the single picture taken, it kind of looked like yet another bad 4:3 LCD monitor.
    It can run 2048 x 1536, it has VGA AND BNC connections, and it was produced in 2005, meaning it's one of the latest models to ever be produced.

    i suggest using a motherboard with a vga out. thats what im using. 4790K inside there and a 1080TI... enough for retroarch and GOG Games. And All the Nightdive remakes. More than enough actually. In Windows 11 Settings in the Graphics area you can select which game uses which GPU... Works lilke a charm. No Adapters... Just right out of VGA to CRT. Works like a dream. Doom 3 here we go...
    to clearify... its hooked into the motherboard.... and usually uses the Intel HD Graphics from the CPU... but you can select the 1080 TI in the Graphic Settings in Windows. So i can use the 1080TI for Games.

      I still have a gtx 1070 but honestly the interlace option wasn't really worth it since the MHz on the HDMI to VGA was only 215. At that rating, the picture doesn't look too bright or clear at the peak of 1080p, 60fps (110fps interlaced). It's better to get a dpi to VGA (515Mhz) and get a mid to high tier CRT monitor that can run high fps on progressive scan.

      They still have shadow mask / aperture grill, which means they still have finite color resolution.

    Yeah OLED still needs improvements, but I still expect MicroLED to be a better modern successor in time. Still, I wonder when we would see a modern flat tech display with gridless dot made pixels akin to CRT monitor. Maybe in future laser based tech in monitors.

    I have a Sony CPD-G400 which is a nice little 19 inch monitor and a Sony CPD-G520. I haven't used either in a while but this is making me want to pull one out and play retro shooters on it! I haven't had a ton of time to play games in life recently and I don't really have desk space right now but I might have to have some fun with this one of these next weekends.

      I have a "retro" pc with Windows XP installed but it's pretty darn beefy for an XP machine. I've used it with the CPD-G400. Asus Z68 board, i5 2500k, 16GB of 2400 MHz RAM (which on 32 bit XP isn't even addressable beyond 3GB I think!), a GTX 980 with modified drivers for XP, and a Soundblaster audio card with EAX support. I do miss a lot of conveniences from Windows 7 and that's nostalgic itself at this point so I kind of want to upgrade. But I would be losing EAX audio support which is a bit of a bummer.

    I would use a CRT monitor, not just TV, with my game console to play modern games, unironically, I would just have an HDMI VGA adapter.

      Newer retro consoles like PS2 and Dreamcast look amazing on this... But with the older 240p consoles, I have to run CRT filters because it's just too sharp and high-res on this

    I love those Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 200 monitors, they are great multi use CRTs in that they have C-Sync, Sync-on-Green and the normal HV-Sync, so you can plug in any RGB/component source type you need inc scart with the right cable (such as the Pakapunch cables), perfect for PS2/GC/OGXB via progressive scan, I'd take one over the 2070SB even personally, then again I'd prefer to have both lol. I do have the LaCie Blue IV 22, which uses the 2070SB tube, but the LaCie has higher quality electronics as it's meant for the pro market.

    Currently playing shadow of Chernobyl on Alienware 25" 240hz because my 4890 in my retro xp died and don't have other overkill gpu to drive 1024x768 at 100hz for my Samsung 20'' crt. Need one of those adapters although I'd still prefer real old hardware,eax and all...I even have my original intellimouse,still the best

    If you like Morrowind, and you haven't already, i'd suggest the True Night & Darkness Mod for OpenMW. It's not even a mod, just settings to make it darker which is absolutely phenomenal in a Morrowind playthrough. Dark room required of course! Also if you ever get a chance to check out The Dark Mod. Playing this, again in a dark room on a Sony 420GS just has me in shock with how good it looks. Seeing is believing.
    I'm actually one of those guys who got a 980ti to see if there was any difference in the experience and to be honest, I can't see any. I don't feel too bad though because the 980ti is still an upgrade to the card I had, the 1050ti.

    haha I love you Logan, legendary ending of the video. I played for 33 years and reaching retirement of my gaming days cause of eye tracking tech and all that sizzle. But yes you right, I should consider replaying or playing missed games from the 90s and getting uplifted compare to modern games that are political and capitalistic in nature. I have a pg278qr by asus rog and I'm in love with it, the pixel density and tech is really advance. I play 3D stereo games so I'm gens away from vr or any tech with 3D vision by crappy nvidia that killed that legacy tech. I had a great time gaming this 33 years and learned so much from the stories, dialog choices and reflecting on my personality and heart in them. I wish that you will continue having fun making videos for us and I hope you will make good income from those that can support your endeavours while being inspired by your heart, mind and soul. Keep well Logan and safe.

    Thank you, Ward, I have two questions. First, do you have problems with your eyes? Because sometimes when you work with old technology it could be painful. And Second, question, do you have protection for a screen(Fellowes Privacy Screen Filter)? Or it's not necessary?

    I wish I had the room for a CRT, but I don't really have any space for a second desk etc. Still, I was born legally blind with 20/200 vision thanks to albinism, so a lot of the imperfections of playing older games on an LCD I don't think I really notice.

    Running a HP p1230 Diamontron. Got it for about 1500 PKR or like $8 at the time. I loved it so much that I sold one of my side 16:9 LCD monitors. Kinda lowkey regret that now but this monitor is so baller that I straight up used it as my daily driver for 6 months before coming to my senses.
    This bad boy goes up to 2048*1536i @ 85Hz for pretty games.
    1280*960i @ 161Hz for fps games, rhythm or other games that benefit from large fps.
    640*480p @ 161Hz for old PC and 6th and some 5th Gen console games.
    320*240p @ 161Hz for 5th gen and older console games.
    I love this monitor so much. 4:3 is awesome aspect ratio, really artsy and the image is razor sharp even at the native resolution from my LED 16:9 main monitor. At really low resolutions the scanlines are so crispy. The blur and contrast is unmatched. But get real for a second. This monitor in the video and the one I have are amazing for a lot of games old and new. But the newest games are made for LEDs and OLEDs. They are brighter and the darkest spots end up being pitch black on CRTs. That's good but a lot of times there is some visibility on newer monitors which lead to enemies or other pieces of information becoming invisible for CRT users. I've also noticed that older games look bad on modern displays because the games appear to be bright and lacking in contrast. The thing is, on a CRT, the games look perfect and the contrast is returned. CRTs are awesome and retro games are a MUST play on a CRT. Even upres your games or whatever but play them on CRTs. I have extracted so much fun from these dying monitors.
    Someday in like 20 years or something, the last CRT is going to be scrapped. I hope there is a CRT made even in the smallest amount by someone using trinatron tech that uses a HDMI input and converts it on board. But that will probably not happen. I implore that people should get as many CRTs as they possibly can have. They can go for really cheap and even free. One neat trick to get them for cheap is by going to ebay or whatever site you use, search for monitor or old monitor and then sort by lowest price. People who use CRT on their listings know at least something about the tech and market and try to get their money's worth. People who just list them as monitors want to rid of them. So help them get rid of them and start using this awesome tech before it dies.
